Novel membrane bioreactor (MBR) coupled with a nonwoven fabric filter for household wastewater treatment 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Conventional and modified membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are increasingly used in small-scale wastewater treatment. However, their widespread applications are hindered by their relatively high cost and operational complexity. In this study, we investigate a new concept of wastewater treatment using a nonwoven fabric filter bag (NFFB) as the membrane bioreactor. Activated sludge is charged in the nonwoven fabric filter bag and membrane filtration via the fabric is achieved under gravity flow without a suction pump. This study found that the biofilm layer formed inside the NFFB achieved 10 mg/L of suspended solids in the permeate within 20 min of initial operation. The dynamic biofilter layer showed good filterability and the specific membrane resistance consisted of 0.3-1.9 × 1012 m/kg. Due to the low F/M ratio (0.04-0.10 kg BOD5/m3/d) and the resultant low sludge yield, the reactor was operated without forming excess sludge. Although the reactor provided aerobic conditions, denitrification occurred in the biofilm layer to recover the alkalinity, thereby eliminating the need to supplement the alkalinity. This study indicates that the NFFB system provides a high potential of effective wastewater treatment with simple operation at reduced cost, and hence offer an attractive solution for widespread use in rural and sparsely populated areas. 相似文献

The long-term performance of a bioaugmented membrane bioreactor (MBR) containing a GAC-packed anaerobic zone for treatment of textile wastewater containing structurally different azo dyes was observed. A unique feeding strategy, consistent with the mode of evolution of separate waste streams in textile plants, was adopted to make the best use of the GAC-zone for dye removal. Dye was introduced through the GAC-zone while the rest of the colorless media was simultaneously fed through the aerobic zone. Preliminary experiments confirmed the importance of coupling the GAC-amended anaerobic zone to the aerobic MBR and also evidenced the efficacy of the adopted feeding strategy. Following this, the robustness of the process under gradually increasing dye-loading was tested. The respective average dye concentrations (mg/L) in the sample from GAC-zone and the membrane-permeate under dye-loadings of 0.1 and 1 g/L.d were as follows: GAC-zone (3, 105), permeate (0, 5). TOC concentration in membrane-permeate for the aforementioned loadings were 3 and 54 mg/L, respectively. Stable decoloration along with significant TOC removal during a period of over 7 months under extremely high dye-loadings demonstrated the superiority of the proposed hybrid process. 相似文献

Feasibility study of moving-fiber biofilm membrane bioreactor for wastewater treatment: process control 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Non-biodegradable solid wastes of non-intact membrane fibres/flatsheets and modules disposed from membrane bioreactor (MBR) plants are in a great concern for environmental impact. Estimated cumulative amount of the module solid wastes from European countries in the next five years should be larger than 1000 tons in which a proper management strategy and reuse for the disposed solid waste are urgently required. This article was aimed to propose an alternative to make uses of the non-intact membrane fibres for the aerobic biofilm supports and to study the feasibility on process operation of novel moving-fiber biofilm MBR. A system of moving-fiber biofilm membrane bioreactor was designed and evaluated experimentally, including an upflow anaerobic sludge reactor, an aerobic moving-fiber biofilm reactor, and a submerged membrane filtration unit. Start-up method and operating conditions to control the biofilms growing on the moving fibers were investigated. Organic removal rates, optimum operating conditions for the system, and membrane fouling rates at various membrane aeration rates and permeate fluxes were monitored to evaluate the performance of the proposed BF-MBR process. 相似文献

Membrane fouling and scouring aeration effectiveness were studied using three large pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactors (MBRs) operated at a series of permeate fluxes, scouring aeration intensities and cyclic aeration frequencies to treat municipal wastewater. The results showed that when operated at the sustainable conditions, the MBRs had a stable reversible fouling resistance. At unsustainable conditions, the reversible fouling resistance increased exponentially as filtration progressed. For each of above two cases, the fouling ratios newly defined by Eqs. (7) and (8) were calculated from the transmembrane pressure increases to compare the relative reversible fouling rates. With the range of sustainable filtration conditions, the fouling ratios at the same reference scouring aeration intensity were found to be proportional to permeate flux. Similarly, the fouling ratios calculated with the same reference permeate flux decreased exponentially with increasing scouring aeration intensity. Moreover, the effects of scouring aeration intensity and permeate flux on the fouling ratios were found to be independent of one another. As a result, an empirical relationship was derived to relate the stable reversible fouling resistance to sustainable permeate fluxes and scouring aeration intensities. Its application was demonstrated by constructing transmembrane pressure contours overlaid with scouring aeration effectiveness contours to aid in the selection of optimal MBR filtration conditions. 相似文献

