In this paper, the exergy flow and exergy efficiency of a 3 kW proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell were investigated, and the regional characteristic of the distributed energy system was considered. In the environmental temperature range of 263–313 K, the difference in the total efficiency of the proposed system was 6%. On the other hand, the difference in the exergy total efficiency of the same temperature range was 30%. Moreover, as a result of examining how to improve the exergy efficiency of this system, certain improvement methods were proposed: (a) preheat the city-gas and air supplied to the system using exhaust heat and raise the combustion temperature; (b) preheat the water supplied to the system using exhaust heat; (c) change the catalyst material of each unit and reduce the amount of cooling of the reformed gas; and (d) examine the combined cycle power generation. The exergy efficiency, in the case of introducing the proposed system into individual homes in Sapporo, Tokyo, and Kagoshima, was evaluated. Consequently, when the system was introduced into a community with low outside air temperatures, exergy efficiency increased compared with communities with high outside air temperatures.  相似文献

The effects of inefficiencies in the compression, expansion and regeneration processes on engine performance have been evaluated theoretically for a Stirling heat engine operating in a closed regenerative thermodynamic cycle. The irreversible cycle has been optimized by using the maximum power density technique. Maximized power and maximized power density are obtained for different nex, τ, αc, αh, ηc, ηex and ηreg values. The maximum efficiencies have been found very close to the values corresponding to the maximum power density conditions but far from the values at maximum power. It has been found that the engines designed by considering the maximum power density have high efficiencies and small sizes under the same prescribed conditions. A hybrid plant producing combined heat and power (CHP) from biomass by use of a two-stage gasification concept, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and a micro gas turbine was considered for optimization. The hybrid plant represents a sustainable and efficient alternative to conventional decentralized CHP plants. A clean product gas was produced by the demonstrated two-stage gasifier, thus only simple gas conditioning was necessary prior to the SOFC stack. The plant was investigated by thermodynamic modeling combining zero-dimensional component models into complete system-level models. Energy and exergy analyses were applied. Focus in this optimization study was heat management, and the optimization efforts resulted in a substantial gain of approximately 6% in the electrical efficiency of the plant. The optimized hybrid plant produced approximately 290 kWe at an electrical efficiency of 58.2% based on lower heating value (LHV).  相似文献

Biomass can be applied as the primary source for the production of hydrogen in the future. The biomass is converted in an atmospheric fluidized bed gasification process using steam as the gasifying agent. The producer gas needs further cleaning and processing before the hydrogen can be converted in a fuel cell; it is assumed that the gas cleaning processes are able to meet the requirements for a PEM-FC. The compressed hydrogen is supplied to a hydrogen grid and can be used in small-scale decentralized CHP units. In this study it is assumed that the CHP units are based on low temperature PEM fuel cells. For the evaluation of alternative technologies the whole chain of centralized hydrogen production from biomass up to and including decentralized electricity production in PEM fuel cells is considered. Two models for the production of hydrogen from biomass and three models for the combined production of electricity and heat with PEM fuel cells are built using the computer program Cycle-Tempo. Two different levels of hydrogen purity are considered in this evaluation: 60% and 99.99% pure hydrogen. The purity of the hydrogen affects both the efficiencies of the hydrogen production as well as the PEM-FC systems. The electrical exergy efficiency of the PEM-FC system without additional heat production is calculated to be 27.66% in the case of 60% hydrogen and 29.06% in the case of 99.99% pure hydrogen. The electrical exergy efficiencies of the whole conversion chain appear to be 21.68% and 18.74%, respectively. The high losses during purification of the hydrogen gas result in a higher efficiency for the case with low purity hydrogen. The removal of the last impurities strongly increases the overall exergy losses of the conversion chain.  相似文献

