In this paper, extend finite element method (XFEM) is used to predict the failure of single-lap bolted joints. To simplify calculation of XFEM model, composite laminates of joint are modeled using linear elastic properties. Three-dimensional equivalent material properties are calculated by the MATLAB code written by author. Progressive failure of bolted single-lap composite joint is investigated, and the failure load of joint simulated by XFEM is compared with experiments in literature. Then the influences of geometric parameters on failure load of one bolt single-lap composite joint are studied. Two geometric parameters include plate width-to-hole diameter ratio (W/D) and the edge-to-hole diameter ratio (E/D). At last the failure of single-lap joints with one bolt and two bolts are compared.

The increasing interest of the industry (especially automotive, aviation and marine) in the fastener joints (riveted, bolted, etc.) between metallic materials, has re-opened the study on the possibility to improve the performance of the drilled structure using plastic deformation processes.Indentation process, performed before the drilling operation, creates circumferential compression stresses around the hole which increase significantly the mechanical performance of the drilled structures. In this paper, static and the fatigue performances of aluminum–aluminum (AW 6082-T6) single-lap bolted joints are studied. In particular, the study compares the mechanical strength of only drilled single-lap bolted joints (OD specimens) and single-lap bolted joints subject to an indentation process (IP specimens). In order to determine the cycles to failure and the corresponding Wöhler diagram, several fatigue tests are performed. The analyses allow to determine the mechanical performance and the failure mode of the analyzed joints.Several numerical analysis, conducted in ANSYS environment on three-dimensional models of the single-lap joint, are focused on the evaluation of the residual stress on the indented plate and, in particular, to compare the stress distribution on both type of analyzed joints.

This work aims at determining whether thermoplastic-based composites can be used in secondary aircraft structures to replace thermosetting-based composites or not. In order to answer this question, the mechanical behaviors of carbon fiber fabric reinforced thermoplastic (PPS or PEEK) and thermosetting (epoxy) laminates subjected to different stress states under severe environmental conditions (120 °C after hygrothermal aging) have been compared. In addition to usual mechanical tests (tensile, open hole tensile), single-bolt double lap joint and single-bolt single lap joint tests were also performed. Severe conditions help enhance the ductile behavior of the epoxy matrix, but degrade the fiber/matrix interface, resulting in lower stiffness and strength of laminates with a quasi-isotropic lay-up. In thermoplastic-based laminates, the degree of retention of mechanical properties is quite high even for PPS-based laminates when T > Tg. In laminates with a [45]7 lay-up, severe conditions adversely affect the mechanical properties of the three composite systems. However, the combination of matrix ductile behavior, and the strain gradient near the hole, lead to an extensive plastic deformation along the ±45° oriented fibers bundles in notched A-P laminates. It results in decreasing significantly the hole-sensitivity of C/PPS and C/Epoxy under severe conditions. In bolted joints, a severe environment has a limited impact on the bearing strength of epoxy-based laminates. In the case of thermoplastic-based laminates, it increases the strength of double lap joints, but is detrimental to the strength of single lap joints.

There is increasing use of natural fiber/polymer composites as alternatives to traditional structural materials like concrete and metals and to the inorganic fibers like carbon. While the fracture mechanisms during crushing of synthetic fiber/polymer composites have been thoroughly studied, limited information is available on post-fracture investigation and identification of the dominant fracture mechanisms of wood/polyester composites. In this study laminates of Douglas-fir veneer were fabricated using a catalyzed polyester resin and their potentials as energy absorbers have been investigated and discussed. Factors for this study were (i) laminates symmetry (face layers of 0° or 90°), (ii) lay-up balance (balanced and unbalanced) and (iii) number of lamina (8, 11, and 12). Samples were tested under quasi-static Combined Loading Compression (CLC) and their compressive performances were compared to control specimens using glass fiber as reinforcement. Results indicated that the effect of symmetry on compressive properties of wood veneer/polyester laminates was significant with laminates with face layers of 90° and core layers of 0° had the highest deflection to failure. Increasing the wood/polyester laminate thickness enhanced their energy absorbing ability by bringing more fracture mechanisms into play but it noticeably reduced the laminates compressive modulus. Despite the brittle failure of glass fiber composites wood laminates exhibited a progressive fracture mechanisms with shear buckling as the dominant mode of failure in symmetric samples. This progressive failure with high energy absorbing ability make wood/polyester laminates a good candidate to be used as an energy absorber structure where high deflection to failure and longer failure time are required.

Local buckling of stitched composite laminate
Due to relatively low interlaminar strength, delamination is a common failure mode of composite laminates. Through-thickness stitching is shown to improve the delamination resistance of laminated composites. Under in-plane compressive loading, significant strength reduction occurs due to coupling between delamination and delamination buckling. In this paper, an energy-based model was developed to predict the effect of critical stitching parameters on the delamination buckling strength of stitched laminates. Excellent agreement was found between the model results and a corresponding finite element analysis.

