This paper presents the radioactivity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K for 106 samples of surface soil collected in Southern Vietnam. The mean values of mass activity of radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K for Southern Vietnam are 28.6, 50.7 and 292.6 Bq kg(-1), respectively, which lead to the population-weighted absorbed dose rate of 54.5 nGy h(-1). The average annual effective doses outdoors, indoors and in total of Southern Vietnam are estimated to be 0.067, 0.374 and 0.441 mSv, respectively. The radium equivalent activity and the external hazard index of soil in Southern Vietnam are in the range 23.2-254.1 Bq kg(-1) and 0.06-0.69, respectively.  相似文献

A survey was carried out to determine activity concentration levels and associated dose rates from the naturally occurring radionuclides 232Th, 238U and 40K, in the various geological formations of Cyprus, by means of high-resolution gamma ray spectrometry. A total of 115 representative soil samples were collected from all over the bedrock surface of the island, based on the different lithological units of the study area, sieved through a fine mesh, sealed in 1000 ml plastic Marinelli beakers and measured in the laboratory with respect to gamma radioactivity for a counting time of 18-h each. From the measured spectra, activity concentrations were determined for 232Th (range from 1.0 x 10(-2) to 39.8 Bq kg(-1)), 238U (from 1.0 x 10(-2) to 39.3 Bq kg(-1)) and (40)K (from 4.0 x 10(-2) to 565.8 Bq kg(-1)). Gamma absorbed dose rates in air outdoors were calculated to be in the range from 1.1 x 10(-2) to 51.3 nGy h(-1), depending on the geological features, with an overall mean value of 8.7 nGy h(-1) and a standard deviation of 8.4 nGy h(-1). This value is by a factor of about seven below the corresponding population-weighted world-averaged value of 60 nGy h(-1) and one of the lowest that has been reported from similar investigations worldwide. Assuming a 20% occupancy factor, the corresponding effective dose rates outdoors equivalent to the population were calculated to be between 1.3 x 10(-2) and 62.9 microSv y(-1), with an arithmetic mean value of 10.7 microSv y(-1) and a standard deviation of 10.3 microSv y(-1).  相似文献

One of the causative factors for cancer-inducing mechanisms in humans is radioactive elements present in tobacco leaves used in the manufacture of cigarettes. Smoking of tobacco and its products increases the internal intake and radiation dose due to naturally occurring radionuclides that are considered to be one of the most significant causes of lung cancer. In this work, different commercial types of cigarettes, cigar and moassel were collected from market. Naturally occurring radionuclides (226)Ra and (214)Bi ((238)U series), (228)Ac and (228)Ra ((232)Th series), (40)K and man-made (137)Cs were measured in tobacco using gamma-ray spectrometer. Results show that the average concentrations of (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K were 4.564, 3.940 and 1289.53 Bq kg(-1), respectively. This reflects their origin from the soil by root uptake and fertilisers used in the cultivation of tobacco plants. Concentration of (137)Cs was 0.348 Bq kg(-1) due to root uptake or deposition onto the leaf foliage. For smokers, the annual effective dose due to inhalation of (238)U varied from 49.35 to 139.40 μSv(-1) (average 104.27 μSv y(-1)), while of (232)Th from 23.86 to 111.06 μSv y(-1) (average 65.52 μSv y(-1)). The annual effective dose resulting from (137)Cs was varied from 10.96 to 24.01 nSv y(-1) (average 19.41 nSv y(-1)).  相似文献

Annual effective dose equivalent due to natural gamma radiation from (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K have been evaluated from granites in Turkey. Forty samples were taken for spectrometric analysis. Specific concentrations of (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K in granite samples were determined. Spectroscopy system was used with 1.8 keV (FWHM) coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe) detector. Average values of concentrations of (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K were detected at 15.85, 33.76 and 359 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The average value of radon varies from 0.073 to 0.185 Bq m(-2) h(-1) exhalation depends on the specific concentration of uranium. The dose rate due to this highest activity which have been evaluated by a Monte Carlo transport calculations does not exceed 0.4 mSv a(-1).  相似文献

