A model of the relationship between work and family that incorporates variables from both the work-family conflict and social support literatures was developed and empirically tested. This model related bidirectional work-family conflict, family instrumental and emotional social support, and job and family involvement to job and life satisfaction. Data came from 163 workers who were living with at least 1 family member. Results suggested that relationships between work and family can have an important effect on job and life satisfaction and that the level of involvement the worker assigns to work and family roles is associated with this relationship. The results also suggested that the relationship between work and family can be simultaneously characterized by conflict and support. Higher levels of work interfering with family predicted lower levels of family emotional and instrumental support. In a sample of 72 mothers with and without a history of depression and their adolescent children, maternal depression history, current maternal depressive symptoms, intrusive and withdrawn parental behavior, and adolescent caretaking behaviors were examined as predictors of adjustment in these youth. Two types of caretaking behaviors were examined: emotional (e.g., caring for a parent's emotional distress) and instrumental (e.g., looking after younger siblings). Although adolescents of mothers with and without a history of depression were comparable on levels of both types of caretaking, caretaking was associated with adolescents' reports of anxiety–depression and mothers' reports of social competence only for adolescents of mothers with a history of depression. Moreover, regression models showed that among children of mothers with a history of depression, emotional, but not instrumental, caretaking was related to adolescents' anxiety–depression symptoms and social competence after controlling for current parental depressive symptoms and stressful parenting behaviors. Examined the relationship of instrumental and affectional behavioral events to short- and long-term marital satisfaction. 11 distressed and 11 nondistressed couples made daily observations of their spouses' pleasurable and displeasurable behavior over a 14-day period. These behavioral ratings (on measures such as the Spouse Observation Checklist and the Enjoyment of Outside Experiences rating scale) were also related to several personality variables pertaining to sex role orientation and to reported activity during the 4 wks prior to the study. Results show a significant negative relationship between the frequency of displeasurable instrumental events and both overall and daily ratings of marital satisfaction. Affectional events were not significantly related to long-term satisfaction, contrary to expectation. Rates of displeasurable affectional events correlated negatively with daily ratings of satisfaction at a significant level. The most important finding was the degree to which wives' self-esteem correlated with couple-rated marital satisfaction. The need for further research that examines marriage as a source of mutual support and benefit for both partners is discussed. Measures of family stability, sociocultural background, and emotional ties to parents in medical students (N = 589, mean age = 22 years) predicted their social support measures, assessed 23 to 39 years later (mean age = 56 years). Father's education and family's involvement in church were positively associated with group participation (number of group memberships), whereas parental loss between the ages of 11 and 20 was negatively associated with group participation; perceived emotional closeness to parents was positively associated with social closeness (number of close contacts providing emotional and instrumental support). Thus, group participation and social closeness were influenced by distinctly different childhood factors.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Studies of hypertension, diabetes, and diet have indicated a relationship between social support and adherence to treatment regimens. Estimates of nonadherence following abnormal Pap test results range as high as 40%. In this study, the relationship between social support and adherence behavior was examined in a population of low-income, public-health-department patients with abnormal Pap smears. METHODS: Medical record reviews ascertained adherence behavior and interviews determined receipt of social support for 498 women. RESULTS: Related to adherence were: receipt of any social support; receipt of each of three types of support (informational, emotional, and tangible support); amount of support received; satisfaction with support; and source of support. Reported need for support was not related to adherence behavior. Receipt of social support was more strongly related to adherence when the woman's emotional response to the notification of the abnormal Pap smear was greater, and when acculturation was higher (among Latinas). Knowledge of the results of the Pap test was found to be an intervening variable between receipt of informational support and adherence. Knowledge of the purpose of the Pap smear was found to be independently related to adherence. Among black women, emotional support was most strongly related to adherence, while among Latinas, tangible support was most strongly related to adherence. In a multivariate model, Pap-test knowledge and the interaction between emotional response and receipt of any social support were significantly related to adherence. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that supportive interventions, including provision of medical information, emotional support, child care, and transportation, could help to reduce nonadherence.  相似文献

