A solid-state drawing and winding process was done to create thin aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets from CNT arrays. However, waviness and poor packing of CNTs in the sheets are two main weaknesses restricting their reinforcing efficiency in composites. This report proposes a simple press-drawing technique to reduce wavy CNTs and to enhance dense packing of CNTs in the sheets. Non-pressed and pressed CNT/epoxy composites were developed using prepreg processing with a vacuum-assisted system. Effects of pressing on the mechanical properties of the aligned CNT sheets and CNT/epoxy composites were examined. Pressing with distributed loads of 147, 221, and 294 N/m showed a substantial increase in the tensile strength and the elastic modulus of the aligned CNT sheets and their composites. The CNT sheets under a press load of 221 N/m exhibited the best mechanical properties found in this study. With a press load of 221 N/m, the pressed CNT sheet and its composite, respectively, enhanced the tensile strength by 139.1 and 141.9%, and the elastic modulus by 489 and 77.6% when compared with non-pressed ones. The pressed CNT/epoxy composites achieved high tensile strength (526.2 MPa) and elastic modulus (100.2 GPa). Results show that press-drawing is an important step to produce superior CNT sheets for development of high-performance CNT composites.  相似文献

Polypropylene/aluminum–multi-walled carbon nanotube (PP/Al–CNT) composites were prepared by a twin-screw extruder. The morphology indicates that the CNTs are well embedded or implanted within Al-flakes rather than attached on the surface. During preparation of composites, the CNTs came apart from Al–CNT so that free CNTs as well as Al–CNT were observed in PP/Al–CNT composite. The crystallization temperatures of PP/CNT and PP/Al–CNT composites were increased from 111 °C for PP to 127 °C for the composites. The decomposition temperature increased by 55 °C for PP/CNT composite and 75 °C for PP/Al–CNT composite. The PP/Al–CNT composite showed higher thermal conductivity than PP/CNT and PP/Al-flake composites with increasing filler content. PP/Al–CNT composites showed the viscosity values between PP/CNT and PP/Al-flake composites. PP/Al–CNT composite showed higher tensile modulus and lower tensile strength with increasing filler content compared to PP/CNT and PP/Al-flake composites.

In carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs), the good dispersion of CNTs in the matrix as well as the processing problems are the major challenges inhibiting the development of these composites. In this study, well-dispersed CNTs reinforced aluminum (Al) matrix nanocomposite was fabricated by a novel Spread–Dispersion (SD) method. Specimens with ultra-fine grain size down to 20 nm were obtained. The tensile strength of the CNT nanocomposite was 66% greater than the base matrix with a minor decrease in ductility. Such enhancement was analyzed on the basis of segregation and uniform distribution of clustered CNTs, disappearance of the CNT-free zones, eliminated porosity, stronger Al/CNT bonding and the retention of CNT graphitic structure.  相似文献

In this investigation, carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced aluminum composites were prepared by the molecular-level mixing process using copper coated CNTs. The mixing of CNTs was accomplished by ultrasonic mixing and ball milling. Electroless Cu-coated CNTs were used to enhance the interfacial bonding between CNTs and aluminum. Scanning electron microscope analysis revealed the homogenous dispersion of Cu-coated CNTs in the composite samples compared with the uncoated CNTs. The samples were pressureless sintered under vacuum followed by hot rolling to promote the uniform microstructure and dispersion of CNTs. In 1.0 wt.% uncoated and Cu-coated CNT/Al composites, compared to pure Al, the microhardness increased by 44% and 103%, respectively. As compared to the pure Al, for 1.0 wt.% uncoated CNT/Al composite, increase in yield strength and ultimate tensile strength was estimated about 58% and 62%, respectively. However, in case of 1.0 wt.% Cu-coated CNT/Al composite, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were increased significantly about 121% and 107%, respectively.  相似文献

This study highlights the use of a metallic coating of nanoscale thickness on carbon nanotube to enhance the interfacial characteristics in carbon nanotube reinforced magnesium (Mg) composites. Comparisons between two reinforcements were targeted: (a) pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and (b) nickel-coated carbon nanotubes (Ni–CNTs). It is demonstrated that clustering adversely affects the bonding of pristine CNTs with Mg particles. However, the presence of nickel coating on the CNT results in the formation of Mg2Ni intermetallics at the interface which improved the adhesion between Mg/Ni–CNT particulates. The presence of grain size refinement and improved dispersion of the Ni–CNT reinforcements in the Mg matrix were also observed. These result in simultaneous enhancements of the micro-hardness, ultimate tensile strength and 0.2% yield strength by 41%, 39% and 64% respectively for the Mg/Ni–CNT composites in comparison with that of the monolithic Mg.  相似文献

