Studies were conducted to evaluate spent hen meal (SHM) produced in commercial rendering plants as a nutrient source in diets for broiler chickens. Utilizing previously determined nutrient composition values, including digestible amino acid and TMEn content, diets were formulated to include 0, 5, 10, and 15% of SHM from three different locations. In the first experiment, conducted in battery pens from 1 to 21 d posthatch, diets were formulated with digestible amino acid requirements set at 90, 95, or 100% of NRC (1994) total amino acid requirements. In the second experiment, conducted in floor pens from 1 to 49 d posthatch, diets were formulated with digestible amino acid requirements set at 95% of NRC (1994) total amino acid requirements. Samples of birds from the second experiment were processed to determine the possible influence of SHM inclusion on carcass yield. Results of the present studies indicate that SHM from commercial rendering facilities can be utilized in diets for growing broiler chickens provided adjustments are made in nutrient content and digestibility. When formulated on the basis of digestible amino acid content, levels of SHM up to 10% appear acceptable based upon body weight, feed conversion, bone ash, and carcass yield. Higher inclusion rates generally reduced performance. It is apparent that differences in nutritional quality may exist among products produced by different rendering facilities; however, evaluation of products to assess nutrient quality may be difficult under commercial conditions. The responses of growth and feed efficiency to pelleted feed was investigated in 4- to 7-wk-old broiler chickens, and in 8- to 12- and 16- to 20-wk-old turkeys. In all cases, the growth and feed efficiency responses were linear within the ranges of dietary energy tested. When energy was added by carbohydrate supplementation, weight gain and feed efficiency responses were parallel for both mash and pellets, but due to the growth response to pellets, the elevation was higher for pellets than for mash. When energy was added by fat, the growth response to pellets also resulted in an increase in function elevation but the slope of the response was lower than in mash feeding, possibly due to a decline in pellet quality as dietary fat increased. Grinding of pellets completely abolished the growth and feed efficiency responses observed when the physical form was preserved. In chickens, comparisons of ground pellets to mash suggested some decline in nutritional quality due to the process of pelleting when either carbohydrates or fat were increased in the diets. In both chickens and turkeys, the feeding of pelleted diets resulted in an increase in abdominal fat. 相似文献

The effects of lard added to starter diets on various serum lipids were determined in broiler chickens between 14 and 42 d of age. Nonisocaloric starter diets were formulated to contain either 0, 3, or 7% added lard, where the megacaloric percentages of all major nutrients were held constant. Birds received either 0, 3, or 7% added lard in starter diets through 10 d of age (S1), followed by either 3 or 7% added dietary lard through 21 d of age (S2). All possible combinations of the three S1 diets and two S2 diets yielded six total dietary treatments. A common grower diet was provided after 21 d. Concentrations of various serum lipids were determined weekly from 14 to 42 d of age. The effects of both the S1 and S2 diets on total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) were inconsistent and were influenced by sex between 14 and 42 d of age. However, serum triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations showed progressive increases over the 14 to 42 d period in birds that received dietary lard at either level in the S1 diet. These same serum constituents also increased to the greatest extents over the same period when birds were provided 3% added lard in the S2 diet. It was concluded that the response of broiler chickens between 14 and 42 d to different levels of dietary lard were influenced by age of feeding during the starter period. Furthermore, the specific effects of the diets on serum cholesterol, LDLC, and HDLC concentrations between 14 and 42 d varied with the sex and age of the bird. 相似文献

