C/SiC–ZrB2 composites prepared via precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) were treated at high temperatures ranging from 1200 °C to 1800 °C. The mass loss rate of the composites increased with increasing annealing temperature and the flexural properties of the composites increased initially and then decreased reversely. Out of the four samples, the flexural strength and the modulus of the specimen treated at 1400 °C are maximal at 216.9 MPa and 35.5 GPa, suggesting the optimal annealing temperature for mechanical properties is 1400 °C. The fiber microstructure evolution during high-temperature annealing would not cause the decrease of fiber strength, and moderate annealing temperature enhanced the thermal stress whereas weakened the interface bonding, thus boosting the mechanical properties. However, once the annealing temperature exceeded 1600 °C, element diffusion and carbothermal reduction between ZrO2 impurity and carbon fibers led to fiber erosion and a strong interface, jeopardizing the mechanical properties of the composites. The mass loss rate and linear recession rate of composites treated at 1800 °C are merely 0.0141 g/s and 0.0161 mm/s, respectively.  相似文献

Silica carbide modified carbon cloth laminated C–C composites have been successfully joined to lithium–aluminum–silicate (LAS) glass–ceramics using magnesium–aluminum–silicate (MAS) glass–ceramics as interlayer by vacuum hot-press technique. The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of C–C/LAS composite joints were investigated. SiC coating modified the wettability between C–C composites and LAS glass–ceramics. Three continuous and homogenous interfaces (i.e. C–C/SiC, SiC/MAS and MAS/LAS) were formed by element interdiffusions and chemical reactions, which lead to a smooth transition from C–C composites to LAS glass–ceramics. The C–C/LAS joints have superior flexural property with a quasi-ductile behavior. The average flexural strength of C–C/LAS joints can be up to 140.26 MPa and 160.02 MPa at 25 °C and 800 °C, respectively. The average shear strength of C–C/LAS joints achieves 21.01 MPa and the joints are apt to fracture along the SiC/MAS interface. The high retention of mechanical properties at 800 °C makes the joints to be potentially used in a broad temperature range as structural components.  相似文献

Lightweight carbon-bonded carbon fiber (CBCF) composites were fabricated with chopped carbon fibers and dilute phenolic resin solution by pressure filtration, followed by carbonization at 1000 °C in argon. The as-prepared CBCF composites had a homogenous fiber network distribution in xy direction and quasi-layered structure in z direction. The pyrolytic carbon derived from phenolic resin was mainly accumulated at the intersections and surfaces of chopped carbon fibers. The composites possessed compressive strengths ranged from 0.93–6.63 MPa in xy direction to 0.30–2.01 MPa in z direction with a density of 0.162–0.381 g cm 3. The thermal conductivity increased from 0.314–0.505 to 0.139–0.368 Wm 1 K 1 in xy and z directions, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the CBCF composites prepared by this technique can significantly contribute to improve the thermal insulation and mechanical properties at high temperature.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) reinforced carbon matrix (MWNT/C) composites have been explored using mesophase pitch as carbon matrix precursor in the present work. Results show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs)can enhance the mechanical properties of carbon matrix significantly. The maximal increment of the bending strength and stiffness of the composites, compared with the carbon matrix, are 147% and 400%, respectively. Whereas the highest in-plane thermal conductivity of the composites is 86 W m 1 K 1 which much lower than that of carbon matrix (253 W m 1 K 1).At the same time the electrical resistivity of the composites is much higher than that of matrix. It is implicated that CNTs seem to play the role of thermal/electrical barrier in the composites. FSEM micrograph of the fracture surface for the composites shows that the presence of CNTs restrains the crystallite growth of carbon matrix, which is one of factors that improve mechanical properties and decrease the conductive properties of the composites. The defects and curved shape of CNTs are also the affecting factors on the conductive properties of the composites.  相似文献

