The compressive properties of epoxy with different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) contents at quasi-static and high strain rates loading had been investigated via experiment to evaluate the compressive failure behaviors and modes at different CNTs contents and different strain rates. The results indicated that the stress train curves were strain rate sensitive, and the compressive stiffness, compressive failure stress of composites with various CNTs contents was increased with the strain rates and CNTs contents. The compressive failure stress and the compressive failure modes of the composites were apparently different as the change of CNTs contents.  相似文献

Epoxy resins often exhibit high strength yet are often brittle, especially at high strain rates. Block copolymer modified epoxy resins have generated significant interest since it was demonstrated that the combination could lead to nanostructured thermosets through the self-assembly of the block copolymer. Such nanostructured epoxies exhibit increased ductility without the significant loss in yield strength exhibited by traditional rubber-modified epoxies. In this study, the effect of different nanoscale additives on the compressive yield strength of a model epoxy resin has been studied. In the first case, a block copolymer styrene-b-butadiene-b-polymethylmethacrylate (SBM) was added to the model epoxy resin. In the second case, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added. In the final case, both additives were mixed simultaneously with the epoxy resin. The compressive mechanical behavior of these materials has been investigated over a wide range of strain rates (0.001–3500 s−1). The yield behavior was found to fit the cooperative yield model proposed by Fotheringham and Cherry.  相似文献

Nickel-Pitch-based carbon fibres (Ni-PFs) were prepared by electroless nickel-plating to enhance fracture toughness of Ni-PFs reinforced epoxy matrix composites (Ni-PFs/epoxy). The surface properties of Ni-PFs were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The fracture toughness of the Ni-PFs/epoxy was assessed by critical stress intensity factor (KIC) and critical strain energy release rate (GIC). The fracture toughness of Ni-PFs/epoxy was enhanced compared to those of PFs/epoxy. These results were attributed to the increase of the degree of adhesion at interfaces between Ni-PFs and matrix resins in the composites.  相似文献

We investigate dynamic fracture of three types of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composites and neat epoxy under high strain-rate loading (105106 s−1). The composites include randomly dispersed, 1 wt%, functionalized and pristine CNT/epoxy composites, as well as laminated, ∼50 wt% CNT buckypaper/epoxy composites. The pristine and functionalized CNT composites demonstrate spall strength and fracture toughness slightly higher and lower than that of neat epoxy, respectively, and the spall strength of laminated CNT buckypaper/epoxy composites is considerably lower; both types of CNTs reduce the extent of damage. Pullout, sliding and immediate fracture modes are observed; the fracture mechanisms depend on the CNT–epoxy interface strength and fiber strength, and other microstructures such as the interface between CNT laminates. Compared to the functionalized CNT composites, weaker CNT–epoxy interface strength and higher fiber strength lead to a higher probability of sliding fracture and higher tensile strength in the pristine CNT composites at high strain rates. On the contrary, sliding fracture is more pronounced in the functionalized CNT composites under quasistatic loading, a manifestation of a loading-rate effect on fracture modes. Despite their helpful sliding fracture mode and large CNT content, the weak laminate–laminate interfaces play a detrimental role in fracture of the laminated CNT buckypaper/epoxy composites. Regardless of materials, increasing strain rates leads to pronounced rise in tensile strength and fracture toughness.  相似文献

The transverse tensile properties, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fibre/epoxy (CF/EP) laminates with 10 wt% and 20 wt% silica nanoparticles in matrix were investigated, and the influences of silica nanoparticle on those properties of CF/EP laminates were characterized. The transverse tensile properties and mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIC) increased with an increase in nanosilica concentration in the matrix resins. However, ILSS and the mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) decreased with increasing nanosilica concentration, especially for the higher nanosilica concentration (20 wt%). The reduced GIIC value is attributed to two main competing mechanisms; one is the formation of zipper-like pattern associated with matrix microcracks aligned 45° ahead of the crack tip, while the other is the shear failure of matrix. The ratio of GIIC/GIC decreased with the concentration of silica nanoparticles, comparable with similar CF/EP laminates with dispersed CNTs in matrix. Fractographic studies showed that interfacial failure between carbon fibre and epoxy resin occurred in the neat epoxy laminate, whereas a combination of interfacial failure and matrix failure occurred in the nanosilica-modified epoxy laminates, especially those with a higher nanosilica concentration (20 wt%).  相似文献

