A spherical TiCl4/MgCl2‐based catalyst was used in the synthesis of polyethylene/polypropylene/poly (ethylene‐co‐propylene) in‐reactor alloys by sequential homopolymerization of ethylene, homopolymerization of propylene, and copolymerization of ethylene and propylene in gas‐phase. Different conditions in the third stage, such as the pressure of ethylene–propylene mixture and the feed ratio of ethylene, were investigated, and their influences on the compositions, structural distribution and properties of the in‐reactor alloys were studied. Increasing the feed ratio of ethylene is favorable for forming random ethylene–propylene copolymer and segmented ethylene–propylene copolymer, however, slightly influences the formation of ethylene‐b‐propylene block copolymer and homopolyethylene. Raising the pressure of ethylene–propylene mixture results in the increment of segmented ethylene–propylene copolymer, ethylene‐b‐propylene block copolymer, and PE fractions, but exerts a slight influence on both the random copolymer and PP fractions. The impact strength of PE/PP/EPR in‐reactor alloys can be markedly improved by increasing the feed ratio of ethylene in the ethylene–propylene mixture or increasing the pressure of ethylene–propylene mixture. However, the flexural modulus decreases as the feed ratio of ethylene in the ethylene–propylene mixture or the pressure of ethylene–propylene mixture increases. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A spherical TiCl4/MgCl2‐based catalyst was used in the synthesis of in‐reactor polyethylene/polypropylene alloys by polyethylene homopolymerization and subsequent homopolymerization of propylene in the gas phase. Different conditions in the ethylene homopolymerization stage, such as monomer pressure and polymerization temperature, were investigated, and their influences on the structure and properties of in‐reactor alloys were studied. Raising the polymerization temperature is the most effective way of speeding up polymerization and regulating the ethylene content of polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP) alloys, but it will cause a greater increase in the PE‐b‐PP block copolymer fraction (named fraction D) than in the fraction of PP‐block‐PE in which the PP segments have low or medium isotacticity (named fraction A). Although changing ethylene monomer pressure could influence the ethylene content of PE/PP alloys slightly, it is an effective way of regulating the structural distribution. Reducing the monomer pressure will evidently increase fractions A and D. The mechanical properties of the alloys, including impact strength and flexural modulus, can be regulated in a broad range with changes in polymerization conditions. These properties are highly dependent on the amount, distribution, and chain structure of fractions A and D. The impact strength is affected by both fraction A and fraction D in a complicated way, whereas the flexural modulus is mainly determined by the amount of fraction A. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of isotactic polypropylene (PP), ethylene‐propylene rubber copolymer (EPR), and ethylene‐propylene crystalline copolymer (EPC) can be produced through in situ polymerization processes directly in the reactor and blends with different structure and composition can be obtained. In this work we studied the structure of five reactor‐made blends of PP, EPR, and EPC produced by a Ziegler‐Natta catalyst system. The composition of EPR was related to the ratio between ethylene and propylene used in the copolymerization step. The ethylene content in the EPR was in the range of 50–70 mol %. The crystallization behavior of PP and EPC in the blends was influenced by the presence of the rubber, and some specific interactions between the components could be established. By preparative temperature rising elution fractionation (P‐TREF) analysis, the isolation and characterization of crystalline EPC fractions were made. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Epoxy‐based blends containing poly(ethylene oxide)‐co‐poly(propylene oxide)‐co‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO–PPO–PEO) block copolymers with different PEO/PPO molar ratios have been investigated in order to analyze the effect of the generated morphologies and interactions between components on the mechanical properties of the blends. Mechanical, morphological and dynamic mechanical analyses indicate that the observed increase of flexural modulus can be related to the decrease of free volume. In modified systems that remain miscible, an increase of flexural modulus, strength and fracture toughness can be observed. Also, macrophase‐ and microphase‐separated systems show an increase of fracture toughness but not of flexural modulus and strength at low contents of block copolymers. Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) of polypropylene random copolymer (PPRC) with ethylene–propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) were prepared through in situ and ex situ compatibilization techniques. Silanized silica as nanofiller was incorporated in the ex situ compatibilized TPVs. Mechanical properties were measured for different formulated TPVs with increasing loading of EPDM from 10 to 30 phr. A comparative data is generated to discuss the effect of two compatibilization techniques and addition of silica filler in the TPVs. The degradation studies were also carried out to check the stability of the blends under harsh ultraviolet environment. The in situ compatibilized TPVs provided better overall mechanical properties. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that the properties of ex situ compatiblized TPVs were enhanced by incorporation of silanized silica filler. Silanized silica filler helped in reducing the die swell significantly. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46726.  相似文献

An impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) was fractionated into three fractions using n‐octane as solvent by means of temperature‐gradient extraction fractionation. The glass transitions, melting, and crystallization behavior of these three fractions were studied by modulated differential scanning calorimeter (MDSC) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). In addition, successive self‐nucleation and annealing (SSA) technique was adopted to further examine the heterogeneity and the structure of its fractions. The results reveal that the 50°C fraction (F50) mainly consists of ethylene‐propylene random copolymer and the molecular chains may contain a few of short but crystallizable propylene and/or ethylene unit sequences; moreover, the lamellae thicknesses of the resulting crystals are extremely low. Furthermore, 100°C fraction (F100) mainly consist of some branched polyethylene and various ethylene‐propylene block copolymers in which some ethylene and propylene units also randomly arrange in certain segments, and some polypropylene segments can form crystals with various lamellae thickness. An obvious thermal fractionation effect for F100 samples after being treated by SSA process is ascribed to the irregular and nonuniform arrangement of ethylene and propylene segments. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To extend the practical application of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), the chemical methods were used to improve its mechanical properties. In this connection, random copolymer poly(propylene‐cyclohexyl carbonate) (PPCHC) and di‐block copolymers poly(propylene carbonate‐cyclohexyl carbonate) (PPC‐PCHC) were synthesized. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), nanoindentation and nanoscratch test were applied to evaluate their mechanical properties. The storage's modulus, Young's modulus (E) and hardness (H) obtained from DMA and nanoindentation tests showed that the introduction of the third monomer cyclohexene oxide (CHO) can greatly improve the mechanical properties of PPC, and that the block copolymer PPC‐PCHC hand better mechanical properties than the random copolymer PPCHC. The annealing treated PPC‐PCHCs exhibited deteriorated mechanical properties as compared with untreated PPC‐PCHC. From the results of scratch tests, the plastic deformation of PPC‐PCHC was smaller than those of PPC and PPCHC. Meanwhile, the plastic deformations of the heat‐treated PPC‐PCHCs were smaller than the untreated PPC‐PCHC because of the possible rearrangement of the molecular chains of PPC‐PCHC. The scratch hardness (Hs) of the block copolymer PPC‐PCHC is larger than random polymer PPCHC and PPC, but lower than the values of heat‐treated samples indicating that the surfaces' hardness of block polymers increase after heat treatment. These different measurement methodologies provide a more precise assessment and understanding for the synthesized block polymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

Two polyethylene/polypropylene/poly(ethylene‐co‐propylene) in‐reactor alloy samples with a good polymer particle morphology were synthesized by sequential multistage gas‐phase polymerization with a spherical Ziegler–Natta catalyst. The alloys showed excellent mechanical properties, including both toughness and stiffness. With temperature‐gradient extraction fractionation, both alloys were fractionated into five fractions. The chain structures of the fractions were studied with Fourier transform infrared, 13C‐NMR, and thermal analysis. The alloys were mainly composed of polyethylene, polyethylene‐b‐polypropylene block copolymer, and polypropylene. There also were minor amounts of an ethylene–propylene segmented copolymer with very low crystallinity and an ethylene–propylene random copolymer. The block copolymer fraction accounted for more than 44 wt % of the alloys. The coexistence of these components with different structures was apparently the key factor resulting in the excellent toughness–stiffness balance of the materials. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new copolymer of tris(2‐methoxyethoxy) vinylsilane (TMEVS)‐grafted ethylene–propylene–diene elastomer (EPDM‐g‐TMEVS) has been developed by grafting of TMEVS onto EPDM by using dicumylperoxide (DCP) initiator. The linear polystyrene blends (EPDM‐g‐TMEVS/PS) based on EPDM‐g‐TMEVS have been synthesized with varying weight percentages of polystyrene in a twin‐screw extruder. In a similar manner, the dynamically vulcanized and nanoclay‐reinforced polystyrene blends have also been developed using DCP and organically modified montmorillonite clay separately by means of a twin‐screw extruder. The grafting of TMEVS onto EPDM at allylic position present in the third monomer of EPDM has been confirmed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. The effect of silane‐grafted EPDM and concentration of nanoclay on mechanical properties of polystyrene blends has been studied as per ASTM standards. The morphological behavior of these blends has been investigated using scanning electron microscope. It was observed that the incorporation of silane‐grafted EPDM enhanced the impact strength and the percentage elongation of linear‐ and dynamically vulcanized blends. However, the values of tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness of the blends were found to be decreasing with the increase of silane‐grafted EPDM. In the case of nanoclay‐reinforced polystyrene blends, the values of impact strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness were increased with an increase in the concentration of nanoclay. XRD studies have been carried out to confirm the formation of nanoclay‐reinforced EPDM‐g‐TMEVS/PS blends. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

