Oxidation of ZrB2 + SiC composites is investigated using isothermal measurements to study the effects of temperature, time, and gas flow on oxidation behavior and microstructural evolution. A test method called dynamic nonequilibrium thermal gravimetric analysis (DNE‐TGA), which eliminates oxidation during the heating ramp, has been developed to monitor mass change from the onset of an isothermal hold period (15 min) as a function temperature (1000°C–1600°C) and gas flow (50 and 200 mL/min). In comparing isothermal to nonisothermal TGA measurements, the scale thicknesses from isothermal tests are up to 4 times greater, indicating that oxidation kinetics are faster for isothermal testing, where the oxide scale thickness is 110 μm after 15 min at 1600°C in air. Isothermal oxidation followed parabolic kinetics with a mass gain that is temperature dependent from 1000°C–1600°C. The mass gain increased from ~5 to 45 g/m2 and parabolic rate constants increased from 0.037 to 2.2 g2/m4·s over this temperature range. The effect of flow velocity on oxidation is not significant under the given laminar flow environment where the gas boundary layer is calculated to be 4 mm. These values are consistent with diffusion of oxygen through the glass‐ceramic surface layer as rate limiting.  相似文献

To protect the carbon/carbon (C/C) composites from oxidation, an outer ultra‐high‐temperature ceramics (UHTCs) HfB2‐SiC coating was prepared on SiC‐coated C/C composites by in situ reaction method. The outer HfB2‐SiC coating consists of HfB2 and SiC, which are synchronously obtained. During the heat treatment process, the formed fluid silicon melt is responsible for the preparation of the outer HfB2‐SiC coating. The HfB2‐SiC/SiC coating could protect the C/C from oxidation for 265 h with only 0.41 × 10?2 g/cm2 weight loss at 1773 K in air. During the oxidation process, SiO2 glass and HfO2 are generated. SiO2 glass has a self‐sealing ability, which can cover the defects in the coating, thus blocking the penetration of oxygen and providing an effective protection for the C/C substrate. In addition, SiO2 glass can react with the formed HfO2, thus forming the HfSiO4 phase. Owing to the “pinning effect” of HfSiO4 phase, crack deflecting and crack termination are occurred, which will prevent the spread of cracks and effectively improve the oxidation resistance of the coating.  相似文献

In order to increase the oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites at long‐term high temperature, C/C‐Ultra High Temperature Ceramics composites (UHTCs) with a dual‐layer UHTCs oxidation coating was successfully designed and fabricated. The microstructure and ablation resistance were investigated and discussed. After ablation in arc‐heated wind tunnel with temperature being 2200°C for 1000s, the mass ablation rate and linear ablation rate were ?1.9 × 10?2 mg/cm2s and 2.9 × 10?5 mm/s, respectively. The formation of thermodynamically compatible oxide scale including ZrO2 skeleton and SiO2 or Zr–Si–O glass on the surface were mainly contributed to the excellent ablation resistance of the composite.  相似文献

The effect of AlN substitution on oxidation of ZrB2–SiC was evaluated at 1600°C up to 5 h. Replacement of ZrB2 by AlN, with 30 vol% SiC resulted in improved oxidation resistance with a thinner scale and reduced oxygen affected area. On the other hand, substitution of AlN for SiC resulted in a deterioration of the oxidation resistance with an abnormal scale and significant recession. The effect of SiC content was also studied, and was found to be consistent with the literature for the composites without AlN additions. A similar effect was observed when AlN was added, with the higher SiC content materials showing improved oxidation resistance. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the presence of Al2O3 and SiO2 on the surface, which could possibly lead to a modification in the viscosity of the glassy oxide scale. Possibly, the oxidation behavior of ZrB2–SiC composites can be improved with controlled AlN additions by adjusting the Al:Si ratios.  相似文献

To protect carbon/carbon (C/C) composites against oxidation, a SiC-ZrB2-ZrC coating was prepared by the in-situ reaction between ZrC, B4C and Si. The thermogravimetric and isothermal oxidation results indicated the as-synthesized coating to show superior oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, so it could effectively protect C/C composites for more than 221 h at 1673 K in air. The crystalline structure and morphology evolution of the multiphase SiC-ZrB2-ZrC coating were investigated. With the increase of oxidation time, the SiO2 oxide layer transformed from amorphous to crystalline. Flower-like and flake-like SiO2 structures were generated on the glass film during the oxidation process of SiC-ZrB2-ZrC coating, which might be ascribed to the varying concentration of SiO. The oxide scale presented a two-layered structure ~130 µm thick after oxidation, consisting of a SiO2-rich glass layer containing ZrO2/ZrSiO4 particles and a Si-O-Zr layer. The multiphase SiC-ZrB2-ZrC ceramic coating exhibited much better oxidation resistance than monophase SiC, ZrB2 or ZrC ceramic due to the synergistic effect among the different components.  相似文献

