This study investigated the various stressors encountered by the nursing profession. In particular, the following hypotheses were tested: (1) working conditions of nurses significantly affect perceived risk of injury and illness, work dissatisfaction, work satisfaction, energy state at the end of workday, the effort exerted by the registered nurse (RN), psychosomatic outcomes, and musculoskeletal symptoms (in multiple body regions); (2) both intermediate work effects (i.e., effort, perceived risk of injury/illness, work satisfaction/dissatisfaction, energy state at end of workday) and psychosomatic outcomes significantly affect musculoskeletal outcomes (in multiple body regions); (3) both working conditions and effects significantly affect musculoskeletal outcomes. In a preliminary study conducted on 34 registered nurses, results show that: (1) stressful working conditions affect musculoskeletal outcomes in multiple body regions, and (2) physical maladies such as lower back problems are not only associated with physical factors but also with a complex interaction of working conditions. Further research is warranted to obtain a better understanding of the complex interaction and the synergistic effects of the various nursing working conditions.  相似文献

A number of individual, ergonomic, and organizational factors of presumed importance for the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders were investigated in a group of 260 visual display terminal (VDT) workers. The cross-sectional study utilized medical and workplace investigations as well as questionnaires. The results were subjected to a multivariate analysis in order to find the major factors associated with various upper-body muscular problems. Several such factors were identified for each investigated type of musculoskeletal problem. Some were related to the individual: age, gender, woman with children at home, use of spectacles, smoking, stomach-related stress reactions, and negative affectivity. Organizational variables of importance were opportunities for flexible rest breaks, extreme peer contacts, task flexibility, and overtime. Identified ergonomic variables were static work posture, hand position, use of lower arm support, repeated work movements, and keyboard or VDT vertical position.  相似文献

BackgroundMusculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) has been a well-known occupational health issue for workers over recent years, and the prevalence among school teachers is particularly high. In Malaysia, few studies are focusing on MSDs and associated factors among school teachers, but in Terengganu, there is no data available for MSDs among school teachers. Objectives: To identify the prevalence of MSDs and associated risk factors among female teachers in Terengganu primary school. Methods: Data collection was carried out with a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 212 female school teachers participated in this study. Results: The findings show that the prevalence for any parts of the body was 40.1%. The most affected part of the body was feet, with 32.5% for the past 12-months and 36.8% for the past 7 days. The most significant risk factors that associated with body parts (lower back, thigh, calf, knee, and feet) were age, BMI, sports activity, shoe type, teaching hours, and standing hours during school. Conclusion: Female teachers in Terengganu's primary school had shown a significant prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders. The most affected body parts were feet, followed by knee, upper back, and lower back. Related risk factors such as age, BMI, sports activity, type of shoe, teaching hours and standing hours were analysed. Hence, they are prone to have higher MSDs prevalence than current results due to significant risk factors if there is no measure taken to reduce MSDs prevalence among teachers.  相似文献

This study investigated the behavioural aspects of ecological validity of anaesthesia simulation environments using a task analysis approach. Six anaesthesists were observed during two cases performed in the operating room (OR), one routine and two critical incident simulation scenarios. A two-way MANOVA for repeated measures was performed with the independent variables Case (OR/SIM-R/SIM-CI) and Phase Induction/Maintenance (Emergence), the latter being a repeated measure. Dependent variables were the proportion of each phase spent on each of the observation categories. Statistically significant main effects for Phase concerning communication, monitoring, manual tasks and documentation, for Case concerning communication and documentation, and a significant interaction effect for Phase × Case concerning manual tasks and other were found. Increased action density (i.e. amount of co-occurring activities) was observed during Induction, Emergence and the Management of simulated critical events. The similarities and differences in anaesthetists' activity patterns identified in this study will help to further improve the ecological validity of simulation environments as research settings.  相似文献

Field observation studies can be an important tool during the discovery phase of the scientific process. They enable observers to identify and document patterns of interaction among practitioners, complications that arise and adaptive strategies developed in response to the exigencies of the work environment. We conducted an observational study that examined operating room (OR) team performance during ten lengthy and complex surgical procedures. The study allowed us to identify latent factors that complicate the cognitive and collaborative performance of OR teams and can contribute to adverse events, and the strategies that medical practitioners have developed to coordinate performance and to minimis e the potential for adverse events. The paper describes the methodology employed, presents illustrative results and discusses issues unique to the design and analysis of observational studies. While video recordings were not used in this study, the data analysis method and results are illustrative of exploratory data analysis approaches that lend themselves to video analysis.  相似文献