A new class of conductive composites with good gas sensitivity was fabricated by filling polystyrene with vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNF). A solution mixing/solvent removal procedure was used. VGCNFs form conductive networks at fiber loadings above the percolation limit within the matrix. Greatly improved conductivity is achieved relative to the same volume fraction of carbon black addition when these fibers are distributed to give reasonably uniform dispersions in the matrix. The high aspect ratios of these fibers (∼70–250 nm diameters and 5–75 μm lengths) assist in forming low wt.% percolation thresholds (below 1 wt.% fiber). Excellent gas sensitivity with 104–105 times higher than the original resistance value in many saturated organic vapors and a maximum resistance response of about 1.1 × 105 times exposure to saturated THF vapor at 6.25 wt.% of VGCNF in the polystyrene matrix was observed. The maximum resistance response declined from about 2.0 × 105 times at 15 °C to about 3.4 × 104 times at 55 °C. These composites exhibited stable and reusable gas sensitivity to THF vapor. Carbon black/polystyrene composites exhibit a negative vapor coefficient (NVC) upon swelling caused by filler redistribution. In contrast, VGCNF/polystyrene composites are more stable, with much smaller NVC values due to their high aspect ratios and reinforcing effects which stabilize electrical percolation pathways. Thus, VGCNF/organic polymer composites are good gas sensor candidates for detecting organic vapors.  相似文献

TiC reinforced Al matrix composites were produced by the additions of elemental carbon to both Al + 4%Ti and Al + 5%Ti alloys. It is shown that the microstructure, phase composition as well as fracture behavior of the composites produced are controlled by the processing parameters, such as temperature, amount of excess carbon and duration. Composite microstructure subjected to 1300 °C for 15 min includes only TiC particles where the fracture occurs in a ductile manner whilst composites subjected to 1200 °C for 30 min contain Al3Ti and TiC particles which show mixed mode of fracture behavior where Al3Ti particles resulted in brittle fracture due to their coarser size.  相似文献

Rods made of continuous carbon fibers are being extensively used as structural materials in light weight micro-air vehicles owing to their excellent specific modulus and strength. Further, they possess excellent tribological characteristics – low friction and wear coupled with high conductivity making them an ideal reinforcement in developing light weight, high strength aluminum based metal matrix composites. In the last three decades, researchers have focused mainly on the study of mechanical and tribological behavior of discontinuous carbon fiber reinforced metal matrix composites. However, no information is available regarding the tribological behavior of carbon fibers rod reinforced metal matrix composites, although it is interesting and will result in expanding the applications of metal matrix composites (MMC) where tribological failures are expected. In the light of the above, the present work focuses on development of innovative Al6061–carbon fiber rods composites by casting route and assessing their tribological characteristics. Carbon fiber rods of 4 mm and 6 mm diameters were surface sensitized to achieve electro less nickel coating. Copper plating on the electro less nickel coated carbon fiber rods were carried out. The copper plated carbon fiber rods were arranged in cylindrical array in the metallic mold to which molten Al6061 alloy after degassing was poured at a temperature of 700 °C. The developed innovative composites were subjected to density tests, microstructure studies, hardness, friction and wear tests. A pin on disk configuration was used with hardened steel as the counter face. Load was varied from 20 N to 60 N while the sliding velocity was varied between 0.12 m/s and 0.62 m/s. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies on worn surfaces and wear debris have been carried out to validate the wear mechanism. The developed innovative composites (11 Vol.% & 25 Vol.%) have exhibited lower coefficient of friction and wear rates when compared with matrix alloy.  相似文献

Large-size samples of carbon/carbon composites were prepared using thermal gradient chemical vapor infiltration with kerosene precursor at 950, 1020, 1100, 1180 and 1250 °C. The temperature gradient, kinetics and density distribution of these samples were studied and the microstructure of pyrolytic carbon was examined by polarized light microscopy. The results show that the initial infiltration rate increased from 5.81 to 21.32 g min?1 by increasing deposition temperature from 950 to 1250 °C. The densification kinetics relied on deposition temperature and competition between reaction and diffusion, and the diffusion mechanism transformed from bulk to Knudsen diffusion regime. The calculated apparent activation energy is about 68.2 kJ mol?1. The temperature range 1020–1100 °C is appropriate for fabricating composites with high final bulk density due to high degree of pore filling and the density of sample S3 infiltrated at 1100 °C is the highest among all investigated samples.  相似文献

