Implantable bioelectronics represent an emerging technology that can be integrated into the human body for diagnostic and therapeutic functions. Power supply devices are an essential component of bioelectronics to ensure their robust performance. However, conventional power sources are usually bulky, rigid, and potentially contain hazardous constituent materials. The fact that biological organisms are soft, curvilinear, and have limited accommodation space poses new challenges for power supply systems to minimize the interface mismatch and still offer sufficient power to meet clinical‐grade applications. Here, recent advances in state‐of‐the‐art nonconventional power options for implantable electronics, specifically, miniaturized, flexible, or biodegradable power systems are reviewed. Material strategies and architectural design of a broad array of power devices are discussed, including energy storage systems (batteries and supercapacitors), power devices which harvest sources from the human body (biofuel cells, devices utilizing biopotentials, piezoelectric harvesters, triboelectric devices, and thermoelectric devices), and energy transfer devices which utilize sources in the surrounding environment (ultrasonic energy harvesters, inductive coupling/radiofrequency energy harvesters, and photovoltaic devices). Finally, future challenges and perspectives are given.

Conversion of waste heat to voltage has the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of a number of critical energy sectors, such as the transportation and electricity‐generation sectors, and manufacturing processes. Thermal energy is also an abundant low‐flux source that can be harnessed to power portable/wearable electronic devices and critical components in remote off‐grid locations. As such, a number of different inorganic and organic materials are being explored for their potential in thermoelectric‐energy‐harvesting devices. Carbon‐based thermoelectric materials are particularly attractive due to their use of nontoxic, abundant source‐materials, their amenability to high‐throughput solution‐phase fabrication routes, and the high specific energy (i.e., W g?1) enabled by their low mass. Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) represent a unique 1D carbon allotrope with structural, electrical, and thermal properties that enable efficient thermoelectric‐energy conversion. Here, the progress made toward understanding the fundamental thermoelectric properties of SWCNTs, nanotube‐based composites, and thermoelectric devices prepared from these materials is reviewed in detail. This progress illuminates the tremendous potential that carbon‐nanotube‐based materials and composites have for producing high‐performance next‐generation devices for thermoelectric‐energy harvesting.

State‐of‐the‐art energy storage devices are capable of delivering reasonably high energy density (lithium ion batteries) or high power density (supercapacitors). There is an increasing need for these power sources with not only superior electrochemical performance, but also exceptional flexibility. Graphene has come on to the scene and advancements are being made in integration of various electrochemically active compounds onto graphene or its derivatives so as to utilize their flexibility. Many innovative synthesis techniques have led to novel graphene‐based hybrid two‐dimensional nanostructures. Here, the chemically integrated inorganic‐graphene hybrid two‐dimensional materials and their applications for energy storage devices are examined. First, the synthesis and characterization of different kinds of inorganic‐graphene hybrid nanostructures are summarized, and then the most relevant applications of inorganic‐graphene hybrid materials in flexible energy storage devices are reviewed. The general design rules of using graphene‐based hybrid 2D materials for energy storage devices and their current limitations and future potential to advance energy storage technologies are also discussed.

Driven by the ability to harvest waste heat into reusable electricity and the exclusive role of serving as the power generator for deep spacecraft, intensive endeavors are dedicated to enhancing the thermoelectric performance of ecofriendly materials. Herein, the most recent progress in superhigh‐performance GeTe‐based thermoelectric materials is reviewed with a focus on the crystal structures, phase transitions, resonant bondings, multiple valance bands, and phonon dispersions. These features diversify the degrees of freedom to tune the transport properties of electrons and phonons for GeTe. On the basis of the optimized carrier concentration, strategies of alignment of multiple valence bands and density‐of‐state resonant distortion are employed to further enhance the thermoelectric performance of GeTe‐based materials. To decrease the thermal conductivity, methods of strengthening intrinsic phonon–phonon interactions and introducing various lattice imperfections as scattering centers are highlighted. An overview of thermoelectric devices assembled from GeTe‐based thermoelectric materials is then presented. In conclusion, possible future directions for developing GeTe in thermoelectric applications are proposed. The achieved high thermoelectric performance in GeTe‐based thermoelectric materials with rationally established strategies can act as a reference for broader materials to tailor their thermoelectric performance.

Lead chalcogenides have long been used for space‐based and thermoelectric remote power generation applications, but recent discoveries have revealed a much greater potential for these materials. This renaissance of interest combined with the need for increased energy efficiency has led to active consideration of thermoelectrics for practical waste heat recovery systems—such as the conversion of car exhaust heat into electricity. The simple high symmetry NaCl‐type cubic structure, leads to several properties desirable for thermoelectricity, such as high valley degeneracy for high electrical conductivity and phonon anharmonicity for low thermal conductivity. The rich capabilities for both band structure and microstructure engineering enable a variety of approaches for achieving high thermoelectric performance in lead chalcogenides. This Review focuses on manipulation of the electronic and atomic structural features which makes up the thermoelectric quality factor. While these strategies are well demonstrated in lead chalcogenides, the principles used are equally applicable to most good thermoelectric materials that could enable improvement of thermoelectric devices from niche applications into the mainstream of energy technologies.