The optimum operational condition of membrane bioreactor (MBR): cost estimation of aeration and sludge treatment 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
A methodology to obtain the most economical operational condition of membrane bioreactor (MBR) is developed. In order to achieve the optimum design parameters of MBR with which operational costs are minimized, aeration and sludge treatment costs were estimated for various operational conditions. Generally sludge treatment cost and aeration cost were inversely proportional to each other, which means sludge treatment cost is minimized when aeration cost is maximized and vice versa. Therefore, there might exist an optimum point between the two extreme cases. However, sludge treatment cost turned out to overwhelm the aeration cost over the reasonable operational conditions. Therefore, sludge minimization was considered to be a key for the economical operation of MBR. In the case of typical municipal wastewater of which COD was 400mgL(-1), steady-state MLSS was expected to increase from 11,000 to 15,000mg/L without sludge removal when HRT was decreasing from 16 to 12h. For the range of operational conditions considered in this study, economically optimum HRT and target MLSS were turned out to be 16h and 11,000mg/L, respectively. Under this condition, aeration for the biodegradation of organic matters would be 13.3m(3) air/min when influent was 1000m(3)/day. 相似文献

Baffled membrane bioreactor (BMBR) for efficient nutrient removal from municipal wastewater 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Submerged membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are now widely used for various types of wastewater treatment. One drawback of submerged MBRs is the difficulty in removing nitrogen because intensive aeration is usually carried out in the tank and the MBRs must therefore be operated under aerobic conditions. In this study, the feasibility of treating municipal wastewater by a baffled membrane bioreactor (BMBR), particularly in terms of nitrogen removal, was examined. Simultaneous nitrification/denitrification in a single and small reaction tank was possible by inserting baffles into a normal submerged MBR as long as wastewater was fed in the appropriate way. To examine the applicability of the BMBR, pilot-scale experiments were carried out using real municipal wastewater. Although neither external carbon addition nor mixed liquor circulation was carried out in the operation of the BMBR, average removal rates of total organic carbon (TOC), total phosphorus (T-P) and total nitrogen (T-N) reached 85%, 97% and 77%, respectively, with the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4.7h. Permeability of the membrane could be maintained at a high level throughout the operation. It was found that denitrification was the limiting step in removal of nitrogen in the BMBR in this study. Various types of monitoring carried out in the BMBR also demonstrated the possibility of further improvements in its performance. 相似文献

In this paper we report on the performances of full-scale conventional activated sludge (CAS) treatment and two pilot-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs) in eliminating various pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) belonging to different therapeutic groups and with diverse physico-chemical properties. Both aqueous and solid phases were analysed for the presence of 31 pharmaceuticals included in the analytical method. The most ubiquitous contaminants in the sewage water were analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs ibuprofen (14.6-31.3 μg/L) and acetaminophen (7.1-11.4 μg/L), antibiotic ofloxacin (0.89-31.7 μg/L), lipid regulators gemfibrozil (2.0-5.9 μg/L) and bezafibrate (1.9-29.8 μg/L), β-blocker atenolol (0.84-2.8 μg/L), hypoglycaemic agent glibenclamide (0.12-15.9 μg/L) and a diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (2.3-4.8 μg/L). Also, several pharmaceuticals such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, ofloxacin and azithromycin were detected in sewage sludge at concentrations up to 741.1, 336.3, 380.7, 454.7 and 299.6 ng/g dry weight. Two pilot-scale MBRs exhibited enhanced elimination of several pharmaceutical residues poorly removed by the CAS treatment (e.g., mefenamic acid, indomethacin, diclofenac, propyphenazone, pravastatin, gemfibrozil), whereas in some cases more stable operation of one of the MBR reactors at prolonged SRT proved to be detrimental for the elimination of some compounds (e.g., β-blockers, ranitidine, famotidine, erythromycin). Moreover, the anti-epileptic drug carbamazepine and diuretic hydrochlorothiazide by-passed all three treatments investigated.Furthermore, sorption to sewage sludge in the MBRs as well as in the entire treatment line of a full-scale WWTP is discussed for the encountered analytes. Among the pharmaceuticals encountered in sewage sludge, sorption to sludge could be a relevant removal pathway only for several compounds (i.e., mefenamic acid, propranolol, and loratidine). Especially in the case of loratidine the experimentally determined sorption coefficients (Kds) were in the range 2214-3321 L/kg (mean). The results obtained for the solid phase indicated that MBR wastewater treatment yielding higher biodegradation rate could reduce the load of pollutants in the sludge. Also, the overall output load in the aqueous and solid phase of the investigated WWTP was calculated, indicating that none of the residual pharmaceuticals initially detected in the sewage sludge were degraded during the anaerobic digestion. Out of the 26 pharmaceutical residues passing through the WWTP, 20 were ultimately detected in the treated sludge that is further applied on farmland. 相似文献