We have compared the effects of three different margarines, one based on palm oil (PALM-margarine), one based on partially hydrogenated soybean oil (TRANS-margarine) and one with a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA-margarine), on serum lipids in 27 young women. The main purpose of the study was to test if replacement of trans fatty acids in margarine by palmitic acid results in unfavorable effects on serum lipids. The sum of saturated fatty acids (12:0, 14:0, 16:0) was 36.3% of total fatty acids in the PALM-diet, the same as the sum of saturated (12:0, 14:0, 16:0) (12.5%) and trans (23.1%) fatty acids in the TRANS-diet. This sum was 20.7% in the PUFA-diet. The content of oleic acid was 37.9, 35.2, and 38.6%, respectively, in the three diets, whereas linoleic acid amounted to 16, 13.5, and 27.3%, respectively. Total fat provided 30-31% and the test margarines 26% of total energy in all three diets. The subjects consumed each of the diets for 17 d in a Latin-square crossover design. There were no significant differences in total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (apoB) between the TRANS- and the PALM-diets. High density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and apoA-1 were significantly higher on the PALM-diet compared to the TRANS-diet whereas the ratio of LDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol was lower, although not significantly (P = 0.077) on the PALM-diet. Total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and apoB were significantly lower on the PUFA-diet compared to the two other diets. HDL-cholesterol was not different on the PALM- and the PUFA-diets but it was significantly lower on the TRANS-diet compared to the PUFA diet. Compared to the PUFA-diet the ratio of LDL- to HDL-cholesterol was higher on both the PALM- and the TRANS-diets whereas apoA-1 was not different. Triglycerides and lipoprotein (a) were not significantly different among the three diets. We concluded that nutritionally, palmitic acid from palm oil may be a reasonable alternative to trans fatty acids from partially hydrogenated soybean oil in margarine if the aim is to avoid trans fatty acids. Young female broiler chickens fed diets amended with 0, 35, 75, and 150 mg fusaric acid (FA)/kg diet for 3 weeks showed no aberrations in behavior, feed intake, weight gain, or appearance of the visceral organs. Furthermore, there was no correlation between the dietary concentration of FA and incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia and leg-shape deformities. Ash content of dry fat-free tibiae was not influenced by FA; thus, no rickets was present in these chickens. FA enhanced the humoral response to sheep erythrocytes but significantly reduced cell-mediated cutaneous response to phytohemagglutinin-P. 相似文献

Thirty-six young male Syrian hamsters were fed with test diets containing coconut oil, soybean oil or fish oil with and without 0.5% cholesterol for 6 weeks. Without dietary cholesterol supplementation, animals on the fish oil diet had significantly lower plasma total triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol than those on the coconut oil or soybean oil diet. The decrease of TG was seen mainly in the very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) fraction. The degree of decrease in cholesterol was similar in all of the lipoprotein fractions. With 0.5% dietary cholesterol supplementation, there was no significant difference in plasma TG level among the three dietary groups. However, the fish oil group had significantly higher plasma cholesterol than the coconut oil and soybean oil groups. The increase of cholesterol was mainly in the VLDL and low density lipoprotein (LDL) fractions. In contrast to the plasma cholesterol level, the hepatic cholesteryl ester content was significantly lower in the cholesterol-supplemented fish oil group than in the coconut oil and soybean oil counterparts. The cholesterol-supplemented fish oil group showed higher liver microsomal acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase activity than the other two groups, while there was no significant difference in the excretion of fecal neutral and acidic sterols among the three dietary groups. 相似文献

In the present study, acute effects of ionizing radiation on animal survival, bone marrow cells and fibroblast cell lines of scid homozygous, scid heterozygous and wild-type mice with the same C.B-17 genetic background were examined. The sensitivities to ultraviolet light (UV) and various chemicals, bleomycin, mitomycin C, N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, methyl methanosulphonate, 5-fluorouracil, 6-mercaptopurine, 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide and potassium bromate) were also investigated. In addition, micronucleus testing of whole-body irradiated mice was performed. Scid heterozygous mice were found to be less sensitive than the homozygotes but more sensitive to ionizing radiation than wild-type mice, not only in vivo but also for bone marrow cells in vitro, suggesting partial dominance under both conditions. In contrast, there were no differences in sensitivity to UV light and various chemicals, as compared with wild-type and scid heterozygous cell lines, either in vitro or in the micronucleus test. 相似文献

Six isolates of Mycoplasma synoviae, identified as WVU 1853, K1968, K1858, 92D8034, F10-2AS, and FMT, were compared for pathogenicity in broiler chickens. Specific-pathogen-free chickens were inoculated, in two groups of 20, with each isolate by footpad or eyedrop inoculation at 1 day of age and were examined at necropsy 7, 14, 28, and 42 days postinoculation. Specimens were taken for histopathology, culture, polymerase chain reaction assay, and hemagglutination-inhibition serology. Isolates were grouped according to pathogenicity on the basis of differences in lesion development and tissue distribution in the respiratory system, other viscera, and the skeletal system. K1968 (pathogenic) induced lesions in all sites examined in both the footpad and eyedrop inoculation groups. It was detected in all sites following footpad inoculation and in all sites except viscera following eyedrop inoculation. WVU 1853, K1858, and 92D8034 (moderately pathogenic) induced lesions and were detected in all sites following footpad inoculation. With eyedrop inoculation, lesions were identified only in upper and lower respiratory sites, and organisms were detected only in upper respiratory sites. F10-2AS (moderately pathogenic) was similar; however, footpad inoculation failed to induce visceral lesions or permit organism detection in any site. F10-2AS was detected in upper and lower respiratory tissues following eyedrop inoculation. FMT (mildly pathogenic) induced only upper respiratory lesions when either footpad or eyedrop inoculation was used, and detection was restricted to upper respiratory sites following eyedrop inoculation. These results are useful in comparative evaluations of the virulence of other M. synoviae isolates and form a basis for characterization of virulence factors of M. synoviae. 相似文献

