Crack growth behavior of aluminum alloy 7075-T6 was investigated under in-plane biaxial tension–tension fatigue with stress ratio of 0.5. Two biaxiality ratios, λ (=1 and 1.5) were used. Cruciform specimens with a center hole, having a notch at 45° to the specimen’s arms, were tested in a biaxial fatigue test machine. Crack initiated and propagated coplanar with the notch for λ = 1 in LT orientation, while it was non-coplanar for λ = 1.5 between LT and TL orientations. Uniaxial fatigue crack growth tests in LT and TL orientations were also conducted. Crack growth rate in region II was practically the same for biaxial fatigue with λ = 1 in LT orientation and for the uniaxial fatigue in LT or TL orientations, while it was faster for biaxial fatigue with λ = 1.5 at a given crack driving force. However, fatigue damage mechanisms were quite different in each case. In region I, crack driving force at a given crack growth rate was smallest for biaxial fatigue with λ = 1.5 and for uniaxial fatigue in TL orientation, followed by biaxial fatigue with λ = 1 and uniaxial fatigue in LT orientation in ascending order at a given crack growth rate.  相似文献

This paper studies a multiaxial fatigue crack mode and a fatigue life of Ti–6Al–4V. Load controlled fatigue tests at room temperature were carried out using a hollow cylinder specimen under multiaxial loading with principal stress ratio λ equal to 0, 0.4, 0.5 and 1.0 and loading ratio R kept constant and equal to 0. λ is defined as λ = σ2/σ1, where σ1 and σ2 are maximum and intermediate/minimum principal stresses, respectively. Here, the test at λ = 0 is a uniaxial loading test and that at λ = 1.0 an equi-biaxial loading test. A testing machine employed was a newly developed multiaxial fatigue testing machine which can apply push-pull and reversed torsion loading with inner pressure into the hollow cylinder specimen. Based on the obtained results in this study, multiaxial fatigue properties are examined, where the fatigue life evaluation and the crack mode are discussed. The fatigue life is reduced with an increase of λ, due to cyclic ratcheting and crack mode in multiaxial loading. The crack mode is also affected by the surface condition resulting from cut-machining.  相似文献

This paper is focused on the VHCF behavior of aeronautical titanium alloy under tensile and torsion fatigue loadings. Tensile tests were carried out with two different stress ratios: R = −1 and R = 0.1. Both surface and subsurface crack initiations were observed. In the case of subsurface crack initiation several fatigue life controlling mechanisms of crack initiation were found under fully-reversed loading conditions: initiation from (1) strong defects; (2) ‘macro-zone’ borders; (3) quasi-smooth facets and (4) smooth facets. Tests with stress ratio R = 0.1, have shown that initiation from the borders of ‘macro-zones’ becomes the dominant crack initiation mechanism in presence of positive mean stress. Like for the tensile results, surface and subsurface crack initiations were observed under ultrasonic torsion in spite of the maximum shear stress location on the specimen surface. But the real reason for the subsurface crack initiation under torsion was not found.  相似文献

In the present paper, the mechanism of shear crack growth under both pure torsion and mixed mode loadings, simulating rolling contact fatigue testing conditions, has been investigated for a bearing steel and the role of the superimposed compressive stress in subsurface RCF has been clarified both numerically and experimentally. In particular a previous data set of fatigue tests on micro-notched specimens subjected to torsion and out-of-phase loads with |σmin|/τmax  3.5 (LP1) has been complemented with the new tests onto micro-notched specimens loads with |σmin|/τmax  0.7 (LP2) and a test under pure compression. The same tests have been also simulated numerically with a non-linear FE analysis of crack advance. The numerical analyses have been conducted with the aim of demonstrating that the compressive stress fully suppresses the tendency to tensile mode growth as the crack extends.Eventually, the competition between tensile and shear mode growth during a fatigue cycle has been investigated theoretically in terms of local branch SIFs. In particular, the conditions for the branch crack growth have been examined on the basis of the effective SIFs: the crack tip shielding effects due to the crack surface interference (both the mode I contribution caused by the asperity mismatch and the shear attenuation produced by the frictional stresses) have been quantified by employing a model for crack sliding interaction under pure mode III and mixed mode I + III loadings.  相似文献