A semi-analytical solution method is developed for stress analysis of single-lap hybrid (bolted/bonded) joints of composite laminates under in-plane as well as lateral loading. The laminate and bolt displacements are based on the Mindlin and Timoshenko beam theories, respectively. For the adhesive, the displacement field is expressed in terms of those of laminates by using the shear-lag model. The derivation of the governing equations of equilibrium of the joint is based on the virtual work principle, where the kinematics of each laminate are approximated by local and global functions and the bolt kinematics is assumed in terms of cubic Hermitian polynomials. The capability of the present approach is justified by validation and demonstration problems, including the analysis of bolted and bonded joints and hybrid joints with and without considering a disbond between the adhesive and laminates.

Multiple delamination causes severe degradation of the stiffness and strength of composites. Interactions between multiple delamination, and buckling and postbuckling under compressive loads add the complexity of mechanical properties of composites. In this paper, the buckling, postbuckling and through-the-width multiple delamination of symmetric and unsymmetric composite laminates are studied using 3D FEA, and the virtual crack closure technique with two delamination failure criteria: B-K law and power law is used to predict the delamination growth and to calculate the mixed-mode energy release rate. The compressive load-strain curves, load-central deflection curves and multiple delamination process for eight composite specimens with different initial delamination sizes and their distributions as well as two angle-ply configurations 04//(±θ)6//04 (θ?=?0° and 45°, and “//” denotes the delaminated interface) are comparatively studied. From numerical results, the unsymmetry decreases the local buckling load and initial delamination load, but does not affect the global buckling load compared with the symmetric laminates. Besides, the unsymmetry affects the unstable delamination and buckling behaviors of composite laminates largely when the initial multiple delamination sizes are relatively small.

Aluminum alloys have been utilized in various industrial fields and building structures due to high strength-to-weight ratio, increased durability, formability and enhanced service life. They can be classified into seven groups from 1000 to 7000 series according to alloyed chemical compositions except main pure aluminum component. Experiments of single-lap joints with 6061 type alloys were performed by Kim et al. and the results show that curling (out-of-plane deformation toward plate thickness direction) occurred in bolted joints with a long end distance and it is found that the curling influenced mechanical strength. In this paper, ultimate strength and failure mechanism of single shear sheet bolted joints fabricated with two different aluminum alloys; 6061-T6 (aluminum–magnesium–silicon series) and 7075-T6 (aluminum–zinc–magnesium–copper series), which are the most widely used materials due to the need of high strength were compared. Alloy type, plate thickness, end distance and bolt arrangement were considered as main variables. Monotonic tensile tests have been conducted for specimens and two fracture modes such as shear fracture and block shear fracture were observed. Some bolted joints with relatively thinner plate and longer end distance were accompanied by curling and the curling led to sudden strength reduction. The difference of material properties and plate thickness affected failure mechanism and curling occurrence. Moreover, strain distribution and curling deformation pattern against enforced displacement were investigated to grasp the curling effect on the behaviors of joints.

This paper presents the development of an analytical model for replicating the through-thickness stiffness of single-bolt, single-lap composite joints subjected to secondary bending. The model is an extension of a spring-based method, where bolts and laminates are represented by a series of springs and masses. The model accounts for extension of the bolt, the stiffness of the clamped region of the joint due to bolt torque, as well as the flexural stiffness and anticlastic curvature within the laminates. In order capture bolt extension and the stiffness of the clamped region, a closed form approach is used. An approximation approach is used to model flexural stiffness and anticlastic curvature within the laminates. The method is validated against detailed three-dimensional finite element models of bolted composite plates and good agreement was obtained. The method is subsequently employed to calibrate the through-thickness stiffness of single-bolt, single-lap joints in highly-efficient numerical models.

Experimental behaviour of bolted joints in triaxial braided (0°/±45°) carbon fibre/epoxy composite laminates with drilled and moulded-in fastener holes has been investigated in this paper. Braided laminates were manufactured by vacuum infusion process using 12 K T700S carbon fibres (for bias and axial tows) and Araldite LY-564 epoxy resin. Moulded-in fastener holes were formed using guide pins which were inserted in the braided structure prior to the vacuum infusion process. The damage mechanism of the specimens was investigated using ultrasonic C-Scan technique. The specimens were dimensioned to obtain a bearing mode of failure. The bearing strength of the specimens with moulded-in hole was reduced in comparison to the specimens with drilled hole, due to the increased fibre misalignment angle following the pin insertion procedure. An improvement on the bearing strength of moulded-in hole specimens might be developed if the specimen dimensions would be prepared for a net-tension mode of failure where the fibre misalignment would not have an effect as significant as in the case of bearing failure mode, but this mode should be avoided since it leads to sudden catastrophic failures.