One major challenge for wearable electronics is that the state‐of‐the‐art batteries are inadequate to provide sufficient energy for long‐term operations, leading to inconvenient battery replacement or frequent recharging. Other than the pursuit of high energy density of secondary batteries, an alternative approach recently drawing intensive attention from the research community, is to integrate energy‐generation and energy‐storage devices into self‐charging power systems (SCPSs), so that the scavenged energy can be simultaneously stored for sustainable power supply. This paper reviews recent developments in SCPSs with the integration of various energy‐harvesting devices (including piezoelectric nanogenerators, triboelectric nanogenerators, solar cells, and thermoelectric nanogenerators) and energy‐storage devices, such as batteries and supercapacitors. SCPSs with multiple energy‐harvesting devices are also included. Emphasis is placed on integrated flexible or wearable SCPSs. Remaining challenges and perspectives are also examined to suggest how to bring the appealing SCPSs into practical applications in the near future.

A solid‐state thermoelectric device is attractive for diverse technological areas such as cooling, power generation and waste heat recovery with unique advantages of quiet operation, zero hazardous emissions, and long lifetime. With the rapid growth of flexible electronics and miniature sensors, the low‐cost flexible thermoelectric energy harvester is highly desired as a potential power supply. Herein, a flexible thermoelectric copper selenide (Cu2Se) thin film, consisting of earth‐abundant elements, is reported. The thin film is fabricated by a low‐cost and scalable spin coating process using ink solution with a truly soluble precursor. The Cu2Se thin film exhibits a power factor of 0.62 mW/(m K2) at 684 K on rigid Al2O3 substrate and 0.46 mW/(m K2) at 664 K on flexible polyimide substrate, which is much higher than the values obtained from other solution processed Cu2Se thin films (<0.1 mW/(m K2)) and among the highest values reported in all flexible thermoelectric films to date (≈0.5 mW/(m K2)). Additionally, the fabricated thin film shows great promise to be integrated with the flexible electronic devices, with negligible performance change after 1000 bending cycles. Together, the study demonstrates a low‐cost and scalable pathway to high‐performance flexible thin film thermoelectric devices from relatively earth‐abundant elements.

Thermoelectric materials can convert heat into electrical energy, which can potentially be used to improve the fuel efficiency of conventional heat engines. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in the thermoelectric field, where nanotechnology has played an important role. The quantum confinement effect has been shown to increase the Seebeck coefficient, while the nanostructures can effectively scatter phonons. In this review, the latest advances in thermoelectric nanomaterials were summarized and the challenges they face in thermoelectric-device fabrication were discussed. Firstly, the major problems hindering the development of nanowire-, thin-film-, and nanocrystal-based thermoelectric devices were discussed, followed by possible solutions in the subsequent sections. The unique carrier transport properties of one-dimensional nanowires that result from their distinct band structures were then examined. The distinct diffusive thermal transport, caused by boundary scattering of phonons, was also discussed. Next, the unique thermoelectric transport properties of superlattice thin films and two-dimensional electron gas were focused on. In addition, the different types of flexible thin films and strategies to improve their thermoelectric performance were described. Subsequently, the electrical transport properties of thermoelectric bulk samples consolidated from solution-processed nanocrystals, including the synthesis principles and modulation doping were discussed. Furthermore, the rational design of distinct microstructures which can selectively scatter phonons was elaborated on. Finally, we prospect for future developments in thermoelectric nanomaterials.

Single-crystal tin selenide (SnSe), a record holder of high-performance thermoelectric materials, enables high-efficient interconversion between heat and electricity for power generation or refrigeration. However, the rigid bulky SnSe cannot satisfy the applications for flexible and wearable devices. Here, a method is demonstrated to achieve ultralong single-crystal SnSe wire with rock-salt structure and high thermoelectric performance with diameters from micro- to nanoscale. This method starts from thermally drawing SnSe into a flexible fiber-like substrate, which is polycrystalline, highly flexible, ultralong, and mechanically stable. Then a CO2 laser is employed to recrystallize the SnSe core to single-crystal over the entire fiber. Both theoretical and experimental studies demonstrate that the single-crystal rock-salt SnSe fibers possess high thermoelectric properties, significantly enhancing the ZT value to 2 at 862 K. This simple and low-cost approach offers a promising path to engage the fiber-shaped single-crystal materials in applications from 1D fiber devices to multidimensional wearable fabrics.

The world is recently witnessing an explosive development of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices that demand more‐reliable power sources that combine higher energy density and longer‐term durability. Supercapacitors have become one of the most promising energy‐storage systems, as they present multifold advantages of high power density, fast charging–discharging, and long cyclic stability. However, the intrinsically low energy density inherent to traditional supercapacitors severely limits their widespread applications, triggering researchers to explore new types of supercapacitors with improved performance. Asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) assembled using two dissimilar electrode materials offer a distinct advantage of wide operational voltage window, and thereby significantly enhance the energy density. Recent progress made in the field of ASCs is critically reviewed, with the main focus on an extensive survey of the materials developed for ASC electrodes, as well as covering the progress made in the fabrication of ASC devices over the last few decades. Current challenges and a future outlook of the field of ASCs are also discussed.