The ball eye (BE) is a key connecting component between the insulator and transmission tower, whose fatigue characteristics concern the safety of transmission lines. To understand the fatigue mechanism and characteristics of it, the fatigue test was conducted based on the following data: r = 0.25, S = 500 MPa,then plotting of SN and Δεaxis  N, to analyze the fatigue failure of the test specimen from the macro and micro point of views. The research results show that: the life of BE significantly reduces with the increase of the stress amplitude, but the relative reduction in life is not the same; softening and strain amplitude of the specimen change differently before and after the stress amplitude of 300 MPa; when S  300 MPa, the fracture is more smooth, the fatigue crack propagation is slow; when S > 300 MPa, the rate of fatigue crack growth is faster, and the fatigue crack growth zones are not obvious. The cracks are easily detectable appear at the joint of the BE and insulator cap, and the cracks along the fracture cross section are constantly expanding, showing multiple fatigue sources and fatigue steps. The number of fatigue steps increases as the magnitude of the tensile stress increases. When S = 500 MPa, the yield strength decreases during the lifetime, the decrease rate of the tensile strength and microstructure strength in each stage are different. Axial lengthening and section shrinkage ratio decrease with the development of fatigue, fatigue evolution process is accompanied by phenomenon of crystalline slip, deformation, dislocation, at the same time, dissipation and decomposition of pearlite occur, and carbide precipitates from the matrix, growing and moving to the grain boundaries, the specific phenomenon of grain growth appears.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth behaviour of short corner cracks in the Aluminium alloy Al 6013-T6 was investigated. The aim was to determine the crack growth rates of small corner cracks at a stress ratio of R = 0.1, R = 0.7 and R = 0.8 and to find a possible way to predict these crack growth rates from fatigue crack growth curves determined for long cracks. Corner cracks were introduced into short crack specimens, similar to M(T) – specimens, at one side of a hole (Ø = 4.8 mm) by cyclic compression (R = 20). The precracks were smaller than 100 μm (notch + precrack). A completely new method was used to cut very small notches (10–50 μm) into the specimens with a focussed ion beam. The results of the fatigue crack growth tests with short corner cracks were compared with the long fatigue crack growth test data. The short cracks grew at ΔK-values below the threshold for long cracks at the same stress ratio. They also grew faster than long cracks at the same ΔK-values and the same stress ratios. A model was created on the basis of constant Kmax-tests with long cracks that gives a good and conservative estimation of the short crack growth rates.  相似文献

Investigations are presented in this paper on quenched and tempered steel 42CrMoS4 from two batches, with two different tensile strengths (Rm = 1100 MPa, 1350 MPa) but with similar microstructure, and a nodular cast iron EN-GJS-900-2 (Rm = 930 MPa). Fatigue tests with smooth (Kt = 1) and notched (Kt = 1.75) specimens were performed at R = −1 and R = 0 up to the number of cycles N = 2·109 in order to determine the fatigue strength behaviour and failure mechanisms, especially in the VHCF-region. Failure in smooth specimens often initiated at material defects such as oxides in the quenched and tempered steel and shrinkage holes in the nodular cast iron. Firstly, a fatigue strength analysis was performed that did not consider these defects. A possibility of analysis of experimental data including VHCF-results has been discussed. Next, a linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis was performed in order to describe the defect behaviour, assuming that the defects act like cracks. The results showed that there are lower limit or threshold values of the stress intensity factor range ΔK for crack propagation in both materials. Analysis of defects and defect distribution in run-out specimens confirmed this conclusion. From the comparison of the results with an SN curve from the design code FKM-Guideline Analytical strength assessment of components, recommendations for design and assessment of components have been derived.  相似文献

In the paper, the results of crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and crack opening displacement (COD) in place of crack initiation as well as the fatigue crack growth rate in higher strength steel are presented. The investigation were carried out on flat specimens with central notch under constant amplitude tensile fatigue loading at stress ratio R = 0.2 and different value of the stress σmax. The test results showed that with growth of crack length l grew values of the CTOD and COD. In the work, it was proposed calculation of the CTOD value on basis various dependence of plastic zone radius on crack tip.  相似文献

The HASTELLOY® C-22HSTM alloy is a face-centered cubic (fcc), nickel-based, corrosion-resistant superalloy. In the present study, the low-cycle-fatigue behaviors of the alloy were examined by in situ neutron diffraction at room temperature. The fatigue parameters included a total strain range of Δε = 2% and a strain ratio of R = −1 (R = εmin/εmax, where εmin and εmax are the applied minimum and maximum strains, respectively). The effect of cyclic deformation on the lattice strains was studied as a function of cyclic straining. The cyclic hardening and softening behaviors during fatigue is discussed in light of the relationship between the peak widths and lattice strains.  相似文献

Confined crack tip plasticity model is employed to predict time independent fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) behavior of HAYNES® 282® alloy at temperatures 1200F and 1400F. Crack growth tests were done in lab air, vacuum and steam environments at load ratios R = Kmin/Kmax ranging from 0.05 to 0.5. Calibrated model predicts average cyclic crack growth rate behavior of the material reasonably well. Predictions do not capture the accelerated fatigue crack growth rates observed in the data at low load levels. Such effects are believed to be caused by environmentally driven factors, which are not expected to be predicted by plasticity based models.  相似文献