A simulation program, based on Visual Pascal, for sizing and techno-economic analysis of the performance of solar-hydrogen combined heat and power systems for remote applications is described. The accuracy of the submodels is checked by comparing the real performances of the system’s components obtained from experimental measurements with model outputs. The use of the heat generated by the PEM fuel cell, and any unused excess hydrogen, is investigated for hot water production or space heating while the solar-hydrogen system is supplying electricity. A 5 kWh daily demand profile and the solar radiation profile of Melbourne have been used in a case study to investigate the typical techno-economic characteristics of the system to supply a remote household. The simulation shows that by harnessing both thermal load and excess hydrogen it is possible to increase the average yearly energy efficiency of the fuel cell in the solar-hydrogen system from just below 40% up to about 80% in both heat and power generation (based on the high heating value of hydrogen). The fuel cell in the system is conventionally sized to meet the peak of the demand profile. However, an economic optimisation analysis illustrates that installing a larger fuel cell could lead to up to a 15% reduction in the unit cost of the electricity to an average of just below 90 c/kWh over the assessment period of 30 years. Further, for an economically optimal size of the fuel cell, nearly a half the yearly energy demand for hot water of the remote household could be supplied by heat recovery from the fuel cell and utilising unused hydrogen in the exit stream. Such a system could then complement a conventional solar water heating system by providing the boosting energy (usually in the order of 40% of the total) normally obtained from gas or electricity.  相似文献

A detailed exergy analysis was performed for the steam reforming process of glycerol by means of a series of experiments in a bench scale apparatus. The reforming was conducted in a fixed bed reactor, which operated in heat recovery mode by extracting the demanded energy from hot exhaust gases provided by a diesel engine. In order to determine the role of the main operational parameters into the exergy efficiency of the studied process, the experiments were carried out with glycerol feed concentrations in water ranging from 10% up to 90% weight, whereas the outlet reactor temperature was varied from 600 °C up to 800 °C. Detailed exergy balances revealed a compromise between the exergy destruction within the reforming reactor and liquid separator versus the exergy losses associated to the tar and char outputs. This trade-off was favourable to the 50% and 70% glycerol feed concentration regimes and plateaus of about 74% exergy efficiency and 24 MJ/kg dry syngas exergy content were verified from 650 to 800 °C reactor temperatures.  相似文献

The present paper considers an integrated solar combined cycle system (ISCCS) with an utilization of solar energy for steam methane reforming. The overall efficiency was compared with the efficiency of an integrated solar combined cycle system with the utilization of solar energy for steam generation for a steam turbine cycle. Utilization of solar energy for steam methane reforming gives the increase in an overall efficiency up to 3.5%. If water that used for steam methane reforming will be condensed from the exhaust gases, the overall efficiency of ISCCS with steam methane reforming will increase up to 6.2% and 8.9% for β = 1.0 and β = 2.0, respectively, in comparison with ISCCS where solar energy is utilized for generation of steam in steam turbine cycle. The Sankey diagrams were compiled based on the energy balance. Utilization of solar energy for steam methane reforming increases the share of power of a gas turbine cycle: two-thirds are in a gas turbine cycle, and one-third is in a steam turbine cycle. In parallel, if solar energy is used for steam generation for a steam turbine cycle, than the shares of power from a gas and steam turbine are almost equal.  相似文献

Power production from biomass can occur through external combustion (e.g. steam cycles, organic Rankine cycles, Stirling engines), or internal combustion after gasification or pyrolysis (e.g. gas engines, IGCC). External combustion has the disadvantage of delivering limited conversion efficiencies (max 30–35%). Internal combustion has the potential of high efficiencies, but it always needs a severe and mostly problematic gas cleaning.  相似文献

The potential for both heat and power extraction from a PEM fuel cell is investigated experimentally and using computer simulation to improve the economics of a solar-hydrogen system supplying energy to a remote household. The overall average energy efficiency of the fuel cell was measured to be about 70% by utilizing the heat generated for domestic water heating, compared to only 35-50% for electricity generation alone. The corresponding round-trip energy efficiency of the hydrogen storage sub-system (electrolyzer, storage tank, and fuel cell) was raised from about 34% in a power-only application to about 50% in combined heat and power (CHP) mode. The economic benefit of using the fuel cell heat for boosting an LPG hot water system over a 30-year assessment period is estimated to be equivalent to about 15% of the total capital cost of the solar-hydrogen system. The stoichiometry of the input air, and the fuel cell operating temperature, were found to influence significantly the overall performance of the solar-hydrogen CHP system.  相似文献

