Nanoparticle thin-film coatings applied to boiling surfaces using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method demonstrated significant enhancement in the pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) and nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient. Up to 100% enhancement of the critical heat flux and over 100% enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient were observed for pool boiling of nickel wires coated with different thin-films of silica nanoparticles. Surface characterization revealed that the surface wettability changed drastically with the application of these coatings, while causing virtually no change in the surface roughness. It is concluded that the nanoporous structure coupled with the chemical constituency of these coatings leads to the enhanced boiling behavior.  相似文献

Analysis on hysteresis in nucleate pool boiling heat transfer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Many experiments reported for nucleate pool boiling heat transfer from microelectronic assemblies or porous surfaces in dielectric fluids have shown the existence of hysteresis phenomenon, which is known as a temperature overshoot (TOS) in boiling incipience and constrains engineering applications. Here, theoretical analysis has been carried out. It confirms that hysteresis may occur during both the boiling incipience and the boiling development. Hence, a new type of hysteresis, termed Temperature Deviation (TD), is described. Using thermodynamic nucleation, the physical mechanisms for both TOS and TD are analyzed in detail. Three parameters for quantitatively understanding the hysteresis phenomenon and possible measures for remedying it are proposed and discussed.  相似文献

In order to elucidate boiling heat transfer characteristics for each tube and the critical heat flux (CHF) for tube bundles, an experimental investigation of pool and flow boiling of Freon-113 at 0.1 MPa was performed using two typical tube arrangements. A total of fifty heating tubes of 14 mm diameter, equipped with thermocouples and cartridge heaters, were arrayed at pitches of 18.2 and 21.0 mm to simulate both square in-line and equilateral staggered bundles. For the flow boiling tests the same bundles as were used in pool boiling were installed in a vertical rectangular channel, to which the fluid was supplied with an approach velocity varying from 0.022 to 0.22 m/s. It was found in this study that the boiling heat transfer coefficient of each tube in a bundle was higher than that for an isolated single tube in pool boiling. This enhancement increases for tubes at higher locations, but decreases as heat flux is increased. At heat fluxes exceeding certain values, the heat transfer coefficient becomes the same as that for an isolated tube. As the heat flux approaches the CHF, flow pulsations occurred in the pool boiling experiments although the heat transfer coefficient was invariant even under this situation. The approach velocity has an appreciable effect on heat transfer up to a certain level of heat flux. In this range of heat flux, the heat transfer coefficient exceeds the values observed for pool boiling. An additive method with two contributions, i.e., single phase convection and boiling, was used to predict the heat transfer coefficient for bundles. The predicted results showed reasonable agreement with the measured results. The critical heat flux in tube bundles tended to increase as more bubbles were rising through the tube clearance. © 1998 Scripta Technica, Heat Trans Jpn Res, 27(4): 312–325, 1998  相似文献

Pool boiling and CHF experiments were performed for vertical, rectangular parallel-plate channels immersed in the dielectric liquid FC-72 at atmospheric pressure to elucidate the effects of geometrical confinement in immersion cooled electronics applications. Heat transfer enhancement in the low flux region of the nucleate boiling curve was observed for channel spacings near and below expected bubble departure diameters, but was widely different for two different heater materials. Relative degradation of CHF with decreasing channel spacing was found to be a strong function of channel aspect ratio and independent of surface material and finish.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the effects of wettability (contact angle) and pitch on nanoscale evaporation and pool boiling heat transfer of a liquid argon thin film on a horizontal copper substrate topped with cubic nano-pillars. The liquid–solid potential was incrementally altered to vary the contact angle between hydrophilic (~0°) and hydrophobic (~127°), and the pitch (distance between nano-pillars) was varied between 21.7 and 106.6?Å to observe the resultant effect on boiling heat transfer enhancement. For each contact angle, the superheat was gradually increased to initiate nucleate boiling and eventually pass the critical heat flux (CHF) into the film boiling regime. The CHF increases with pitch, and tends to decrease substantially with increasing contact angle. A maximum overall heat flux of 1.59?×?108?W/m2 occurs at the largest pitch investigated (106.6?Å), and as the contact angle increases the superheat required to reach the CHF condition also increases. Finally, in certain cases of small pitch and large contact angle, the liquid film was seen to transition to a Cassie–Baxter state, which greatly hindered heat transfer.  相似文献

