The complex shear moduli of the segmented polyurethane Estane 5703p, Livermore explosive (LX)‐14, and plastic bonded explosive (PBX)‐9501, which use this polymer as a binder, have been investigated. Segmented polyurethanes, such as Estane 5703, contain microphase‐separated hard segments in a rubbery matrix of soft segments. LX‐14 is composed of 95.5% 1,3,5,7‐tetranitroazacyclooctane (HMX) explosive with 4.5% Estane 5703 binder. PBX‐9501 is composed of 94.9% HMX, 2.5% Estane 5703p binder, 2.5% nitroplasticizer (NP), and about 0.1% antioxidant Irganox 1010. In the temperature range from ?150 to 120°C, two relaxations were observed as peaks in the loss modulus and tangent delta in Estane 5703p and LX‐14. A third relaxation was found in PBX‐9501. The low temperature relaxation associated with vitrification of the poly(ester urethane) soft segment occurred in the shear loss modulus (G″) at ?29 and ?26°C in Estane and LX‐14, respectively, at 1 Hz. In PBX‐9501 the Estane soft segment glass transition peak, Tg(SS), in the loss modulus occurred at ?40 ± 3°C at 1 Hz. The reduction in soft segment glass transition in PBX‐9501 is clear evidence of plasticization of the soft segment by NP. The apparent activation energy of the maximum in the loss modulus for LX‐14 and PBX‐9501 over the frequency range from 0.1 to 10 Hz was 230 kJ/mole (55 kcal/mole). The hard segment glass transition, Tg(HS), was observed as a peak in the loss modulus at about 70°C. In LX‐14 the transition was observed at lower temperatures (56–58°C at 1 Hz) depending on thermal history. There was a low temperature shoulder on the Tg(HS) of Estane 5703 associated with soft segment crystallinity. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) was used to verify the Tg(HS) in Estane and 50/50 mixtures of Estane with NP. In PBX‐9501 the hard segment glass transition occurred between 65 and 72°C. The presence of NP in PBX‐9501 gave rise to a new transition, Teu(NP), between 8 and 15°C. This peak is believed to be associated with the eutectic melting of the plasticizer. Returns of fielded PBX‐9501 that were 6 and 11 years old were also measured. Small variations in Tg(SS) and the rubber plateau modulus were observed in these aged samples, consistent with migration of plasticizer and/or very low levels of chain scission. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Though glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) is a well‐known and promising energetic polymer, propellants based on it suffer from poor mechanical and low‐temperature properties. To overcome these problems, plasticized GAP‐based copolymeric binders were prepared and investigated through the incorporation of flexible‐structural polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polycaprolactone (PCL) into a binder recipe under a Desmodur N‐100 polyisocyanate (N‐100)/isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) (2 : 1, wt. ratio) mixed curative system. The nitrate esters (NEs) or GAP oligomer were used as energetic plasticizers at various ratios to the polymers. The GAP/PCL binders held the plasticizers much more than the GAP/PEG binders did. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of segmented copolymeric binders were more dependent on the plasticizer level than the PEG or PCL content. The increase in the plasticizer content decreased the mechanical strength and modulus of binders, while the change of strain was modest. Finally, the NE plasticized GAP‐based solid propellants showed enhanced mechanical and thermal properties by the incorporation of PEG or PCL. The properties of GAP/PCL propellants were superior to those of GAP/PEG propellants.  相似文献

Nanocomposites of poly(lactide) (PLA) and the PLA plasticized with diglycerine tetraacetate (PL‐710) and ethylene glycol oligomer containing organo‐modified montmorillonites (ODA‐M and PGS‐M) by the protonated ammonium cations of octadecylamine and poly(ethylene glycol) stearylamine were prepared by melt intercalation method. In the X‐ray diffraction analysis, the PLA/ODA‐M and plasticized PLA/ODA‐M composites showed a clear enlargement of the difference of interlayer spacing between the composite and clay itself, indicating the formation of intercalated nanocomposite. However, a little enlargement of the interlayer spacing was observed for the PLA/PGS‐M and plasticized PLA/PGS‐M composites. From morphological studies using transmission electron microscopy, a finer dispersion of clay was observed for PLA/ODA‐M composite than PLA/PGS‐M composite and all the composites using the plasticized PLA. The PLA and PLA/PL‐710 composites containing ODA‐M showed a higher tensile strength and modulus than the corresponding composites with PGS‐M. The PLA/PL‐710 (10 wt %) composite containing ODA‐M showed considerably higher elongation at break than the pristine plasticized PLA, and had a comparable tensile modulus to pure PLA. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composites decreased with increasing plasticizer. The addition of the clays did not cause a significant increase of Tg. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) and proton conductivities of polyimides synthesized from naphthalene‐1,4,5,8‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), 2,2′‐benzidinedisulfonic acid (BDSA), 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylether‐2,2′‐disulfonic acid (ODADS), and non‐sulfonated diamine monomers have been predicted using molecular dynamics simulations. The specific volumes for two dry and four hydrated NTDA‐based polyimides were plotted versus temperatures above and below Tgs to obtain the glass transition temperatures. The simulation results suggest that the ODADS‐based polyimide membranes exhibit lower Tgs and thus better mechanical properties than the BDSA‐based polyimides, which may be attributed to the high mobility of backbones of ODADS as supported by the vectorial autocorrelation function (VACF) results of this study. In addition, comparison of the simulated Tgs for the dry and hydrated ODADS‐based polyimides has shown that water content in polyimides can affect their Tgs. The proton conductivities of a representative polyimide in both dry and hydrated conditions have been obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of the proton and hydronium ion diffusion. The simulated conductivity for the hydrated NTDA‐ODADS/BAPB cell is in reasonable agreement with the experimental value obtained from the AC impedance method. The relationship between the chemical composition, chain flexibility, and the glass transition and proton conduction of these NTDA‐based polyimides was explored on the basis of VACF and pair correlation function analysis. Maleimide‐functionalized benzoxazine is copolymerized with epoxy to improve toughness and processibility without compromising the thermal properties. The incorporation of maleimide functionality into the benzoxazine monomer results in a high performance polymer. All three possible polymerization reactions are confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy. While maleimide‐functionalized benzoxazine has a glass transition temperature, Tg, of 252°C, a further 25°C increase of Tg is observed when copolymerized with epoxy. The flexural properties are also measured, and the copolymers exhibit a flexural modulus of 4.2–5.0 GPa. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 1670–1677, 2006  相似文献

Melting gels are hybrid gels that have the ability to soften and flow at around 100°C for some combinations of mono‐ and di‐substituted alkoxysiloxanes, where substitutions are either all aromatic or all aliphatic. In this study, melting gels were prepared using phenyltriethoxysilane (PhTES) and dimethyldiethoxysilane (DMDES), meaning both an aromatic and aliphatic substitution. Differential scanning calorimetry was performed to identify glass‐transition temperatures, and thermal gravimetric analysis coupled with differential thermal analysis (TGA‐DTA) was performed to measure weight loss. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg) ranged from ?61°C to +5.6°C, which are between the values in the methyl only system, where all Tg values are less than 0°C, and those values in the phenyl only system, where Tg values are greater than 0°C. The Tg decreased with an increase in the DMDES fraction. Below 450°C, the gels lost little weight, but around 600°C there was a drop in weight. This temperature is lower than the temperature for gels prepared with only aromatic substitutions, but higher than that for gels prepared with only aliphatic substitutions. Final heat treatment was carried out at 150°C for the gel with 80%PhTES‐20%DMDES (in mol%), and the consolidation temperature increased with increasing DMDES content to 205°C for the gel with 50%PhTES‐50%DMDES. After this heat treatment, the melting gels no longer soften.  相似文献

Solid composite propellants contain 80–90% of a crystalline oxidizer like ammonium perchlorate and powdery metallic fuel like aluminum with 10 to 15% organic binders like HTPB or CTPB, to bind the solids together and maintain the shape under severe stress and strain environment. Also, the propellant must not crack or become brittle at subzero temperatures. Formulating and processing of the highly filled composite propellants are difficult tasks and need a thorough understanding of rheology, even apart from a knowledge of propellant chemistry, particulate technology, manufacturing methods, and safe handling of explosives and hazardous materials. The flow behavior or rheology of the propellant slurry determines the ingredients and some of the abnormalities of the motor during firing. The propellant viscosity and mechanical properties are determined by the binder system, and the unloading viscosity of the propellant slurry is dependent on the initial viscosity of the binder system, solid loading, particle size, and its distribution, shape, temperature, and pressure. In the present report an attempt is made to study the dependency of viscosity of the HTPB binder system on temperature, plasticizer level (composition), and torque (angular velocity of spindle). The viscosity measurements were made using a Brookfield viscometer model DV III at different plasticizer levels (10–50%), temperatures (30–65°C), and torques (50–100%). The data indicate that the viscosity of HTPB, DOA, and their mixture decreases with increasing temperature and is constant with torque. The Arrhenius equation gives the energy for viscous flow to be ?35 kcal/mol for HTPB. The variation of viscosity with temperature of HTPB/DOA and their mixture follows a mathematical model expressed as where T is the temperature and a1, a2, a3, a4, and a5 are the constants. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A thermally induced shape memory polymer based on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) was produced by curing the ENR with 3‐amino‐1,2,4‐triazole as a crosslinker in the presence of bisphenol‐A as a catalyst. Dynamic mechanical and tensile analysis was conducted to examine the variation of glass transition temperature, stiffness, and extensibility of the vulcanizates with the amount of curatives. Shape memory properties of the ENR vulcanizates were characterized by shape retention and shape recovery. It was revealed that the glass transition temperature of the ENR vulcanizates could be tuned well above room temperature by increasing the amount of curing agents. Also, ENR vulcanizates with Tg higher than ambient temperature showed good shape memory effects under 100% elongation, and the response temperatures of the recovery were well matched with Tg of the samples. In this work, (acrylonitrile‐styrene‐acrylic)/(α‐methylstyrene‐acrylonitrile) copolymer (ASA/α‐MSAN) binary alloy was prepared with different composition ratios via melt blending. This work mainly focused on improving the heat resistance of ASA. According to the results of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, the binary blends exhibited three glass transition temperatures (Tgs) and the shift of the Tgs indicated the partial miscibility of binary blends. This partial miscibility maintained the high Tg of α‐MSAN, which led to the outstanding heat resistance of binary blends. Furthermore, heat distortion temperature also showed that the heat resistance of binary blends was significantly enhanced with the addition of α‐MSAN. However, the introduction of this highly rigid polymer also brought with it the sharp decrease of the impact strength and elongation at break, which is reflected in the morphologies of the blend system obtained via scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the incorporation of α‐MSAN increased the tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus. There were no new groups observed from Fourier‐transform infrared spectra, which means no strong specific intermolecular interactions existed between ASA and α‐MSAN. Moreover, the processibility of the blend system was obviously improved from the results of melt flow rate. J. VINYL ADDIT. TECHNOL., 22:156–162, 2016. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

N‐cyclohexylmaleimide (ChMI) and styrene (St) were polymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) at different St feed content by suspension polymerization method. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the terpolymers were detected by torsional braid analysis (TBA). Two transition peaks in TBA curves of the terpolymers with a high St content illustrated that these terpolymers have a heterogeneous chain structure and the phase separation occurred. The lower transition temperature, Tg1, was assigned to the random St‐MMA components, and the higher transition temperature, Tg2, was assigned to the St‐ChMI units‐rich segments. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) revealed that all the terpolymers showed a two‐step degradation process. The tensile strength of the terpolymers decrease with increasing St content while the impact strength tended to increase slightly. The rheological behavior of the terpolymers was also detected. The result illustrated that the terpolymers showed rheological behavior similar to that of pseudoplastic liquid. The apparent shear viscosity decreased with the increasing of St content. All terpolymers have a higher value of flow n than the poly(MMA‐co‐ChMI). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 918–922, 2006  相似文献

In this work, the fundamental kinetic and structure/property information for a novel phosphorus‐based hardener, bis(4‐aminophenoxy) phosphonate is cured with a range of common epoxy resins such as diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, tri glycidyl p‐amino phenol and tetra glycidyl diamino diphenyl methane (TGDDM) at various cure temperatures. The rate coefficients k1 and k2 for the primary and secondary amine epoxide addition reactions, respectively, were determined and were found to exhibit a positive substitution effect for the TGAP and TGDDM epoxy resins. Etherification or internal cyclization were shown to be important at higher levels of cure conversion, with these reactions being more significant for the TGAP/BAPP system. Some basic structure/property relationships were established between the glass transition temperature (Tg) and epoxide conversion. The master curve obtained for the superimposition of the various cure temperatures for each epoxy demonstrated the independence of the cure mechanism with temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three epoxy‐amine thermoset systems were cured at a low ambient temperature. Evolution of the reaction kinetics and molecular structure during cure at the sub‐glass transition temperature was followed by DSC and chemorheology experiments. The effect of vitrification and the reaction exotherm on curing and final mechanical properties of the epoxy thermosets was determined. Thermomechanical properties of the low‐temperature cured systems depend on the reaction kinetics and volume of the reaction mixture. Curing of the fast‐reacting system in a large volume (12‐mm thick layer) resulted in the material with Tg exceeding the cure temperature by 70–80°C because of an exothermal temperature rise. However, the reaction in a too large volume (50‐mm layer) led to thermal degradation of the network. In contrast, thin layers (1.5 mm) were severely undercured. Well‐cured epoxy thermosets could be prepared at sub‐Tg temperatures by optimizing reaction conditions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 99: 3669–3676, 2006  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to investigate the thermal behavior of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and GAP‐based binders, which are of potential interest for the development of high‐performance energetic propellants. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and decomposition temperature (Td) of pure GAP were found to be −45 and 242°C, respectively. The energy released during decomposition (ΔHd) was measured as 485 cal/g. The effect of the heating rate on these properties was also investigated. Then, to decrease its Tg, GAP was mixed with the plasticizers dioctiladipate (DOA) and bis‐2,2‐dinitropropyl acetal formal (BDNPA/F). The thermal characterization results showed that BDNPA/F is a suitable plasticiser for GAP‐based propellants. Later, GAP was crosslinked by using the curing agent triisocyanate N‐100 and a curing catalyst dibuthyltin dilaurate (DBTDL). The thermal characterization showed that crosslinking increases the Tg and decreases the Td of GAP. The Tg of cured GAP was decreased to sufficiently low temperatures (−45°C) by using BDNPA/F. The decomposition reaction‐rate constants were calculated. It can be concluded that the binder developed by using GAP/N‐100/BDNPA/F/DBTDL may meet the requirements of the properties that makes it useful for future propellant formulations. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A two‐step synthetic procedure is designed for preparing new flame‐retardant methacrylic monomers containing 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO) as a substituent side group. DOPO and methacrylate moieties are linked by linear aliphatic hydrocarbon spacers (3 to 11 carbon atoms). Copolymerization with methyl methacrylate is carried out leading to copolymers containing between 2 and 10 wt% phosphorus. All homo‐ and copolymers exhibit a unique glass transition temperature (Tg ). A new group contribution for DOPO‐based substituent is extracted that leads to reasonable estimations of Tg s of other published polymers. The Fox equation provides a good estimation of Tg s for most copolymers and for physical blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and DOPO. When using monomers having three and four carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon spacer, the Tg of copolymers remains close to that of PMMA over a wide range of composition.  相似文献

Three benzoxazines based on o‐allylphenol and 1,6‐hexamethylenediamine (HDA) or 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) or 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether (DDE) were respectively blended with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) in various weight ratios followed by thermal polymerization to prepare three series of benzoxazine/DGEBA copolymers. With increasing DGEBA content, the peak temperature of the exothermic peaks in the DSC curves shows a systematic increase for the three series of benzoxazine/DGEBA blends. Each copolymer shows a single glass transition temperature (Tg). As the content of DGEBA is increased, Tg reaches a minimum for the copolymer system based on HDA but a maximum for the two systems based on DDM and DDE. For the same benzoxazine/DGEBA weight ratio, copolymers based on DDM and DDE show high Tg values over those based on HDA. The three series of benzoxazine/DGEBA copolymers exhibit a one‐way dual shape memory effect based on Tg, and the shape memory properties of the copolymers under tensile deformation mode vary with the variation of both diamine bridge structure and DGEBA content. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Acetyl tri‐n‐butyl citrate (ATBC) and poly(ethyleneglycol)s (PEGs) with different molecular weights (from 400 to 10000) were used in this study to plasticize poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLA). The thermal and mechanical properties of the plasticized polymer are reported. Both ATBC and PEG are effective in lowering the glass transition (Tg) of PLA up to a given concentration, where the plasticizer reaches its solubility limit in the polymer (50 wt % in the case of ATBC; 15–30 wt %, depending on molecular weight, in the case of PEG). The range of applicability of PEGs as PLA plasticizers is given in terms of PEG molecular weight and concentration. The mechanical properties of plasticized PLA change with increasing plasticizer concentration. In all PLA/plasticizer systems investigated, when the blend Tg approaches room temperature, a stepwise change in the mechanical properties of the system is observed. The elongation at break drastically increases, whereas tensile strength and modulus decrease. This behavior occurs at a plasticizer concentration that depends on the Tg‐depressing efficiency of the plasticizer. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 1731–1738, 2003  相似文献