A methane catalytic decomposition reactor-direct carbon fuel cell-internal reforming solid oxide fuel cell (MCDR-DCFC-IRSOFC) energy system is highly efficient for converting the chemical energy of methane into electrical energy. A gas turbine cycle is also used to output more power from the thermal energy generated in the IRSOFC. In part I of this work, models of the fuel cells and the system are proposed and validated. In this part, exergy conservation analysis is carried out based on the developed electrochemical and thermodynamic models. The ratio of the exergy destruction of each unit is examined. The results show that the electrical exergy efficiency of 68.24% is achieved with the system. The possibility of further recovery of the waste heat is discussed and the combined power-heat exergy efficiency is over 80%.  相似文献

A new integrated combined cooling, heating and power system which includes a solid oxide fuel cell, Stirling engine, steam turbine, linear Fresnel solar field and double effect absorption chiller is introduced and investigated from energy, exergy and thermodynamic viewpoints. In this process, produced electrical power by the fuel cell and steam turbines is 6971.8 kW. Stirling engine uses fuel cell waste heat and produces 656 kW power. In addition, absorption chiller is driven by waste heat of the Stirling engine and generates 2118.8 kW of cooling load. Linear Fresnel solar field produces 961.7 kW of thermal power as a heat exchanger. The results indicate that, electrical, energy and exergy efficiencies and total exergy destruction of the proposed system are 49.7%, 67.5%, 55.6% and 12560 kW, respectively. Finally, sensitivity analysis to investigate effect of the different parameters such as flow rate of inputs, outlet pressure of the components and temperature changes of the solar system on the hybrid system performance is also done.  相似文献

The hybrid system comprised by a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell and internal combustion engine shows many advantages for vehicle applications. The hybrid system can recover the un‐reacted hydrogen from fuel cell, utilize heat in the combustion product from cylinder, or combine the advantages of both. Based on thermodynamics and electrochemistry, an indirect integration system of the PEM fuel cell and Otto cycle is established for vehicle applications. The irreversibilities such as the entropy production and overpotentials in the fuel cell, the finite‐rate heat transfer between the air in the Otto cycle and combustion chamber wall, the irreversible compression, expansion, and regeneration processes in the Otto cycle are considered. The excellence of the PEM fuel cell compared with internal combustion engine is shown in terms of energy conversion efficiency. When the vehicle is speeding or launching suddenly, not only the flow rate of natural gas into the hybrid system should be increased but also a specific coupling mode between two powertrain systems should be found. Biomass gasification is a process of converting biomass to a combustible gas suitable for use in boilers, engines and turbines to produce combined cooling, heat and power. This paper presents a detailed model of a biomass gasification system and designs a multigeneration energy system which uses the biomass gasification process for generating combined cooling, heat and electricity. Energy and exergy analyses are first applied to evaluate the performance of the designed system. Next, minimizing total cost rate and maximizing exergy efficiency of the system are considered as two objective functions and a multiobjective optimization approach based on differential evolution algorithm and local unimodal sampling technique is developed to calculate the optimal values of the multigeneration system parameters. A parametric study is then carried out and Pareto front curve is used to determine the trend of objective functions and assess the performance of the system. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is employed to evaluate effects of design parameters on the objective functions. Simulation results are compared with two other multiobjective optimization algorithms and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified using various performance indicators.  相似文献

A thermodynamic evaluation of different energy conversion chains based on centralized biomass gasification and decentralized heat and power production by a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been performed. Three different chains have been evaluated, the main difference between the chains is the secondary fuel produced via biomass gasification. The secondary fuels considered are hydrogen, synthetic natural gas (SNG) and syngas. These fuels are assumed to be distributed through a transport and distribution grid to the micro-combined heat and power (μ-CHP) systems based on a SOFC and a heat pump.  相似文献