The critical flux and chemical cleaning-in-place (CIP) in a long-term operation of a pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor for municipal wastewater treatment were investigated. Steady filtration under high flux (30 L/(m2 h)) was successfully achieved due to effective membrane fouling control by sub-critical flux operation and chemical CIP with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) in both trans-membrane pressure (TMP) controlling mode (cleaning with high concentration NaClO of 2000-3000 mg/L in terms of effective chorine was performed when TMP rose to 15 kPa) and time controlling mode (cleanings were performed weekly and monthly respectively with low concentration NaClO (500-1000 mg/L) and high concentration NaClO (3000 mg/L)). Microscopic analysis on membrane fibers before and after high concentration NaClO was also conducted. Images of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that NaClO CIP could effectively remove gel layer, the dominant fouling under sub-critical flux operation. Porosity measurements indicated that NaClO CIP could partially remove pore blockage fouling. The analyses from fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) with attenuated total reflectance accessory (ATR) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) demonstrated that protein-like macromolecular organics and inorganics were the important components of the fouling layer. The analysis of effluent quality before and after NaClO CIP showed no obvious effect on effluent quality. 相似文献

Three 6-L submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactors (SAnMBRs) with solids retention times (SRTs) of 30, 60 and infinite days were setup for treating synthetic low-strength wastewater at hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 12, 10 and 8 h. Total COD removal efficiencies higher than 97% were achieved at all operating conditions. Maximum biogas production rate was 0.056 L CH4/g MLVSS d at an infinite SRT. A shorter HRT or longer SRT increased biogas production due to increased organic loading rate or enhanced dominancy of methanogenics. A decrease in HRT enhanced growth of biomass and accumulation of soluble microbial products (SMP), which accelerated membrane fouling. A drop in carbohydrate to protein ratio also inversely affected fouling. At 12-h HRT, the effect of SRT on biomass concentration in SAnMBRs was negligible and membrane fouling was controlled by variant surface modification due to different SMP compositions, i.e., higher carbohydrate and protein concentrations in SMP at longer SRT resulted in higher membrane fouling rate. At 8 and 10-h HRTs, infinite SRT in SAnMBR caused highest MLSS and SMP concentrations, which sped up particle deposition and biocake/biofilm development. At longer SRT, lower extracellular polymeric substances reduced flocculation of particulates and particle sizes, further aggravated membrane fouling. 相似文献

Due to the inefficiency of aeration measures in preventing fouling by soluble and colloidal particles. The effect of alternating high/low cyclic aeration mode on the membrane fouling in the submerged membrane bioreactor was studied by comparing to fouling in a constant aeration mode. Results indicated a higher overall fouling rate in the cyclic aeration mode than in the constant aeration. However, a higher percentage of reversible fouling was observed for the cyclic aeration mode. The membrane permeability can be more easily recovered from physical cleaning such as backwashing in the cyclic aeration mode. The activated sludge floc size distribution analysis revealed a floc destruction and re-flocculation processes caused by the alternating high/low aeration. The short high aeration period could prevent the destruction of strong strength bonds within activated sludge flocs. Therefore, less soluble and colloidal material was observed in the supernatant due to the preservation of the strong strength bonds. The weak strength bonds damaged in the high aeration period could be recovered in the re-flocculation process in the low aeration period. The floc destruction and re-flocculation processes were suggested to be the main reason for the low irreversible fouling in the cyclic aeration mode. 相似文献