The carbon/silicon carbide brake materials were prepared by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) combined with liquid melt infiltration (LMI). The carbon fiber preform was fabricated with the three dimension needling method. The microstructure, mechanical, thermophysical, and frictional properties of C/SiC composites were investigated. The results indicated that the composites were composed of 65 wt%C, 27 wt%SiC, and 8 wt%Si. The density and porosity were 2.1 g cm−3 and 4.4%, respectively. The C/SiC brake materials exhibited excellent toughness. The average dynamic friction coefficient and static friction coefficient of the materials were about 0.34 and 0.41, respectively. The friction coefficient was stable. The fade ratio of the friction coefficient under moist conditions was about 2.9%. The linear wear rate was less than 1.9 μm side−1 cycle−1. These results show that C/SiC composites have excellent properties for use as brake materials for aircraft.  相似文献

We report an easy and efficient approach to the development of advanced thermoplastic composites based on multi-scale carbon fiber (CF) and graphene nanoplatelet (GN) reinforcement. Poly (arylene ether nitrile) (PEN)/CF/GN composites, prepared by the twin-screw extrusion, exhibited excellent mechanical properties. For example, the flexural modulus of PEN/CF/GN composites was 18.6 GPa, which is 1.7, 4.5 and 6.4 times larger than those of PEN/CF composites, PEN/GN composites and PEN host, respectively. Based on the SEM image observation, such mechanical enhancements can be attributed to the synergetic effect of micro-scale CF and nano-scale GN in the PEN matrix (decreased matrix-rich and free-volume regions and enhanced interfacial interactions). For 5 wt.% GN-filled PEN/CF/GN composites, the Td30% of PEN/CF/GN composites was 145 °C and 62.8 °C compared with those of PEN host and PEN/CF composites, respectively. This study has demonstrated that multi-scale CF and GN have an obvious synergetic reinforcing effect on the mechanical properties and thermal stabilities of thermoplastic composites, which provides an easy and effective way to design and improve the properties of composite materials.  相似文献

The ablation, mechanical and thermal properties of vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) (Pyrograf III™ Applied Sciences, Inc.)/phenolic resin (SC-1008, Borden Chemical, Inc.) composites were evaluated to determine the potential of using this material in solid rocket motor nozzles. Composite specimens with varying VGCF loadings (30–50% wt.) including one sample with ex-rayon carbon fiber plies were prepared and exposed to a plasma torch for 20 s with a heat flux of 16.5 MW/m2 at approximately 1650°C. Low erosion rates and little char formation were observed, confirming that these materials were promising for rocket motor nozzle materials. When fiber loadings increased, mechanical properties and ablative properties improved. The VGCF composites had low thermal conductivities (approximately 0.56 W/m-K) indicating they were good insulating materials. If a 65% fiber loading in VGCF composite could be achieved, then ablative properties are projected to be comparable to or better than the composite material currently used on the Space Shuttle Reusable Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM).  相似文献

The mechanical properties of newly developed aspen fiber–polypropylene composites (APC) were experimentally explored and numerically predicted at the temperatures and humidity that are typical for domestic housing applications. The mechanical properties of APCs with five different fiber-loadings were evaluated at the room temperature, 4 °C, and 40 °C. Environmental effects on the mechanical properties of APCS were experimentally quantified after conditioning the APCs with two different fiber-loadings in the following temperature and humidity for over 7000 h: (1) hot/dry at 40 °C and 30% relative humidity (RH), (2) hot/wet at 40 °C and 82% RH, (3) cold/dry at 4 °C and 30% RH, and (4) cold/wet at 4 °C and 82% RH. The tensile moduli, flexural moduli, and the flexural strength increased as the woodfiber content increased in the composites. However, the tensile strength decreased as the fiber content increased. The tensile strength was shown to slightly improve with an addition of a coupling agent between the aspen fibers and polypropylene. The simple empirical micromechanics Halpin–Tsai model for randomly distributed short fiber reinforced composites was employed to predict the homogenized elastic moduli of APC, by optimizing the interfacial model parameter. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs confirmed that an addition of the adhesion promoter maleated anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) between the aspen fibers and polymeric matrix improved the interfacial bonding.  相似文献

