In this paper, we present a novel scheme for the multicast transmission of data over Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks. Apart from the normal multicast transmission over UMTS, we consider the handling of exceptional cases caused by user mobility scenarios. The proposed scheme is in accordance with the current specifications of the Multimedia Multicast/Broadcast Service (MBMS) defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and introduces minor modifications in the UMTS architecture and the mobility management mechanisms. The proposed scheme is implemented as an ns-2 network simulator module. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated and analyzed through ns-2 simulation experiments. This new module can be employed to investigate various aspects of UMTS multicast. Furthermore, in order to further highlight the contribution of our mechanism, we have implemented two multicast congestion control mechanisms for UMTS and we have measured their performance for MBMS transmissions.  相似文献

Along with the widespread deployment of the Third Generation (3G) cellular networks, the fast‐improving capabilities of the mobile devices, content, and service providers are increasingly interested in supporting multicast communications over wireless networks and in particular over Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). To this direction, the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is currently standardizing the Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) framework of UMTS. In this paper, we present an overview of the MBMS multicast mode of UMTS. We analytically present the multicast mode of the MBMS and analyze its performance in terms of packet delivery cost under various network topologies, cell types, and multicast users' distributions. Furthermore, for the evaluation of the scheme, we consider different transport channels for the transmission of the multicast data over the UMTS Terrestrial Radio‐Access Network (UTRAN) interfaces. This article aims to investigate multicast deployment issues and requirements in the context of UMTS networks. We propose a multicast mechanism that supports resource-efficient multicast packet delivery. The proposed scheme allows multicast packets to be transferred in an optimal manner on shared links toward multiple destinations. We describe the mechanisms of the proposed scheme in establishing multicast tunnels within the network and performing group management. We explore the differences between the proposed scheme and the multimedia broadcast/multicast service of the 3GPP, and outline the advantages and disadvantages of both multicast schemes.  相似文献