As a high-efficiency and eco-friendly way of energy conversion, fuel cell has received much attention in recent years. A novel residential combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system, consisting of a biomass gasifier, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack, an absorption chiller and auxiliary equipment, is proposed. Based on the established thermodynamic models, the effects of operating parameters, biomass materials type and moisture content on the system performance are closely investigated. Overall system performance is then compared under four different operating modes. From the viewpoints of energy utilization and CO2 emissions, the CCHP mode has the best performance with corresponding energy efficiency of 57.41% and CO2 emission index of 0.516 ton/MWh. Exergy analysis results suggest that the optimization and transformation on the gasifier and PEMFC stack should be encouraged. Energy and exergy assessments in this research provide pragmatic guidance to the performance improvement of the integrated CCHP systems with PEMFC. This research also achieves a reasonable combination of efficient cogeneration, green hydrogen production and full recovery of low grade waste heat.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel combined cycle with synthetic utilization of coal and natural gas is proposed, in which the burning of coal provides thermal energy to the methane/steam reforming reaction. The syngas fuel, generated by the reforming reaction, is directly provided to the gas turbine as fuel. The reforming process with coal firing has been investigated based on the concept of energy level, and the equations has been derived to disclosing the mechanism of the cascade utilization of chemical energy of natural gas and coal in the reforming process with coal firing. Through the synthetic utilization of natural gas and coal, the exergy destruction of the combustion of syngas is decreased obviously compared with the direct combustion of natural gas and coal. As a result, the overall thermal efficiency of the new cycle reaches 52.9%, as energy supply by methane is about twice as much as these of coal. With the same consumption of natural gas and coal the new cycle can generate about 6% more power than the reference cycles (the combined cycle and the steam power plant). The promising results obtained here provide a new way to utilize natural gas and coal more efficiently and economically by synthetic utilization.  相似文献

PEM fuel cell is an electrochemical system that converts the chemical energy of hydrogen directly into electricity and is widely used as an energy source for ground vehicle applications. This paper aims to analyze the technical aspects of integrated biomass gasification and PEM fuel cell systems for electricity production which is focused on gasifier operating conditions and their effect on the cell voltage. To evaluate the effect of gasifier operating conditions (gasification temperature, steam/biomass ratio, equivalence ratio, and biomass particle size) on cell voltage, an experimental work has also been carried. The results show that for all catalysts, the cell voltage increased rapidly as the reaction temperature increased from 500 °C to 650 °C, then tended to a slow growth due to the increase of reaction rates, enabling the fast decomposition of biomass into clean syngas (H2 and CO), especially at the initial stage of reaction.  相似文献

Use of agricultural biomass (switchgrass, prairie grasses) through Fischer-Tropsch (FT) conversion to liquid fuels is compared with biomass utilization via (IGCC) integrated gasification combined cycle electrical production. In the IGCC scenario, biomass is co-fired with coal, with biomass comprising 10% of the fuel input by energy content. In this case, the displaced coal is processed via FT methods so that liquid fuels are produced in both scenarios. Overall performance of the two options is compared on the basis of total energy yield (electricity, liquid fuels), carbon dioxide emissions, and total cost. Total energy yield is almost identical whether biomass is used for electrical power generation or liquid fuels synthesis. Carbon dioxide emissions are also approximately equal for the two pathways. Capital costs are more difficult to compare since scaling factors cause considerable uncertainty. With IGCC costs roughly equivalent for either scenario, cost differences between the pathways appear based on FT plant construction cost. Coal FT facility capital cost estimates for the plant scale in this study (721 MWt LHV input) are estimated to be 410 (MUSD) million US Dollars while the similar scale biomass-only FT plant costs range from 430 MUSD to 590 MUSD.  相似文献

In recent years, renewable energy sources have played an increasingly important role in potential energy production. The integration of renewables into energy production plants has therefore become a major challenge for many organizations. This study concerns the modernization of a small power plant in a large hospital. The design criteria include the possibility of utilizing renewable energy sources and providing a potential increase in heat production (with additional heat being supplied to a nearby university campus). The existing boiler conditions (i.e. controls, efficiency, etc.) are unable to satisfy the desired requirements and therefore require an extensive retrofit.  相似文献

A detailed system study on an integrated gasifier-SOFC test system which is being constructed for combined heat and power (CHP) application is presented. The performance of the system is evaluated using thermodynamic calculations. The system includes a fixed bed gasifier and a 5 kW SOFC CHP system. Two kinds of gas cleaning systems, a combined high and low temperature gas cleaning system and a high temperature gas cleaning system, are considered to connect the gasifier and the SOFC system. A complete model of the gasifier-SOFC system with these two gas cleaning systems is built and evaluated in terms of energy and exergy efficiencies. A sensitivity study is carried out to check system responses to different working parameters. The results of this work show that the electrical efficiencies of the gasifier-SOFC CHP systems with different gas cleaning systems are almost the same whereas the gasifier-SOFC CHP systems with the high temperature gas cleaning system offers higher heat efficiency for both energy and exergy.  相似文献