The oxidation behaviors of ZrB2‐ 30 vol% SiC composites were investigated at 1500°C in air and under reducing conditions with oxygen partial pressures of 104 and 10 ? 8 Pa, respectively. The oxidation of ZrB2 and SiC were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Due to kinetic difference of oxidation behavior, the three layers (surface silica‐rich layer, oxide layer, and unreacted layer) were observed over a wide area of specimen in air, while the two layers (oxide layer, and unreacted layer) were observed over a narrow area in specimen under reducing condition. In oxide layer, the ZrB2 was oxidized to ZrO2 accompanied by division into small grains and the shape was also changed from faceted to round. This layer also consisted of amorphous SiO2 with residual SiC and found dispersed in TEM. Based on TEM analysis of ZrB2 – SiC composites tested under air and low oxygen partial pressure, the ZrB2 begins to oxidize preferentially and the SiC remained without any changes at the interface between oxidized layer and unreacted layer.  相似文献

In order to improve the oxidation protective ability of SiC-coated carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, a SiC–Si–ZrB2 multiphase ceramic coating was prepared on the surface of SiC-coated C/C composite by the process of pack cementation. The microstructures of the coating were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The coating was found to be composed of SiC, Si and ZrB2. The oxidation resistance of the coated specimens was investigated at 1773 K. The results show that the SiC–Si–ZrB2 can protect C/C against oxidation at 1773 K for more than 386 h. The excellent oxidation protective performance is attributed to the integrity and stability of SiO2 glass improved by the formation of ZrSiO4 phase during oxidation. The coated specimens were given thermal shocks between 1773 K and room temperature for 20 times. After thermal shocks, the residual flexural strength of the coated C/C composites was decreased by 16.3%.  相似文献

The oxidation behavior of ZrB2–SiC‐graphite composites under low oxygen partial pressures of 500 and 1500 Pa at 1800°C was investigated. The phase composition and microstructure of the oxidized scale were characterized using TEM, SEM, XRD, XPS, EDS. The analytical results indicated that a low oxygen partial pressure had a remarkable effect on the oxidation mechanism of ZrB2–SiC‐graphite composites. When oxidized at 1500 Pa, the oxidation kinetics was controlled by the rate of oxygen diffusion into the composite. When the composite was oxidized at 500 Pa, control of the oxidation kinetics changed from the rate of oxygen diffusion to the rate of the oxidation reaction. The rate of oxidation decreased with decreasing oxygen partial pressure. Higher partial pressures of oxygen resulted in less oxidation resistance by the ZrB2–SiC‐graphite composites.  相似文献

A double-layer coating composed of MoSi2–SiO2–SiC/ZrB2–MoSi2–SiC was designed and successfully constructed by a novel combination of precursor pyrolysis assisted sintering and rapid sintering to improve the ablation resistance of SiOC ceramic modified carbon fiber needled felt preform composites (CSs). The ZrB2–MoSi2–SiC inner layer coating was in relatively uniform distribution in the zone of 0–3 mm from the surface of CSs through the slurry/precursor infiltration in vacuum and SiOC precursor pyrolysis assisted sintering, which played a predominant role in improving oxidation and ablation resistance and maintaining the morphology of CSs. The MoSi2–SiO2–SiC outer layer coating was prepared by the spray and rapid sintering to further protect CSs from high-temperature oxidation. The ablation resistance of CSs coated with double-layer coating was evaluated by an oxygen-acetylene ablation test under the temperature of 1600–1800 °C with different ablation time of 1000 and 1500 s. The results revealed that the mass recession rates increased with the rise of ablation temperature and extension of ablation time, ranging from 0.47 g/(m2·s) to 0.98 g/(m2·s) at 1600–1800 °C for 1000 s and from 0.72 g/(m2·s) to 0.86 g/(m2·s) for 1000–1500 s at 1700 °C, while the linear recession rates showed negative values at 1700 °C due to the formation of oxides, such as SiO2 and ZrO2. The ablation mechanism of the double-layer coating was analyzed and found that a SiO2–ZrO2–Mo4.8Si3C0.6 oxidation protection barrier would be formed during the ablation process to prevent the oxygen diffusion into the interior CSs, and this study provided a novel and effective way to fabricate high-temperature oxidation protective and ablation resistant coating.  相似文献

Carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites are important candidates for laser protection materials. In this study, ablation mechanism of C/SiC coated with ZrO2/Mo and ZrB2–SiC/ZrO2/Mo under laser irradiation was studied. ZrB2–SiC multiphase ceramic and ZrO2 ceramic were successfully coated on C/SiC composite by atmospheric plasma spraying technology with Mo as transition layer. Phase evolution and morphology of composite were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, ablation behavior of the composite was investigated by laser confocal microscopy. Results showed that ablation mechanism of C/SiC composite was controlled by phase transformation, thermal reaction, and thermal diffusion, with solid–liquid transition of ZrB2 and ZrO2 being dominant factor. Endothermic reaction and good thermal diffusivity of coatings were also important factors affecting ablation performance. Reflectivity effect of ZrO2 coating was limited under high-energy laser irradiation. Compared with ZrO2/Mo single-phase-monolayer coating, designed ZrB2–SiC/ZrO2/Mo coating showed better ablation performance, and breakdown time of C/SiC increased from 10 to 40 s. The depletion of liquid phase in molten pool was identified as an important factor responsible for rapid failure of C/SiC. The coating failed when the entire liquid phase was consumed within molten pool, followed by rapid damage of C/SiC substrate. Results of this study can provide theoretical guidance and research ideas for design and application of laser protective materials.  相似文献

In order to improve the oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon composites at intermediate temperatures, a novel double-layer SiC/indialite coating was prepared by a simple and low-cost method. The internal SiC transition layer was prepared by pack cementation and the external indialite glass–ceramic coating was produced by in situ crystallization of ternary MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 glass. The microstructures and morphologies of coating were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Oxidation resistance of the as-coated C/C composites was evaluated in ambient air at temperature from 800 °C to 1200 °C. Nearly neglectable mass loss was measured after 100 h isothermal oxidation test, indicating that SiC/indialite coating possesses excellent oxidation protection ability. The as-coated samples have a good thermal shock resistance and no obvious damage was found in the coating even after suffered more than 11 thermal cycles between test temperature and room temperature. The oxidation protection mechanism of this coating was also discussed.  相似文献

Using micrometer‐ and nano‐sized SiC particles as reinforcement phase, two ZrB2‐SiC composites with high strength up to 1600°C were prepared using high‐energy ball milling, followed by hot pressing. The composite microstructure comprised finer equiaxed ZrB2 and SiC grains and intergranular amorphous phase. The temperature dependency of flexure strength related to the initial particle size of SiC. In the case of micrometer‐sized SiC, the high‐temperature strength was improved up to 1500°C compared to room‐temperature strength, but the strength degraded at 1600°C, with strength values of 600‐770 MPa. In the case of nano‐sized SiC, the enhanced high‐temperature strength was observed up to 1600°C, with strength values of 680‐840 MPa.  相似文献

Layer‐structured interphase, existing between carbon fiber and ultrahigh‐temperature ceramics (UHTCs) matrix, is an indispensable component for carbon fiber reinforced UHTCs matrix composites (Cf/UHTCs). For Cf/UHTCs fabricated by reactive melt infiltration (RMI), the interphase inevitably suffers degradation due to the interaction with the reactive melt. Here, Cf/SiC–ZrC–ZrB2 composite was fabricated by reactive infiltration of ZrSi2 melt into sol‐gel prepared Cf/B4C–C preform. (PyC–SiC)2 interphase was deposited on the fiber to investigate the degradation mechanism under ZrSi2 melt. It was revealed that the degraded interphase exhibited typical features of Zr aggregation and SiC residuals. Moreover, the Zr species diffused across the interphase and formed nanosized ZrC phase inside the fiber. A hybrid mechanisms of chemical reaction and physical melting were proposed to reveal the degradation mechanism according to characterization results and heat conduction calculations. Based on the degradation mechanism, a potential solution to mitigate interphase degradation is also put forward.  相似文献

In order to improve the ablation and oxidation resistance of C/C–ZrC–SiC composites in wide temperature domain, “Z-pins like” Zr–Si–B–C multiphase ceramic rods are prepared in the matrix. The influence of different sintering temperatures on the microstructure of ceramic rods and the ablative behavior of heterogeneous composites are studied. The results showed that the ZrB2 and SiC phases are formed in the sintered matrix, and the increase of sintering temperature is beneficial to improve the density of the ceramic rods. The ablation properties of samples have been greatly improved. The mass and linear ablation rate are 0.8 mg/s and 3.85 μm/s, respectively, at an ablation temperature of 3000 °C and an ablation time of 60 s. After ablation, the matrix surface is covered with SiO2 and ZrO2 mixed oxide films. This is due to the preferential oxidation of “Z-pins like” Zr–Si–B–C multiphase ceramic rods in the ablation process, and B2O3 melt, SiO2 melt, borosilicate glass, ZrSiO4 melt and ZrO2 oxide film can be generated successively from the low-temperature segment to the ultra-high temperature segment. These oxidation products can be used as compensation oxide melts for the healing of cracks and holes on the matrix surface in different temperature ranges and effectively prevent the external heat from spreading into the matrix. Therefore, C/C–ZrC–SiC composites with “Z-pins like” Zr–Si–B–C multiphase ceramic rods achieve ablation resistance in wide temperature domain.  相似文献