The results of experiments on municipal wastewater primary effluent are presented for a pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR). The SMBR pilot plant employed an ultrafiltration membrane with a nominal pore size of 0.035 microm and was operated at a constant membrane flux of 30 L/m(2)h. The mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration was maintained at 8+/-2 g/L and steady-state fouling rates were determined for 10, 5, 4, 3, and 2-d MCRTs, corresponding to food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratios of 0.34, 0.55, 0.73, 0.84, and 1.41 gCOD/gVSS d, respectively. Membrane fouling rates increased as the F/M was increased. Steady-state membrane fouling rates were correlated with total soluble microbial products (SMP) concentrations. The membrane fouling rates did not correlate well with soluble COD measured on a 0.45 microm membrane filtrate of mixed liquor or with soluble COD rejection (effluent COD/soluble COD). 相似文献

Fate of antibiotics in activated sludge followed by ultrafiltration (CAS-UF) and in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The fates of several macrolide, sulphonamide, and trimethoprim antibiotics contained in the raw sewage of the Tel-Aviv wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) were investigated after the sewage was treated using either a full-scale conventional activated sludge (CAS) system coupled with a subsequent ultrafiltration (UF) step or a pilot membrane bioreactor (MBR) system. Antibiotics removal in the MBR system, once it achieved stable operation, was 15-42% higher than that of the CAS system. This advantage was reduced to a maximum of 20% when a UF was added to the CAS. It was hypothesized that the contribution of membrane separation (in both systems) to antibiotics removal was due either to sorption to biomass (rather than improvement in biodegradation) or to enmeshment in the membrane biofilm (since UF membrane pores are significantly larger than the contaminant molecules). Batch experiments with MBR biomass showed a markedly high potential for sorption of the tested antibiotics onto the biomass. Moreover, methanol extraction of MBR biomass released significant amounts of sorbed antibiotics. This finding implies that more attention must be devoted to the management of excess sludge. 相似文献

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) properties and their effects on membrane fouling in a submerged membrane bioreactor 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
A pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) for real municipal wastewater treatment was operated for over one year in order to investigate extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) properties and their role in membrane fouling. The components and properties of bound EPS were examined by the evaluation of mean oxidation state (MOS) of organic carbons, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, and gel filtration chromatography (GFC), etc. Test results showed that MOS of organic carbons in the bound EPS was ranging from −0.14 to −0.51, and major components could be assessed as proteins and carbohydrates. FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of proteins and carbohydrates in the bound EPS. The organic substances with fluorescence characteristics in the bound EPS were identified as proteins, visible humic acid-like substances and fulvic acid-like substances by EEM technology. GFC analysis demonstrated that EPS had part of higher MW molecules and a broader MW distribution than the influent wastewater. It was also found that a high shear stress imposed on mixed liquor could result in the release of EPS, which would in turn influence membrane fouling in MBRs. Bound EPS solution was observed to have a stronger potential of fouling than mixed liquor. During long-term operation of the MBR, bound EPS demonstrated positive correlations with membrane fouling while temperature was verified as a negative factor affecting EPS concentration. Compared to tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) showed more significant correlations with membrane fouling. This critical investigation would contribute towards a better understanding of the behavior, composition and fouling potential of EPS in MBR operation. 相似文献

Methanogenic population dynamics and performance of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treating swine manure under high shear conditions 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A 6-L, completely mixed anaerobic bioreactor with an external ultrafiltration membrane module was operated for 300 days to evaluate the startup and performance of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treating swine manure. The reactor had a successful startup at the initial loading rate of 1g volatile solids (VS)/L/day. After a two-fold increase in loading rate followed by a sudden, two-fold increase in flow velocity through the membrane module on day 75, the performance of the AnMBR deteriorated as measured by volatile fatty acid (VFA) accumulation, decrease in pH, and decrease in biogas production. The methanogenic population dynamics in the reactor were monitored with terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP). Changes in the relative levels of Methanosarcinaceae and Methanosaetaceae were consistent with changes in VFA concentrations, i.e., high and low levels of acetate corresponded to a high abundance of Methanosarcinaceae and Methanosaetaceae, respectively. The levels of hydrogenotrophic methanogens of the order of Methanomicrobiales increased during decreased reactor performance suggesting that syntrophic interactions involving hydrogenotrophic methanogens remained intact regardless of the degree of shear in the AnMBR. 相似文献

