A series of novel hydrogels were prepared from acrylic acid (AA), N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), and chitosan by photopolymerization. The swelling behavior, gel strength, and drug release behavior of the poly(AA/NVP) copolymeric hydrogels and corresponding interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels were investigated. Results showed that the swelling ratios for the present hydrogels decreased with an increase of NVP content in the gel, but the gel strength increased with an increase of NVP content in the gel. Results also showed that the drug‐release behavior for the gels is related to the ionicity of drug and the swelling ratio of the gel. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Polymers supporting chemicals used in agriculture have recently been developed to overcome the serious environmental problems of conventional agrochemicals. The success of these formulations is based on a suitable choice of polymer support. Degradable polymeric hydrogels are of particular interest. The gradual release of the bioactive agent can be achieved by hydrolytic or enzymatic cleavage of the linking bond. RESULTS: In this context, poly[(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone)‐co‐(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] [poly(NVP‐co‐HEMA)] has been used as a bioactive carrier reagent. Herein, we report a controlled‐release system with the herbicide 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D) using an ultrafiltration system. Hydrolysis was studied by testing the release at various pH values. A high release with poly(NVP‐co‐HEMA)–2,4‐D was observed at pH = 7 and 10 after two days (Z = 2). The release percentage of copolymer–herbicide increased at pH = 10. It showed release values between 79.0 and 94.5%. Poly(NVP‐co‐HEMA)–herbicide can release a bioactive compound in aqueous solution at pH = 3, 7 and 10. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of homogeneous hydrolysis, it is argued that the herbicide release rate depends on the pH of the reaction environment. This functional polymer could be employed as a biodegradable material for applications in agrichemical release. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

This work reports the preparation of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)/N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels by UV‐initiated polymerization in the presence of free radical photoinitiator Darocur 1173 and cationic photoinitiator 4,4′‐dimethyl diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate. The polymerization mechanism was investigated by the formation of gel network. The structure and morphology of the HEMA/NVP IPN hydrogels were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the IPN gels exhibited homogeneous morphology. The dehydration rates of HEMA/NVP IPN hydrogels were examined by the gravimetric method. The results revealed that the hydrogels had a significant improvement of antidehydration ability in comparison with poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) hydrogel embedded physically with poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone)(PVP). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chitosan (CS) grafted poly[(acrylic acid)‐co‐(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] (CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)) at different molar ratios of AA and HEMA, and the associated nanocomposite hydrogels of CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)/mica were synthesized by radical copolymerization. The grafting positions at the amino or hydroxyl groups in the CS were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA) hydrogels were intercalated in the mica and the amount of hydrogel insertion did not affect the spacing of the silicate layers in mica. The higher mica loadings produced a rougher surface of the nanocomposite hydrogel. The water absorbency of the CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)/mica nanocomposite hydrogels decreased with increasing levels of mica loading to a lower level than those of the CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA) hydrogels. Both CS‐g‐poly(AA) and CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA)/mica nanocomposite hydrogels exhibited a higher antiproliferative activity against Staphylococcus aureus than did the neat CS hydrogel with CS‐g‐poly(AA) revealing a very pronounced minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 1.56 mg mL?1. The extent of mica loading in the CS‐g‐poly(AA‐co‐HEMA) nanocomposite hydrogels did not affect the MIC (12.5 mg mL?1). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