In situ polymerization and in situ compatibilization was adopted for preparation of ternary PA6/PS‐g‐PA6/PS blends by means of successive polymerization of styrene, with TMI and ε‐caprolactam, via free radical copolymerization and anionic ring‐opening polymerization, respectively. Copolymer poly(St‐g‐TMI), the chain of which bears isocyanate (? NCO), acts as a macroactivator to initiate PA6 chain growth from the PS chain and graft copolymer of PS‐g‐PA6 and pure PA6 form, simultaneously. The effect of the macroactivator poly(St‐g‐TMI) on the phase morphology was investigated in detail, using scanning electron microscopy. In case of blends with higher content of PS‐g‐PA6 copolymer, copolymer nanoparticles coexisting with the PS formed the matrix, in which PA6 microspheres were dispersed evenly as minor phase. The content of the compositions (homopolystyrene, homopolyamide 6, and PS‐g‐PA6) of the blends were determined by selective solvent extraction technique. The mechanical properties of PA6/PS‐g‐PA6/PS blends were better than that of PA6/PS blends. Especially for the blends T10 with lower PS‐g‐PA6 copolymer content, both the flexural strength and flexural modulus showed significantly improving because of the improved interfacial adhesion between PS and PA6. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The compatibilization of various poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blends was investigated. The blend systems were PVC‐polyamide 12 (PA12), PVC‐polypropylene (PP), and PVC‐ethylene‐propylene‐diene rubber (EPDM) with a new compatibilizing agent, random‐block terpolymer poly(ω‐lauryllactam‐random‐?‐caprolactam‐block‐?‐caprolactone) or systems containing these copolymers. The results were compared to those obtained in previous studies using poly(ω‐lauryllactam‐block‐?‐caprolactone) copolymer. The new block copolymer was specially synthesized by reactive extrusion. Observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that compatibilized blends had a finer morphology than the noncompatibilized blends. Addition of 10 weight percent (wt%) of block copolymer proved to be sufficient to give a significant improvement of the mechanical properties of the immiscible PVC blends at room temperature and at high temperatures that were above the glass transition temperature of PVC. For polyolefins, a three‐component compatibilizing system including maleated polypropylene, polyamide 12, and block copolymer was used. It was found that poly(ω‐lauryllactam‐random‐?‐caprolactam‐block‐?‐caprolactone) was the more efficient compatibilizing agent for the modification of PVC‐polyamide 12, PVC‐polypropylene, and PVC‐ethylene‐propylene‐diene rubber blends. Although polypropylene has a unique combination of properties, its impact strength at low temperatures is sometimes insufficient. This need has been met by polypropylene/polyisobutylene blends. Today, polypropylene type copolymers (block copolymers) are available with low temperature toughness and property and processing advantages over the above blends. Ordinarily, copolymers from addition polymerization are random. In a block copolymer, the monomeric units of propylene are segregated from those of the second monomer. A block copolymer, propylene, low pressure polyethylene, ABS and polypropylene-polyisobutylene blends are compared as to general and mechanical properties, stress relaxation, stress rupture performance, low temperature performance (impact strength), high temperature performance (flexural stiffness) and processability. Not every material was used in each test. Block copolymers find applications in automotive and appliance industries, industrial parts and packages for cosmetics and food.  相似文献