Musculoskeletal strain and other symptoms are common in visual display unit (VDU) work. Psychosocial factors are closely related to the outcome and experience of musculoskeletal strain. The user – computer relationship from the viewpoint of the quality of perceived competence in computer use was assessed as a psychosocial stress indicator. It was assumed that the perceived competence in computer use moderates the experience of musculoskeletal strain and the success of the ergonomics intervention. The participants (n = 124, female 58%, male 42%) worked with VDU for more than 4 h per week. They took part in an ergonomics intervention and were allocated into three groups: intensive; education; and reference group. Musculoskeletal strain, the level of ergonomics of the workstation assessed by the experts in ergonomics and amount of VDU work were estimated at the baseline and at the 10-month follow-up. Age, gender and the perceived competence in computer use were assessed at the baseline. The perceived competence in computer use predicted strain in the upper and the lower part of the body at the follow-up. The interaction effect shows that the intensive ergonomics intervention procedure was the most effective among participants with high perceived competence. The interpretation of the results was that an anxiety-provoking and stressful user – computer relationship prevented the participants from being motivated and from learning in the ergonomics intervention. In the intervention it is important to increase the computer competence along with the improvements of physical workstation and work organization.  相似文献

BackgroundWork-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are the most common occupational health problems in the industrialized world. The identification of WMSDs specific to occupation is essential to plan and implement preventative programs. This study investigated the prevalence of WMSDs and determined the factors related to the severity of the most common disorders among female workers in a hazelnut factory.MethodsA total of 114 female workers were examined in this cross-sectional study using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, the Dutch Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, and an author-developed questionnaire (for socio-demographic characteristics and psychosocial factors). Working posture, craniovertebral angle, thoracic kyphosis angle (TKA), and lumbar lordosis angle were evaluated based on a photogrammetry method using the ImageJ program.ResultsThe prevalence of WMSDs in at least one body part during the last 12 months was 92.1%. The highest prevalence of WMSDs was in the lower back (61.4%), neck (57.9%), shoulder (53.6%), and upper back (45.6%). The least affected part was the elbow. Lower back, shoulder, and neck disorders were the most common causes of activity limitation. The severity of lower back pain was associated with stress in the workplace and work-related factors. The neck pain severity was related to craniovertebral angle and work-related factors. The shoulder pain severity increased with TKA and employment duration. TKA was related to upper back pain severity.ConclusionsWMSDs are common among female workers in a hazelnut factory. Reorganizing of working posture, work-related factors, and stress at work may be beneficial to decrease the prevalence of WMSDs and pain severity.Relevance to Industry; The female workers in the hazelnut factory are vulnerable to the work-related musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in the spinal region. The employers should endeavor to improve the health of the workers by the adjustment of the working posture and environmental factors.  相似文献

The Work ability of ageing work force is a matter of major concern in many countries. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived work ability and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and to investigate their associations with age, physical activity and physical fitness in middle-aged men working in blue-collar occupations. The study population consisted of 196 middle-aged (aged 40-60 years) men (construction and industrial work) attending occupationally orientated early medical rehabilitation. They were mostly healthy having only symptoms of musculoskeletal or psychological strain. Perceived work ability was assessed with the work ability index (WAI) and HRQoL with the Rand, 36-item health survey (Rand-36). Information on physical activity was obtained with a structured questionnaire. Cardiorespiratory fitness was estimated with a submaximal exercise test on a cycle-ergometer. The WAI was significantly (p<0.001) associated with the total score of Rand-36, and with all its domains. Age, physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness were neither associated with the WAI, nor did physical activity predict any of the dimensions of Rand-36. Cardiorespiratory fitness was associated with the physical functioning dimension of the Rand-36 whilst age was positively associated with the dimensions of the energy, emotional well being and social functioning of the Rand-36. The present study on middle-aged men showed a close relationship between perceived work ability and the HRQoL. It is suggested that the promotion of work ability may have beneficial effects on quality of life.  相似文献

This study aimed to identify the associations among low back pain (LBP), LBP‐related disability, agricultural working condition management, and quality of life (QOL) in Korean farmers. Demographic information, agricultural work management, and outcomes of LBP were obtained by standardized questionnaires (Oswestry Disability Index [ODI] for disability and European Quality of Life‐5 Dimensions‐3‐Level version [EQ‐5D‐3L] for QOL). Presence of LBP was determined if the LBP had lasted longer than 1 week or had been more frequent than once a month, and presence of LBP‐related disability was determined if the ODI score was more than 12. Poor health checkups (OR [odds ratio] = 1.70–86, p < .05), were positively associated with LBP, and working at dawn (OR = 1.85–1.96, p < .05), was positively associated with LBP‐related disability after adjusting related demographic factors. EQ‐5D‐3L indexes were significantly lower in participants with LBP (0.83 ± 0.17 vs. 0.92 ± 0.06, p < .001) and disability (0.81 ± 0.18 vs. 0.93 ± 0.05, p < .001). This study showed that the presence of LBP was related to poor health checkups and that LBP‐related disability was related to a poor working time schedule. These results indicate poor QOL and suggest the need for coping strategies such as regular health checkups and a proper working time schedule.  相似文献