Chicken carcasses from a supermarket and from a poultry abattoir were examined using methods designed to isolate as many strains of campylobacters and related organisms as possible. Strains of arcobacter, but no campylobacters, were isolated from every carcass after enrichment. Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni was isolated from all carcasses examined by direct plating and other Campylobacter-like strains were isolated from nine out of 15 abattoir carcasses by direct plating but not after enrichment. Only the Camp. jejuni subsp. jejuni strains could be identified to species level using a readily available identification scheme and/or a commercial identification kit. Examination of caecal contents from the 15 abattoir poultry yielded Camp. jejuni subsp. jejuni and Campylobacter-like strains from 15 and eight by direct plating, and from six and nine after enrichment, respectively. Four sites in the intestine of the abattoir birds (60 samples) were examined for arcobacters and only one strain was isolated. This indicates that arcobacters are probably not normal inhabitants of the poultry intestine. Poultry is a rich source of other campylobacteria besides the thermophilic Campylobacter spp. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the Bard BTA (bladder tumour antigen) test with voided urine cytology (VUC) in the diagnosis of recurrent bladder cancer (BC). METHODS: Urine specimens for the BTA test and VUC were collected on the same day as before cystoscopy from patients undergoing routine surveillance cystoscopy for recurrent BC. The pathologists performing VUC were blinded to the results of the BTA test. RESULTS: BC was identified by cystoscopy and biopsy in 39 of 164 study participants. The overall sensitivities of the BTA test and VUC were 54 and 28%, respectively (p < 0.05). The BTA test was more sensitive than VUC for all tumour stages and grades. For > or = T2 tumours and grade 3 tumours, respectively, the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The specificities of the BTA test and VUC were 92 and 97%, respectively. Both a false-positive BTA test and VUC were found to predict recurrence. CONCLUSION: The BTA test is equal or superior to VUC in the detection of BC in patients undergoing routine surveillance for recurrent BC. 相似文献

An experiment with a 5 x 5 Latin square design was conducted to determine the effects of the addition of soybean oil to high fiber diets on ruminal fermentation and ruminal lipid concentrations. Diets were 50% bermudagrass hay and 50% concentrate. Soybean oil was added to diets at 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8% of the dietary dry matter (DM). Ruminal samples were collected every 2 h on the last day of each period and analyzed for volatile fatty acids and lipids. The addition of soybean oil decreased DM and organic matter intake but increased fatty acid intake. Soybean oil had no effect on total tract digestibility of DM, organic matter, N, or neutral detergent fiber but decreased digestibility of fatty acids. The addition of soybean oil decreased total volatile fatty acid concentrations and the acetate to propionate ratio. Ruminal concentrations of unsaturated free fatty acids increased nonlinearly as soybean oil in the diets increased but remained < 0.67 mg/g of DM or 3% of the total fatty acids. Ruminal concentrations of total fatty acids and total saturated fatty acids increased nonlinearly as soybean oil in the diets increased. Total unsaturated fatty acid concentrations increased linearly as soybean oil increased. Neutral lipid concentrations in the rumen did not respond to increased soybean oil. These data indicate that large amounts of soybean oil can be fed in high fiber diets without greatly increasing the concentration of ruminal unsaturated fatty acids or depressing nutrient digestibility. 相似文献

The effects of dietary gentian violet upon certain physiological parameters of broiler chickens were studied. Gentian violet exhibited no effect upon growth rates or feed conversion ratios at dietary levels of 16, 32, or 64 micrograms/g. In vitro intestinal absorption of methionine and glucose was also unaltered. Dietary gentian violet significantly increased hemoglobin concentration without an effect on packed cell volume. Furthermore, commercial gentian violet containing preparations, when incorporated into the diet, resulted in increased intestinal absorption of Fe59 but this increase was dependent upon type of inert carrier used. Dietary gentian violet alleviated some of the growth suppression caused by dietary aflatoxin; however, no effect was observed on plasma pigmentation. These data suggest that dietary gentian violet possesses effects other than those for which it has been traditionally employed. 相似文献