Obtained measures of role conflict, role ambiguity, and various job involvement variables for 61 high-level managers. Role conflict was negatively related to the amount of reported influence and positively related to the amount of perceived threat and anxiety. Role ambiguity was negatively correlated with job satisfaction and influence, and positively related to job threat and anxiety. It is suggested that organizational level be taken into account when studying the relationship of role stress factors with job involvement measures. Objective: This study examined whether the relationship between daily spousal support and daily psychological and physical outcomes varied as a function of level of breast cancer related concern (stress buffering model). Design: Ninety-five women with early stage breast cancer completed daily reports of emotional and physical experiences and satisfaction with spousal support for 30 days. Women also rated problems dealing with three types of cancer specific concerns: emotional, physical, and social. Main outcome measures: Women's positive and negative affect and cancer related pain and fatigue. Results: Multilevel analyses supported a stress buffering effect for social concerns and a reverse stress buffering effect for emotional and physical concerns. Conclusion: Daily spousal support appears to be an important contributor to the daily emotional and physical wellbeing of women with breast cancer. Contrary to the tenets of the stress buffering model, these data suggest that the buffering effect of spousal support is attenuated when breast cancer related emotional and physical concerns reach high levels. The link between emotional conflict and the perceived availability and use of social support was examined. One hundred and five undergraduate students completed measures of ambivalence over expressing emotion, repressive defensiveness, fear of intimacy, social support, and well-being. Self-reports, observer reports, and daily reports of social support during the previous month were collected. Both ambivalence and fear of intimacy were negatively related to self-report and daily measures of social support and to well-being. Repressive defensiveness was unrelated to the social support measures. Perceived social support mediated the relation between emotional conflict and well-being. The relationship of cognitive (worry) and emotional (emotionality) components of test anxiety to pulse rate, performance expectancy, and actual examination grades was determined for samples of both high school (N = 91) and college (N = 95) students. For both samples, 2 of the 3 major predictions received support: (a) worry was found to be more highly negatively related to examination grades than was emotionality or pulse rate, and (b) worry was more highly negatively related to expectancy than was emotionality. However, pulse rate was no more highly related to emotionality than to worry, suggesting that questionnaire and direct measures of autonomic arousal are less closely related than has been generally assumed. Investigated the association between reciprocity and older women's satisfaction with their social relationships. The sample consisted of 120 elderly widowed women. Analyses indicated that social exchange patterns that either overbenefited or underbenefited respondents were associated with greater loneliness. Reciprocity was greater in interactions with friends than with adult children and was more strongly related to satisfaction with friends than with children. Reciprocity was also found to vary as a function of the type of social exchange involved (companionship, instrumental support, or emotional support). The results suggest that the meaning of reciprocity is contingent on the actors' role relations and the content of their exchanges. The implications of studying reciprocity within a network perspective versus a dyadic-relationship perspective are also considered. In three studies we investigated the utility of distinguishing among different domains of interpersonal competence in college students' peer relationships. In Study 1 we developed a questionnaire to assess five dimensions of competence: initiating relationships, self-disclosure, asserting displeasure with others' actions, providing emotional support, and managing interpersonal conflicts. Initial validation evidence was gathered. We found that self-perceptions of competence varied as a function of sex of subject, sex of interaction partner, and competence domain. In Study 2 we found moderate levels of agreement between ratings of competence by subjects and their roommates. Interpersonal competence scores were also related in predictable ways to subject and roommate reports of masculinity and femininity, social self-esteem, loneliness, and social desirability. In Study 3 we obtained ratings of subjects' competence from their close friends and new acquaintances. Relationship satisfaction among new acquaintances was predicted best by initiation competence, whereas satisfaction in friendships was most strongly related to emotional support competence. Insights from appraisal theories of emotion are used to integrate elements of theories on collective action. Three experiments with disadvantaged groups systematically manipulated procedural fairness (Study 1), emotional social support (Study 2), and instrumental social support (Study 3) to examine their effects on collective action tendencies through group-based anger and group efficacy. Results of structural equation modeling showed that procedural fairness and emotional social support affected the group-based anger pathway (reflecting emotion-focused coping), whereas instrumental social support affected the group efficacy pathway (reflecting problem-focused coping), constituting 2 distinct pathways to collective action tendencies. Analyses of the means suggest that collective action tendencies become stronger the more fellow group members "put their money where their mouth is." The relationships of both coping strategies and perceived control to psychological and physiological adjustment were investigated in 115 adults (65 women, 50 men) with Type 2 diabetes. Results showed that (a) emotional preoccupation and palliative coping were positively correlated with depression and state anxiety, whereas perceived control was negatively correlated with depression, state anxiety, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c); (b) instrumental coping predicted lower depression; (c) perceived control moderated the relationships between instrumental coping and depression, and emotional preoccupation coping and HbA1c; and (d) emotional preoccupation coping mediated the relationships between perceived control and depression, and perceived control and state anxiety. Results are discussed in terms of the goodness-of-fit hypothesis (V. J. Conway & D. J. The present study asked: What types of support (emotional, informational, appraisal, and instrumental) do students perceive from the sources of support (parents, teachers, classmates, and close friends)? and Are types of social support more related to students' social, behavioral, and academic outcomes? Gender differences in perceptions of support were also investigated. Data were collected from 263 5th-8th graders using the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale, the Social Skills Rating System, and the Behavior Assessment System for Children. Although early adolescent boys and girls perceive similar levels of all types of support from their parents and teachers, girls perceive more support of most types from classmates and friends. Emotional and informational support were the most