Thin sheets of nitrided 18Ni maraging steel are tested under cyclic tension (load ratio R = 0.1) in the very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. The ultrasonic fatigue testing method with a cycling frequency of about 20 kHz has been further developed for these experiments. Sheet specimens with 0.35 mm thickness are mounted on a carrier specimen, they are pre-stressed and are forced to vibrate jointly. Between 107 and 109 cycles, fatigue cracks are initiated exclusively at internal TiN inclusions. The areas of the crack initiating inclusions projected perpendicular to the applied tensile stress are evaluated. The square root of inclusion areas, (areaINC)1/2 lies between 2.5 μm and 5.3 μm. Considering inclusions as cracks, their stress intensity range is between ΔKINC = 1.3 MPa m1/2 and 2.4 MPa m1/2. The sizes of crack initiating inclusions influence fatigue lifetimes. This is considered in a crack propagation model and by presenting lifetimes versus the stress amplitudes multiplied by (areaINC)1/12. A mean lifetime of 109 cycles is found at a stress amplitude of 22% of the tensile strength, which is comparable to other high strength steels tested under cyclic tension.  相似文献

A series of fatigue experiments was performed in order to investigate the effect of the R-ratio on the fatigue/fracture behavior of adhesively-bonded pultruded GFRP double cantilever beam joints. Constant amplitude fatigue experiments were carried out under displacement control with a frequency of 5 Hz in ambient laboratory conditions. Three different R-ratios were applied: R = 0.1, R = 0.5 and R = 0.8. The crack length was determined by means of crack gages and a dynamic compliance method. The dominant failure mode was a fiber-tear failure that occurred in the mat layers of the pultruded laminates. The depth of the crack location significantly affected the energy dissipated for the fracture under cyclic loading. Short-fiber and roving bridging increased the fracture resistance during crack propagation. Fatigue crack growth curves were derived for each R-ratio and each observed crack path location. The fatigue threshold and slope of the fatigue crack growth curve significantly increased with increased R-ratio.  相似文献

Duplex stainless steels (DSS) fatigue crack propagation resistance is strongly affected by both microstructure and environment. In this work, environment influence on the fatigue crack propagation in a 22 Cr 5 Ni duplex and in a 25 Cr 7 Ni superduplex stainless steels is investigated considering three different stress ratios (R = Kmin/Kmax = 0.1, 0.5, 0.75). Tests are performed according to ASTM E 647 standard, both in air and under hydrogen charging conditions (0.1 M H2SO4 + 0.01 M KSCN aqueous solution, ?0.9 V/SCE). Crack fracture surfaces are extensively analysed by means of a scanning electron microscope. Furthermore, crack paths are investigated by means of a crack profile analysis performed through a light optical microscope. Nickel coated fracture surface sections obtained for constant ΔK values are considered in order to analyse the loading (R values) and environment influence on fatigue crack paths.  相似文献

The influence of hot corrosion on low cycle fatigue behavior is studied by conducting fatigue tests at 800 °C in air on bare and salt-coated (90%Na2SO4 + 10%NaCl) specimens. This was followed by extensive scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examinations. Significant reduction in fatigue life is observed across all values of Δεt/2 for the salt-coated specimens in comparison with bare specimens. SEM examination reveals that the fused salt mixture sporadically removes the protective chromium oxide layer and exposes the substrate. Subsequent SEM analysis reveals that severe grain boundary oxidation leads to grain boundary cracking and provides numerous sites for fatigue crack nucleation and growth.  相似文献

Fatigue properties of 2024-T351 aluminium alloy are investigated in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) and very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. Endurance tests are performed with ultrasonic equipment at 20 kHz cycling frequency at load ratios of R = −1, R = 0.1 and R = 0.5 up to 1010 cycles. Additional servo-hydraulic tests between 8 and 10 Hz at R = 0.1 show no frequency influence on fatigue lifetimes. Linear lines in double logarithmic SN plots are used to approximate data. Slope exponents of approximation lines increase with increasing numbers of cycles for all load ratios. Failures above 5 × 109 cycles (R = −1 and R = 0.1) or 1010 cycles (R = 0.5) occur, and no fatigue limit is found. Fatigue cracks leading to failures above 109 cycles are initiated at the surface or slightly below at broken constituent particles or at agglomerations of fractured particles, which are probably Al7Cu2(Fe, Mn). Specimens stressed with more than 1010 cycles at R = −1 without failure show several cracks starting at constituent particles. Maximum crack lengths are 30 μm, which is considerably below grain size.  相似文献

