Carbon fiber composite connections for hollow-core precast concrete wall panels have been investigated with respect to bond behavior. A panel assembly made up of three precast concrete walls was loaded in the in-plane direction using a cyclic quasi-static load, which was transferred to the wall interface as a shear force. The application of the carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite was varied in the covered area, number and orientation of plies, and the concrete surface preparation. An expression, which compares well with the experimental findings, is presented for the effective bond length of carbon fiber composite sheets. The effective bond length of the connection depends on the peel-off shear strength of the concrete, the maximum tensile strain in the composite, the modulus of elasticity of the composite, and thickness of the composite plate.  相似文献

Repair, strengthening, and retrofit of reinforced and prestressed concrete members have become increasingly important issues as the World’s infrastructure deteriorates with time. Buildings and bridges are often in need of repair or strengthening to accommodate larger live loads as traffic and building occupancies change. In addition, inadequate design and detailing for seismic and other severe natural events has resulted in considerable structural damage and loss of life, particularly in reinforced concrete buildings. Numerous buildings and bridges suffer damage during such events and need to be repaired. The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite fabric bonded to the surface of concrete members is comparatively simple, quick and virtually unnoticeable after installation. The use of composites has become routine for increasing both the flexural and shear capacities of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams. Earthquake retrofit of bridge and building structures has relied increasingly on composite wrapping of columns, beams and joints to provide confinement and increase ductility. This paper presents the results of cyclic testing of three large-scale reinforced concrete slab–column connections. Each of the specimens was a half-scale model of an interior slab–column connection common to flat-slab buildings. The specimens were reinforced according to ACI-318 code requirements and included slab shear reinforcement. While supporting a slab gravity load equivalent to dead load plus 30% of the live load, the specimens were subjected to an increasing cyclic lateral loading protocol up to 5% lateral drift. The specimens were subjected to the same loading protocol after they were repaired with epoxy crack sealers and CFRP sheet on the surfaces of the slab. Repair with epoxy and CFRP on the top surface of the slab was able to restore both initial stiffness and ultimate strength of the original specimen.  相似文献

Self-centering precast concrete walls have been found to provide excellent seismic resistance. Such systems typically exhibit low energy dissipation, requiring supplementary dissipating components to improve their seismic performance. Mild steel shear connectors can provide an economical energy dissipating element. The design and analysis of steel shear connectors for a new precast wall system has been undertaken. A series of finite-element analyses were conducted to investigate the behavior of different types of connectors. Emerged from these analyses is a oval-shaped connector (O-connector) that provided satisfactory force-displacement behavior and appeared well suited for the new wall system in high seismic regions. An extensive experimental test program was then conducted to verify the performance of the chosen O-connector, which confirmed the expected response with sufficient energy dissipation. The experimental data demonstrated good correlation with the finite-element model developed, providing satisfactory confidence in the finite-element technique used for the development of the different connectors.  相似文献

This research study examines the use of a precast concrete panel system for blast protection of facilities with exterior light gauge metal stud walls. The structural retrofit is designed for the specific case where internal operation of the facility cannot be interrupted. To meet this design requirement, a series of precast concrete panels are installed exterior to the building envelope with connections to the foundation at ground level and to the steel building frame at upper floor levels. To validate the retrofit concept, two explosive detonations representing relatively low and high blast threat levels are examined. An exterior insulation and finishing system (EIFS) clad stud wall and a precast concrete protected stud wall are examined under each demand level. The measured responses of both systems are compared with each other and with basic dynamic predictive models. In addition, a finite element study of the connection is conducted to estimate support demands for the blast retrofit. The research results show that the precast wall system provides effective protection of the exterior wall. The research also shows that EIFS clad metal stud wall systems retain significant resilience under blast demands. The dynamic responses of the systems are predictable using standard elastic-plastic dynamic modeling assumptions.  相似文献

The U.S. Interstate 80 bridge over State Street in Salt Lake City is very near the Wasatch fault, which is active and capable of producing large earthquakes. The bridge was designed and built in 1965 according to the 1961 American Association of State Highway Officials specifications, which did not consider earthquake-induced forces or displacements. The bridge consists of reinforced concrete bents supporting steel plate welded girders. The bents are supported on cast-in-place concrete piles and pile caps. A seismic retrofit design was developed using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, which was implemented in the summer of 2000 and the summer of 2001, to improve the displacement ductility of the bridge. The seismic retrofit included column jacketing, as well as wrapping of the bent cap and bent cap-column joints for confinement, flexural, and shear strength increase. This paper describes the specifications developed for the CFRP composite column jackets and composite bent wrap. The specifications included provisions for materials, constructed thickness based on strength capacity, and an environmental durability reduction factor. Surface preparation, finish coat requirements, quality assurance provisions, which included sampling and testing, and constructability issues regarding the application of fiber composite materials in the retrofit of concrete bridges are also described.  相似文献