Studies of natural radioactivity in spring water in Swieradów-Czerniawa Health Resort were performed with the use of nuclear and mass spectrometry techniques. The investigated region is situated in the Sudety Mountains, where uranium exploration was conducted in the early 1950s of the last century. Annual effective doses due to radionuclide intake were calculated for 4 out of 20 spring waters used for consumption by spa patients and inhabitants. The summed effective doses without 222Rn were of the range 0.4 microSv to 9.2 microSv, for patient for of a 20-day duration stay and from 1.3 microSv y(-1) to 26.7 microSv y(-1) for an inhabitant. The contribution of radon consumed with water raises these values to 209.4 microSv per 20 days and 608.3 microSv y(-1) for a patient and inhabitant, respectively.  相似文献

Radionuclides which present in different beach sands are sources of external exposure that contribute to the total radiation exposure of human. In this work, superficial samples of beach sand were collected from the Red Sea coastline (Ras Gharib, Hurghada, Safaga, Qusier and Marsa Alam areas) and at 20 km on Qena-Safaga road. The distribution of natural radionuclides in sand beach samples was studied by gamma spectrometry. The activity concentrations of primordial and artificial radionuclides in samples that are collected from the coastal environment of the Red Sea were 19.2 +/- 3 Bq kg(-1) for (210)Pb, 21.1 +/- 1 Bq kg(-1) for (226)Ra, 22.7 +/- 2 Bq kg(-1) for (238)U, 1.0 +/- 0.1 Bq kg(-1) for (235)U, 11.6 +/- 1 Bq kg(-1) for (228)Ra, 13.0 +/- 1 Bq kg(-1) for (228)Th, 12.4 +/- 1 Bq kg(-1) for (232)Th, 930 +/- 32 Bq kg(-1) for (40)K and 1.2 +/- 0.3 Bq kg(-1) for (137)Cs. The mean external gamma-dose rate was 62.5 +/- 3.2 nSv h(-1), 54.4 +/- 2.8 nGy h(-1) Ra equivalent activity (Ra(eq)) was 107 +/- 5.8 Bq kg(-1), 0.86 +/- 0.04 Bq kg(-1) for representative level index (I(gamma)) and effective dose rate was 0.067 +/- 0.003 mSv y(-1) in beach sand red sea, in air due to naturally occurring radionuclides.  相似文献

The natural radioactivity of some building materials commonly used in Cuba was measured by gamma spectrometry. Typical concentrations encountered so far encountered are in the ranges: 47-2511 Bq kg(-1) for (40)K; 9-71 Bq kg(-1) for (226)Ra; and 2-38 Bq kg(-1) for (232)Th. The external gamma ray absorbed doses in indoor air and the corresponding effective dose-equivalents in a typical dwelling are presented in this paper.  相似文献

Dosimetric performance requirements must take the following into consideration: general radiation protection requirements established by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), workplace conditions prevailing during (routine) work, and technical requirements set by international or national bodies. For performance tests the general requirements on the precision of dose measurements can be represented by the 'trumpet curves'. For photon radiation several measurements of the workplace conditions are reported. The main conclusions drawn from these measurements are the following: the photon energy range from 20 keV to 2 MeV, or even 7 MeV, is of importance for individual monitoring. The range of directions of radiation incidence on the dosemeter is very large, nearly the frontal hemisphere or even rotating, and almost all spectra are broad with respect to energy. In view of the great variety of workplace conditions, the scope of most of the technical requirements is not sufficiently great. No technical requirement is at present fully in accordance with the general principles of an uncertainty analysis.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of natural and artificial radionuclides were measured in the eastern region of Sichuan province (China). One hundred and ninety-three soil samples from this region were collected and analysed by high-purity germanium gamma spectrometry. The measured results show that the average radioactivity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs in the soil samples are 26, 49, 440 and 6 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The calculated average radium equivalent activity is 130 Bq kg(-1), which is less than the recommended limit of 370 Bq kg(-1). The absorbed dose rate and annual effective dose are 60 nGy h(-1) and 74 μSv, respectively. This is the first time the absorbed dose rate in the east region of Sichuan has been mapped. Overall, the environmental radiation background is greater in the southern part of the area studied than in the northern.  相似文献

