Reinforcing concrete with a combination of steel and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars promises favorable strength, serviceability, and durability. To verify its promise and to support design of concrete structures with this hybrid type of reinforcement, we have experimentally and theoretically investigated the load-deflection behavior of concrete beams reinforced with hybrid GFRP and steel bars. Eight beams, including two control beams reinforced with only steel or only GFRP bars, were tested. The amount of reinforcement and the ratio of GFRP to steel were the main parameters investigated. Hybrid GFRP/steel-reinforced concrete beams with normal effective reinforcement ratios exhibited good ductility, serviceability, and load carrying capacity. Comparisons between the experimental results and the predictions from theoretical analysis showed that the models we adopted could adequately predict the load carrying capacity, deflection, and crack width of hybrid GFRP/steel-reinforced concrete beams.  相似文献

The behaviors of simply and continuously supported beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are presented in this paper. The experimental testing program included seven simple rectangular beams and seven continuous T-section beams. Reinforcing bars and stirrups were made of steel, carbon, or glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP). It was concluded that the use of GFRP stirrups increased the shear deformation, and as a result deflection increased. Also, GFRP stirrups changed the failure mode from flexural to shear or flexural-shear, depending on the type of reinforcement bars (FRP or steel). Furthermore, the use of FRP reinforcement in continuous beams increased deformation. This increase remained small and acceptable at the service load level, but significantly increased near failure. While different FRP reinforcement arrangements were found to have the same load capacity as steel reinforcements in conventional beams, failure modes and ductility differed. Failure mode was governed by both the type of reinforcing bars and the type of stirrups. Additionally, the dowel effect influences the load carrying capacity of FRP reinforced continuous beams. A method for evaluating the ductility is presented. The ratio of absorbed energy at failure to the total energy, “energy ratio,” was used as a measure of ductility. Based on this definition, a classification of ductile, semiductile, and brittle behavior is suggested. The theoretical results obtained using the suggested method were substantiated experimentally. The continuous beams experienced higher “energy ratios” than did simple beams.  相似文献

Continuous concrete beams are commonly used elements in structures such as parking garages and overpasses, which might be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the application of deicing salts. The use of the fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) bars having no expansive corrosion product in these types of structures has become a viable alternative to steel bars to overcome the steel-corrosion problems. However, the ability of FRP materials to redistribute loads and moments in continuous beams is questionable due to the linear-elastic behavior of such materials up to failure. This paper presents the experimental results of four reinforced concrete beams with rectangular cross section of 200×300?mm continuous over two spans of 2,800 mm each. The material and the amount of longitudinal reinforcement were the main investigated parameters in this study. Two beams were reinforced with glass FRP (GFRP) bars in to different configurations while one beam was reinforced with carbon FRP bars. A steel-reinforced continuous concrete beam was also tested to compare the results. The experimental results showed that moment redistribution in FRP-reinforced continuous concrete beams is possible if the reinforcement configuration is chosen properly. Increasing the GFRP reinforcement at the midspan section compared to middle support section had positive effects on reducing midspan deflections and improving load capacity. The test results were compared to the available design models and FRP codes. It was concluded that the Canadian Standards Association Code (CSA/S806-02) could reasonably predict the failure load of the tested beams; however, it fails to predict the failure location.  相似文献