Blend systems of polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene‐co‐(ethylene‐propylene))‐block‐polystyrene (SEEPS) triblock copolymer with three types of hydrocarbon oil of different molecular weight were prepared. The E″ curves as a function of temperature exhibited two peaks; one peak at low temperature (? ?50°C), arising from the glass transition of the poly[ethylene‐co‐(ethylene‐propylene)] (PEEP) phase and a high temperature peak (? 100°C), arising from the glass transition of the polystyrene (PS) phase. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PEEP phase shifted to lower temperature with increasing oil content. The shifted Tg depended on the types of oil and was lower for the low molecular weight oil. The Tg of PS phase of the present blend system, were found to be constant and independent of the oil content, when molecular weight of the oil is high. However, for the lower molecular weight oil, the Tg of the PS phase also shifted to lower temperatures. This fact indicates that the oil of high molecular weight is merely dissolved in the PS phase. The E′ at (75°C, at which temperature both of PEEP and PS phases are in glassy state, was found to be independent of oil content. In contrast, at 25°C, at which temperature the PEEP phase is in rubbery state, the E′ decreased sharply with increasing oil content. This result indicates that the hydrocarbon oil was a selective solvent in the PEEP phase. It mainly dissolved in the PEEP phase, although slightly dissolved into the PS phase as well, when molecular weight of oil is low. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

The self‐healing behavior of poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) is evaluated below the glass transition temperature Tg. It is found that PVB shows autonomic self‐healing even at room temperature, although Tg is around at 76°C. Furthermore, a large amount of water is found to be adsorbed on the surface of the film. This is attributed to the surface localization of hydroxyl group in PVB, which is confirmed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Since the surface is plasticized by water, the scar applied by a razor blade is healed even in the glassy state of the bulk. Moreover, the healing efficiency is enhanced at high humidity condition, owing to the pronounced plasticizing effect by water. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. This study explores the effect of hydrocarbon liquid on creep behavior of polylactic acid (PLA)‐based plastic. Evolution of the mechanical properties of the material was investigated experimentally by measurement of creep under tensile load. Tensile creep behavior was studied with a constant load over a temperature range from 30 to 50°C using specimens containing different levels of liquid. It was shown that the hydrocarbon liquid diffusion obeys the Fickian law of diffusion. The viscoelastic properties vary with temperature and these properties dramatically decrease above the glass transition temperature (Tg). Significant decreases in modulus and in the peak of tan δ were observed with an increase in liquid concentration at low temperatures. In contrast, at high temperatures, drier material recorded lower storage modulus. However, only small changes of Tg were recorded. Dependence of compliance on temperature was observed in the creep test at all levels of liquid content. With respect to drier samples, it was noted that the high liquid content material had a lower rate of increasing creep strain with temperature. Therefore, at elevated temperatures, higher creep strain of dry specimens was observed compared to those with a higher liquid content. The improvement of creep resistance and stiffening of material at high temperatures can be attributed to the significant increase of crystallinity fraction induced by liquid absorption. Understanding the effect of liquid diffusion in conjunction with temperature provides useful information for assessment of the potential use of this biodegradable plastic in load‐bearing applications exposed to an organic liquid. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tri‐(butanediol‐monobutyrate) citrate (TBBC) as a new plasticizer for poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was synthesized via a two‐step esterification. The chemical structure of TBBC was characterized by 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance. The studies on solubility parameters, transparence, and storage stability indicated the good miscibility between PLA and TBBC. The glass transition, crystallization, thermal, and mechanical properties of PLA plasticized by TBBC were evaluated. With an increase in TBBC content, the glass transition temperature (Tg), melting point (Tm), and the cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) of plasticized PLA gradually shifted to a lower temperature. The elongation at break and flexibility were greatly improved by the addition of TBBC. After 30 days of storage, PLA plasticized with up to 20 wt% of TBBC exhibited good storage stability and remained the original transparence and mechanical properties. The flexibility of PLA/TBBC films can be tuned by changing TBBC content. The corresponding crystalline morphology and structure were investigated by Polarizing optical microscope and X‐ray diffraction as well. This study revealed that TBBC was miscible with PLA and may therefore be a promising plasticizer for PLA‐based packaging materials. POLYM. ENG.