Thirty granite samples commonly used in Turkey were surveyed for natural radioactivity. Concentrations of natural radionuclides in all samples were determined by gamma-ray spectroscopy with hyper-pure germanium detector. The activity concentrations measured for (226)Ra and (232)Th ranged from 0.7±0.1 to 186±1 Bq kg(-1), and from 0.5±0.1 to 249±2 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The activity concentrations obtained for (40)K varied from minimum detectable activity (0.4 Bq kg(-1)) to 1935±11 Bq kg(-1). The radium equivalent activity (Ra(eq)), the absorbed dose rate (D), the external hazard index (H(ex)) and the annual effective dose equivalent were also calculated and compared with the international recommended values. Granite samples were also analysed mineralogically. It was observed that the presence of large amount orthoclase and radiogenic accessory minerals are the sources of high activity concentration levels.  相似文献

Activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs in soil samples collected from the most populous area of southern Punjab of Pakistan have been measured by gamma-ray spectrometry. The measured activity concentrations for these radionuclides are compared with the reported data from different other countries and it is found that measured activity concentrations are comparable with the worldwide measured average values reported by the UNSCEAR. Subsequently assessed radiological effects show that the mean radium equivalent activity (Ra(eq)) is 96.7 +/- 15.2 Bq kg(-1) and air absorbed dose rate (D) is 46.1 +/- 7.3 nGy h(-1). The values of internal and external radiation hazard indices are found to be less than unity. The annual effective radiation dose is calculated to be 0.28 +/- 0.05 mSv, which is well below the limit of 1.0 mSv y(-1) recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, for the general public.  相似文献

The contents of natural radionuclides ((226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K) were measured in investigated samples (granite Gabal Ras Barud, Eastern Desert in Egypt) by using gamma spectrometry (NaI (Tl) 3″×3″). The activities of (226)Ra, (232)Th series and (40)K are between (3.8±0.5 and 172.8±1135.1±56.8 8.6), (2.3±0.3 and 103.8±5.2) and (53.1±2.7 and 1135.1±56.8) Bq kg(-1), respectively. With average total annual dose being only 67.2 μSv y(-1), this value is about 6.72 % of the 1.0 mSv y(-1) recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP-60, 1990) as the maximum annual dose to members of the public. Geochemical studies revealed that Gabal Ras Barud is formed from a highly fractionated biotite granite, with SiO(2) >75 % and generally enriched in alkali with K/Na >8 %.  相似文献

The activity concentration of 222Rn, 226Ra and total uranium in groundwater samples collected from wells distributed throughout the state of Chihuahua has been measured. The values obtained of total uranium activity concentration in groundwater throughout the state run from <0.03 up to 1.34 Bq l-1. Generally, radium activity concentration was <0.16 Bq l-1, with some exceptions; in spring water of San Diego de Alcalá, in contrast, the value reached approximately 5.3 Bq l-1. Radon activity concentration obtained throughout the state was from 1.0 to 39.8 Bq l-1. A linear correlation between uranium and radon dissolved in groundwater of individual wells was observed near Chihuahua City. Committed effective dose estimates for reference individuals were performed, with results as high as 134 microSv for infants in Aldama city. In Aldama and Chihuahua cities the average and many individual wells showed activity concentration values of uranium exceeding the Mexican norm of drinking water quality.  相似文献

Measurements of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K activity concentrations in commercial granite tiles imported in Greece were performed using gamma-ray spectrometry. The activity concentration of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K ranged from 1 to 434, 2 to 239 and 71 to 1576 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The calculated activity concentration index (I) values for all granite samples examined were found to be within the EC limit values for superficial and other materials with restricted use.  相似文献