Cryogenic mechanical properties are important parameters for epoxy resins used in cryogenic engineering areas. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were employed to reinforce diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGBEF)/diethyl toluene diamine (DETD) epoxy system modified by poly(ethersulfone) (PES) for enhancing the cryogenic mechanical properties. The epoxy system was properly modified by PES in our previous work and the optimized formulation of the epoxy system was reinforced by MWCNTs in the present work. The results show that the tensile strength and Young’s modulus at 77 K were enhanced by 57.9% and 10.1%, respectively. The reported decrease in the previous work of the Young’s modulus of the modified epoxy system due to the introduction of flexible PES is offset by the increase of the modulus due to the introduction of MWCNTs. Meanwhile, the fracture toughness (KIC) at 77 K was improved by about 13.5% compared to that of the PES modified epoxy matrix when the 0.5 wt.% MWCNT content was introduced. These interesting results imply that the simultaneous usage of PES and MWCNTs in a brittle epoxy resin is a promising approach for efficiently modifying and reinforcing epoxy resins for cryogenic engineering applications.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated into polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrices via in situ emulsion and emulsion/suspension polymerization methods. The polymerizations were carried out using various initiators, surfactants, and carbon nanotubes to determine their influence on polymerization and on the properties of the composites. The loading of CNTs in the composites varied from 0 to 15 wt.%, depending on the CNTs used. Morphology and dispersion of the CNTs were analyzed by transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in the composites was excellent, even at high CNT loading. The mechanical properties, and electrical and thermal conductivities, of the composites were also analyzed. Both electrical and thermal conductivities were improved.  相似文献

Surface reactive P(St-co-GMA) copolymer and P(St-co-GMA)/MWCNT fibrous mats are placed onto a conventional carbon fiber/epoxy prepreg as interlayer reinforcing material. Experimental observations are used to demonstrate excellent epoxy wetting and structural compatibility of the interlayers chemically tuned for the epoxy matrix. Comparisons of increase in mechanical performance by incorporating P(St-co-GMA) and P(St-co-GMA)/MWCNT interlayers also show the contribution of MWCNT presence in the copolymer nanofibers. Flexural strength and stiffness of (0/0/0) and (90/0/90) laminates increase up to 17% when the nanocomposite interlayers are integrated. Cross-sectional SEM analyses of the failure surfaces suggest reinforcing ability of interlayers both against transverse cracking and delamination. Further examination for the delamination resistance is presented by the End Notched Flexure (ENF) tests. An improvement up to 70% in mode II strain energy release rate (GIIc) is recorded for the laminates with nanocomposite interlayers. The resistance against transverse matrix cracking in the presence of interlayers is also elaborated. Charpy-impact and transverse-tension tests result in up to 20% and 27% increase in the impact energy absorbance and transverse tensile strength, respectively. Overall, the test results suggest that mechanical behavior of the laminates is enhanced by the nanofibrous interlayers chemically-tuned for epoxy crosslinking, with no weight penalty.  相似文献

Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) [PTT]/multiwalled carbon nanotube [MWCNT] composites having varying amounts of MWCNTs were fabricated with an aim to investigate the potential of such composites as an effective light weight electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material in the frequency range of 12.4-18 GHz (Ku-band). PTT/MWCNT composite with shielding effectiveness (SE) of 36-42 dB was obtained at 10% (w/w) MWCNT loading. Shielding mechanism was studied by resolving the total SE into absorption (SEA) and reflection loss (SER). PTT/MWCNT composite showed absorption dominated shielding; thus it can be used as microwave, radar absorbing and stealth material. The effect of MWCNT loadings on electrical conductivity (σ) and dielectric properties of PTT and the correlation among conductivity, tan δ, absorption loss and reflection loss were also studied.  相似文献

The resistive behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy resins, tested under mechanical cycles and different levels of applied strain, was investigated for specimens loaded in axial tension. The surface normalized resistivity is linear with the strain for volume fraction of MWCNTs between 2.96 × 10−4 and 2.97 × 10−3 (0.05 and 0.5% wt/wt). For values lower than 0.05% wt/wt, close to the electrical percolation threshold (EPT) a non-linear behavior was observed. The strain sensitivity, in the range between 0.67 and 4.45, may be specifically modified by controlling the nanotube loading, in fact the sensor sensitivity decreases with increasing the carbon nanotubes amount. Microscale damages resulted directly related to the resistance changes and hence easily detectable in a non-destructive way by means of electrical measurements. In the fatigue tests, the damage is expressed through the presence of a residual resistivity, which increases with the amount of plastic strain accumulated in the matrix.  相似文献