Physical blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene isophthalate) (PEI), abbreviated PET/PEI (80/20) blends, and of PET and a random poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate) copolymer containing 40% ethylene isophthalate (PET60I40), abbreviated PET/PET60I40 (50/50) blends, were melt‐mixed at 270°C for different reactive blending times to give a series of copolymers containing 20 mol % of ethylene isophthalic units with different degrees of randomness. 13C‐NMR spectroscopy precisely determined the microstructure of the blends. The thermal and mechanical properties of the blends were evaluated by DSC and tensile assays, and the obtained results were compared with those obtained for PET and a statistically random PETI copolymer with the same composition. The microstructure of the blends gradually changed from a physical blend into a block copolymer, and finally into a random copolymer with the advance of transreaction time. The melting temperature and enthalpy of the blends decreased with the progress of melt‐mixing. Isothermal crystallization studies carried out on molten samples revealed the same trend for the crystallization rate. The effect of reaction time on crystallizability was more pronounced in the case of the PET/PET60I40 (50/50) blends. The Young's modulus of the melt‐mixed blends was comparable to that of PET, whereas the maximum tensile stress decreased with respect to that of PET. All blend samples showed a noticeable brittleness. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 3076–3086, 2003  相似文献

Homopolymerization and copolymerization of α,β,β-trifluoroacrylonitrile (FAN) with γ-olefins were carried out in bulk by γ-ray irradiation at 25°C. FAN gives very small quantities of brown and greasy low molecular weight polymer. Cyano groups in FAN polymer were found to be readily hydrolyzed to acid amide groups in the atmosphere. FAN was found to copolymerize with ethylene, propylene, and isobutylene via a radical mechanism to form equimolar copolymers in a wide range of monomer compositions. The polymerization rate increases linearly with FAN fraction in the monomer mixture. These copolymers are also hydrolyzed in the atmosphere, and the hydrolysis proceeds with more difficulty for the copolymer with higher α-olefin. The reactivity ratios r1 (FAN) and r2 (α-olefin) were determined to be 0.01 and 0.12 for the FAN/ethylene copolymerization and 0.01 and 0.07 for the FAN/propylene copolymerization. These results confirm that an alternating copolymerization takes place in the FAN/α-olefin system.  相似文献

Abstract

The strengthening and toughening of low density polyethylene (LDPE)-polypropylene (PP) blends with a commercial ethylene/propylene block copolymer (CO) have been investigated. It is shown that the addition of the copolymer improved the ductility of the LDPE-PP blends without any loss of elastic modulus. Particularly for the PP rich LDPE-PP blends, the copolymer can improve the ductility, tensile strength and impact strength simultaneously. It was found that the copolymer has no obvious influence on the crystallisation behaviour of the LDPE and PP phases, whereas the interfacial adhesion was enhanced significantly. The results suggested that the ethylene/propylene block copolymer is a suitable compatibiliser for LDPE-PP blends, which can be used as an effective additive for the recycling of the polyalkene mixtures, especially the PP rich LDPE-PP mixtures.  相似文献

In-reactor blends of polypropylene/poly(ethylene-co-propylene) with complex microstructure, synthesized through different polymerization procedures; two-step (one homopolymerization and one copolymerization under high ethylene concentration) and three-step (with an additional copolymerization step under low ethylene concentration), were characterized by rheological measurements. The effects of a change in the polymerization process on the types and amounts of block copolymers in the blends were evaluated using small amplitude oscillation rheometry in the linear viscoelastic region. The Palierne model in its complete form was employed to model the rheological behavior of the blends. For this analysis the reactor products were separated into xylene cold insoluble (XCI) and xylene cold soluble fractions. Besides, another two copolymer fractions at 80 and 100 °C, which are crystallizable copolymer fractions and contain block copolymers rich in polyethylene and polypropylene, respectively, were separated from XCI fraction by xylene using temperature gradient elution fractionation method. Considering all copolymer fractions as dispersed and the remained fraction (mostly polypropylene) as matrix phase, it was shown that the rheological properties of the blends could not be predicted by Palierne model. It was found that only by considering part of block copolymer fractions having long polypropylene sequences along with polypropylene homopolymer as one phase, the rheological properties of the blends could be predicted by Palierne model. By rheological modeling, it was confirmed that the amounts of copolymers with long polypropylene sequences which are miscible with the matrix are higher in the case of three-step blends and also the elasticity of three-step polymerized blends is higher than two-step polymerized blends.  相似文献