A detailed experimental programme is presented that was conducted in order to establish a data base for strength and subcritical damage mechanisms of bolted joints in CFRP composite laminates. Single fastener double-shear tensile tests for various joint geometries were performed for a range of cross-ply and quasi-isotropic lay-ups of HTS40/977-2 CFRP material system. Penetrant enhanced X-ray radiography was used to define the subcritical damage locations which are of great importance when modelling the failure response of the joints. It is suggested that the subcritical damage planes can be modelled using cohesive zone elements (CZEs) in order to develop physically based strength prediction methods for bolted joints in CFRP laminates.

Edge delamination is frequently observed in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates after machining, due to the low fracture toughness of the resin interfaces between carbon fiber plies. In this study, the effects of incorporating tough aramid fibers into the brittle CFRP system are quantified by measuring the residual properties of bolted CFRP. By adding short-aramid-fiber interleaves in CFRP laminates, the residual tensile strength have been substantially increased by 14 % for twill-weave laminates and 45 % for unidirectional laminates respectively. Moreover, tensile failure was observed as the major mode of toughened laminates, in contrast to shear failure of plain laminates. The qualitative FEM results agreed well with the experimental results that edge delamination would cause relatively higher shear stress and therefore alter the failure mode from tensile failure to shear failure.

Strength improvement by fibre steering around a pin loaded hole
A fibre steering technique has been applied around boltholes in carbon fibre reinforced epoxy composite laminates to locally enhance the bearing strength of bolted joints. The procedure can precisely place dry tows of fibre on a prepreg fabric following both the tensile and compressive principal stress trajectories around the hole. The bearing test results indicate that fibre steering improved the peak load of the composite bolted joints approximately in linear proportion to fibre addition by weight. The best result achieved an increase for the peak load by a factor of 2.69. The best improvement of bearing strength was by a factor of 1.36 for a specimen reinforced by 3 k fibre tows in tensile principal stress patterns and 6 k fibre tows in compressive principal stress patterns. The bearing strength improved due to significant increase in peak load and moderate change in thickness.

Experimental and computational studies of the microscale mechanisms of damage formation and evolution in unidirectional glass fiber reinforced polymer composites (GFRP) under axial and off-axis compressive loading are carried out. A series of compressive testing of the composites with different angles between the loading vector and fiber direction were carried out under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in situ observation. The damage mechanisms as well as stress strain curves were obtained in the experiments. It was shown that the compressive strength of composites drastically reduces when the angle between the fiber direction and the loading vector goes from 0° to 45° (by 2.3–2.6 times), and then slightly increases (when the angle approaches 80–90°). At the low angles between the fiber and the loading vector, fiber buckling and kinking are the main mechanisms of fiber failure. With increasing the angle between the fiber and applied loading, failure of glass fibers is mainly controlled by shear cracking. For the computational analysis of the damage mechanisms, 3D multifiber unit cell models of GFRP composites and X-FEM approach to the fracture modeling were used. The computational results correspond well to the experimental observations.

A new design of single-lap shear specimen for determining the effect of loading rate on the interlaminar shear strength of laminated composites is described. Finite element analyses are used to optimize the specimen geometry and minimize the variation in the shear stress and the magnitude of the normal stress along the interlaminar failure plane. Experimental results are obtained at a quasi-static and an impact rate of loading for the interlaminar shear strength parallel to the fibres in both unidirectional carbon/epoxy and unidirectional carbon/polyetheretherketone (peek) laminates and at interfaces across which the fibre orientation is 0°/90° and ±45°. Results for carbon/epoxy laminates are compared with those from an earlier investigation using a double-lap specimen geometry and show a similar small dependence on loading rate. No significant effect of loading rate was observed for the carbon/peek laminates.

An experimental investigation is conducted into the damage progression and strength of bolted joints with fibre-reinforced composite laminates and countersunk fasteners. The main goal of the experimental investigation is to characterise the effect of the countersink geometry on the load-carrying capacity of single lap joints in comparison to the straight-shank case. The effects of bolt torque, clearance and countersink height ratio on the damage progression and joint strength are also studied. Experimental tests and detailed microscopy studies are conducted on a bearing test specimen with a straight-edged hole, and several single-lap joint configurations with countersunk fasteners. It is found that introduction of the countersunk hole roughly halves the bearing stress, and causes delamination for some configurations. This delamination is primarily located at the start of the countersink region, though is found to be triggered by other damage mechanisms and has only minor influence on the results. Bolt torque increases the density of through-thickness damage though limits its extension from the hole edge, whilst bolt clearance causes localisation of the damage region. Increasing the ratio of the countersink depth to the laminate thickness reduces the extent of bearing and promotes bending, with a change to net section failure at large ratios.