An experimental research program is described regarding the use of externally applied carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) jackets for seismic rehabilitation of reinforced concrete interior beam-column joints, which were designed for gravity loads. The joints had steel reinforcement details that are known to be inadequate by current seismic codes in terms of joint shear capacity due to the absence of transverse steel hoops and bond capacity of beam bottom steel reinforcing bars at the joint. Lap splicing of beam bottom steel reinforcement at the joint using externally applied longitudinal CFRP composite laminates is investigated. Improvement of joint shear capacity using diagonal CFRP composite laminates is another strengthening scheme employed. Concrete crack widths for the as-built specimens and the extent of CFRP delamination for the rehabilitated specimens at various drift ratios are reported. The test results indicate that CFRP jackets are an effective rehabilitation measure for improving the seismic performance of existing beam-column joints with inadequate seismic details in terms of increased joint shear strength and inelastic rotation capacity. In addition, CFRP laminates are effective rehabilitation measures for overcoming problems associated with beam bottom steel bars that have inadequate embedment into the beam-column joints.  相似文献

The feasibility and efficiency of a seismic retrofit intervention using externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer composites on existing reinforced concrete frame systems, designed prior to the introduction of modern standard seismic design code provisions in the mid-1970s, are herein presented, based on analytical and experimental investigations on beam-column joint subassemblies and frame systems. A multilevel retrofit strategy, following hierarchy of strength considerations, is adopted to achieve the desired performance. The expected sequence of events is visualized through capacity-demand curves within M-N performance domains. An analytical procedure able to predict the enhanced nonlinear behavior of the panel zone region, due to the application of CFRP laminates, in terms of shear strength (principal stresses) versus shear deformation, has been developed and is herein proposed as a fundamental step for the definition of a proper retrofit solution. The experimental results from quasi-static tests on beam-column subassemblies, either interior and exterior, and on three-storey three-bay frame systems in their as-built and CFRP retrofitted configurations, provided very satisfactory confirmation of the viability and reliability of the adopted retrofit solution as well as of the proposed analytical procedure to predict the actual sequence of events.  相似文献

The opportunities provided by the use of modern repair schemes for the seismic retrofit of existing RC structures were assessed on a comparative experimental study of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and more-conventional seismic retrofitting techniques for the repair of reinforced concrete members and masonry walls of bare and infilled RC frames, respectively, damaged because of cyclic loading. Four 1-story, one-bay, one-third-scale frame specimens are tested under cyclic horizontal loading up to a drift level of 4%—two bare frames with spirals or stirrups as shear reinforcement, respectively, and two infilled frames with weak infills and spirals or stirrups as shear reinforcement, respectively. The applied repair techniques are mainly based on the use of thin epoxy resin infused under pressure into the crack system of the damaged RC joint bodies or on the additional use of CFRP plates to the surfaces of the damaged structural RC members as external reinforcement and the use of a polymer modified cement mortar or two-sided diagonal CFRP fabrics for the damaged infill masonry walls. After repair, specimens were retested in the same way. Conclusions concerning the comparison of the effectiveness between conventional and CFRP seismic retrofitting applied techniques on the basis of maximum cycles load, loading stiffness, and hysteretic energy absorption capabilities of the tested specimens are drawn.  相似文献

Precast/prestressed concrete sandwich panels consist of two concrete wythes separated by a rigid insulation foam layer and are generally used as walls or slabs in thermal insulation applications. Commonly used connectors between the two wythes, such as steel trusses or concrete stems, penetrate the insulation layer causing a thermal bridge effect, which reduces thermal efficiency. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite shell connectors between the two concrete wythes are used in this research as horizontal shear transfer reinforcement. The design criterion is to establish composite action, in which both wythes resist flexural loads as one unit, while maintaining insulation across the two concrete wythes of the panel. The experiments carried out in this research show that hybrid GFRP/steel reinforced sandwich panels can withstand out-of-plane loads while providing resistance to horizontal shear between the two concrete wythes. An analytical method is developed for modeling the horizontal shear transfer enhancement using a shear flow approach. In addition, a truss model is built, which predicts the panel deflections observed in the experiments with reasonable accuracy.  相似文献