To overcome serious rigidity depression of rubber‐toughened plastics and fabricate a rigidity‐toughness balanced thermoplastic, a combination of styrene‐[ethylene‐(ethylene‐propylene)]‐styrene block copolymer (SEEPS) and ethylene‐propylene rubber (EPR) was used to toughen polypropylene. The dynamic mechanical properties, crystallization and melting behavior, and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/EPR/SEEPS blends were studied in detail. The results show that the combination of SEEPS and EPR can achieve the tremendous improvement of low‐temperature toughness without significant strength and rigidity loss. Dynamic mechanical properties and phase morphology results demonstrate that there is a good interfacial strength and increased loss of compound rubber phase comprised of EPR component and EP domain of SEEPS. Compared with PP/EPR binary blends, although neither glass transition temperature (Tg) of the rubber phase nor Tg of PP matrix in PP/EPR/SEEPS blends decreases, the brittle‐tough transition temperature (Tbd) of PP/EPR/SEEPS blends decreases, indicating that the increased interfacial interaction between PP matrix and compound rubber phase is also an effective approach to decrease Tbd of the blends so as to improve low‐temperature toughness. The balance between rigidity and toughness of PP/EPR/SEEPS blends is ascribed to the synergistic effect of EPR and SEEPS on toughening PP. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Ethylene–propylene copolymerization with a TiCl4/MgCl2 type ZN catalyst was conducted for different durations from 30 to 600 s, and changes of polymerization rate, concentration of active centers ([C*]) and copolymer chain structure with time were traced. The copolymerization rate decayed with time, but [C*]/[Ti] increased in the same period. This was attributed to release of more active sites through disintegration of catalyst particles by the growing polymer phase. Ethylene content of the copolymer quickly decreased in the period of 30–90 s, meaning that the active centers activated in the reaction process have stronger ability of incorporating propylene than those activated at the very beginning. The copolymer samples were fractionated into two parts, namely n‐heptane soluble fraction (random copolymer) and insoluble fraction (segmented copolymer with high ethylene content). With continuation of the copolymerization, active centers producing the random copolymer chains increased much faster than active centers producing the segmented copolymer chains, and became the dominant centers after 120 s. Consequently, proportion of the soluble fraction sharply increased with time. All these results indicate that the active centers located on the external surface of catalyst particles are highly different from those buried inside the particles. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. The functions of crystallizable ethylene‐propylene copolymers in the formation of multiple phase morphology of high impact polypropylene (hiPP) were studied by solvent extraction fractionation, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), nuclear magnetic resonance (13C‐NMR), and selected reblending of different fractions of hiPP. The results indicate that hiPP contains, in addition to polypropylene (PP) and amorphous ethylene‐propylene random copolymer (EPR) as well as a small amount of polyethylene (PE), a series of crystallizable ethylene‐propylene copolymers. The crystallizable ethylene‐propylene copolymers can be further divided into ethylene‐propylene segmented copolymer (PE‐s‐PP) with a short sequence length of PE and PP segments, and ethylene‐propylene block copolymer (PE‐b‐PP) with a long sequence length of PE and PP blocks. PE‐s‐PP and PE‐b‐PP participate differently in the formation of multilayered core‐shell structure of the dispersed phase in hiPP. PE‐s‐PP (like PE) constructs inner core, PE‐b‐PP forms outer shell, while intermediate layer is resulted from EPR. The main reason of the different functions of the crystallizable ethylene‐propylene copolymers is due to their different compatibility with the PP matrix. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effectiveness of P(E‐co‐MA‐co‐GMA) as a compatibilizer for recycled PET/PP and recycled PET/PP‐EP (polypropylene (ethylene‐propylene) heterophase copolymer) blends was investigated by means of morphological (scanning electron microscopy), rheological (small amplitude oscillatory shear), mechanical (tensile, flexural and impact tests), and thermal (differential scanning calorimetry) properties. Compatibilizer concentration ranged from 1 to 5 wt % with respect to the whole blend. All blends were obtained in a 90/10 composition using a twin screw extruder. Compatibilization effects for PETr/PP‐EP were more pronounced due to ethylene segments present in both PP‐EP and P(E‐co‐EA‐co‐GMA). PETr/PP‐EP has shown greater dispersed phase size reduction, a more solid‐like complex viscosity behavior and larger storage modulus at low frequencies in relation to PETr/PP blend. For both investigated blends, mechanical properties indicated an improvement in both elongation at break and impact strength with increasing compatibilizer content. PETr/PP‐EP blends showed improved performance for the same level of compatibilizer content. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41892.  相似文献
