Two new benzoquinones with antifungal, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities have been isolated from liquid cultures of the coprophilous fungus Podospora anserina. The structures of anserinones A (1) and B (2) were assigned on the basis of MS and NMR results, and the absolute stereochemistry of 2 was deduced by analysis of 1H-NMR data for its (R)- and (S)-2-phenylbutyryl ester derivatives.  相似文献

Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are the most abundant immune cells in inflammatory gingival sites of patients with early onset periodontitis, localized juvenile periodontitis, and rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP). In the latter, the large number of PMN in connective tissue may explain the marked gingival destruction. Because interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a potent PMN chemoattractant, we evaluated circulating levels and gingival mRNA expression of IL-8. We found high IL-8 plasma levels as well as strong IL-8 mRNA expression in both epithelial and connective gingival cells from patients with RPP. Moreover, the gingival PMN themselves contained IL-8 mRNA, suggesting an autoamplification of PMN recruitment and activation in the gingiva. We also measured the expression of adhesion molecules at the PMN surface as well as the oxidative burst in whole blood from 14 patients with RPP, using flow cytometry to avoid irrelevant stimulations and to analyze single cells. In RPP patients, resting PMN showed reduced L-selectin, Lewis x, and sialyl Lewis x antigen expression as well as increased H2O2 production. These modifications of PMN adhesion molecule expression, together with their increased basal oxidative burst and excessive IL-8 production, may contribute to the noxious inflammatory reaction, which may in turn be autopotentiated by PMN production of IL-8. In addition, PMN showed a lack of increased response (H2O2 production) to formyl peptides after ex vivo priming with IL-8, possibly owing to IL-8 desensitization that may be involved in the increased susceptibility of RPP patients to infection. After appropriate treatment of RPP, the reduction in inflammation was associated with a return to control levels of both plasma IL-8 and PMN functions, suggesting that these features are linked.  相似文献

Presents the minutes representing the official record of the actions of the American Psychological Association (APA) taken during 1993 by both the Board of Directors and the Council of Representatives. The report addresses action taken in the areas of elections, appointments, awards, membership, and human resources. Membership information includes lists of persons elected to initial membership in the APA in 1993, members who died in 1993, members who resigned in 1993, members who were reinstated during 1993, and members elected to initial APA fellowship status effective as of January 1, 1994. The report also discusses action in the areas of ethics, Board of Directors, divisions and state and provincial associations, organization of the APA, convention affairs, educational affairs, professional affairs, scientific affairs, public interest, Central Office, financial affairs, and communications concerning outside organizations. These minutes are the official record of the actions of the Association taken during the year by both the Board of Directors (the Board) and the Council of Representatives (Council). The roll of representatives was called at each Council meeting, and more than a quorum answered to their names. Reference is made in these minutes to various reports, some of which will be published elsewhere. Copies of these reports were distributed to Council and are on file in the Central Office. As long as the supply lasts, extra copies of many of the reports are available from the Central Office. These minutes are arranged in topical rather than chronological order, and subheadings are used when appropriate. The main topical headings are I. Minutes of Meetings; II. Elections, Awards, Membership, and Human Resources; III. Ethics; IV. Board of Directors; V. Divisions and State and Provincial Associations; VI. Organization of the APA; VII. Publications and Communications; VIII. Convention Affairs; IX. Educational Affairs; X. Professional Affairs; XI. Scientific Affairs; XII. Public Interest; XIII. Ethnic Minority Affairs; XIV. International Affairs; XV. Central Office; and XVI. Financial Affairs. Changes to the language of the American Psychological Association (APA) Bylaws, Association Rules, or motions of the items are noted as follows throughout these proceedings: Bracketed material is to be deleted; underlined material is to be added. The Sixth International Congress on Schizophrenia Research (ICOSR) took place in Colorado Springs, Colorado, April 12-16, 1997, where over 1,000 scientists presented and listened to the latest developments in the search for the cause and treatment of schizophrenia. The ICOSR is sponsored by Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, Case Western Reserve University, and the William K. Warren Foundation. The National Institute of Mental Health and several pharmaceutical companies contributed generously to the meeting. The ICOSR is co-organized by Dr. Carol A. Tamminga, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, University of Maryland at Baltimore, and Dr. S. Charles Schulz, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. The William K. Warren Research Award is given to a senior investigator, who has made outstanding contributions to our understanding of schizophrenia. The fifth William K. Warren Research Award was presented to Dr. Philip S. Holzman in recognition of his contributions to the identification of eye-tracking abnormalities as a potential phenotypic marker of the illness and also in recognition of his work as a lifelong mentor for schizophrenia researchers. The ICOSR Young Investigator Awards are presented to junior investigators who have demonstrated the potential to make significant contributions to research on schizophrenia. These awards promote scientific development by enabling these young researchers to attend the meeting. There were 30 Young Investigator Award winners. The ICOSR meeting is organized into four sessions: (1) a morning plenary session; (2) a plenary lecture; (3) a poster session; and (4) concurrent afternoon oral sessions. The morning plenary sessions are comprised of a set of 30-minute lectures, which provide an overview of a particular topic area relevant to schizophrenia research. The plenary lecture is an invited lecture on a basic topic related to current research efforts in schizophrenia. The poster sessions provide a forum for the presentation of prepublication reports of basic and clinical science projects. The afternoon sessions are a collection of approximately 10 focused presentations on current research projects related to a specific topic area. The purpose of this report is to provide an account of the proceedings from the plenary and afternoon oral sessions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia has a different evolution in children and adults. Complete remission is achieved in 70-85% of the latter, but only 25 to 35% have a prolonged disease-free survival. AIM: To assess the treatment outcome of adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Chile. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical files of 51 adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated according to the national protocol for antineoplastic drugs, in a public hospital of Santiago. RESULTS: Mean age of patients was 35.9 years old and 53% were younger than 20 years old. Complete remission was achieved in 64%. Early mortality occurred in 22%, mostly due to infections. Treatment failure occurred in 16%. Global survival was 17 months and global survival at 5 years was 24%. Prognostic criteria of the protocol, defined a low risk group that had a complete remission of 100%, no early deaths and 5 year disease-free survival of 53%. The group defined as having high risk had a complete remission of 47%, a 29% early mortality and a 5 years disease-free survival of 6%. CONCLUSIONS: Aiming to improve treatment results in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, efforts should be made to improve the management of febrile neutropenic patients and to intensify chemotherapy.  相似文献

Psychologists' work was cited in the Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education (1954). One criticism of the citation was that psychology could be used to overturn the Brown decision and return the country to segregation. A historical examination of such an attempt to overturn Brown in the early 1960s on the basis of new psychological knowledge shows that psychology was not persuasive in the face of the civil rights movement. The failure of segregationists to overturn Brown with psychological experts underscores how psychology is ineluctably bound to the larger society.