PGM congestion control (pgmcc), a single‐rate multicast congestion control scheme, is one of the most promising schemes which aim to solve the problem of multicast fairness with TCP. However, by deep investigation, we find that there exist two inappropriate mechanisms in this scheme, which are the fixed slow start threshold (ssthresh) and the mechanism of changing a group representative (acker). Our experiments have revealed the fact that these mechanisms can lead to the unfairness of pgmcc under some network conditions. In this paper, two new mechanisms have been proposed to replace the original ones. One mechanism is to make the sender adapt the value of ssthresh to the network conditions to mimic the action of TCP, and in order to avoid being more aggressive than TCP, the other one is to make the sender reduce the congestion window by half when the acker changes. Our experiment results, parts of which are discussed in this paper, show that the modified pgmcc can achieve better performance than the original one. Most existing reliable multicast congestion control (RMCC) mechanisms try to emulate TCP congestion control behaviors for achieving TCP-compatibility. However, different loss recovery mechanisms employed in reliable multicast protocols, especially NAK-based retransmission and local loss recovery mechanisms, may lead to different behaviors and performance of congestion control. As a result, reliable multicast flows might be identified and treated as non-TCP-friendly by routers in the network. It is essential to understand those influences and take them into account in the development and deployment of reliable multicast services. In this paper, we study the influences comprehensively through analysis, modelling and simulations. We demonstrate that NAK-based retransmission and/or local loss recovery mechanisms are much more robust and efficient in recovering from single or multiple packet losses within a single round-trip time (RTT). For a better understanding on the impact of loss recovery on RMCC, we derive expressions for steady-state throughput of NAK-based RMCC schemes, which clearly brings out the throughput advantages of NAK-based RMCC over TCP Reno. We also show that timeout effects have little impact on shaping the performance of NAK-based RMCC schemes except for extremely high loss rates (>0.2). Finally, we use simulations to validate our findings and show that local loss recovery may further increase the throughput and deteriorate the fairness properties of NAK-based RMCC schemes. Our scheme is applied when the mobile user experiences real time multimedia content and adopts the theory of a widely accepted rate control method in wired networks, namely equation‐based rate control. In this approach, the transmission rate of the multimedia data is determined as a function of the packet loss rate, the round trip time and the packet size and the server explicitly adjusts its sending rate as a function of these parameters. Through a number of simulations and experiments we validate the correctness and measure the performance and efficiency of the mechanism. A first level of evaluation is carried out using the ns‐2 simulator. In this article we present a simulation‐based comparison of one of the best‐known multicast congestion control schemes—TCP‐friendly Multicast Congestion Control (TFMCC)—against our proposed Adaptive Smooth Multicast Protocol (ASMP). ASMP consists of a single‐rate multicast congestion control mechanism which takes advantage of the RTCP Sender (SR) and Receiver Reports (RR) in order to adjust the sender's transmission rate in respect of the network conditions. The innovation in ASMP lays in the ‘smooth’ transmission rate, which is TCP‐friendly and prevents oscillations. We use an integrated simulation environment named Multi‐Evalvid‐RA for the evaluation of the two congestion control schemes. Multi‐Evalvid‐RA provides all the necessary tools to perform simulation studies and assess video quality by using both network‐centric metrics along with video quality measurements. Performance evaluation results show that ASMP is a very efficient solution for rate‐adaptive multimedia applications and a serious competitor to well‐known TFMCC. In this paper, we describe a mechanism for adaptive transmission of multimedia data, which is based on real‐time protocols. The proposed mechanism can be used for unicast or multicast transmission of multimedia data over heterogeneous networks, like the Internet, and has the capability to adapt the transmission of the multimedia data to network changes. In addition, the implemented mechanism uses an inter‐receiver fairness function in order to treat the group of clients with fairness during the multicast transmission in a heterogeneous environment. The proposed mechanism uses a ‘friendly’ to the network users congestion control policy to control the transmission of the multimedia data. We implement a prototype application based on the proposed mechanism and we evaluate the proposed mechanism both in unicast and multicast transmission through a number of experiment and a number of simulations in order to examine its fairness to a group of clients and its behaviour against transport protocols (TCP) and UDP data streams. To solve the IP mobility problem, the use of multicast has been proposed in a number of different approaches, applying multicast in different characteristic ways. We provide a systematic discussion of fundamental options for multicast‐based mobility support and the definition and experimental performance evaluation of selected schemes. The discussion is based on an analysis of the architectural, performance‐related, and functional requirements. By using these requirements and selecting options regarding network architecture and multicast protocols, we identify promising combinations and derive four case studies for multicast‐based mobility in IP‐based cellular networks. These case studies include both the standard any‐source IP multicast model as well as non‐standard multicast models, which optimally utilize the underlying multicast. We describe network architecture and protocols as well as a flexible software environment that allows to easily implement these and other classes of mobility‐supporting multicast protocols. Multicast schemes enable a high degree of flexibility for mobility mechanisms in order to meet the service quality required by the applications with minimal protocol overhead. We evaluate this overhead using our software environment by implementing prototypes and quantifying handoff‐specific metrics, namely, handoff and paging latency, packet loss and duplication rates, as well as TCP goodput. The measurement results show that these multicast‐based schemes improve handoff performance for high mobility in comparison to the reference cases: basic and hierarchical Mobile IP. Comparing the multicast‐schemes among each other the performance for the evaluated metrics is very similar. As a result of the conceptual framework classification and our performance evaluations, we justify specific protocol mechanisms that utilize specific features of the multicast. Based on this justification, we advocate the usage of a source‐specific multicast service model for multicast‐based mobility support that adverts the weaknesses of the classical Internet any‐source multicast service model. Hybrid coupling scheme for UMTS and wireless LAN interworking   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We propose a hybrid coupling scheme to support interworking between UMTS and WLAN networks. Under the Tight-coupled system, it is expected that WLAN users can also use UMTS services with guaranteed QoS and seamless mobility. However, the interworking is problematic. The capacity of UMTS core network nodes cannot accommodate the bulky data traffic from WLAN, since the core network nodes are designed to handle the small-sized data of circuit voice calls or short packets. The proposed coupling scheme differentiates the data paths according to the type of the traffic and can accommodate traffic from WLAN efficiently, with guaranteed QoS and seamless mobility. We compare the handover procedures of the proposed coupling strategy with those of the loose and tight coupled schemes. In addition, we analyze the delay based on signaling costs during vertical handover. It is shown that the handover latency decreases when the UMTS and WLAN are coupled in the proposed way.  相似文献

Congestion control for IP multicast on the Internet has been one of the main issues that challenge a rapid deployment of IP multicast. In this article, we survey and discuss the most important congestion control schemes for multicast video applications on the Internet. We start with a discussion of the different elements of a multicast congestion control architecture. A congestion control scheme for multicast video possesses specific requirements for these elements. These requirements are discussed, along with the evaluation criteria for the performance of multicast video. We categorize the schemes we present into end-to-end schemes and router-supported schemes. We start with the end-to-end category and discuss several examples of both single-rate multicast applications and layered multicast applications. For the router-supported category, we first present single-rate schemes that utilize filtering of multicast packets by the routers. Next we discuss receiver-based layered schemes that rely on routers group?flow control of multicast sessions. We evaluate a number of schemes that belong to each of the two categories.  相似文献