Continuous concrete beams are structural elements commonly used in structures that might be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the application of deicing salts, such as bridge overpasses and parking garages. In such structures, reinforcing continuous concrete beams with the noncorrodible fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is beneficial to avoid steel corrosion. However, the linear-elastic behavior of FRP materials makes the ability of continuous beams to redistribute loads and moments questionable. A total of seven full-scale continuous concrete beams were tested to failure. Six beams were reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) longitudinal bars, whereas one was reinforced with steel as control. The specimens have rectangular cross section of 200×300??mm and are continuous over two spans of 2,800?mm each. Both steel and GFRP stirrups were used as transverse reinforcement. The material, spacing, and amount of transverse reinforcement were the primary investigated parameters in this study. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the code equations to calculate the ultimate capacity. The experimental results showed that moment redistribution in FRP-reinforced continuous concrete beams is possible and is improved by increasing the amount of transverse reinforcement. Also, beams reinforced with GFRP stirrups illustrated similar performance compared with their steel-reinforced counterparts.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the shear strength, Vc, of intermediate length (2.5 < a∕d < 6) simply supported concrete beams subjected to four-point monotonic loading and reinforced with deformed, glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcement bars. Six different overreinforced GFRP designs, ρ > ρb, were tested with three replicate beams per design. All samples failed as a result of diagonal-tension shear. Measured shear strengths at failure are compared with theoretical predictions calculated according to traditional steel-reinforced concrete procedures and recently published expressions intended for beams reinforced with GFRP. Recommendations are made regarding the adequacy of shear strength prediction equations for GFRP-reinforced members. The study concludes that shear capacity is significantly overestimated by the “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary” (ACI 318-99) expression for, Vc, as a result of the large crack widths, small compression block, and reduced dowel action in GFRP-reinforced flexural members. Shear strength was found to be independent of the amount of longitudinal GFRP reinforcement. A simplified empirical equation for predicting the ultimate shear strength of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP is endorsed.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate the role of each layer of reinforcement on the behavior of concrete bridge deck slabs reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. Four full-scale concrete deck slabs of 3,000?mm length by 2,500?mm width and 200?mm depth were constructed and tested in the laboratory. One deck slab was reinforced with top and bottom mats of glass FRP bars. Two deck slabs had only a bottom reinforcement mat with different reinforcement ratios in the longitudinal direction, while the remaining deck slab was constructed with plain concrete without any reinforcement. The deck slabs were supported on two steel girders spaced at 2,000?mm center to center and were tested to failure under a central concentrated load. The three reinforced concrete slabs had very similar behavior and failed in punching shear mode at relatively high load levels, whereas the unreinforced slab behaved differently and failed at a very low load level. The experimental punching capacities of the reinforced slabs were compared to the theoretical predictions provided by ACI 318-05, ACI 440.1R-06, and a model proposed by the writers. The tests on the four deck slabs showed that the bottom transverse reinforcement layer has the major influence on the behavior and capacity of the tested slabs. In addition, the ACI 318-05 design method slightly overestimated the punching shear strength of the tested slabs. The ACI 440.1R-06 design method yielded very conservative predictions whereas the proposed method provided reasonable yet conservative predictions.  相似文献

Flexural behavior and serviceability performance of 24 full-scale concrete beams reinforced with carbon-, glass-, and aramid-fiber-reinforced-polymer (FRP) bars are investigated. The beams were 3,300?mm long with a rectangular cross section of 200?mm in width and 300?mm in depth. Sixteen beams were reinforced with carbon-FRP bars, four beams were reinforced with glass-FRP bars, two beams were reinforced with aramid-FRP bars, and two were reinforced with steel, serving as control specimens. Two types of FRP bars with different surface textures were considered: sand-coated bars and ribbed-deformed bars. The beams were tested to failure in four-point bending over a clear span of 2,750?mm. The test results are reported in terms of deflection, crack-width, strains in concrete and reinforcement, flexural capacity, and mode of failure. An experimental and analytical study is conducted in order to investigate the flexural behavior of masonry beams that are internally reinforced using glass fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRP) rebars. Seven reinforced masonry beams with 4.0- and 2.4-m spans were tested under four-point bending setup. The beams were loaded monotonically up to failure. One had two courses of hollow concrete masonry units and the remaining six beams had three courses. Two masonry beams were reinforced using conventional steel rebars and were considered as the control specimens. The remaining five beams were internally reinforced using GFRP rods with different reinforcement ratios. Beams were detailed to have sufficient shear reinforcement such that they do not fail in shear. Flexural capacity, deformation, curvature, and strains of the tested GFRP-reinforced and steel-reinforced masonry beams were compared and discussed. Using the acquired data from the experimental and analytical studies, effectiveness of GFRP rods as internal reinforcement for concrete masonry beams is demonstrated.  相似文献