A series of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and sodium acrylate (SA50) copolymeric gels were prepared from HEMA and the anionic monomer SA50 with various molar ratios. The influence of SA50 on the copolymeric gels on their swelling behavior in deionized water at different temperatures and various pH buffer solutions was investigated. Results indicated that the poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogels exhibited an overshooting phenomenon in their dynamic swelling behavior. The maximum overshooting value decreased with increasing of the temperature. The same results were also found in the HEMA/SA50 copolymeric gels with a lower SA50 content. On the contrary, the overshooting phenomenon for HEMA/SA50 copolymeric gels with a higher content of SA50 was exhibited only under higher temperature (over 35°C). These copolymer gels were used to assess drug release and drug delivery in this article. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 1360–1371, 2001  相似文献

In this work, biocompatible hydrogel matrices for wound‐dressing materials and controlled drug‐release systems were prepared from poly[hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐poly(ethylene glycol)–methacrylate] [p(HEMA‐co‐PEG–MA] films via UV‐initiated photopolymerization. The characterization of the hydrogels was conducted with swelling experiments, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (differential scanning calorimetry), and contact‐angle studies. The water absorbency of the hydrogel films significantly changed with the change of the medium pH from 4.0 to 7.4. The thermal stability of the copolymer was lowered by an increase in the ratio of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to methacrylate (MA) in the film structure. Contact‐angle measurements on the surface of the p(HEMA‐co‐PEG–MA) films demonstrated that the copolymer gave rise to a significant hydrophilic surface in comparison with the homopolymer of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The blood protein adsorption was significantly reduced on the surface of the copolymer hydrogels in comparison with the control homopolymer of HEMA. Model antibiotic (i.e., minocycline) release experiments were performed in physiological buffer saline solutions with a continuous flow release system. The amount of minocycline release was shown to be dependent on the HEMA/PEG–MA ratio. The hydrogels have good antifouling properties and therefore are suitable candidates for wound dressing and other tissue engineering applications. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of pH‐thermoreversible hydrogels that exhibited volume phase transition was synthesized by various molar ratios of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), acrylamide (AAm), and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The influence of environmental conditions such as temperature and pH value on the swelling behavior of these copolymeric gels was investigated. Results showed that the hydrogels exhibited different equilibrium swelling ratios in different pH solutions. Amide groups could be hydrolyzed to form negatively charged carboxylate ion groups in their hydrophilic polymeric network in response to an external pH variation. The pH sensitivities of these gels also depended on the AAm content in the copolymeric gels; thus the greater the AAm content, the higher the pH sensitivity. These hydrogels, based on a temperature‐sensitive hydrogel, demonstrated a significant change of equilibrium swelling in aqueous media between a highly solvated, swollen gel state and a dehydrated network response to small variations of temperature. pH‐thermoreversible hydrogels were used for a study of the release of a model drug, caffeine, with changes in temperature. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Hydrophobically modified poly[2‐(diethylamino)ethylmethacrylate‐co‐N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone/octadecyl acrylate) [P(DEAEMA‐co‐NVP/OA)] hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking copolymerization of 2‐(diethylamino)ethylmethacrylate (DEAEMA), N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) with different amounts of hydrophobic comonomer octadecyl acrylate (OA) in tert‐butanol with ethylene glycole dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinker. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels was investigated as a function of temperature and hydrophobic comonomer content in aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). The results indicated that the swelling behavior and temperature sensitivity of the hydrogels were affected by the type and concentration of surfactant solutions. Additionally, the amount of the adsorbed SDS and DTAB molecules onto the hydrogels was determined by fluorescence measurements. An increase of OA content in the hydrogel caused an increase in the amount of adsorbed surfactant molecules in both media. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) : gelatin (Ge), and a copolymer of NVP – acrylic acid (AA) : gelatin (Ge) were prepared using N‐N′methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) (0.5, 1% w/w) and glutaraldehyde (GLU) (0.5% v/v) as crosslinkers, respectively, by gamma irradiation technique. GLU was incorporated after irradiation to crosslink the gelatin chains, whereas BIS was placed in the respective solutions before irradiation. Several samples were prepared by varying the composition of gelatin to NVP or by changing the ratio of NVP : AA in preparing IPNs. The swelling behavior of the hydrogels was investigated as a function of variable doses, crosslinker (BIS) concentration, copolymer composition (NVP : AA ratio) or Ge : NVP ratio and pH of the immersion medium (3, 7.4, and 11). As expected, the swelling ratio increased with increasing acrylic acid content and decreased with increasing BIS content. No definite trend in the swelling behavior was observed as a function of dose. The interpenetration of the polymeric chains was established by morphological and thermal characterization. Scanning electron microscopy of IPNs showed a hybrid of coral and honeycomb structures as compared with the crosslinked polymers based on Ge and NVP (Gx and PVPx). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, photocured a novel thiol‐ene hydrogels based on P(Penta3MP4/PEG‐DA/HEMA) were investigated for adsorption of Au(III) ions from aqueous solutions purposes. The photopolymerization kinetics of thiol‐ene‐based formulations was investigated by real‐time infrared spectroscopy. The chemical composition and surface morphology of hydrogels were also characterized. The effect of different parameters on Au(III) adsorption efficiency was examined in detail. Better adsorption behavior was achieved for Au(III) by P(Penta3MP4/PEG‐DA/HEMA) F1 hydrogels. The maximum uptake for Au(III) was at pH 0.5. Both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were applied and the reusability of thiol‐ene hydrogels investigated. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

A new synthesis method of pH‐response superabsorbent hydrogels (SHG) was achieved by direct ultraviolet (UV) photopolymerization, and in particular, the synthesis of SHGs of acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate (AANa), and methacrylcholine chloride (MACC) tricomponent copolymer by UV photopolymerization were investigated. The pH value responsive behavior of SHG with different monomer ratios of MACC and AA was researched, and SHG showed large swelling properties at pH value approximately 7. Influences of monomer ratio (mol) of AANa to AA, photoinitiators, crosslinking agents, and exposure time of UV light on the water absorbent properties were studied. The results showed that the water absorbent capacity of SHG based on photoinitiators: Esacure KTO46 or Irgacure 651 can reach comparatively high, N,N′‐Methylene bisacrylamide and diethylene glycol diacrylate (DEGDA) were high efficient crosslinking agents for its crosslinking the molecular chains through attending the copolymerization with monomers. When the exposure time was 10 min, the distilled water absorbency of SHG was 1503 mL/g under the condition: content of MACC, 14.3 wt %; monomer ratio (mol) of AANa to AA: 5.67; content of DEGDA and Irgacure 651, 0.0025 and 0.25 wt %. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work has been concerned with the synthesis of the hydrogels of poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (NVP), poly (hydroxy ethylmethacrylate) (HEMA), and their copolymer under the effect of gamma radiation in the presence of N,N‐methylenebisacryl‐amide (MBAm) as a crosslinking agent. The effect of the different factors that may affect the gelation and yield product, such as solvent composition and irradiation dose, was investigated. The formed hydrogels were characterized in terms of swelling in water and different organic solvents, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and IR spectroscopic analysis. The sorption capability of these hydrogels towards some commercial basic and acid dyesstuffs was also studied. The results showed that a solvent mixture composed of equal contents of water and methanol is the most suitable to afford the minimum sol fraction and the highest yield product at a minimal irradiation dose of 10 kGy. It was observed that NVP hydrogel displayed the highest swelling in water, alcohols, and dimethyformamide of ~1300% and a lower tendency to swell in nonpolar solvents. The results showed that HEMA hydrogel has a high affinity to absorb basic dyes while NVP has a tendency for acid dyes. Also, the sorption of either the basic or acid dyes by the different hydrogels was found to greatly depend on the concentration of dye in solution and the mass of the used hydrogel. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, N‐allylsuccinamic acid (NASA) was synthesized in a single step with a yield of 85%. Carboxylic acid containing NASA was characterized through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) radiation and 1H‐NMR and 13C‐NMR analysis, and then it was used for synthesis of poly(2‐hydroxylethyl methacrylate‐co‐N‐allylsuccinamic acid) [p(HEMA‐co‐NASA)] hydrogels. The structure of the obtained pH‐responsive p(HEMA‐co‐NASA) hydrogels were characterized with FTIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis, and their swelling characterization was carried out under different drug‐release conditions. In the application step of the study, the hydrogels were used for the in vitro release of vitamin B12 and Rhodamine 6G, which were selected as model drugs. We determined that the hydrogels used as a drug‐delivery matrix could release the drug they had absorbed under different release conditions (phosphate‐buffered saline, 0.9% NaCl, and pH 1.2) at high rates for time periods of up to 24 h. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RAFT polymerization of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) has been investigated in the presence of chain transfer agent (CTA), i.e., prop‐2‐ynyl morpholine‐4‐carbodithioate (PMDC). The influence of reaction parameters such as monomer concentration [NVP], molar ratio of [CTA]/[AIBN, i.e., 2,2′‐azobis (2‐methylpropionitrile)] and [NVP]/[CTA], and temperature have been studied with regard to time and conversion limit. This study evidences the parameters leading to an excellent control of molecular weight and molar mass dispersity. NVP has been polymerized by maintaining molar ratio [NVP]: [PMDC]: [AIBN] = 100 : 1 : 0.2. Kinetics of the reaction was strongly influenced by both temperature and [CTA]/[AIBN] ratio and to a lesser extent by monomer concentration. The activation energy (Ea = 31.02 kJ mol?1) and enthalpy of activation (ΔH?= 28.29 kJ mol?1) was in a good agreement to each other. The negative entropy of activation (ΔS? = ?210.16 J mol‐1K‐1) shows that the movement of reactants are highly restricted at transition state during polymerization. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi and full interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogels were synthesized by allowing free radical copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in the matrix of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). Accordingly, four different semi IPN hydrogels were prepared with PVOH: copolymer mass ratio of 1 : 1, 1 : 0.75, 1 : 0.5, and 1 : 0.25. These hydrogels were designated as SEMIIPN1, SEMIIPN2, SEMIIPN3, and SEMIIPN4, respectively. In all of these SEMIIPN, after polymerization PVOH was crosslinked with 2 mass % glutaraldehyde to form the semi IPN structure. In a similar way, sequential full IPN were prepared from PVOH and copolymer of AA and HEMA (designated as PAAHEMA) with same composition except in this case apart from crosslinking of PVOH by 2 mass % glutaraldehyde the PAAHEMA copolymer was further crosslinked with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (NMBA) to produce four full IPN hydrogels designated as FULLIPN1, FULLIPN2, FULLIPN3, and FULLIPN4. All of these semi and full IPN type hydrogels were characterized by carboxylic %, FTIR, UV, DTA‐TGA, XRD, SEM, and mechanical properties. The network parameters, swelling and diffusion characteristics of these hydrogels were also studied. The performance of these semi and full IPNs were compared in terms of their relative abilities for removing varied concentration of rhodamine B (RB) and methyl Violet (MV) dyes from water. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive poly (N,N‐diethylacrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) (P(DEA‐co‐AA)) hydrogels were prepared in NaCl aqueous solutions with different concentrations. Swelling and deswelling studies showed that in comparison with conventional P(DEA‐co‐AA) hydrogels (prepared in distilled water), the P(DEA‐co‐AA) hydrogels thus prepared had almost the same volume phase transition temperature (VPTT), but exhibited much faster response rates as the temperature was raised above their VPTT. Besides, the hydrogels prepared by this method had faster response rates in low pH buffer solutions, and the response rates increased with the increased concentration of the NaCl solutions used during the polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of thermosensitive hydrogels were prepared from various molar ratios of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and sodium‐2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropyl sulfonate (NaAMPS). Factors such as temperature and initial total monomer concentration and different pH solutions were investigated. Results indicated that the more the NaAMPS content in hydrogel system, the higher the swelling ratio and the gel transition temperature; the higher the initial monomer concentration, the lower the swelling ratio. The result also indicated that the NIPAAm/NaAMPS copolymeric hydrogels had different swelling ratios in various pH environments. The present gels showed a pH‐reversible property between pH 3 and pH 10 and thermoreversibility. The swelling ratios of copolymeric gels were lower in a strong alkaline environment because the gels were screened by counterions. Finally, the drug release behavior of these gels was also investigated in this article. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 77: 1760–1768, 2000  相似文献