TCP Vegas exhibits unfair congestion avoidance mechanism, which aggravates when there are insufficient network resources to accommodate buffer space of a pipe (bandwidth delay product). To remedy this shortcoming, we propose an Enhanced VegAs (EVA) that employs three auxiliary mechanisms: Δ revision, congestion detection and congestion tendency detection. A 2k factorial design with replications is used to study the effect of the three mechanisms. Our results show that TCP EVA achieves better performance than Vegas under various network conditions. Furthermore, congestion avoidance schemes, such as TCP EVA, perform much better than congestion control schemes, such as TCP Reno, in resource‐insufficient networks. 基于Internet的多媒体多播应用的迅猛发展对多播拥塞控制提出了要求.分层多播是适应网络异构性较有效的方案.针对现有分层多播存在的问题,将主动网技术思想引入到分层多播拥塞控制中,提出了一种逐跳TCP友好的主动分层多播拥塞控制方案(HTLMA),采用主动标记分层、逐跳探测TCP友好可用带宽,以及主动速率控制机制.仿真实验表明,HTLMA方案大大改进了分层多播拥塞控制的性能,具有较快的拥塞响应速度、较好的稳定性和TCP友好特性.  相似文献

The problem of providing an efficient and low-cost video streaming service over wireless access networks is considered in this work. In order to tackle the ??last mile?? bottleneck for video delivery to the home, we propose a content-aware architecture, that incorporates popularity-dependent video patching with application-enabled multicast content delivery. The key idea is to exploit the Broadcast/Multicast Service Center (BM-SC) in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks, by forwarding individual requests for popular data to the BM-SC, and then to serve these requests efficiently by multicast content distribution. The proposed method offers a tremendous bandwidth saving, in comparison with the MAC-enabled multicasting currently exists in wireless networks. We analyze the conditions under which multicast content delivery offers a better QoS, in terms of service delay, over the individual service currently used for video streaming.  相似文献

This paper discusses the problem of congestion in message-switched data communication networks. This condition occurs when more traffic enters a network than can reasonably be served. Two types of techniques employed to control congestion in already existing national networks are identified. A queueing model which can be used to analyze and compare these control schemes for a simple tandem link network is developed. Finally, analytic results are presented which describe the behavior of the simple network using the two control schemes, and which should be useful in the design of more general networks as well.  相似文献

Mobile telecommunication new services are based on data networks specially Internet. These services include http, telnet, ftp, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, etc. Besides, we recognize a mobile network as a multiuser network. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol which is sensitive to link congestion in wireline data links is also used in wireless networks. In order to improve the system performance, the TCP layer uses flow control and congestion control. Besides, radio link control (RLC) and medium access control sublayers have been introduced to compensate the deficiency of TCP layer in wireless environment. RLC has an important role in quality of service enhancement of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). In this paper, we review the protocol stack of UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network which is based on Third-Generation Partnership Project. Then, we evaluate its layer 2 error control mechanisms and verify TCP over automatic repeat request error control mechanism and finally quality of service improvement results from it in fading channels.  相似文献

This article provides an overview of the multimedia broadcast/multicast service (MBMS) for universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) networks. We first outline the features of UMTS networks as defined by the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) in order to provide a background for the discussion to follow. We then present the overall MBMS architecture, the services that it provides to the users and the differences between the broadcast and multicast options. The implementation details of MBMS are explained in terms of the modifications needed to the network, the new signaling procedures required and the impact of MBMS on the radio part of the network. We then describe how the security architecture of UMTS is used to support content protection and key distribution for MBMS groups. We evaluate the prospects of MBMS by comparing it first with IP multicast and then with DVB‐H, considered by many to be the closest competitor of MBMS. The Internet is increasingly used to deliver multimedia services. Since there are heterogeneous receivers and changing network conditions, it has been proposed to use adaptive rate control techniques such as layered video multicast to adjust the video traffic according to the available Internet resources. A problem of layered video multicast is that it is unable to provide fair bandwidth sharing between competing video sessions. We propose two schemes, layered video multicast with congestion sensitivity and adaptive join-timer (LVMCA) and layered video multicast with priority dropping (LVMPD), to achieve inter-session fairness for layered video multicast. Receiver-driven layered multicast (RLM), layer-based congestion sensitivity, LVMCA, and LVMPD are simulated and compared. Results show both proposed schemes, especially LVMPD, are fairer and have shorter convergence time than the other two schemes.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an efficient scheme for the multicast transmission of the data in the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). We take advantage of the tree topology of the examined network and we introduce the use of Routing Lists (RLs) in the nodes of the UMTS. The adoption of these lists leads to the decrement of the transmitted packets and to the efficient use of network resources in the multicast transmission of the data. We describe in detail the appropriate steps for the successful multicast transfer of data. Furthermore, we analyze the handling of special cases such as user mobility scenarios. Especially, the various handover types are examined along with the Serving Radio Network Subsystem relocation procedure. Finally, we implement our approach in the NS-2 simulator and we present the performance of the multicast mechanism.  相似文献