The design of fiber-reinforced polymer reinforced concrete (FRP-RC) is typically governed by serviceability limit state requirements rather than ultimate limit state requirements as conventional reinforced concrete is. Thus, a method is needed that can predict the expected service load deflections of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced members with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Nine methods of deflection calculation, including methods used in ACI 440.1R-03, and a proposed new formula in the next issue of this design guide, CSA S806-02 and ISIS M03-01, are compared to the experimental deflection of 197 beams and slabs tested by other investigators. These members are reinforced with aramid FRP, glass FRP, or carbon FRP bars, have different reinforcement ratios, geometric and material properties. All members were tested under monotonically applied load in four point bending configuration. The objective of the analysis in this paper is to determine a method of deflection calculation for FRP RC members, which is the most suitable for serviceability criteria. The analysis revealed that both the modulus of elasticity of FRP and the relative reinforcement ratio play an important role in the accuracy of the formulas.  相似文献

The development/splice strength and the pullout local bond stress-slip response of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars in tension were experimentally investigated using beam specimens and pullout specimens, respectively. Two types of 12-mm (0.47-in.)-diameter GFRP bars were evaluated, namely, thread wrapped and ribbed. The test parameters included the concrete cover, the splice length, and the area of steel confinement for the beam specimens, and the concrete compressive strength for the pullout specimens. Companion steel reinforced beams were also tested for comparison. All beam specimens reinforced with thread-wrapped GFRP bars experienced pullout mode of bond failure, while all specimens reinforced with ribbed GFRP bars or steel bars experienced splitting mode of bond failure. It was found that the bond strength of FRP bars is largely dependent on the surface conditions of the bars. The pullout local bond stress-slip response of ribbed GFRP bars is intrinsically similar to that of steel bars reported in the literature. The bond strength of both types of GFRP bars investigated was about two to three times lower than that of steel bars. Predictions of the development/splice strength of GFRP bars in accordance with the ACI Committee 440 guidelines were unconservative in comparison with the test data. Also, in contradiction with the current ACI 440 report, the use of transverse confining reinforcement increased the bond strength by a sizable 15–30%.  相似文献

This paper presents the experimental results of the first phase of a study undertaken at the American University of Beirut to examine the effectiveness of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wraps to confine steel reinforcement in a tension lap splice region anchored in high-strength reinforced-concrete beams. Seven beam specimens were constructed. The specimens were reinforced on the tension side with three deformed bars spliced at midspan. The splice region was devoid of any transverse reinforcement to allow a full examination of the FRP wrap contribution. Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets were used. The main test variables were the GFRP configuration in the splice region (one strip, two strips, or a continuous strip), and the number of layers of the GFRP wraps placed around the splice region (one layer or two layers). All GFRP wraps were U-shaped. Except for the epoxy adhesive, no other anchorage mechanism or bonding procedure was applied for the GFRP wraps on the concrete beam. Following the application of the GFRP wraps, the beams were tested in positive bending. The test results demonstrated that GFRP wraps were effective in enhancing the bond strength and ductility of failure mode of the tension lap splices, especially when continuous strips were applied over the splice region.  相似文献

The results of an experimental and numerical study of the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) laminates are presented in this paper. In the experimental program, ten strengthened beams and two unstrengthened beams are tested to failure under monotonic loading. A number of external GFRP laminate layers and bond length of GFRP laminates in shear span are taken as the test variables. Longitudinal GFRP strain development and interfacial shear stress distribution from the tests are examined. The experimental results generally showed that both flexural strength and stiffness of reinforced concrete beams could be increased by such a bonding technique. In the numerical study, an eight-node interface element is developed to simulate the interface behavior between the concrete and GFRP laminates. This element is implemented into the MARC software package for the finite-element analyses of GFRP laminate strengthened reinforced concrete beams. Reasonably good correlations between experimental and numerical results are achieved.  相似文献