Mats of vertically-aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes were grown in an thermal CVD reactor with simultaneous feed of the catalyst and carbon precursors. Mats were soaked into epoxy resin solutions without any prior chemical modification and then cured to produce composite plates of z-axis nano-reinforcement. Direct observations of the epoxy–CNT interactions at the nanoscale revealed that epoxy interacted naturally with the MWCNTs without affecting their physical characteristics, alignment, or the mat’s morphology. The compressive behavior of the pristine and composite mats was consistent with mechanical predictions accounting for an elastic regime followed by elastic instability and compaction. Strong evidence of reinforcement in the MWCNT/epoxy composites was indicated by increased strength, stiffness and toughness values with respect to the as-grown mats and pure polymer. The elastic instability strain of the composites was of the order of 0.4.  相似文献

Investigations are carried out on the behavior of typical plain weave E-glass/epoxy; plain weave carbon/epoxy; satin weave carbon/epoxy; and satin weave carbon – plain weave E-glass and epoxy hybrid composites under high strain rate compressive loading along thickness direction. Compressive split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus was used for the studies. Two loading cases, namely, specimen not failed and specimen failed during loading are investigated. The special characteristics of specimen not failed case are presented. For this case, the specimens are under compressive strain initially and are under tensile strain during the later part of loading. The induced tensile strain is higher than the induced compressive strain. This could lead to failure of specimen/structure under tensile strain even though the applied load is compressive.  相似文献

The self sensing properties of cementitious composites reinforced with well dispersed carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers were investigated. The electrical resistance of cementitious nanocomposites with w/c = 0.3 reinforced with well dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanofibers (CNFs) at an amount of 0.1 wt% and 0.3 wt% of cement was experimentally determined and compared with resistivity results of nanocomposites fabricated with “as received” nanoscale fibers at the same loading. Results indicate that conductivity measurements, besides being a valuable tool in evaluating the smart properties of the nanocomposites, may provide a good correlation between the resistivity values measured and the degree of dispersion of the material in the matrix. The addition of CNTs and CNFs at different loadings was proven to induce a decrease in electrical resistance, with the nanocomposites containing 0.1 wt% CNTs yielding better electrical properties. Furthermore, conductivity measurements under cyclic compressive loading provided an insight in the piezoresistive properties of selected nanocomposites. Results confirm that nanocomposites, reinforced with 0.1 wt% CNTs and CNFs, exhibited an increased change in resistivity, which is indicative of the amplified sensitivity of the material in strain sensing.  相似文献

In this study, we investigate how multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) affect the in-plane shear mechanical behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composite. These multi-scale composites are fabricated using vacuum infusion: pristine MWCNT and amino-functionalized MWCNT are incorporated into epoxy resins at concentrations of both 0.1 and 0.3 wt.% and are subsequently evaluated. The MWCNT are mixed into the resins by mechanical stirring and sonication prior to resin infusion, and the MWCNT distribution in the cured laminate is then evaluated by performing a heat conduction assessment. Monotonic and cyclic quasi-static room temperature in-plane shear tests are performed following the ASTM D 4255 standard. The initial shear modulus, the deterioration of the shear modulus during plastic deformation and material hardening are evaluated. Incorporating MWCNT into the resins did not affect the parameters investigated under the imposed conditions.  相似文献

Failure of composite laminates is often the result of “secondary” transverse stresses causing delamination. One well known approach to prevent such failure is to incorporate a distinct interleaf material into the interlaminar region in order to increase its fracture toughness and, consequently, its resistance to delamination. In the recent years various carbon nanotube (CNT) interleaves gained much attention. This work presents experimental study of the Mode I progressive fracture of carbon/epoxy composite laminates modified with high volume fraction, aligned, non-functionalized and functionalized CNT interleaves. The interleaves used here are thin solid sheets produced from vertically grown multiwalled CNT arrays by shear pressing method. A dry or resin infused sheet is integrated between prepreg plies prior to the laminate cure. The obtained results show that both dry and pre-infused CNT interleaves significantly, up to two times, increase the critical strain energy release rate of the baseline non-interleaved laminate. Two methods of functionalizing CNTs within the preform are explored: O2/CF4 plasma and H2SO4/KnO4 wet chemical treatments. Both methods maintain the high alignment and aspect ratio of the CNTs. Although, functionalization results in no additional GIC toughening compared to the non-functionalized interleaves, the characteristics of the fracture surfaces are dramatically different.  相似文献

