This conference will cover many aspects of tunnel use and design. Experts from a broad range of disciplines will share with us their experiences and no doubt, at times their frustrations encountered in getting the job done. Most will focus only on their particular field. Some however will be responsible for the eventual overall outcome which is the ongoing life of the tunnel and its intended use. We each have our barrow to push, and in the case of emergency services it's the safety of the tunnel user and emergency service workers called in when things go wrong. In this paper I will attempt to explain where we are coming from and why. To this end the paper is not a technical one but intended more as a guide on the needs and processes. At the end of this conference I hope it will be clearer to all of us who we are designing tunnels for.  相似文献

Environmental concerns have begun to receive increasing levels of attention with much of the onus for improved environmental stewardship falling on the industrial business community. The pressures on firms from consumers, legislation, financial sources and larger firms will inexorably increase. If firms choose to wait until pressured to change, the change when it is imposed will most likely be expensive and painful. Adopting and integrating such philosophy in a pragmatic manner into the business activities will allow the firm to benefit from the environmental challenges. Improving manufacturing processes, reducing waste etc., will have direct financial benefit. But taking a hard look at the product and how it is produced, with the involvement of all staff, will create a dynamic environment where opportunities for improvement and change will present themselves. This is particularly true for SMEs which, having good internal communication combined with the potential for being both flexible and specific, are well placed to identify and capitalise on new markets for their products and services  相似文献

More responsibilities for planning water resources are being placed on local planners at a time when demand for water services is uncertain and financial conditions are pressing. Planners will need to scrutinize and refine conventional criteria for evaluating proposed expansions in the capacity of water and wastewater systems. They will have to counterbalance traditional engineering approaches to planning, which emphasize economy of scale, by paying more attention to finance rates and demand forecasting. And they will need to consider rehabilitating water and wastewater systems—as both a supplement and an alternative to expanding them—in making decisions about local infrastructure.  相似文献

Urban food supply will be a key issue for cities in the coming decades, and cities will increasingly turn to their own hinterlands for some types of food. Many of China's cities are better placed to do so than comparably sized cities in developed countries, although some inland cities will fare better than wealthy, export-dependent coastal cities. However, rapid urbanization is putting increasing pressure on previously agricultural districts around these cities. We illustrate using data on local food supplies in Chengdu, Nanjing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, and draw some conclusions about planning for food security in China.  相似文献

It will ask the question whether it is the decision makers we need to focus on, or if the development of urban underground space involves further stakeholders. The paper will look at the way the ITA Committee of Underground Space has worked in advocating underground space for the past 8 years.