The dual role of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in strengthening roll bonded aluminum composites has been elucidated in this study. An increase in the elastic modulus by 59% has been observed at 2 vol.% CNT addition in aluminum, whereas tensile strength increases by 250% with 9.5 vol.% CNT addition. CNTs play a dual role in the strengthening mechanism in Al–CNT composite foil, which can be correlated to the degree of dispersion of CNTs in the matrix. Better CNT dispersion leads to improvement of elastic properties. In contrast, CNT clusters in the aluminum matrix impede dislocation motion, causing strain hardening and thus improvement in the tensile strength. Dislocation density of the composites has been computed as a function of CNT content to show the effect on strain hardening of the metal matrix–CNT composite.  相似文献

Uniaxial tensile tests were performed on plasma spray formed (PSF) Al–Si alloy reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The addition of CNTs leads to 78% increase in the elastic modulus of the composite. There was a marginal increase in the tensile strength of CNT reinforced composite with degradation in strain to failure by 46%. The computed critical pullout length of CNTs ranges from 2.1 to 19.7 μm which is higher than the experimental length of CNT, leading to relatively poor load transfer and low tensile strength of PSF nanocomposites. Fracture surface validates that tensile fracture is governed strongly by the constitutive hierarchical microstructure of the plasma sprayed Al–CNT nanocomposite. The fracture path in Al–CNT nanocomposite occurs in Al–Si matrix adjacent to SiC layer on CNT surface.  相似文献

In the present study, the consistent effective elastic properties of straight, circular carbon nanotube epoxy composites are derived using the micromechanics theory. The CNT composites are known to provide high stiffness and elastic properties when the shape of the fibers is cylindrical and straight. Accordingly, in the present work, the effective elastic moduli of composite are newly obtained for straight, circular CNTs aligned in the specified direction as well as distributed randomly in the matrix. In this direction, novel analytical expressions are proposed for four cases of fiber property. First, aligned, and straight CNTs are considered with transverse isotropy in fiber coordinates, and the composite properties are also transversely isotropic in global coordinates. The short comings in the earlier developments are effectively addressed by deriving the consistent form of the strain tensor and the stiffness tensor of the CNT nanocomposite. Subsequently, effective relations for composites reinforced with aligned, straight CNTs but fibers isotropic in local coordinates are newly developed under hydrostatic loading. The effect of the unsymmetric Eshelby tensor for cylindrical fibers on the overall properties of the nanocomposite is included by deriving the strain concentration tensors. Next, the random distribution of CNT fibers in the matrix is studied with fibers being transversely isotropic as well as isotropic when CNT nanocomposites are subjected to uniform loading. The corresponding relations for the effective elastic properties are newly derived. The modeling technique is validated with results reported, and the variations in the effective properties for different CNT volume fractions are presented.  相似文献

Carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced composites have been identified as promising structural materials for the mechanical components of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), potentially leading to advanced performance. High alignment and volume fraction of CNTs in the composites are the prerequisites to achieve such desirable mechanical characteristics. In particular, horizontal CNT alignment in composite films is necessary to enable high longitudinal moduli of the composites which is crucial for the performance of microactuators. A practical process has been developed to transfer CNT arrays from vertical to horizontal alignment which is followed by in situ wetting, realign and pressurized consolidation processes, which lead to a high CNT volume fraction in the range of 46-63%. As a result, SU8 epoxy composite films reinforced with horizontally aligned CNTs and a high volume faction of CNTs have been achieved with outstanding mechanical characteristics. The transverse modulus of the composite films has been characterised through nanoindentation and the longitudinal elastic modulus has been investigated. An experimental transverse modulus of 9.6 GPa and an inferred longitudinal modulus in the range of 460-630 GPa have been achieved, which demonstrate effective CNT reinforcement in the SU8 matrix.  相似文献

In this study, a new method is introduced for fabricating carbon nanotube (CNT) paper, in which the solvent is sprayed on the CNT sheet while it is wound on a rotating mandrel. As the solvent evaporated, the capillary force pulls CNT closer together, resulting in a CNT paper with a high degree of alignment and a high packing density. Three batches of multi-walled CNTs with different wall thicknesses, tube diameters and lengths are utilized for synthesizing highly oriented CNT papers. It is found that CNTs with smallest diameter of 8 nm form strongest CNT paper with a tensile strength of 563 MPa and a tensile modulus of 15 GPa, while that made with CNTs of 10 nm diameter shows the highest electrical conductivity of 5.5 × 104 S/m.  相似文献

Carbon nanotube (CNT)-grafted carbon fibers (CFs) have emerged as new reinforcements for improving the mechanical properties of CF-reinforced composites but such enhancement in macroscale composites has not been realized. This paper reports a facile method for preparing CNT-grafted CFs and improving the tensile strength of their composites. A CNT/polyacrylonitrile solution was sprayed onto the surface of the CF woven fabrics, and the CNTs were grafted by a thermal treatment at 300 °C. CNT-grafted CF composites were fabricated using the CNT-grafted CF woven fabrics using a vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process with epoxy resin. The CNT-grafted CF composite exhibited 22% enhancement in the tensile strength compared to that of the pristine CF composite. Fracture surfaces of the CNT-grafted CF composites showed that the grafted CNTs obstructed the propagation of micro-cracks and micro-delamination around the CFs and also yarn boundaries, resulting in improved tensile strength of CNT-grafted CF composites.  相似文献