The drying process of a macrolayer on a 15 mm diameter boiling surface was observed with high speed video in the region of nucleate and of transition boiling close to the critical heat flux (CHF). It was found that the macrolayer rests beneath a large vapor mass. It partially dries in nucleate boiling and completely dries in transition boiling at the detachment of the vapor mass. The macrolayer thickness at CHF and in transition boiling was determined on the basis of the energy balance relation proposed by Katto and Yokoya. The macrolayer thickness at low heat flux was obtained by decreasing CHF with downward-facing heating surfaces and agreed well with the correlation proposed previously by the present authors. The macrolayer thickness in transition boiling with a vertical surface also agrees fairly well with the correlation, when the heat flux at macrolayer formation, given on the nucleate boiling curve, is extrapolated to surface superheat of transition boiling and when the surface temperature at macrolayer formation is equal to a time-averaged value.

Experimental studies were made on heat transfer on a horizontal platinum wire during nucleate pool boiling in nonazeotropic refrigerant binary mixtures at pressures of 0.25 to 0.7 MPa and at heat fluxes up to CHF. The boiling features of the mixtures and the single-component substances were observed by photography. The relationship between the boiling behavior and the reduction of heat transfer coefficients in binary mixtures is discussed in order to propose a correlation useful for predicting the present experimental data over a wide range of low to high heat fluxes. It is shown that the correlation is applicable to alcoholic mixtures. The physical meaning of k, which was introduced to evaluate the effect of heat flux on the reduction of a heat transfer coefficient, is clarified based on measured nucleate pool boiling heat transfer data and visual observations of the boiling features. © 1998 Scripta Technica, Heat Trans Jpn Res, 27(7): 535–549, 1998  相似文献

Experiments for pool boiling of deionised water and acetone with different surfactant, 95% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Triton X-100 and octadecylamine, have been conducted under atmospheric pressure to investigate the effect of surface wettability. The boiling curves for different concentrations of surfactant solution on both smooth and roughened surfaces were obtained. The results show that the addition of surfactant can enhance the water boiling heat transfer, and the enhancement is more obvious for SDS solution; but has little influence on the acetone boiling curve. While the roughened surface enhanced the heat transfer for Triton X-100 solution, it also decreased the heat transfer coefficient for SDS solution. All these can be explained by including the changing of surface wettability, which has been neglected for a long time and should be an important parameter influencing boiling heat transfer. By incorporating such effects, the modified Mikic-Rohsenow pool boiling model, we proposed, can predict these experimental data well.  相似文献

For several decades, a porous surface has been recognized as an efficient medium to increase boiling performance in a nucleate boiling regime. Most feasible porous surfaces have been studied in millimeter and micron-sized domains. It has been believed that a higher wall superheat is required to commence incipient nucleate boiling under a submicron regime. In this study, we demonstrate that a significantly enhanced pool boiling heat transfer is observed in a submicron regime through three dimensionally interconnected hybrid pores: the Alumina sponge-like nano-porous structure (ASNPS). The structural uniqueness of the ASNPS leads to an enlarged surface area, increases the potential number of the active nucleation site density, and improves the vapor–liquid menisci through the reentrant pore. Simultaneously, by changing the surface wettability with a hydrophobic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) coating, the number of active nucleation site density is improved. Eventually, the combination of the ASNPS and hydrophobic SAM coating can achieve substantial heat transfer coefficient (HTC) enhancement in the nucleate boiling. Also, the thickness of the ASNPS is a critical issue to adequately augment the HTC in pool boiling. The thickness of the ASNPS is optimized by examining the boiling performance of the ASNPS fabricated in different amounts of anodizing times. A classical mechanistic model from literature was modified and compared with the experimentally obtained data. The modified mechanistic model – with the combination of forced-convection and thin liquid film evaporation – showed reasonable predictions.  相似文献