The Val-Alain Bridge, located in the Municipality of Val-Alain on Highway 20 East, crosses over Henri River in Québec, Canada. The bridge is a slab-on-girder type with a skew angle of 20° over a single span of 49.89?m and a total width of 12.57?m. The bridge has four simply supported steel girders spaced at 3,145?mm. The deck slab is a 225-mm-thick concrete slab, with semi-integral abutments, continuous over the steel girders with an overhang of 1,570?mm on each side. The concrete deck slab and the bridge barriers were reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars utilizing high-performance concrete. The Val-Alain Bridge is the Canada’s first concrete bridge deck totally reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars. Using such nonmetallic reinforcement in combination with high-performance concrete leads to an expected service life of more than 75?years. The bridge is well instrumented with electrical resistance strain gauges and fiber-optic sensors at critical locations to record internal strain data. Also, the bridge was tested for service performance using calibrated truckloads. Design concepts, construction details, and results of the first series of live load field tests are presented.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental study on the bond behavior of longitudinal reinforcements in the hanging region (i.e., the part of the beam outside the support) of a simply supported reinforced concrete beam. Twenty-three reinforced concrete beams were tested to failure. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars were used as longitudinal reinforcements in place of ordinary steel bars. The main test variables were (1) stirrup ratio in the hanging region; (2) stirrup ratio in the shear span; and (3) bond length in the hanging region. The test results showed that, even though the beam had a sufficient stirrup ratio in the shear span, bond-splitting failure occurred in the shear span of the beam with insufficient bond length in the hanging region. Based on the test results, the provision of ACI and AIJ codes on the additional anchorage length in the hanging region was evaluated, and a model for predicting tension force at the support was presented.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the flexural performance of simply supported concrete beams subjected to four-point monotonic loading and reinforced with a 2D fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) grid. The main parameter of the study is the amount of longitudinal FRP reinforcement. With respect to a balanced strain condition, three underreinforced and two overreinforced FRP designs were tested with three identical beams per design. Laboratory recorded load-deflection, failure mode, cracking behavior, and reinforcement strain data are compared with theoretical predictions calculated according to traditional steel-reinforced concrete procedures. The study concludes that, with respect to ACI 318-95, flexural capacity is accurately predicted, but shear strength is not. Deflection compatibility between test results and ACI predictions employing the Branson effective moment of inertia was dependent on the percentage of longitudinal reinforcement. In general, observed flexural stiffness was less than that predicted by Branson's equation. A moment-curvature deflection procedure employing a bilinear concrete model compared very well with measured deflections. Finally, the grid configuration provides an effective force transfer mechanism. Cracking occurred at transverse bar locations only, and FRP tensile rupture was achieved with no observed deterioration in force transfer mechanics.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the shear strength of one-way concrete slabs reinforced with different types of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. A total of eight full-size slabs were constructed and tested. The slabs were 3,100?mm?long×?1,000?mm?wide×200?mm?deep. The test parameters were the type and size of FRP reinforcing bars and the reinforcement ratio. Five slabs were reinforced with glass FRP and three were reinforced with carbon FRP bars. The slabs were tested under four-point bending over a simply supported clear span of 2,500 mm and a shear span of 1,000 mm. All the test slabs failed in shear before reaching the design flexural capacity. The experimental shear strengths were compared with some theoretical predictions, including the JSCE recommendations, the CAN/CSA-S806-02 code, and the ACI 440.1R-03 design guidelines. The results indicated that the ACI 440.1R-03 design method for predicting the concrete shear strength of FRP slabs is very conservative. Better predictions were obtained by both the CAN/CSA-S806-02 code and the JSCE design recommendations.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of experimental and theoretical investigations that study the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes (RCFFTs) beams. The experimental program consists of 10 circular beams [6 RCFFT and 4 control reinforced concrete (RC) beams] with a total length of 2,000?mm, tested under four-point bending load. The experimental results were used to review and verify the applicability of various North American code provisions and some available equations in the literature to predict deflection of RCFFT beams. The measured deflections and the experimental values of the effective moment of inertia were analyzed and compared with those predicted using available models. The results of the analysis indicated that the behavior of steel and FRP-RCFFT beams under the flexural load was significantly different than that of steel and FRP-RC members. This is attributed to the confining effect of the FRP tubes and their axial contribution. This confining behavior in turn enhanced the overall flexural behavior and improved the tension stiffening of RCFFT beams. For that, the predicted tension stiffening of steel and FRP-RCFFT beams using the conventional equations (steel or FRP-RC member) underestimates the flexural response; therefore, the predicted deflections are overestimated. Based on the analysis of the test results, the Branson’s equation for the effective moment of inertia of RC structures is modified, and new equations are developed to accurately predict the deflection of concrete-filled FRP tube (CFFT) beams reinforced with steel or FRP bars.  相似文献

