A diode-laser-based sensor has been developed to measure nitric oxide mole fractions using absorption spectroscopy. The sensor is based on sum-frequency mixing of a 395 nm external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) and a 532 nm laser in a beta-barium-borate crystal. Using a new tuning scheme, the GaN ECDL wavelength was modulated over 90 GHz without mode hops. The sensor was applied for measurements of the NO mole fraction in the exhaust of a laboratory-scale, 30 kW(t) coal-fired boiler burner. Absorption measurements were successfully performed despite severe attenuation by scattering from ash particles in the exhaust stream and on the exhaust-section windows. A detection limit (1sigma) of 4.5 ppm m/(square root)Hz at 700 K was demonstrated in coal- combustion exhaust at a maximum detection rate of 5 Hz.  相似文献

We investigate experimentally the influence of the grating reflectivity, grating resolution, and diode facet antireflection (AR) coating on the intrinsic linewidth of an external-cavity diode laser built with a diffraction grating in a Littrow configuration. Grating lasers at 399, 780, and 852 nm are determined to have typical linewidths between 250 and 600 kHz from measurements of their frequency noise power spectral densities. The linewidths are little affected by the presence of an AR coating on the diode facet but narrow as the grating reflectivity and grating resolution are increased, with the resolution exerting a greater effect. We also use frequency noise measurements to characterize a laser mount with improved mechanical stability.  相似文献

A novel C-band external-cavity wavelength-tunable laser is proposed. The laser consists of a semiconductor gain chip, a collimating lens, a fixed etalon, a liquid-crystal deflector and a diffraction grating in a Littrow configuration. The lasing wavelength of this tunable external-cavity laser can be tuned to 19 wavelength channels of 100 GHz spacing. All channels are within 2.5 GHz of the ITU grids with a side-mode suppression ratio of approximately 35 dB over the whole range.  相似文献

We report on a widely tunable, diode-pumped, continuous-wave, single-frequency Cr(3+):LiSrAlF(6) laser with a novel double-ring cavity configuration. The optical diode and the tuning element were located in the ring subcavity to decrease their insertion loss. Using an 1800-lines/mm grating as the tuning element, we obtained a laser emission of 20-mW output power at 870 nm and a tuning range of from 800 to 936 nm. When we used a 1200-lines/mm grating with a higher diffraction efficiency, the laser had a slightly wider tuning range of from 800 to 938 nm. However, the output power decreased at this tuning range.  相似文献

A near-IR tunable external-cavity laser that uses an electro-optic deflector and a reflection grating as a tunable filter is demonstrated. The deflector is an electronically reconfigurable nonpixelated nematic liquid-crystal device. By controlling the voltage applied to the electro-optic deflector, a tuning range of 12 nm and a side-mode suppression higher than 30 dB are obtained.  相似文献

An external-cavity diode laser operating at 1500 nm was used to record the combination band of acetylene (C(2)H(2)). By combination of wavelength-modulation spectroscopy with a noise-canceler detection circuit, a minimum detectable absorbance of 4.8 × 10(-4) with a 300-ms time constant was achieved, although this result was limited by étalon fringes. When combined with this detection technique, continuous, widely tunable output from an external-cavity laser is ideally suited for high-resolution absorption spectroscopy with excellent sensitivity.  相似文献

An external-cavity diode laser is used to seed a pulsed Ti:sapphire laser from 839 to 860 nm. Because this wavelength range is off the gain peak of Ti:sapphire, a bandpass filter is used in the cavity to permit seeded operation. We describe a tunable, wide-field-of-view birefringent filter especially suited for use in seeded lasers. Measurements of the ratio of unseeded to seeded output as a function of seed power are also presented and demonstrate an approximately reciprocal dependence on the seed power.  相似文献

We report on a method for characterizing the tuning capabilities of small-bandwidth external-cavity diode lasers. The step response of a piezo-driven Littman-Metcalf external-cavity diode laser and the compensation of its optoelectromechanical frequency response is investigated. When an approximately 50-V compensated Gaussian pulse is applied to the piezo element, a detuning of 13.6 GHz is observed. This modification of the laser is useful for several spectroscopical applications and as a tunable seed laser for lidar applications.  相似文献

The continuous tuning range of an external-cavity diode laser can be extended by making small corrections to the external-cavity length through an electronic feedback loop so that the cavity resonance condition is maintained as the laser wavelength is tuned. By maintaining the cavity resonance condition as the laser is tuned, the mode hops that typically limit the continuous tuning range of the external-cavity diode laser are eliminated. We present the design of a simple external-cavity diode laser based on the Littman-Metcalf external-cavity configuration that has a measured continuous tuning range of 1 GHz without an electronic feedback loop. To include the electronic feedback loop, a small sinusoidal signal is added to the drive current of the laser diode creating a small oscillation of the laser power. By comparing the phase of the modulated optical power with the phase of the sinusoidal drive signal using a lock-in amplifier, an error signal is created and used in an electronic feedback loop to control the external-cavity length. With electronic feedback, we find that the continuous tuning range can be extended to over 65 GHz. This occurs because the electronic feedback maintains the cavity resonance condition as the laser is tuned. An experimental demonstration of this extended tuning range is presented in which the external-cavity diode laser is tuned through an absorption feature of diatomic oxygen near 760 nm.  相似文献