The low-cycle fatigue (LCF) properties and post-fatigue microstructure of a Fe–15Mn–10Cr–8Ni–4Si austenitic alloy were investigated under an axial strain control mode with total strain amplitudes, Δεt/2, ranging from 2.5 × 10−3 to 2 × 10−2. The fatigue resistance of the alloy was described by Coffin–Manson’s and Basquin’s relationships, and the corresponding fatigue parameters were evaluated. In addition, the Masing behavior, which is associated with a constant deformation mode during fatigue, was revealed at the examined strain amplitudes. Microstructural observations of the fatigue fractured samples showed that the strain induced ε-martensitic transformation accompanied by a planar slip of the Shockley partial dislocations in the austenite is the main deformation mode controlling the fatigue behavior of the studied alloy at Δεt/2 < 2 × 10−2. However, at Δεt/2 = 2 × 10−2, the formation of a cell structure was found in the austenite in addition to ε-martensitic transformation. The LCF resistance of the alloy was compared with conventional Cr–Ni austenitic stainless steels, ferrous base TRIP and TWIP steels and low yield point damping steels. It was found that at the studied strain amplitudes the alloy possessed a higher LCF resistance compared to conventional Fe-base alloys and steels. Remarkably, the fatigue ductility coefficient, εf′, of the studied alloy is 1.3–6 times higher than that of the stainless steels because of a cyclic deformation-induced ε-martensitic transformation. The results showed that the ε-martensitic transformation that occurred in the studied alloy during LCF is the main reason for the improved LCF resistance.  相似文献

Stress–strain characteristics of the binary Sn–3.3 wt.% Ag and the tertiary Sn–3.3 wt.% Ag–1 wt.% Zn solder alloys were investigated at various strain rates (SR, ε·) from 2.6 × 10 4 to 1.0 × 10 2 s 1 and deformation temperatures from 300 to 373 K. Addition of 1 wt.% Zn to the binary alloy increased the yield stress σy and the ultimate tensile stress σUTS while a decrease of ductility (total elongation εT) was observed. Increasing the strain rate (ε·) increased both σy and σUTS according to the power law σ = C ε·m. A normal decrease of εT with strain rate was observed according to an empirical equation of the form εT = A exp (− λε·); A and λ are constants. Increasing the deformation temperature decreased both σy and σUTS in both alloys, and decreased the total elongation εT in the Zn-free binary alloy, whereas εT was increased in the Zn-containing alloy. The activation energy was determined as 41 and 20 kJ mol 1 for these alloys, respectively. The results obtained were interpreted in terms of the variation of the internal microstructure in both alloys. The internal microstructural variations in the present study were evaluated by optical microscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show the importance of Zn addition in enhancing the mechanical strength of the Sn–3.3 wt.% Ag base alloy.  相似文献

Fatigue life prediction for a dumbbell cylindrical natural rubber component under uniaxial tensile loading conditions was performed based on the Thomas fatigue crack growth model for relaxing (R = 0) load cycles and the MarsFatemi model for non-relaxing (R > 0) load cycles. By using a self-written program, we proposed a new approach to establish the relation between the power law exponent F and the R ratio in the MarsFatemi model. The approach is based on rubber fatigue life (SN) data rather than crack growth rate and tearing energy (da/dNT) data, avoiding certain difficulties often encountered using the crack growth method. The results indicate that the relation between F and R is a quadratic or cubic function over the range 0 < R < 0.3. Finally, the quantitative effect of initial crack size on fatigue life was studied. We found that the inferred mean size of crack precursors in the rubber component is around 30–40 μm under both relaxing and non-relaxing loading conditions, and the fluctuation of fatigue life is due to the inhomogeneity of crack precursor size except the factors such as unavoidable variations in testing conditions and specimen variations. The good agreement of inferred crack precursor sizes from different R ratio loading conditions is a strong indication that the Mars–Fatemi model provides a proper accounting for the effects of strain crystallization, and it confirms yet again the understanding that nucleated cracks originate from similarly sized precursors in both relaxing and non-relaxing fatigue experiments.  相似文献

Intermetallics Ti–49Al (at.%) alloy was directionally solidified with different growth rates (V = 5 μm/s–30 μm/s) at a constant temperature gradient (G = 12.1 K/mm) by using a Bridgman type directional solidification furnace. The primary dendritic spacing (λ), interlamellar spacing (λL), and microhardness (HV) were measured. Effect of V on HV, λ and λL was experimental investigated. The dependencies of λ, λL and HV on the growth rate were determined by using linear regressing analysis. According to the result, the values of λ and λL decrease with the increasing of V, and the values of HV increase with the increasing of V and with the decreasing of λ and λL. The results were compared with previous similar experimental results for TiAl-based alloys.  相似文献