In nucleate boiling at high heat flux, a liquid layer, known as the ‘macrolayer’, is trapped between the heating surface and the vapour masses. An analysis of the mechanism of formation of this macrolayer is presented. Based on the analysis, a theoretical expression has been derived for the initial thickness of the macrolayer. The agreement between the theoretical values of the initial macrolayer thickness and the experimental values published in the literature is reasonably good.  相似文献

It is well known that nanoparticles deposited on a heating surface during nanofluids boiling can change the characteristics of the heating surface and increase the critical heat flux (CHF) dramatically. We considered a new approach to investigate the nanoparticle surface effect on CHF enhancement using surfaces modified with artificial micro, nano, and micro/nano structures similar to deposited nanoparticle structures through the anodic oxidation on the zirconium alloy heater. We examined the effect of the capillary wicking action ability on the CHF enhancement due to the micro, nano, and micro/nano structured surfaces. The results demonstrated that the CHF enhancement on the modified surfaces was a consequence of the capillary wicking action ability of the artificial micro/nano structures through the high-speed visualization of the capillary wicking action.  相似文献

Based on the fractal distribution of nucleation sites present on heating surfaces, a new comprehensive model is developed for the nucleate pool boiling of pure liquid at low to high heat fluxes including the critical heat flux (CHF). The proposed model is expressed as a function of total number, minimum and maximum sizes of active nucleation sites, fractal dimension, superheat temperature, and properties of fluids. No additional empirical constant is introduced in the proposed model. This fractal model contains less empirical constants than the conventional models. The model predictions are in good agreement with the available experimental data.  相似文献

This paper deals with a study of enhanced critical heat flux (CHF) and burnout heat flux (BHF) in pool boiling of water with suspended silica nanoparticles using Nichrome wires and ribbons. Previously the current authors and other researchers have reported three-digit percentage increase in critical heat flux in silica nanofluids. This study investigates the effect of various heater surface dimensions, cross-sectional shapes as well as surface modifications on pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of water and water-based nanofluids. Our data suggest that the CHF and BHF decrease as heater surface area increases. For concentrations from 0.1 vol% to 2 vol%, the deposition of the particles on the wire allows high heat transfer through inter-agglomerate pores, resulting in a nearly 3-fold increase in burnout heat flux at very low concentrations. The nanoparticle deposition plays a major role through variation in porosity. The CHF enhancement is non-monotonic with respect to concentration. As the concentration is increased, the CHF and BHF decrease prior to increasing again at higher concentrations. Results show a maximum of 270% CHF enhancement for ribbon-type heaters. The surface morphology of the heater was investigated using SEM and EDS analyses, and it was inferred that the 2 vol% concentration deposition coating had higher porosity and rate of deposition compared with 0.2 vol% case.  相似文献

A new experimental work was made to discover a principle mechanism of the burnout in pool boiling. Here, we directly observed a liquid layer structure under a massive vapor clot and the liquid layer-related burnout phenomenon. Based on the present observations, we have made a visual model for the formation and dryout of a liquid film under its vapor environment. At the formation process, liquid is trapped in interleaved space between growing bubbles and surface and the liquid trapping continues between coalesced bubbles and surface. In the dryout process, we especially observed vapor “holes” made by spontaneous breakup of discrete nucleating bubbles inside a vapor clot. The burnout can be triggered by the evaporation of the liquid film region expanded from rims of the holes.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of surface wettability on pool boiling heat transfer. Nano-silica particle coatings were used to vary the wettability of the copper surface from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic by modifying surface topography and chemistry. Experimental results show that critical heat flux (CHF) values are higher in the hydrophilic region. Conversely, CHF values are lower in the hydrophobic region. The experimental CHF data of the modified surface do not fit the classical models. Therefore, this study proposes a simple model to build the nexus between the surface wettability and the growth of bubbles on the heating surface.  相似文献
