In this study, biobased polyester-ether polyols derived from meso-lactide and dimer acids were evaluated for flexible polyurethane foams (PUF) applications. Initially, the catalyst concentration was optimized for the biobased PUF containing 30% of biobased polyol (70% petroleum-based polyol). Then, the same formulation was used for biobased PUF synthesis containing 10%–40% of biobased polyols. The performance of biobased PUF was compared with the performance of the control foam made with 100% petroleum-based polyol. The characteristic times (cream, top of the cup, string gel, rise, tack-free) of biobased PUF were determined. The biobased PUF were evaluated for the mechanical (tensile and compressive) and morphological properties. As the wet compression set is important for automotive applications, it was measured for all biobased PUF. The thermal degradation behavior of biobased PUF was also evaluated and compared with the control foam. The effect of different hydroxyl and acid values of polyols on the mechanical properties of biobased PUF is also discussed. The miscibility of all components of PUF formulations is crucial in order to produce a foam with uniform properties. Thus, the miscibility of biobased polyols with commercial petroleum-based polyol was studied.  相似文献

Rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) were prepared from polymeric 4,4‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI; having functionality of 2.9), polyether polyols, silicone surfactant, amine catalysts, and distilled water. The effects of reactivity on the properties such as density, compressive and flexural strength, and glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the PUF samples were studied. The kinetic rate of forming the PUF samples was increased with the catalyst and water content. With increasing OH value and functionality of the polyols, the density and compressive strength of the PUF samples also increased. For the PUF samples synthesized with polyols having high functionality (>5), the flexural strength of the PUF samples decreased with the functionality of the polyols. With increasing OH value and functionality of the polyols, the Tg of the PUF increased because of an increase in the degree of crosslinking of the PUF samples. The Tg value and compressive strength of the PUF samples were observed to increase with the NCO index. From this result, it was suggested that the increase in the Tg value and compressive strength of the PUF samples may be attributable to the additional crosslinks that arose from allophonate and biuret formation by the supplementary reactions of excess PMDI. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyurethane consumption has been increasing in recent years, raising concerns about how to deal with the polymer waste. Post‐consumer rigid polyurethane foams or polyurethane foam scraps (PPU) ground into particles were utilized to strengthen mechanical properties of rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) and phenolic foam (PF). Viscosity of prepolymer with PUF was measured and PPU was well dispersed in prepolymer, as observed by optical microscope. Microstructures and morphologies of the reinforced foam were examined with scanning electron microscope (SEM) while cell diameter and density were measured by Scion Image software. Universal testing machine was employed to optimize compressive properties at various weight ratios of PPU. Both PUF and PF with 5 wt % PPU, respectively, exhibited considerable improvement in mechanical properties especially compressive property. The compressive modulus of PUF with 5 wt % PPU was 12.07 MPa, almost 20% higher than pure PUF while compressive strength of PF with 5 wt % PPU reached 0.48 MPa. The thermal stability of the reinforced foam was tested by thermal gravity analysis (TGA) and the result shows no obvious impact with PPU. The decomposition temperatures of PUF with PPU and PF with PPU were 280°C, because PPU has relatively weak thermal stability. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The use of renewable resources (mainly carbohydrates) in rigid polyurethane foam has been known to offer several advantages, such as increased strength, improved flame resistance, and enhanced biodegradability. Less attention has been directed to inexpensive protein‐based materials, such as defatted soy flour. The objectives of this study were to develop water‐blown rigid polyurethane foams, containing defatted soy flour, that have acceptable or improved physical properties which also lower the cost of the foam formulation and to compare the properties of developed foams extended with three kinds of commercial soy flour. Water‐blown low‐density rigid polyurethane foams were prepared with poly(ether polyol)s, polymeric isocyanates, defatted soy flour, water, a catalyst mixture, and a surfactant. Soy flour and the initial water content were varied from 0 to 40% and from 4.5 to 5.5% of the poly(ether polyol) content, respectively. A standard laboratory mixing procedure was followed for making foams using a high‐speed industrial mixer. After mixing, the mixture was poured into boxes and allowed to rise at ambient conditions. Foams were removed from boxes after 1 h and cured at room temperature for 24 h before measurement of the thermal conductivity and for 1 week before other property tests. Foam properties were determined according to ASTM procedures. Measurement of the physical properties (compressive strength, modulus, thermal conductivity, and dimensional stability under thermal and humid aging) of these foams showed that the addition of 10–20% of three kinds of soy flour imparted water‐blown rigid polyurethane foams with similar or improved strength, modulus, insulation, and dimensional stability. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) filled with mixture of alumina trihydrate (ATH) and triphenyl phosphate (TPP) as fire retardant additive was prepared with water as a blowing agent. In this study, the ATH content was varied from 10 to 100 parts per hundred polyol by weight (php), and TPP was used at a higher loading of ATH (75 and 100 php) in a ratio of 1 : 5 to enhance the processing during PUF preparation. The effects of ATH on properties such as density, compressive strength, morphological, thermal conductivity, thermal stability, flame‐retardant (FR) behavior, and smoke characteristics were studied. The density and compressive strength of the ATH‐filled PUF decreased initially and then increased with further increase in ATH content. There was no significant change in the thermal stability with increasing ATH loading. We determined the FR properties of these foam samples by measuring the limiting oxygen index (LOI), smoke density, rate of burning, and char yield. The addition of ATH with TPP to PUF significantly decreased the flame‐spread rate and increased LOI. The addition of TPP resulted in easy processing and also improved FR characteristics of the foam. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Effects of wood flour species and polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride (MA‐PE) on mechanical properties and morphology and torque rheology of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/wood flour composites have been comparatively investigated. The results demonstrated that without compatbilizer, wood flour species exhibited little influence on mechanical properties. In the presence of MA‐PE, the mechanical properties were obviously increased. On the basis of the mechanical property data obtained from wood flour extracted by different methods, the extractant was an important factor affecting the mechanical properties. Manchurian ash and larch wood flours extracted by hot water presented almost the same mechanical properties, and larch wood flour was the most beneficial to enhance the mechanical properties. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the atomic force microscopy (AFM) further confirmed that interfacial adhesion and dispersion of manchurian ash wood flour in composites were effectively improved by MA‐PE. The torque results demonstrated that the chemical reactions of maleic anhydride groups on MA‐PE with hydroxyl on cellulose in wood flour probably took place due to the increase of the equilibrium torque and the appearance of the torque peak, and larch wood flour was more beneficial to prepare the composites containing the higher wood flour content. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water‐blown rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) with two different particle sizes (180 and 300 μm) of expandable graphite (EG) as a flame‐retardant additive were prepared, and the effects on the mechanical, morphological, water absorption, thermal conductivity, thermal, and flame‐retardant properties were studied. In this investigation, EG content was varied from 5 to 50 php by weight. The mechanical properties of PUF decreased with increasing EG loading in both cases. The water absorption of the PUF increased with an increase in the EG loading mainly because of the collapse of foam cells, as evidenced from the scanning electron microscopy pictures. The thermal conductivity of the EG‐filled PUF showed that the insulation properties decreased with EG loading. The flame‐retardant properties (limiting oxygen index and char yield measurement) of the PUF improved with increasing EG loading. PUF filled with the higher particle size EG showed better mechanical properties and fire‐retardant properties than the PUF filled with the lower particle size EG. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquefaction is known to be an effective method for converting biomass into a polyol. However, the relationships between bark liquefaction conditions and properties of the resulting foams are unclear. In this study, polyurethane foams (PUF) were made using bark‐based polyols obtained through liquefaction reactions of bark at two different temperatures (90 and 130°C). Through systematic characterization of the PUFs the influence of the liquefied bark and liquefaction conditions on foam properties could be observed. The bark‐based foams had similar foaming kinetics, thermal stability, and glass transition temperatures compared with the PEG‐based control foam. The bark‐based PUF from the polyol obtained at the higher liquefaction temperature showed comparable specific compressive strength to the PEG‐based control foam. Lastly, both bark foams exhibited a high amount of open‐cell content, with the foam made from the lower temperature liquefied polyol having poor cell morphology. This deviation from the controls in the open‐cell content may explain the lower modulus values observed in the bark PUFs due to the lack of cell membrane elastic stretching as a strengthening mechanism. These results demonstrated the influence of the bark liquefaction conditions on foam properties, thereby providing a better fundamental understanding for the practical application of bark‐based PUFs. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The purpose of this study is to develop a protective and thermally intelligent filler by optimizing the preparing conditions and the thermoresponsive property of PU foam. The specimens were polyurethane synthesized by a one step process with 4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate, polycaprolactone and 1,4‐butanediol. After dissolving the polyurethane in tetrahydrofuran, the polyurethane foam was manufactured by the salt leaching method. The appearance, compressive property, and thermal property of the manufactured foam as well as the shape memory effects were evaluated. In addition, air and water vapor permeabilities and the thermal insulation property were measured to examine the basic properties of the foam. The cell sizes of the completed foam were distributed in the range of 400–1,000 μm. The compressive stress of the foam was low in the initial compressive strain but increased dramatically above a compressive strain of 70%. However, the foam showed a very low capacity for compressive stress compared with an electrospun web or a film manufactured by using the identical shape memory polyurethane. The transition temperature of the foam was 30°C. The shape recovery and shape retention were 98% or higher. The foam, with a porous structure, was found to be generally good in both air and water vapor permeability. In the case of the foam that maintained its compressed shape below the transition temperature, these permeabilities of the foam decreased slightly, but not significantly. Because of the porous structure of the foam, the shape memory effect did not noticeably influence the permeability change with a change in temperature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyurethane foams (PUFs) are widely used materials because of their wide range of applications, particularly, thermal and sound insulation, mattresses, furniture, construction, cushioning, packaging, transportation of goods, etc. Recently, commercial PUF products fabricated from plant oil (PO)‐based polyols have gained increasing popularity, because of their low cost and eco‐friendly nature in comparison to petroleum‐based PUF. To date, insufficient reviews have been reported in the area of modification of plant oils for synthesizing polyol for foam synthesis. Due to abundant availability, low‐cost, and renewable nature of plant oils, they are being used as precursors for modern polyurethane industry use. There is a need for versatile and economical methods for conversion of plant oils such as castor oil (CO) and soybean oil (SO) into useful polyols for industry use. This review is an overview of the most recent advanced methods for the conversion of plant oils into polyol and further utilization of it for commercial PUF products. Since the last decade, many researchers have shown that plant‐polyol‐derived PUF can compete with conventional PUF. Practical Applications: Practical applications of the PO‐based polyurethane foams include thermal insulation, sound insulation, packaging, and waste water treatment.  相似文献

Fifty vegetable oil‐based polyols were characterized in terms of their hydroxyl number and their potential of replacing up to 50% of the petroleum‐based polyol in waterborne rigid polyurethane foam applications was evaluated. Polyurethane foams were prepared by reacting isocyanates with polyols containing 50% of vegetable oil‐based polyols and 50% of petroleum‐based polyol and their thermal conductivity, density, and compressive strength were determined. The vegetable oil‐based polyols included epoxidized soybean oil reacted with acetol, commercial soybean oil polyols (soyoils), polyols derived from epoxidized soybean oil and diglycerides, etc. Most of the foams made with polyols containing 50% of vegetable oil‐based polyols were inferior to foams made from 100% petroleum‐based polyol. However, foams made with polyols containing 50% hydroxy soybean oil, epoxidized soybean oil reacted with acetol, and oxidized epoxidized diglyceride of soybean oil not only had superior thermal conductivity, but also better density and compressive strength properties than had foams made from 100% petroleum polyol. Although the epoxidized soybean oil did not have any hydroxyl functional group to react with isocyanate, when used in 50 : 50 blend with the petroleum‐based polyol the resulting polyurethane foams had density versus compressive properties similar to polyurethane foams made from 100% petroleum‐based polyol. The density and compressive strength of foams were affected by the hydroxyl number of polyols, but the thermal conductivity of foams was not. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As environment friendly polymers are required to reduce the green-house gas emissions and global warming, bio-based polyurethane foam (PUF) is attracting interest from the industrial sector and researchers. Bio-based polyols for PUF have been synthesized from various renewable resources, mostly plant oils. The present study explored a novel bio-based PUF produced from a mixture of bio-based polyols synthesized from palm oil and natural rubber. Palm oil-based polyol (POP) was synthesized via an epoxidation reaction of double bonds of palm oil followed by complete oxirane ring-opening. Hydroxy telechelic natural rubber (HTNR) was synthesized by oxidative degradation using periodic acid and sodium borohydride. For comparison, two diisocyanates were used: toluene-2,4-diisocyanate and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate. POP and HTNR were miscible and all PUFs showed polyhedral semi-closed cells and hardness was in the flexible foam range. One possible application of the novel PUF could be thermal insulation.  相似文献