A series of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate/1‐vinyl‐3‐(3‐sulfopropyl)imidazolium betaine (HEMA/VSIB) copolymeric gels were prepared from various molar ratios of HEMA and the zwitterionic monomer VSIB. The influence of the amount of VSIB in copolymeric gels on their swelling behavior in water and various saline solutions at different temperatures and the drug‐release behavior, compression strength, and crosslinking density were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the PHEMA hydrogel and the lower VSIB content (3%) in the HEMA/VSIB gel exhibited an overshooting phenomenon in their dynamic swelling behavior, and the overshooting ratio decreased with increase of the temperature. In the equilibrium water content, the value increased with increase of the VSIB content in HEMA/VSIB hydrogels. In the saline solution, the water content for these gels was not affected by the ion concentration when the salt concentration was lower than the minimum salt concentration (MSC) of poly(VSIB). When the salt concentration was higher than the MSC of poly(VSIB), the deswelling behavior of the copolymeric gel was more effectively suppressed as more VSIB was added to the copolymeric gels. However, the swelling behavior of gels in KI, KBr, NaClO4, and NaNO3 solutions at a higher concentration would cause an antipolyelectrolyte phenomenon. Besides, the anion effects were larger than were the cation effects in the presence of a common anion (Cl?) with different cations and a common cation (K+) with different anions for the hydrogel. In drug‐release behavior, the addition of VSIB increased the drug‐release ratio and the release rate. Finally, the addition of VSIB in the hydrogel improved the gel strength and crosslinking density of the gel. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 2888–2900, 2001  相似文献

In this study, a new cationic monomer 2‐(3‐indol‐yl)ethylmethacrylamide (IEMA) derived from tryptamine was synthesized in a single step and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H‐NMR, and 13C‐NMR. Then, one‐step preparation of novel poly[2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate‐c‐2‐(3‐indol‐yl)ethylmethacrylamide], or p(HEMA‐c‐IEMA), copolymeric hydrogels has been performed successfully with IEMA and 2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) as monomers using free radical aqueous polymerization. The hydrogels were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and texture profile analysis instruments. p(HEMA‐c‐IEMA) hydrogels were used for swelling, diffusion, drug release, and antibacterial activity studies. The drug‐release behavior of the hydrogels was determined as a function of time at 37 °C in pH 1.2 and 7.2. The swelling and drug‐release studies showed that an increased IEMA amount caused a higher increase in swelling and drug‐release values. Additionally, zero‐order, first‐order, and Higuchi equation kinetic models were applied to the drug‐release data, and the data fit well in the Higuchi model, and the Peppas power‐law model was applied to the release mechanism. Finally, the antibacterial activities of the hydrogels were screened against Gram‐positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram‐negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium). © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel dual temperature‐ and pH‐sensitive poly(acrylic acid‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide), AA/NIPAAm, hydrogels were successfully prepared by chemical crosslinking with crosslinkers. Copolymers of AA/NIPAAm were crosslinked in the presence of different mol % of N,N‐methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) and melamine triacrylamide (MAAm) as crosslinkers by bulk radical polymerization. The resultant xerogels were characterized by extracting the soluble fractions and measuring the equilibrium water content. Lower critical solution transition temperatures (LCST) were measured by DSC. The properties of crosslinked AA/NIPAAm series are evaluated in terms of compositional drift of polymerization, heterogeneous crosslinking, and chemical structure of the relevant components. Soluble fractions of the crosslinked networks were reduced by varying the MAAm and MBA concentrations. The influence of environmental conditions such as temperature and pH on the swelling behavior of these polymeric gels was investigated. The swelling behaviors of the resulting gels show pH sensitivity. The prepared MAAm type AA/NIPAAm hydrogels exhibited a more rapid deswelling rate than MBA type AA/NIPAAm hydrogels in ultra pure water in response to abrupt changes from 20°C to 50°C. The results of this study provide valuable information regarding the development of dual stimuli‐sensitive hydrogels with fast responsiveness. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