Ninety-nine strains of Arcobacter spp., isolated from 10 chicken carcasses purchased from a supermarket and 15 chicken carcasses collected from a poultry abattoir, were speciated using a variety of phenotypic identification methods. All were tested using API Campy test strips and the 16-test (Preston) identification scheme developed for campylobacters. Fifty strains were selected for examination using a more comprehensive probabilistic identification scheme, and the identity of representative strains confirmed by protein profiling using SDS-PAGE. All 25 carcasses yielded Arcobacter butzleri. Three supermarket and 10 abattoir carcasses also carried A. cryaerophilus, and two abattoir carcasses carried A. skirrowii. The API Campy scheme proved unsatisfactory for identifying these strains: only 20 of 99 strains were accurately identified, all of which were A. cryaerophilus, the only Arcobacter sp. included in the database. Moreover, 76 of 99 strains were misidentified. The 16-test scheme identified all the arcobacter strains as A. cryaerophilus, since neither A. butzleri nor A. skirrowii had been described when the scheme was developed. The computer-assisted probabilistic scheme succeeded in identifying all but one strain, the identity of which was clarified by the use of SDS-PAGE. To our knowledge this is the first time that arcobacters other than A. butzleri have been reported in poultry meat or any other food of animal origin. Their high prevalence in poultry products may be of significance to public health. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies suggest an involvement of the obese (OB) gene and its product leptin in the regulation of body fat. Since adults with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) have a high body fat mass which can be normalized with recombinant human (rh) GH therapy, we investigated whether GH influences serum leptin directly or indirectly via its lipolytic effect. DESIGN: Fourteen adults with GHD were treated with subcutaneous injections of rhGH given every evening for 52 weeks. Serum leptin, fat mass and body fat percentage were measured at baseline and after 4 and 52 weeks of treatment. METHODS: Serum leptin was measured with a commercially available RIA. Total body water was determined by dilution of deuterium. Fat free mass was estimated by assuming a hydration of 73%. Fat mass was estimated by subtracting fat free mass from weight. RESULTS: At baseline, serum leptin levels were exponentially related to body fat percentage (r = 0.88; P < 0.0005). rhGH treatment for 4 weeks did not significantly influence serum leptin levels, whereas treatment for 52 weeks significantly decreased serum leptin levels (15.6 +/- 2.9 to 10.8 +/- 2.1 micrograms/l; P = 0.020). Fat percentage was significantly decreased after 52 weeks of treatment (37.6 +/- 2.1 to 33.8 +/- 2.5%; P < 0.0005). The decrease in serum leptin could largely be explained by the decrease in body fat percentage, whereas the relation between leptin and body fat percentage did not change. Evidence suggests that individuals with DMD have reduced skeletal development, including decreased linear growth and bone mineral density, compared to normal subjects. Despite their reduced muscle mass, a high percentage of DMD patients are overweight. Body composition measurements can assist with monitoring changes in fat mass and skeletal muscle mass as the disease progresses. Weight management in overweight DMD patients is indicated because excess adiposity burdens mobility and breathing, but only one study in two DMD patients has documented that weight reduction can be done safely. In the latter stages of the disease most DMD subjects become underweight because of an acceleration in skeletal muscle protein degradation relative to its synthesis. Studies of energy, protein and branched chain amino acid supplementation in DMD have yielded promising but inconclusive results, and more well-designed studies are needed in this area. Although there is currently no cure for DMD, studies on the role of nutritional therapy in increasing the quality of life in these patients are urgently needed. Studies in adults with various SP-NMDs indicate a reduction in fat-free mass and an increase in fat mass relative to controls. The newly developed method of air displacement plethysmography for measuring body composition is ideally suited for SP-NMD subjects because it requires very little effort and the measurement procedure is relatively fast. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry technology has been proposed for distinguishing myogenic from neurogenic SP-NMDs from calculation of the fat-to-lean soft tissue ratio, which is higher in patients with myogenic muscular atrophy. Studies on the energy metabolism of ambulatory SP-NMD subjects indicate that their basal metabolic rate is either similar to or slightly lower than controls, but 24-hour energy expenditure is about 25% lower than controls. This reduction in 24-hour energy expenditure is due to a reduction in physical activity in SP-NMD. Studies examining the roles of energy expenditure, physical activity, and diet in the development of adiposity and risk for secondary chronic diseases in SP-NMD subjects are currently underway. 相似文献