In this work multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in a polymer matrix have been used for strain sensing of the resulting nanocomposite under tensile loading. This was achieved by measuring the relative electrical resistance change (ΔR/R0) in conductive polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF)/MWCNTs nanocomposites prepared by melt-mixing with varying filler content from 0.5 wt.% to 8 wt.%. Two main parameters were systematically studied. The PVDF/MWCNTs mixing procedure that results in a successful MWCNTs dispersion, and the effect of MWCNTs content on material’s sensing behaviour. The samples were subjected to tensile loading and the longitudinal strain was monitored together with the longitudinal electrical resistance. The results showed that MWCNTs dispersed in insulating PVDF matrix have the potential to be used as a sensitive network to monitor the strain levels in polymer/carbon nanotube nanocomposites as the deformation level of each sample was being reflected by the resistance changes.  相似文献

Nano/micrometer hybrids are prepared by chemical vapor deposition growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on SiC, Al2O3 and graphene nanoplatelet (GNP). The mechanical and self-sensing behaviors of the hybrids reinforced epoxy composites are found to be highly dependent on CNT aspect ratio (AR), organization and substrates. The CNT–GNP hybrids exhibit the most significant reinforcing effectiveness, among the three hybrids with AR1200. During tensile loading, the in situ electrical resistance of the CNT–GNP/epoxy and the CNT–SiC/epoxy composites gradually increases to a maximum value and then decreases, which is remarkably different from the monotonic increase in the CNT–Al2O3/epoxy composites. However, the CNT–Al2O3 with increased AR  2000 endows the similar resistance change as the other two hybrids. Besides, when AR < 3200, the tensile modulus and strength of the CNT–Al2O3/epoxy composites gradually increase with AR. The interrelationship between the hybrid structure and the mechanical and self-sensing behaviors of the composites are analyzed.  相似文献

The versatile electrospinning technique was used to successfully align and disperse multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in nylon 6,6 matrix to obtain composite fibers. The morphology of the composite fibers and the dispersion of the CNTs within the fibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. TEM analysis revealed that the CNTs were well-dispersed, separated and aligned along the fiber axis. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composite fibers were characterized as a function of weight fraction of the CNTs. Incorporation of the CNTs in the fibers resulted in an increase in glass-transition temperature (Tg) by ∼7 °C, indicating that the addition of CNTs has restricted the mobility of the polymer chains and provided confinement to neighboring molecular chains. Tensile and nanoindentation experiments were performed to investigate the mechanical deformation behavior of the composite fibers. The results suggested that incorporation of high strength and high aspect ratio CNTs into the fiber matrix enhanced significantly the stiffness and strength of nylon 6,6 fibers. An understanding of the structure–property relationships can provide fruitful insights to develop electrospun fibers with superior properties for miniaturized and load-bearing applications.  相似文献

The development of a hierarchically engineered micro-nano hybrid composite system is described. A spray coating technique has been utilized as an effective way to deposit carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto carbon fibre prepregs with good control of network formation and the potential for localization. Compared to more traditional approaches of introducing CNTs into epoxy matrices for enhancing composite properties, this technique has benefits in terms of its simplicity and versatility, as well as the potential for industrial scale-up. The effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated by the extremely low CNT loading (0.047 wt.%) needed to significantly increase the Mode-I fracture toughness of the carbon fibre laminates by about 50%, which is so far the largest reported improvement for such extremely low concentrations of non-functionalized CNTs. In-situ damage sensing has also been presented for the monitoring of structural health of these nano-engineered composite laminates upon loading, and a systematic analysis of sensing signals is performed.  相似文献

Tough polycarbonate (PC)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites (NCs) modified by a maleated styrene/ethylene–butylene/styrene (mSEBS) rubber were obtained in the melt state using a highly dispersed PC/MWCNT master-batch. An electrical percolation threshold (pc) occurred at only 0.5% MWCNT showing a power law critical exponent of 2.60, which is characteristic of a three-dimensional percolated structure. The presence of MWCNT decreased the rubber particle size due to an increase in matrix viscosity. In addition to high electrical conductivity, the elastic modulus of the NCs was similar to that of the PC, as a result of the combined presence of 0.5% MWCNT and 4% mSEBS; the mSEBS was also able to provide (i) considerable impact strength, (ii) clear ductile behavior and (iii) increased resistance against crack propagation.  相似文献