Advancements in fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) have made this an attractive material for rehabilitation and strengthening of bridge superstructures. FRP has primarily been used with the intention of increasing the bending strength of bridge members. However, this paper investigates the use of externally placed FRP strips to increase shear capacity of short-span, 5.7?m (19?ft), precast concrete channel beam bridges. A statewide survey revealed that as many as 389 bridges in the state of Arkansas are comprised of these members. Notably, beams within these bridges were designed under provisions that did not require shear reinforcement. In this research, four sections were retrofitted using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips and load tested to failure to measure the repair effectiveness. The performance of the retrofitted sections far exceeded that of unretrofitted sections. It was concluded that the addition of the CFRP repair increased the deflection ductility at least 123%. In addition, beams retrofitted with the CFRP strips experienced at least 26% more deflection after the initiation of a shear crack; therefore reducing the risk of a catastrophic failure.  相似文献

Due to corrosion and the continuous demand to increase traffic loads, there is a need for an effective system which can be used to repair and/or strengthen steel bridges and structures. This paper describes an experimental program, recently completed, to investigate the fundamental behavior of steel–concrete composite scaled bridge beams strengthened with new high modulus carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (HM CFRP) materials. The behavior of the beams under overloading conditions and fatigue loading conditions was studied as well as the possible presence of shear lag at the interface of the steel surface and the CFRP strengthening material. The test results are compared to an analytical model based on the fundamental principles of equilibrium and compatibility, to predict the behavior of the strengthened steel–concrete composite beams. Based on the findings of this research work, combined with other work in the literature, a design guideline is proposed for the use of HM CFRP for strengthening the steel flexural members typically used for bridges and structures.  相似文献

Behavior of FRP Strengthened Infill Walls under In-Plane Seismic Loading   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The present paper investigates the suitability and effectiveness of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) in strengthening and/or repairing unreinforced masonry infill walls in reinforced concrete frames which are subjected to in-plane seismic/cyclic loading. For this purpose, a detailed experimental program was conducted. Specimen geometry, test setup, instrumentation, and a loading procedure that simulates earthquake loading are presented in a detailed fashion. Results of experimental observations are discussed in the form of load-displacement hysteretic loops and envelopes; column profiles; strain diagrams, and wall shear distortion. The test results, in general, indicate that the use of glass FRP (GFRP) sheets as strengthening materials provides a degree of enhancement to the infill wall, upgrades its deformation capacity, and makes the wall work as one unit. These results thus show great potential for externally bonded GFRP sheets in upgrading and strengthening the infill walls under in-plane seismic loads.  相似文献

Masonry structures have demonstrated their seismic vulnerability during recent world seismic events. This paper investigates in-plane seismic performance of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls before and after they are retrofit using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials. An assessment of available design formulas for evaluating both the in-plane performance of URM walls and the contribution of FRP strengthening systems was performed. Walls with two configurations of the FRP reinforcement have been analyzed: one based on FRP strips installed parallel to the mortar joints, the other characterized by FRP strips arranged along the diagonals of the wall. Based on shear–compression tests carried out on FRP-strengthened masonry walls available in the literature, a comparison between theoretical and experimental data is performed. A discussion about the FRP strains at failure of the walls is provided and values of effective FRP strains to be used for design purposes are proposed.  相似文献

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are widely used for strengthening reinforced concrete structures because of their superior properties. Reliable performance of the bond between the external FRP and the concrete in maintaining the composite action between them is crucial for this strengthening technique to be effective. To fully understand and model this bond behavior, a rigorous bond-slip law is essential. This paper presents an experimental study in which the displacement fields in a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)-to-concrete double shear test were measured using the nondestructive and noncontact electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) technique. Full-field in-plane displacements were measured in 33 CFRP specimens with concrete strengths varying from 23 to 69?MPa. The measurement results were used to infer the bond-slip behavior between the FRP and the concrete. The inferred bond-slip curves include a nonlinear ascending branch and a descending branch. The strength of concrete is found to have significant effect on the peak bond stress but little effect on the slip corresponding to the peak bond stress. A logarithmic model and a simpler parabolic model are proposed to represent the experimental bond-slip constitutive curves.  相似文献