Thermal degradation behaviors of the poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber and phenolic resin matrix were investigated. The unidirectional PBO fiber reinforced phenolic resin composite material laminates were fabricated and exposed in a muffle furnace of 300 °C, 550 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C for 5 min, respectively, to study the effects of thermal treatment on mechanical properties of the composites. After undergone thermal treatments at 300 °C, 550 °C and 700 °C for 5 min, the flexural strength was reduced by 17%, 37% and 80%, respectively, the flexural modulus was decreased by 5%, 14% and 48%, respectively, and the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) was lowered by 12%, 48% and 80%, respectively. Thermal treatment at 300 °C, the phenolic resin began to pyrolyze and shrink resulted in the irreversible damage of the composites. After 550 °C thermal treatment, the phenolic resin pyrolyzed mostly but the PBO fiber had no obvious pyrolyze, the interface had sever broken. After 700 °C thermal treatment, the phenolic resin formed amorphous carbonaceous and PBO fiber pyrolyzed mostly so the mechanical properties dropped dramatically. At being heated at 800 °C for 5 min, the fiber was nearly totally pyrolyzed and and kept fibrous carbonaceous although the specimen became too brittle to stand any load thereon.  相似文献

Mechanical performance of three oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) based on Nextel 610 fibers and SiOC, alumina, and mullite/SiOC matrices respectively, is evaluated herein. Tensile strength and stiffness of all materials decreased at 1000 °C and 1200 °C, probably because of degradation of fiber properties beyond 1000 °C. Microstructural changes in the composites during exposure at 1000 °C and 1200 °C for 50 h reduce their flexural strength, fracture toughness and work of fracture. A literature review regarding mechanical properties of several oxide/oxide CMCs revealed lower influence of fiber properties on composite strength compared with elastic modulus. The tested composites exhibit comparable stiffness and strength but higher fracture toughness compared with average values determined from a literature review. Considering CMCs with different compositions, we observed an interesting linear trend between strength and fracture toughness. The validity of the linear relationship between fracture strength and flexural toughness for CMCs is discussed.  相似文献

Static strength tests were carried out for cured carbon nano-fiber (CNF) dispersed resin as tow-phase composites and for CFRP laminates using CNF dispersed resin as three-phase composites. To obtain these CFRP laminates, the CNF dispersed resin was impregnated to CF reinforcement and cured by hot press. The CNF used was a cup-stacked type of nano-fiber, CARBERE®, made by GSI CREOS Corporation, Japan. Two CNF aspect ratios of 10 and 50 were employed. These fiber lengths of the CNF were controlled about 1000 nm (AR10) and 5000 nm (AR50), respectively. The CNF was dispersed to EPIKOTE 827® epoxy resin in two values of CNF weight ratios, 5 and 10% to the resin. TORAYCA® C6343 plain woven fabric was used for reinforcement of the CFRP laminates. The cure condition with the agent of aromatic amine EPIKURE W® was 100 °C for two hours followed by a post cure of 175 °C for 4 h. The static strength tests led to the conclusion that the dispersion of CNF into epoxy improves mechanical properties of the tow-phase composites, and that CFRP laminates with CNF dispersed resin also exhibit higher compressive strength than CFRP laminates without CNF as control. Possibilities of improvement in mechanical properties were confirmed in the two and three-phase composites. Moreover, a proportional tendency in strength improvements to CNF weight content was found in the two present composites so far in the present test results.  相似文献

