XVIII International Congress of Psychology.

This document announces that for the first time in the history of our science an international congress of psychologists will be convened in the USSR. The XVIII International Congress of Psychology, organized by the Soviet Psychological Society under the auspices of the International Union of Scientific Psychology, will take an outstanding place among other congresses for the scope of the problems which will be discussed at it, as well as for the wide representation of psychologists of different countries who will participate in its work. It will also be distinguished for the character of its organization. The Congress will take place in Moscow between August 4 and 11, 1966. The programme of its plenary sessions will include, along with the opening speech of Prof. A. N. Leontiev, President of the Congress, three lectures which will be delivered by celebrated psychologists of different countries. Prof. Jean Piaget (Switzerland) will devote his lecture to the question of the place of psychology among other sciences; Prof. Neal Miller (USA) will consider the achievements of modern psychophysiology in the field of studying the problem of drives; Prof. A. A. Smirnov (USSR) will lecture on the ways of development of psychology in the Soviet Union. This document discusses the Congress in further detail. XXth International Congress of Psychology.

The XXth International Congress of Psychology will be held in Tokyo, Japan, August 13-19, 1972. The Congress will be opened with formal addresses and an official reception on Sunday, August 13. Scientific sessions will begin on the morning of August 14. Topics covered include the following: (1) Membership; (2) Academic Program; (3) Film of Research; (4) Informal Discussion Meeting; (5) Accommodations; and (6) Communications. South Thames Nuclear Medicine Survey 1996-97. South Thames Regional Nuclear Medicine Specialty Service Committee

Data on the equipment available, staffing levels, number and type of procedures carried out in the South Thames Region during 1993-94 and 1996-97 are presented. These are compared with national data for 1993. The number of gamma cameras has increased by 5%, overall staffing by 15% and the number of procedures has increased by 31%. There has been a disproportionate increase in the technically more complex procedures, for example cardiac tomography (84%). Regional data have been collated since 1979 and techniques have been established to ensure consistency. Staffing levels, although improving, do not meet the minimum levels recommended by professional bodies. This raises questions about the quality and, possibly, the legality of the service provision.     

The formation and evolution of the Society of Nuclear Medicine

The Society of Nuclear Medicine was created and constructed by persons from many branches of medicine and the physical sciences, but it originated mostly in the mind of a chemist-physicist-engineer named Norman "Jeff" Holter. Because most medical organizations seemed to care little about the use of radioactive materials for medical purposes, Holter believed a new organization was necessary for their promotion. From its origin in 1954 as the Pacific Northwest Society of Nuclear Medicine, The Society of Nuclear Medicine became a national, multidisciplinary organization in 1956. Rapidly gathering strength with an expanding membership, it employed an administrator in 1959. With this administrator and a dedicated volunteer editor, publication of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine began. Over the next several years the Society evolved into an active force in the development of the application of radioactivity to medical applications. It generated significant internal initiatives and participated in the generation of several important external institutions. The Society of Nuclear Medicine developed a tradition of annual meetings with strong educational programs for all members. By nurturing and embracing the Technologist Section, the Society became a robust and representative organization for all who serve nuclear medicine. From these beginnings came the vigorous Society of Nuclear Medicine of today. Jeff Holter (1914-1983) would be justifiably proud.     

The 20th International Congress of Applied Psychology.

Lists the speakers and their topics that were presented at the 20th International Congress of Applied Psychology (ICAP), which was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, July 15–31, 1982. Specific sessions and exhibits are described. During the ICAP, the executive committee approved 3 new divisions: Clinical and Community; Gerontological Psychology; and Instructional, Educational, and School Psychology. International Emergency Medicine Reference List

Mirtazapine is a newer antidepressant that exhibits both noradrenergic and serotonergic activity. It is at least as effective as the older antidepressants for treating mild to severe depression. Sedation is the most common side effect. Although agranulocytosis is the most serious side effect, it is rare (approximately one in 1,000) and usually reversible when the medication is stopped. Mirtazapine is relatively safe in overdose. Many clinicians consider mirtazapine a second-line or even third-line antidepressant to be used when older antidepressants are not tolerated or are ineffective. Physicians who are concerned about the risks of elevated lipid levels and agranulocytosis may choose to reserve mirtazapine as a third-line choice. It is particularly useful in patients who experience sexual side effects from other antidepressants. Mirtazapine is also a good choice in depressed patients with significant anxiety or insomnia. Although mirtazapine has been used successfully in Europe for a number of years, its place in the care of patients with depression in the United States has not yet been established.     

International Microsurgical Society Thirteenth Congress: some historical highlights

Functional recovery following motor nerve injury and repair is directly related to the degree of muscle atrophy that takes place during the period of nerve regeneration. The extent of this muscle atrophy is related to a number of factors including the accuracy of nerve repair; the distance through which the nerve must regenerate; the age of the patient; and the type of nerve injury and other associated tendon and soft tissue and bony damage. Atrophy of muscle that is always associated with nerve injury is a combination of disuse and degeneration. Our hypothesis proposed the following question: "Would continuous electrical stimulation of the denervated muscle during the period of nerve regeneration maintain the integrity of the muscle fibers and hence their potential functional capacity?" We have completed a series of animal studies (rabbit and canine models) in our laboratory using a completely implantable system to provide continuous muscle stimulation following nerve injury and microsurgical repair. In several different experiments, the nerves under study were cut and repaired at 4 and 12 cm from the muscles to study the effects of short- and long-term recovery. In all experiments, a beneficial effect was demonstrated with improved morphology and functional capacity of the reinnervated stimulated muscles when compared with nonstimulated controls. In addition, electrical stimulation using this implantable system could be applied for extended periods without evidence of discomfort in the experimental animals.     

XVIIth International Congress of Psychology: Young Psychologists Project.

An APA Travel Fund permitted 22 young psychologists from abroad to attend the congress. Each is identified by name, country, interest field, and United States host (an APA member in the Washington area). A photograph of the student group is provided.