For practical application of carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymer composites, it is critical to produce the composites at high speed and large scale. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with large diameter (∼45 nm) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used to increase the processing speed of a recently developed spraying winding technique. The effect of the different winding speed and sprayed solution concentration to the performance of the composite films were investigated. The CNT/PVA composites exhibit tensile strength of up to 1 GPa, and modulus of up to 70 GPa, with a CNT weight fraction of 53%. In addition, an electrical conductivity of 747 S/cm was obtained for the CNT/PVA composites. The good mechanical and electrical properties are attributed to the uniform CNTs and PVA matrix integration and the high degree of tube alignment.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes reinforced pure Al (CNT/Al) composites were produced by ball-milling and powder metallurgy. Microstructure and its evolution of the mixture powders and the fabricated composites were examined and the mechanical properties of the composites were tested. It was indicated that the CNTs were gradually dispersed into the Al matrix as ball-milling time increased and achieved a uniform dispersion after 6 h ball-milling. Further increasing the ball-milling time to 8–12 h resulted in serious damage to the CNTs. The tensile tests showed that as the ball-milling time increased, the tensile and yield strengths of the composites increased, while the elongation increased first and then decreased. The strengthening of CNTs increased significantly as the ball-milling time increased to 6 h, and then decreased when further increasing the ball-milling time. The yield strength of the composite with 6 h ball-milling increased by 42.3% compared with the matrix.  相似文献

The effects of carbon nanotube (CNT) inclusion on cyclic fatigue behavior and the tensile properties of polyurethane (PU) composites have been studied. Tension–tension cyclic fatigue tests were conducted at various load levels (30–50 MPa) to establish the relationship between stress and the number of cycles to failure (S–N curves). The tensile energy to break PU composites was enhanced up to 38% by using a low amount of CNTs. In addition, the incorporation of CNTs increased the fatigue life of PU in the high-stress amplitude, low-cycle regime by up to 248%. Micrographs show highly dispersed CNTs and indicate the key mechanisms for enhancement in fatigue life such as CNT crack-bridging and pull-out. The tensile-tensile fatigue properties obtained in this work show that PU systems can outperform epoxy systems widely used in structural applications.  相似文献

The main properties of epoxy composites reinforced with aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been studied. The alignment was carried out in a specific designed device applying a weak magnetic field (0.3 T) with permanent magnets. CNTs were modified with magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4) functionalized, in a one-stage-process which does not require use of strong acids or aggressive treatments which could affect the structural integrity of CNTs. The study by transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were closely bonded over CNT surfaces. The thermo-mechanical and tensile properties of composites measured were higher than neat epoxy resin and were similar for both composites: reinforced with neat CNTs and magnetite–CNT hybrid nanofillers. The electrical behaviour indicates a high anisotropy for aligned composites, showing an increase of one order of magnitude for the electrical conductivity in the direction of aligned nanotubes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Polyaniline (PAN) composites filled with nanotube were prepared by twin-screw extruder in order to study the influence of PE reinforcing effect on the mechanical behaviour of the nanotube/polyaniline (PAN) composites. The mechanical property tests of the composites with and without PE were performed. The tensile and flexural strength of nanotube/polyaniline (PAN) composites with polyethylene (PE) was improved. In conclusion, the addition of PE favoured the improvement of the higher interface strength and so had good effect on improving the tensile and flexural properties of the composites. The dielectric strength was slightly increased with the PE content increasing and then decreased gradually. The hybrid film with 2 wt.% of PE shows the dielectric strength of 199 MV/m, which is about 6% higher than that of nanotube/polyaniline (PAN) film (188 MV/m).  相似文献

Carbon nanotube (CNT)–reinforced polylactide (PLA) nanocomposites were prepared using a melt compounding process employing a twin-screw extruder. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of PLA/CNT nanocomposites according to Avrami’s theory were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry in the temperature range 90–120 °C. There was a significant dependence of CNT on the crystallization behavior of the PLA matrix. The incorporation of CNT improved effectively the crystallization rate of PLA/CNT nanocomposites through heterogeneous nucleation. The nucleating effect of CNTs which increased the number of nucleation sites and decreased the average spherulite size was confirmed using polarized optical microscopy. The rheological properties of the PLA/CNT nanocomposites were also investigated. Changes in the microstructure of the PLA/CNT nanocomposites occurred by incorporating CNT. Furthermore, the tensile strength/modulus and thermal stability of PLA/CNT nanocomposites were enhanced when a very small quantity of CNT was added. This research accounts for the effect of CNTs, which significantly influenced the isothermal behavior, thermal stability, mechanical, and rheological properties of the PLA/CNT nanocomposites, providing a design guide for PLA/CNT nanocomposites in industrial fields.  相似文献