The prevalence of Campylobacter and Salmonella on retail poultry carcasses remains a significant public health concern. The stresses associated with transporting poultry prior to slaughter have been shown to increase pathogen populations both in the intestinal tract and on the carcass exterior. The yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii, was evaluated for its ability to reduce populations of Salmonella and Campylobacter in broiler chickens subjected to transport stress. Chicks, inoculated with individual strains of Salmonella and Campylobacter were held for 6 wk and then divided into two groups with half of the chickens receiving 10% dried yeast in the feed for 60 h. The birds were then caged and transported to simulate commercial conditions. After euthanatizing the birds, the ceca were aseptically removed and analyzed for Salmonella and Campylobacter. With no yeast treatment, transport stress caused the Salmonella colonization frequency to increase more than fivefold, from 3.3 to 16.7%. Yeast treatment significantly reduced the frequency of Salmonella colonization to lower than prestress levels, as no Salmonella were recovered from the ceca of these birds (P < 0.05). Similar results were obtained from birds challenged with a mixture of Salmonella and Campylobacter strains. Before transport, 53.3% of these chickens were positive for Salmonella. Transport stress increased the colonization rate to 67.5% in control birds, whereas the colonization of yeast-treated chickens decreased to 40% (P < 0.05). Frequency of Campylobacter isolation from the ceca was not affected by treatment, but Campylobacter populations present in the ceca were significantly reduced in the mixed strain trial (P < 0.05). 相似文献

Over a period of 4 wk, 24 10-d-old broiler hens were fed diets containing 11% vegetable oil (9% rapeseed oil, 2% soybean oil), which was added either fresh (1 meq O2/kg oil) or oxidized (156 meq O2/kg oil). The effects of the dietary treatments on nutrient digestibility were examined in a balance experiment. The antioxidative status of the animals was evaluated using plasma concentrations of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), erythrocyte hemolysis in vitro, selenium-dependent and selenium-independent activity of glutathione peroxidase in liver cell cytosolic fractions, and concentrations of tocopherols and other fat-soluble compounds with antioxidative properties (lutein, beta-carotene, and retinol) in plasma and various tissues (skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, liver, and abdominal fat). Compared to the fresh oil, the concentrations of linoleic and linolenic acid were slightly lower in oxidized oil. The concentration of alpha-tocopherol in the diet with fresh oil was an average of 80.8 mg/kg diet, whereas the diet with oxidized oil only provided 44 mg/kg. The dietary selenium content averaged 0.48 mg/kg in both diets. During the experiment, none of the animals showed symptoms of diarrhea or vitamin E deficiency. The intake of oxidized oil caused a growth depression after 2 wk. The retention of fat (P = 0.07), energy (P = 0.09), and alpha-tocopherol (P < 0.01) was lower in the group fed oxidized fat. Furthermore, these animals showed significantly higher plasma concentrations of TBARS (P < 0.01), and lower concentrations of tocopherols, lutein, beta-carotene, and retinol in plasma and tissues. 相似文献

In broiler operations, various health problems develop during the final 2 wk of the growing period, resulting in increased mortality and condemnation losses. At this stage, sickly birds were found to be systemically infected by various bacteria regardless of varied clinical signs, and the purpose of this study was to carry out thorough microbiological investigations on this problem. Thirty-one 6-wk-old broilers showing signs of illness were obtained from three farms, and bacterial isolations were carried out from the blood, liver, and hock joint. Bacteria were isolated from 87, 90, and 71% of the blood, liver, and hock joint samples, respectively. Mean bacterial counts in log10 of the blood (per milliliter) and liver (per gram) were 2.15 and 2.93, respectively. Among 132 bacterial isolates, major species were Staphylococcus (60%), Corynebacterium (18%), Escherichia coli (5%), and Stomatococcus (4%). Among 79 Staphylococcus isolates, 77 were coagulase-negative. Major species of staphylococci were S. lentus (19%), S. simulans (18%), S. cohnii (13%), S. gallinarum (10%), and S. captis (7%). In addition, six species of gram-positive and five species of gram-negative organisms were isolated. Thus, the apparent systemic infections were not caused by predominant pathogenic bacterial species, and adequately described as mixed infections. There were some significant relationships between isolated bacterial species and sampling sites, suggesting that certain organisms were abundant in the environment of a particular poultry house. These results indicate that systemic infections in market age broilers are caused by mixed bacterial species and suggest that they are caused by suppressed host antibacterial systems rather than pathogenic factors of microorganisms. 相似文献