Three-dimensional carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites were fabricated by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) with polycarbosilane as the matrix precursor, SiC coating prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and ZrB2-SiC/SiC coating prepared by CVD with slurry painting were applied on C/SiC composites, respectively. The oxidation of three samples at 1500 °C was compared and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that the C/SiC without coating is distorted quickly. The mass loss of SiC coating coated sample is 4.6% after 2 h oxidation and the sample with ZrB2-SiC/SiC multilayer coating only has 0.4% mass loss even after oxidation. ZrB2-SiC/SiC multilayer coating can provide longtime protection for C/SiC composites. The mode of the fracture behavior of C/SiC composites was also changed. When with coating, the fracture mode of C/SiC composites became brittle. When after oxidation, the fracture mode of C/SiC composites without and with coating also became brittle.  相似文献

To improve the oxidation protective ability of carbon/carbon composites, ZrB2–SiC gradient coating was prepared on the surface of C/C composites by an in-situ reaction method. The ZrB2–SiC gradient coating consisted of an inner ZrB2–SiC layer and an outer ZrB2–SiC–Si coating. The phase composition and microstructures of the multiphase coating were characterized by XRD, EDS and SEM. Results showed that the inner coating is mainly composed of ZrB2 and SiC, while the outer multiphase coating is composed of ZrB2, SiC and Si. The multilayer coating is about 200 μm in thickness, which has no penetration crack or big hole. The oxidation behavior of the coated C/C composites at 1773 K in air was investigated. Results show that the gradient ZrB2–SiC oxidation protective coating could protect C/C from oxidation for 207 h with only (4.56±1.2)×10−3 g/cm2 weight loss, owing to the compound silicate glass layer with the existence of thermally stable phase ZrSiO4.  相似文献

SiC coating with a thickness of 50–70 µm was prepared on the surface of C/C composites by in-situ reaction method. The SiC coated C/C composites were then tested in a wind tunnel where a temperature gradient from 200 to 1600 °C could be obtained to investigate their erosion behavior. The results of wind tunnel test indicated that the service life of C/C composites was prolonged from 0.5 to 44 h after applying the SiC coating. After the wind tunnel test, three typical oxidation morphologies, including glassy SiO2 layer, porous SiO2 layer and clusters of honeycomb-like SiO2 grains, were found on the SiC coated C/C composites. With the decrease of oxidation temperature, the amount of glassy SiO2 declined and the thermal stress increased, which induced the cracking followed by the degradation of the SiC coating.  相似文献

Because of unique combination of properties, ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are considered the most suitable material for applications in extreme environments as in hypersonic flights, atmospheric reentry, and rocket propulsion system. Processing of UHTCs especially ZrB2-based ceramic composites with additives offer advantages in terms of simple processing methodology and excellent properties. Processing route highly controls the ceramic properties. Present review share out systematically and explain the processing strategies of ZrB2-based ceramic composites––conventional, hot press or spark plasma sintering and their effect on microstructure features, physical, and mechanical properties and tribological performance. Present review suggests that it is possible to process full dense ZrB2–SiC ceramic composite with ultrafine or nano size particles via fast sintering technique like spark plasma sintering and gives better mechanical and wear resistant properties.  相似文献

A volatility diagram of zirconium carbide (ZrC) at 1600, 1930, and 2200°C was calculated in this work. Combining it with the existing volatility diagrams of ZrB2 and SiC, the volatility diagram of a ternary ZrB2‐SiC‐ZrC (ZSZ) system was constructed in order to interpret the oxidation behavior of ZSZ ceramics. Applying this diagram, the formation of ZrC‐corroded and SiC‐depleted layers and the oxidation sequence of each component in ZSZ during oxidation and ablation could be well understood. Most of the predictions from the diagrams are consistent with the experimental observations on the oxidation scale of dense ZrB2‐SiC‐ZrC ceramics/coatings after oxidation at 1600°C or ablation at 1930 and 2200°C. The reasons for the discrepancy are also briefly discussed.  相似文献

3.5 μm thin layers of dense, crack-free, proton conducting, SiO2-rich glass have been developed on ZrB2–SiC ceramic composites, by thermal oxidation at 1400 °C for 30 min in air. A conductivity of 2 mS cm−1 at 25 °C was found, as measured by AC impedance and steady-state voltammetry, and was estimated at ca. 2 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 80 °C. A striking behaviour of the oxidized ZrB2–SiC composites is also pointed out: underneath the glass layer, there is a porous layer rich in electronic conductive ZrB2, without well-defined interface between them, i.e., exhibiting a composition gradient in oxygen. In other words, protonic half-fuel cells could be fabricated under such conditions, for future use in hydrogen or direct alcohol fuel cells.  相似文献