Polyurethane foam was fabricated from polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI) and soy‐based polyol. Nanoclay Cloisite 30B was incorporated into the foam systems to improve their thermal stabilities and mechanical properties. Neat polyurethane was used as a control. Soy‐based polyurethane foams with 0.5–3 parts per hundred of polyols by weight (php) of nanoclay were prepared. The distribution of nanoclay in the composites was analyzed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and the morphology of the composites was analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal properties were evaluated through dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Compression and three‐point bending tests were conducted on the composites. The densities of nanoclay soy‐based polyurethane foams were higher than that of the neat soy‐based polyurethane foam. At a loading of 0.5 php nanoclay, the compressive, flexural strength, and modulus of the soy‐based polyurethane foam were increased by 98%, 26%, 22%, and 65%, respectively, as compared to those of the neat soy‐based polyurethane foam. The storage modulus of the soy‐based polyurethane foam was improved by the incorporation of nanoclay. The glass transition temperature of the foam was increased as the nanoclay loading was increased. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Liquefaction of waste paper (WP) was conducted in the presence of polyhydric alcohols to prepare biodegradable polyurethane foam. The liquefied‐WP‐based polyol had suitable characteristics such as apparent molecular weight, hydroxyl value, and viscosity for the preparation of rigid polyurethane foam and was successfully applied to produce polyurethane foam with the appropriate combinations of foaming agents. The obtained foams showed satisfactory densities and mechanical properties as good as those of foams obtained from liquefied wood‐ and starch‐based polyols. The foams had almost the same thermal stability at initial weight loss and seemed to be potentially biodegradable because they were degraded to some extent in leaf mold. There were no mutagens or carcinogens in the water extracts of the foams. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 1482–1489, 2002  相似文献

Density is an important parameter that influences the properties and performances of rigid polyurethane foam (PUF). Rigid PUF with different densities were prepared by varying the amount of distilled water as blowing agent. This investigation reports the mechanical, morphological, water absorption, thermal conductivity, and thermal behavior of rigid PUF varying with the density, which controls the foam architecture. The density of the PUF decreased from 116 to 42 kg/m3 with an increase in the amount of water from 0.1 to 3.0 parts per hundred polyol by weight (phr), respectively. It was found that the mechanical properties of the PUFs changed with the foam density. The results of water absorption of the PUFs showed that water absorption increased with decrease in density, due to increase in the cell size and decrease in the cell‐wall thickness. The thermal conductivity measurements showed that the thermal conductivity decreased with increase in density. It was due to the decrease in cell size. The thermal analysis of the PUFs shows that the glass transition temperature increases with the decrease in foam density, but the thermal stability decreases with the decrease in foam density. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Both HCFC‐ and pentane‐blown rigid polyurethane foams have been prepared from polyols derived from soybean oil. The effect of formulation variables on foam properties was studied by altering the types and amounts of catalyst, surfactant, water, crosslinker, blowing agent, and isocyanate, respectively. While compressive strength of the soy foams is optimal at 2 pph of surfactant B‐8404, it increases with increasing the amount of water, glycerin, and isocyanate. It also increases linearly with foam density. These foams were found to have comparable mechanical and thermoinsulating properties to foams of petrochemical origin. A comparison in the thermal and thermo‐oxidative behaviors of soy‐ and PPO‐based foams revealed that the former is more stable toward both thermal degradation and thermal oxidation. The lack of ether linkages in the soy‐based rather than in PPO‐based polyols is thought to be the origin of improved thermal and thermo‐oxidative stabilities of soy‐based foams. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