Applications requiring long-range atmospheric propagation are driving the development of high-power thulium fiber lasers. We report on the performance of two different laser configurations for high-power tunable thulium fiber lasers: one is a single oscillator utilizing a volume Bragg grating for wavelength stabilization; the other is a master oscillator power amplifier system with the oscillator stabilized and made tunable by a diffraction grating. Each configuration provides >150 W of average power, >50% slope efficiency, narrow output linewidth, and >100 nm tunability in the wavelength range around 2 μm.  相似文献

Comparative operating characteristics of external-cavity diode lasers (ECDL's) with either a channel substrate planar device or a multi-quantum-well (MQW) device are presented. These include the output beam profile, which is significantly altered depending on the collimating lens used (either multielement or graded index), power versus injection-current characteristics, and the optical frequency and the rf spectra. The coherence lengths of the different laser diode-collimating-lens combinations in the ECDL are measured, and a new method for calculating the coupling coefficient and the coupled values of the internal quantum efficiency and the internal lumped loss is demonstrated for the MQW device.  相似文献

Near-IR and visible room-temperature diode lasers in broadly tunable external-cavity configurations are becoming commercially available for gas-sensing applications. Near 1.57 mum, a coincidence of overtone and combination-band transitions from CO, CO(2), OH, and H(2)O is particularly interesting for combustion and combustor emissions monitoring. Abstract

We demonstrate the use of the Zeeman effect in Cs vapour to stabilize an ultra-compact extended cavity diode laser (ECDL) operating at 852 nm. We investigate the expected laser stabilization error signal for a range of magnetic fields and are able to tune the locked ECDL by variation of the magnetic field. We also study in detail the tuning of the laser frequency using optical methods. The ECDL has a linewidth of 520kHz and the drift, when locked, is of the order of 5 MHzh?1.  相似文献

Abstract

A diffractive optical element (DOE) has been designed, fabricated and used in an external feedback configuration to set the wavelength of operation of uncoated Fabry-Pérot diode lasers. The DOE was designed to replace the conventional elements of an external feedback system, which are a collimating lens and grating in the Littrow configuration. The goal was to simplify use of the external cavity laser by replacing the lens and grating with a single optical element while maintaining the performance that is achieved with a grating and lens. Four DOEs were fabricated with two different focal lengths and two different reflectivities. DOE external cavity lasers were tested for maximum tunable range and stability of the wavelength of operation and compared with an external cavity laser based on a lens and grating in the Littrow configuration. A 40 nm tuning range was achieved with the DOE external cavity laser and this is comparable with the tuning range of the external cavity lasers based on a grating and collimating lens in the Littrow configuration.  相似文献

We have constructed a compact extended-cavity diode laser (ECDL) that is based on a Littman configuration with a grating and a reflector. The whole structure is installed in a 2-inch kinematic mount. ECDLs operating at 852 nm (Cs D/sub 2/ line), 894 nm (Cs D/sub 1/ line), 780 nm (Rb D/sub 2/ line), and 794 nm (Rb D/sub 1/ line) were fabricated and tested. As a result of the performance test, up to 9 GHz continuous tuning without mode hopping could be obtained by tuning with a piezoelectric transducer only. The linewidth from the beat-note spectrum of two ECDLs was about 200 kHz.  相似文献

We propose and implement a common external cavity to narrow spectral linewidth of two broad-area laser diode arrays (LDAs) and align their center wavelengths. The locked center wavelength of two LDAs can be tuned in the range of ~10 nm by tuning the tilted angle of the diffraction grating. The output beams of two LDAs are spatially overlapped through the polarization beam splitter of the common external cavity, and the total output power equals the power of two LDAs. The center wavelength of each LDA can be independently tuned by shifting the corresponding fast-axis collimation lens. As a result, the high-power two-color LDA operation is demonstrated with the tunable wavelength difference of up to 2 nm (~1 THz).  相似文献

A 760-nm light source of >10 mW is obtained from a frequency-doubled external-cavity diode laser by use of using an erbium-doped fiber amplifier and a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. The 5S(1/2) --> 7S(1/2) two-photon transitions of rubidium are observed with such a light source. This laser frequency is locked to the Rb two-photon transitions with an instability of 10 kHz (1 s). Our experimental scheme provides a compact, high-performance frequency, standard in the S band (1480-1530 nm) for fiber-optic communication and sensing applications.  相似文献

The Fourier transform relationship between the reflected light froma Bragg grating and the complex spatial modulation of the Bragg grating is used to produce a distributed strain sensing system. A tunable external cavity diode laser along with a reference reflector in anoptical fiber are used to produce a measurement of the phase and amplitude of the reflected light from the modulated Bragg grating as a function of wavelength. The system is demonstrated with 22 Bragg gratings in a single fiber on a cantilever beam and compared with foil strain gauge readings.  相似文献

A composite-cavity laser diode is used to monitor the reflectivity or the displacement of the external-cavity mirror for micromechanical photonics devices. Optical disk bits are read out in the near field from the difference in medium reflectivity with an antireflection-coated laser diode and a photodiode. Microbeam vibration is also detected in the near field from the phase difference with an uncoated laser diode and a photodiode. In both cases the carrier-to-noise ratio is very high (more than 45 dB) because of the lack of mode-hopping noise resulting from the extremely short (less than 3 μm) external-cavity length and strong light feedback. These composite-cavity laser diode microdevices are fabricated on a gallium arsenide substrate to eliminate the need for optical alignment.  相似文献