highly reported type of support from parents, informational support was most highly reported from teachers, and emotional and instrumental support scores were highest from classmates and close friends. Supportive behaviors from parents contributed to students' adjustment. Emotional support perceived from teachers was a significant and sole individual predictor of students' social skills and academic competence. The present study used an ecological framework to examine the relationships among adolescents’ perceptions of school climate, social competence, and behavioral and psychological adjustment in the middle school years. This study improved upon prior studies by using structural equation modeling to investigate the hypothesized mediating effect of social competence and to account for measurement error. The sample included 1,042 participating students from 23 middle schools. Results showed that school mastery goal structure, promotion of autonomy and discussion, and teacher emotional support were negatively related to the levels of adolescents’ deviant behaviors and depression, while performance goal structure was positively related to deviant behaviors and depression. Social competence was a mediator between perceived school climate variables and adolescent adjustment, with the exception of the relationship between mastery goal structure and adjustment variables. Relationships between distress and perceived availability of social support were examined in 51 Hispanic women being treated for early stage breast cancer. Distress and different types (emotional, instrumental) and sources (spouse, women family members, other family members, friends) of support were measured at presurgery, postsurgery, and at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. Emotional support from friends and instrumental support from spouse at presurgery predicted lower distress postsurgery. No other prospective benefits of perceived support emerged. Distress at several time points predicted erosion of subsequent support, particularly instrumental support from women in the family. In contrast to the adverse effects of distress (and independent of them), illness-related disruption of recreational and social activities at 6 months elicited greater support at 12 months. This study applied self-discrepancy theory (E. T. Higgins, R. N. Bond, R. Klein, & T. Strauman, 1986) to the study of the maternal self-concept and interrole conflict for married professional women with children. The participants, 103 married professional women with young children, completed questionnaires. Each of the 4 self-discrepancy variables was a positive predictor of positive interrole conflict and, with one exception (actual–own:ought–own self-discrepancy), a negative predictor of coping effectiveness. Both structural role redefinition and superwoman coping strategies were positively related to coping effectiveness. Use of the structural role redefinition strategy was positively associated with work support, spousal support, and social support. Work support was negatively related to anxiety and depression, but no significant relations were found between spousal support and other variables. Proposed a causal model that describes the effect of participation in decision making on perceived influence, role conflict, role ambiguity, personal and job-related communications, social support, emotional strain, overall job satisfaction, absenteeism, and turnover intention. The model was tested using a Solomon 4-group design and modified to include 2 posttests; it was conducted in a hospital outpatient facility with 95 nursing and clerical employees who were randomly assigned to an increased-participation or a control condition and to a pretest or no-pretest condition. Outcomes were assessed after 3 and 6 mo. Analysis provided support for a somewhat revised model. After 6 mo, participation was shown to have a significant, negative effect on role conflict and role ambiguity and a positive effect on perceived influence. Role conflict and ambiguity were, in turn, positively related to emotional strain and negatively related to job satisfaction. Emotional strain was positively related to absence frequency and turnover intention. Perceived influence was positively related to job satisfaction and positively related to turnover intention. Participation in decision making appeared to be an important causal determinant of role strains, which were, in turn, important precursors of both individual and organizational outcomes. The relations among physical functioning, social support, depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction were examined in a national sample of 4,734 adults age 65 and older. Regression analyses were used to examine the relative importance of objective and subjective support measures in understanding the relation between physical impairment and quality of life. Impairment was associated with fewer friendship contacts, fewer family contacts, less perceived belonging support, and less perceived tangible aid, but only measures of perceived support predicted depressive symptomatology. A structural equation modeling approach was then used to explore the mediational role of perceived social support in the relation between impairment and quality of life variables. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that lower reported social support is an important reason for decreases in life satisfaction and increases in depressive symptoms found among older adult populations. Implications for understanding the role of social support in attenuating the effects of physical disability in older adults are discussed. Although research has found an association between social anxiety and alcohol use in noncollege samples, results have been mixed for college samples. College students face many novel social situations in which they may drink to reduce social anxiety. In the current study, the authors tested a model of college problem drinking, incorporating social anxiety and related psychosocial variables among 228 undergraduate volunteers. According to structural equation modeling (SEM) results, social anxiety was unrelated to alcohol use and was negatively related to drinking consequences. Perceived drinking norms mediated the social anxiety-alcohol use relation and was the variable most strongly associated with problem drinking. College students appear to be unique with respect to drinking and social anxiety. Although the notion of social anxiety alone as a risk factor for problem drinking was unsupported, additional research is necessary to determine whether there is a subset of socially anxious students who have high drinking norms and are in need of intervention.
