Examining the impact of off-task multi-tasking with technology on real-time classroom learning

The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of multi-tasking with digital technologies while attempting to learn from real-time classroom lectures in a university setting. Four digitally-based multi-tasking activities (texting using a cell-phone, emailing, MSN messaging and Facebook™) were compared to 3 control groups (paper-and-pencil note-taking, word-processing note-taking and a natural use of technology condition) over three consecutive lectures. Comparisons indicated that participants in the Facebook™ and MSN conditions performed more poorly than those in the paper-and-pencil use control. Follow-up analyses were required to accommodate the substantial number of students who failed to comply with the limited use of technology specified by their assigned conditions. These analyses indicated that participants who did not use any technologies in the lectures outperformed students who used some form of technology. Consistent with the cognitive bottleneck theory of attention (Welford, 1967) and contrary to popular beliefs, attempting to attend to lectures and engage digital technologies for off-task activities can have a detrimental impact on learning.

Keeping technology at bay in the classroom [technology invasion]

A New York Times article cited research that compared the types of issues facing teachers today with those of 50 or 60 years ago. The article concluded that today's teachers have to deal with a much less kinder and gentler group of students than in the past, probably a reflection of the less kind, less gentle society in which we live. For the most part, these types of problems are not yet overwhelming higher education classrooms in the way they seem to at lower levels of public education. But there is a new phenomenon that really is affecting classroom management in higher education, and that is the invasion of technology.     

Access Grid technology in classroom and research environments

Global communication is essential to industry, research and education. The Access Grid (AG) is a suite of hardware, software, and tools to facilitate communication and collaboration over the Internet. These resources are used at over 500 institutions worldwide to support group-to-group interactions across the Grid including collaborative research work sessions, tutorials, lectures, large-scale distributed meetings and training. This paper will provide an overview of the technology to encourage professionals to integrate benefits and tools of the Grid into their instruction and research. Furthermore, this paper will compare this new technology to more traditional videoconferencing and distributed collaborative working environments. Lastly, it will present issues and challenges that must be addressed to incorporate this momentous technology within the classroom and for collaboration throughout the world.

Teaching competencies for technology integration in the classroom

Abstract   There is growing interest in the integration of technology into the classroom. A range of initiatives have been launched to develop in-service teacher training processes that will strengthen this integration. In the present paper, we systematize the findings of a large selection of studies on this topic, focusing on domains and competencies linked to teacher training propositions for technology integration. Our main result is the presentation of six such domains that have been proposed in the existing literature: instrumental/technological, pedagogical/curricular, didactic/methodological, evaluative/investigative, communicational/relational and personal/attitudinal. A set of teaching competencies for each domain is also identified. These domains and competencies together form the bases for creating a technology integration training model.

Connecting Design with Code

Jon Bentley wrote his thesis on divide-and-conquer algorithms and came to greatly admire C.A.R. Hoare's original quicksort algorithm. Yet for years, Bentley "tiptoed around its innermost loop" because he didn't understand it (Beautiful Code, O'Reilly, 2007). It was only after he implemented his own quicksort based on an elegant partitioning scheme for programming Pearls (Addison-Wesley, 1999) that he truly understood the reason for that inner loop. He also trimmed the original bulkier algorithm to a mere dozen tight lines of code. Code clutter and unnecessary complexity can obscure a design. However, connecting design decisions to code won't happen unless developers embrace the practice of writing code as if expressing design intent matters.