This study investigates the shear behavior of concrete beams reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement. Six beams were subjected to two successive phases of testing. Half of the beams were reinforced in flexure with conventional steel reinforcement, while the other half were reinforced with glass fiber bars. Different shear span to depth ratios, ranging from 1.1 to 3.3, were analyzed in order to study the variation in the shear behavior of beams characterized by different types of shear failure. No shear reinforcement was provided in the first phase of testing, while in the second phase, just enough glass and carbon shear reinforcement was provided to enable failure due to shear. The results of these tests are presented and compared to predictions according to the design recommendations proposed by the ACI and the Institution of Structural Engineers, U.K. The results of this study show that these approaches, which are based on modifications of equations derived for steel reinforcement, underestimate the contribution of the concrete and the shear reinforcement to the total shear capacity of FRP RC beams. It is shown that both approaches can be modified to become less conservative.  相似文献

A model is proposed to predict the time to failure of reinforced concrete beams in a fire. The model is developed specifically to predict the lifetime of beams reinforced with glass fiber reinforced plastic rebar, but is applicable to beams with any form of reinforcement. The model is based on the calculations for flexural capacity and shear capacity of beams embedded within ACI design codes where time and temperature dependent values for rebar modulus and strength and concrete strength replace the static design values. The base equations are modified to remove safety factors and where necessary the temperature induced reductions in strength for concrete and steel are derived using the equations presented by EUROCODE 2. In order to validate the model it was used to predict the failure times of steel rebar reinforced beams that had been documented in the literature. There was excellent agreement between the model and the reported lifetimes for these conventional beams. The model was applied to predict the lifetimes of two beams that had been manufactured and tested for destruction in a fire by the research group. The model predicted that the failure mode of the beams would be because of rebar rupture as opposed to the design condition of concrete crushing and this was confirmed by the experimental test results. The model provided reasonable agreement with experimental results with a lifetime of 108?min predicted based on flexural failure and 94 and 128?min observed in the experiments.  相似文献

Repair and rehabilitation of infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for bridges due to material deterioration and limited capacity to accommodate current load levels. An experimental program was undertaken to study the flexural behavior of creosote-treated sawn Douglas fir timber beams strengthened with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. Twenty-two half-scale and four full-scale timber beams strengthened with GFRP were tested to failure. The percent reinforcement ratios were between 0.27 and 0.82%. Additional unreinforced timber beams were tested as control specimens. The results have shown that using the proposed experimental technique changed the failure mode from brittle tension to compression failure, and flexural strength increased by 18 to 46%. Research findings indicate the use of near-surface GFRP bars overcomes the effect of local defects in the timber and enhances the bending strength of the members. Based on the experimental results, an analytical model is proposed to predict the flexural capacity of both unreinforced and GFRP-reinforced timber beams. The article also reviews implementation of the proposed technique for strengthening a timber bridge near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  相似文献