Background and aimsMusculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are major occupational health concerns. This study examined the associations of ergonomic and psychosocial work hazards with the risks of MSDs of specific body parts and their distribution across a wide range of occupational groups.MethodsStudy participants comprised 8,937 male and 7,052 female employees aged 20–65 years from a nationwide survey in 2016. A self-report questionnaire was administered to obtain information regarding demographic characteristics, work conditions, ergonomic and psychosocial work hazards, and MSDs of different body parts in 12 months. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios of MSDs in relation to ergonomic and psychosocial work hazards.ResultsIn professionals and skilled workers, MSDs of the neck and shoulders were more prevalent, whereas in manual workers, MSDs of the hands, wrists, and lower back were more prevalent. Psychosocial work hazards, including high psychological demand and low workplace justice, were major work-related risk factors for shoulder and neck disorders, whereas ergonomic hazards were major work-related risk factors for lower back and wrist or hand disorders.ConclusionDifferent workplace hazards contribute to the risks of different MSDs. To prevent the development of MSDs, occupational health professionals should evaluate both ergonomic and psychosocial work hazards and develop health prevention programs tailored to the risk profiles of working populations.  相似文献

This study evaluates the association of physical and mental strain with the onset and persistence of multi-site musculoskeletal pain among younger and older employees in four-year follow-up. A questionnaire survey was conducted twice in a food processing company, in 2005 and 2009, with responses from 734 employees (445 younger and 289 older; 65% female). Information on musculoskeletal pain during the preceding week and perceived mental and physical strain was obtained through a structured questionnaire. The association of onset and persistent of multi-site pain with mental and physical strain was estimated with log binomial regression analysis and stratified by age group. Risk ratios (RR) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) are reported for the estimates. More than 56% of the employees reported multi-site pain at baseline. Among those who reported multi-site pain at baseline 70% reported persistent multi-site pain and one-third reported new onset of multi-site pain at follow-up. Mental strain at baseline strongly predicted persistence of multi-site pain among both younger and older employees (RR from for younger employees = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.01–2.83 and RR for older employees = 2.25, 95% CI 0 1.27–3.98) but the association with physical strain was not statistically significant. Mental strain predicted the risk of persistence of multi-site pain among both younger and older employees in four-year follow-up but not onset of multi-site pain.Relevance to the industryThe results of this study suggest that monitoring working conditions of all age workers can reduce physical and mental strain, thereby reducing the incidence of multi-site musculoskeletal pain and promoting workers' health.  相似文献

Operating rooms (OR) are where medical teams work to improve the health of a patient. However, because of the complexity of the procedures, errors and unsafe situations are likely to occur. These complications can lead to harm to the patient or medical professionals. Human factors and ergonomic professionals have been working to improve these unsafe conditions in the OR for over a century. However, with advances in technology, increased surgical complexity, as well as an increase in medical team members in the OR, there are still numerous improvements yet to be accomplished. Minimally invasive surgeries require an even more advanced approach to prevent errors due to technology, fatigue, and miscommunication. Human factors and ergonomic techniques provide the ability to greatly improve conditions for patients and surgeons alike. Background and aimGastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been associated with sick leave, decreased work productivity and poor quality of life. Another possible cause for the development of GERD is the relationship with maintaining the posture in flexion of the spine. The aim of this study was: (1) to compare gastro esophageal reflux with musculoskeletal disorders and quality of life of dentists, (2) to evaluate the association between gastro esophageal reflux such as time in the profession, time working while sitting, musculoskeletal disorders and quality of life of dentists.Methods83 dentists (23 males and 60 females; average age 39.3 years old) participated in the study, who were evaluated for their time in the profession, sitting time, musculoskeletal disorders, quality of life (SF-12v2) and the GERD symptoms using the Frequency Scale for Symptoms of GERD (FSSG) questionnaire.ResultsThe results showed that the majority were female (72.3%) and sendentary (74.7%). A difference was found between the level of GERD with musculoskeletal disorders (p < 0.05) and quality of life (p < 0.05). An association was also found between GERD and working time (p < 0.01), sitting working time (p < 0.05), headache (p < 0.01) and quality of life (p < 0, 01).ConclusionThis study showed that there was an association with working time, sitting time, musculoskeletal disorders, quality of life and GERD in dentists.  相似文献

Ergonomic epidemiology is a rapidly increasing field of research providing data on the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders and possible risk factors. The present paper states, on the basis of a literature overview, that physical work load (mechanical exposure) is poorly denned and measured in most studies on ergonomic epidemiology. On this background the paper: (1) suggests adjustments of mechanical exposure concepts and terminology; (2) concludes that invalid exposure assessment may, to a large extent, explain the lack of quantitative data on relationships between mechanical exposures and musculoskeletal disorders; and (3) suggests some guidelines for future quantitative assessments of mechanical exposure in large populations.  相似文献

Firefighters perform various tasks during firefighting operations under unknown and unpredictable conditions. The present study investigated the impact of firefighting activities and cooling tactics on information processing and work performance. Firefighters performed typical firefighting tasks in the four experimental conditions, namely i) no cooling device (NC), ii) cooling gel (CG), iii) cool vest (CV), and iv) cooling gel and cool vest (CG + CV). The measurement of information processing, Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT) scores decreased significantly after the firefighting activities in the four conditions, relative to baseline. The results revealed no significant difference in PASAT scores among the four conditions. However, the performance time (PT) was significantly shorter for the CV and CG + CV compared to the NC and CG conditions. The findings confirmed that the firefighting activities have a detrimental effect on information processing. The CG + CV and CV were more effective than CG and NC in improving PT during firefighting. However, the cooling strategies have a negligible effect on improving information processing performance.  相似文献