The effects of the low earth orbit environment on three types of unidirectional high-modulus carbon fiber (M40 J, M55 J and M60 J)-reinforced composites were determined in detail. The synergistic environmental factors were the vacuum environment and thermal cycling. Cyclic thermal loading was performed in the temperature range between 120 °C and ?175 °C for up to 2000 cycles under the high-vacuum state of 1.3?3 Pa. The material responses were characterized through an assessment of the physical, thermal and mechanical property changes. It follows from the experimental results presented that the synergistic actions of the vacuum and the thermal cycling on the composite property degradation can be attributed to the formation of microvoids and interfacial sliding at the fiber–matrix interface in the early stages of cycling. The implications of these degradation processes based on the dependence of composite properties on vacuum thermal cycling are also discussed.  相似文献

Ti–Nb–Ta–Zr quaternary alloying system is very promising for biomedical alloys. It is due to good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of titanium alloys. Moreover no potentially harmful elements are contained in this system.Mechanical properties were influenced by changing the chemical composition and by various heat-treatment operations. The alloys were prepared by arc melting and then they were hot forged (900–1000 °C). After solution treatment 850 °C/0.5 h/water quenched, cold swaging was carried out with section reduction about 85%. As final heat treatment aging at 450 °C/8 h/furnace cooling was used.Mechanical properties were measured from tensile tests results at cold swaged and aged specimens. The microstructure was observed by using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-thin foils method. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the phase composition. By using these techniques the changes in microstructure caused by precipitation during aging treatment were clarified. After aging, the presence of ω or α phases may occur. Influence of changing Zr and Ta contents on mechanical properties and also on precipitation of secondary phases during aging treatment was observed.  相似文献

Poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3AT) with a high Seebeck coefficient has recently been reported. However, P3AT/inorganic conductive composites exhibit relatively poor thermoelectric performance because of their low electrical conductivity. In this work, carbon fiber sheets with a high electrical conductivity were chosen as the inorganic phase, and poly(3-octylthiophene)(P3OT)/carbon fiber composites were prepared by casting P3OT solution onto the carbon fiber sheets. The carbon fiber sheets incorporated into the composites can provide good electrical conductivity, and P3OT can provide a high Seebeck coefficient. The highest power factor of 7.05 μW m−1 K−2 was obtained for the composite with 50 wt% P3OT. This work suggests a promising method for preparing large-scale thermoelectric composites with excellent properties.  相似文献

This paper reports the accelerated thermal ageing behaviors of pure epoxy resin and 3-D carbon fiber/epoxy braided composites. Specimens have been aged in air at 90 °C, 110 °C, 120 °C, 130 °C and 180 °C. Microscopy observations and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry analyses revealed that the epoxy resin oxidative degradation only occurred within the surface regions. The surface oxidized layer protects inner resin from further oxidation. Both the resin degradation and resin stiffening caused by post-curing effects will influence the compression behaviors. For the braided composite, the matrix ageing is the main ageing mode at temperatures lower than glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the pure epoxy resin, while the fiber/matrix interface debonding could be observed at the temperatures higher than Tg, such as the temperature of 180 °C. The combination of matrix degradation and fiber/resin interface cracking leads to the continuous reduction of compressive behaviors.  相似文献

Oxidized PAN-fiber felt was carbonized to 600, 1000, and 1800 °C, respectively. Different carbon/carbon composites (C/C composites) were prepared from oxidized PAN-fiber felt, the carbonized felts, and resol-type phenol–formaldehyde resin. These composites were then carbonized and graphized at temperatures of between 600 and 2400 °C. The C/C composite made with oxidized PAN-fiber felt showed a strong fiber/matrix bonding, and those developed from the carbonized felt (heat-treatment of 1800 °C) showed a poor fiber/matrix bonding. The graphitized composites reinforced with the oxidized PAN-fiber felt resulted in having a high flexural strength (325 MPa), and the graphitized composites reinforced with the carbonized felt (carbonized at 1800 °C) had a low flexural strength (9 MPa). It was found that the stress-orientation promoted the formation of the anisotropic texture around the fibers as well as between the fibers. This felt may very well be able to provide a low-cost route for producing multidimensional C/C composites.  相似文献