The research presented in this study involves full-scale experimental evaluation of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) rehabilitation for existing beam-column joints designed for gravity load with common pre-1970s deficient reinforcement details when subjected to cyclic loading. Numerous studies have demonstrated effectiveness of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials for retrofitting the deteriorating RC structures. Although these materials are widely used in bridges, their applications in buildings have been somewhat limited. In particular, the experimental investigations on external FRP retrofit of deficient beam-column joints have not thoroughly been investigated and they are mainly on scaled-down specimens. The failure of these subassemblies, which possess lack of shear reinforcement within the joint core and shortly embedded positive beam reinforcement, would possibly result in catastrophic collapse of reinforced concrete frame structure during an earthquake event. Recognizing the urgent need to upgrade these structural subassemblies, the current investigation uses CFRP retrofit techniques to enhance the performance of such deficient joints. Experimental variables studied entail the developed CFRP retrofit configurations, and magnitude of the applied column axial load. Comparative analysis of the lateral loads versus drift hysteresis loops, stiffness degradation, and total dissipated energy curves of three as-built and three corresponding CFRP-retrofitted RC joints revealed that significant improvement in the shear capacity of the upgraded joints occurred. More importantly, the slippage of short embedded beam positive reinforcement into the joint was substantially controlled due to the developed CFRP retrofit. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of CFRP retrofit configurations in enhancing the structural performance of actual size connections.  相似文献

The State Street Bridge, in Salt Lake City, was designed and built in 1965 according to the 1961 AASHO specifications; the design did not include earthquake-induced forces or displacements since only wind loads were considered. The bridge consists of four reinforced concrete (RC) bents supporting composite welded steel girders; the bents are supported on cast-in-place concrete piles and pile caps. A vulnerability analysis of the bridge was conducted that determined deficiencies in (1) confinement of column lap splice regions, (2) anchorage of longitudinal column bars in the bent cap, (3) confinement of column plastic hinge zones, and (4) shear capacity of columns and bent cap–column joints. Seismic retrofit designs using carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) composites and steel jackets were performed and compared for three design spectra, including the 10% probability of exceedance in 250 years earthquake. The CFRP composite design was selected for implementation and application of the composite was carried out in the summer of 2000 and 2001, while the bridge was in service. The paper describes the CFRP composite design, which, in addition to column jackets, implemented an “ankle wrap” for improving joint shear strength and a “U-strap” for improving anchorage of column bars in the bent cap; other retrofit measures were implemented, such as bumper brackets and a deck slab retrofit. A capacity versus demand evaluation of the as-built and retrofitted bents is presented.  相似文献

Past experimental tests on a full-scale masonry wall with an opening evidenced the key role of the spandrel panel in the in-plane nonlinear response of the system. Recent seismic codes do not provide specific criteria to assess and to strengthen existing masonry spandrel panels with inorganic matrix-grid (IMG) composites. Numerical finite-element (FE) analyses are used to deepen the knowledge about the nonlinear response of masonry walls and the role of the IMG strengthening system. The comparison of experimental and numerical results contributes to the development of a simplified analytical model to assess the influence of the external reinforcement system on the in-plane seismic response of masonry wall systems. Some hints about the strengthening design that could change the failure mode from brittle shear to ductile flexure are given. Finally, a further enhancement of the IMG strengthening system is proposed to avoid the undesirable splitting phenomena attributable to compression forces and to exploit the full compressive strength of masonry against bending moments.  相似文献

This paper summarizes field-testing of eight decked bulb-tee girder bridges as well as development of three-dimensional finite-element (FE) models. Using the calibrated 3D FE models, parametric studies have been performed to study the effect of shear connectors and intermediate diaphragms on live-load distribution and connector forces. It was found that: (1) in all cases studied, the live- load distribution factor (DF) for a single-lane loaded bridge was smaller than one for a double-lane loaded bridge; (2) connector forces caused by wheel loads were not uniform along the longitudinal joint—adding intermediate diaphragms tended to reduce the difference among horizontal shear forces in connectors; (3) the maximum horizontal shear force increased with the increase of the connector spacing—intermediate diaphragms reduced the maximum horizontal shear force in connectors; (4) the maximum vertical shear force and in-plane normal tensile force in connectors do not necessarily increase with the increase of the connector spacing; and (5) the summation of connector forces in each direction along the longitudinal joint remained constant irrespective of the number of connectors in the joint.  相似文献

A number of older bridges were constructed with floor systems consisting of a noncomposite concrete slab over steel girders. A potentially economical means of strengthening these floor systems is to connect the existing concrete slab and steel girders with postinstalled shear connectors to permit the development of composite action. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of this concept. Five large-scale noncomposite beams were constructed, and four of these were retrofitted with postinstalled shear connectors and tested under static load. The retrofitted composite beams were designed as partially composite with a 30% shear connection ratio. A noncomposite beam was also tested as a baseline specimen. Test results showed that the strength and stiffness of existing noncomposite bridge girders can be increased significantly. Further, excellent ductility of the strengthened partially composite girders was achieved by placing the postinstalled shear connectors near zero-moment regions to reduce slip demand on the connectors. The test results also showed that current simplified design approaches commonly used for partially composite beams in buildings provide good predictions of the strength and stiffness of partially composite bridge girders strengthened using postinstalled shear connectors.  相似文献