Natural radioactivity in drinking water was determined in population-based random study of 472 private wells. The mean concentrations of (222)Rn, (226)Ra, (234)U, (238)U, (210)Pb and (210)Po in drilled wells were 460, 0.05, 0.35, 0.26, 0.04 and 0.05 Bq l(-1), and in wells dug in the soil were 50, 0.016, 0.02, 0.015, 0.013 and 0.007 Bq l(-1), respectively. Approximately 10% of the drilled wells exceeded a radon concentration of 1000 Bq l(-1) and 18% a uranium concentration of 15 microg l(-1). The mean annual effective dose from natural radionuclides for a drilled well user was 0.4 mSv and 0.05 mSv for a user of a well dug in the soil. The effective dose arising from (222)Rn was 75% of the total of all natural radionuclides for drilled well users. As regards long-lived radionuclides, (210)Po and (210)Pb caused the largest portion of the effective dose. The dose arising from (238)U, (234)U and (226)Ra was only 8% of the total of all natural radionuclides.  相似文献

Fars province is a large populated large province located in the southwest of Iran. This work presents a study of natural and radioactivity levels in soil samples of this province. For this purpose, 126 samples were gathered from different regions of the province and analysed by gamma spectroscopy to quantify radioactivity concentrations of radionuclides using a high-purity germanium detector and spectroscopy system. The results of this investigation show the average concentrations of 271 ± 28 Bq kg(-1), 6.37 ± 0.5 Bq kg(-1), 14.9 ± 0.9 Bq kg(-1) and 26.3 ± 1.9 Bq kg(-1) for (40)K, (137)Cs, (232)Th and (238)U in soil, respectively. Finally, baseline maps were established for the concentrations of each of the radionuclides in different regions. The absorbed dose rate and the annual effective dose (AED) were also calculated for the radionuclides according to the guidelines of UNSCEAR 2000. The average AED from the radioactivity content of soil in this province was found to be 39.9 ± 1.8 μSv.  相似文献

Phosphogypsum material is the phosphate fertilizer by-product usually used for soil fertility. This material contains high activity concentration of uranium (238U) and radium (226Ra and 228Ra) radionuclides. Addition of phosphate fertilizers to soils leads to accumulation of radium nuclides with other elements on soil. These nuclides can diffuse through soil layers and dissolve in groundwater components. Risks may be evolved from using groundwater for drinking purposes. The risks associated with radium nuclides and the exposure dose rate for soils and groundwater samples are assessed. Sand mineral is found to be a good adsorbent that can be used as a natural ion exchanger for the removal of radium and phosphate ions from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

In the present work, naturally occurring radionuclides of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were measured in soil samples collected from the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. It was found that the activity concentrations ranged from 12 to 120 Bq kg−1 for 226Ra, from 13 to 121 Bq kg−1 for 232Th and from 204 to 1295 Bq kg−1 for 40K. Besides naturally occurring radionuclides, 137Cs activity concentration was measured in soil, lichen and moss samples and it was found that 137Cs activity concentration ranged from 27 to 775 Bq kg−1 with for soil, from 29 to 879 Bq kg−1 for lichen and from 67 to 1396 Bq kg−1 for moss samples. Annual effective doses due to the naturally occurring radionuclides and 137Cs were estimated. Ecological half-lives of 137Cs in lichen and moss species were estimated. The decrease of the activity concentrations in the present measurements (2007) relative to those in 1993 indicated ecological half-lives between 1.36 and 2.96 years for lichen and between 1.35 and 2.85 years for moss species.  相似文献

Sorption potential of waste short hemp fibers for Pb(2+), Cd(2+) and Zn(2+) ions from aqueous media was explored. In order to assess the influence of hemp fiber chemical composition on their heavy metals sorption potential, lignin and hemicelluloses were removed selectively by chemical modification. The degree of fiber swelling and water retention value were determined in order to evaluate the change in accessibility of the cell wall components to aqueous solutions due to the fiber modification. The effects of initial ion concentration, contact time and cosorption were studied in batch sorption experiments. The obtained results show that when the content of either lignin or hemicelluloses is progressively reduced by chemical treatment, the sorption properties of hemp fibers are improved. Short hemp fibers are capable of sorbing metal ions (Pb(2+), Cd(2+) and Zn(2+)) from single as well as from ternary metal ion solutions. The maximum total uptake capacities for Pb(2+), Cd(2+) and Zn(2+) ions from single solutions are the same, i.e. 0.078mmol/g, and from ternary mixture 0.074, 0.035 and 0.035mmol/g, respectively.  相似文献