Biodiversity and population dynamics of microorganisms in a full-scale membrane bioreactor for municipal wastewater treatment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The total, ammonia-oxidizing, and denitrifying Bacteria in a full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) were evaluated monthly for over one year. Microbial communities were analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and clone library analysis of the 16S rRNA and ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) and nitrous oxide reductase (nosZ) genes. The community fingerprints obtained were compared to those from a conventional activated sludge (CAS) process running in parallel treating the same domestic wastewater. Distinct DGGE profiles for all three molecular markers were observed between the two treatment systems, indicating the selection of specific bacterial populations by the contrasting environmental and operational conditions. Comparative 16S rRNA sequencing indicated a diverse bacterial community in the MBR, with phylotypes from the α- and β-Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes dominating the gene library. The vast majority of sequences retrieved were not closely related to classified organisms or displayed relatively low levels of similarity with any known 16S rRNA gene sequences and thus represent organisms that constitute new taxa. Similarly, the majority of the recovered nosZ sequences were novel and only moderately related to known denitrifiers from the α- and β-Proteobacteria. In contrast, analysis of the amoA gene showed a remarkably simple ammonia-oxidizing community with the detected members almost exclusively affiliated with the Nitrosomonas oligotropha lineage. Major shifts in total bacteria and denitrifying community were detected and these were associated with change in the external carbon added for denitrification enhancement. In spite of this, the MBR was able to maintain a stable process performance during that period. These results significantly expand our knowledge of the biodiversity and population dynamics of microorganisms in MBRs for wastewater treatment. 相似文献

Prepared by coating TiO2/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on a low cost polyester filter cloth (22 μm), a composite membrane (10 μm pore size) was successfully used in an anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactor (A/O-MBR) for treating a simulate wastewater in removing nitrate/ammonium for water reuse in a polyester fiber production plant. Its permeate flux and the anti-fouling properties against extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were studied. Comparing with a commercial (0.1 μm) PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane, similar effluent qualities were achieved, meeting the basic COD requirements for reuse. Anti-EPS accumulation, the TiO2/PVA Polyester composite membrane had higher sustained permeability and required less frequent cleaning. Its filtration time was 4 times longer when operated at a higher flux than the PVDF membrane. The nano-TiO2 enhances the interaction between PVA and polyester, forms a more hydrophilic surface, drastically reduces the contact angle with water and reduces EPS fouling. The slow (trans-membrane pressure) TMP rise, loose cake layer, the low filtration resistances, and the EPS, SEM analysis confirmed the advantage of the composite membrane. Potential in lowering the membrane cost, the operation and maintenance cost, and in enhancing MBR waste water treatment efficiency is expected by the use of this new composite membrane. 相似文献

Modelling the production and degradation of soluble microbial products (SMP) in membrane bioreactors (MBR) 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

MBR biochemical conditions have an effect on membrane fouling and SMP have been attributed to be the main MBR foulant. Thus, predicting the SMP concentration is essential for understanding and controlling MBR fouling. However, existing SMP models are mostly too complex and over-parameterized, resulting in inadequate or absent parameter estimation and validation. This study extends the existing activated sludge model No. 2d (ASM2d) to ASM2dSMP with introduction of only 4 additional SMP-related parameters. Dynamic batch experimental results were used for SMP parameter estimation leading to reasonable parameter confidence intervals. Finally, the ASM2dSMP model was used to predict the impact of operational parameters on SMP concentration. It would found that solid retention time (SRT) is the key parameter controlling the SMP concentration. A lower SRT increased the utilization associated products (UAP) concentration, but decreased the biomass associated products (BAP) concentration and vice versa. A SRT resulting in minimum total SMP concentration can be predicted, and is found to be a relatively low value in the MBR. If MBRs operate under dynamic conditions and biological nutrient removal is required, a moderate SRT condition should be applied. 相似文献

Impact of colloidal and soluble organic material on membrane performance in membrane bioreactors for municipal wastewater treatment 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7

Two parallel membrane bioreactors (2 m3 each) were operated over a period of 2 years. Both pilots were optimised for nitrification, denitrification, and enhanced biological phosphorous elimination, treating identical municipal wastewater under comparable operating conditions. The only constructional difference between the pilots was the position of the denitrification zone (pre-denitrification in pilot 1 and post-denitrification in pilot 2). Despite identical modules and conditions, the two MBRs showed different permeabilities and fouling rates. The differences were not related to the denitrification scheme. In order to find an explanation for the different membrane performances, a one-year investigation was initiated and the membrane performance as well as the operating regime and characteristics of the activated sludge were closely studied. MLSS concentrations, solid retention time, loading rates, and filtration flux were found not to be responsible for the different performance of the submerged modules. These parameters were kept identical in the two pilot plants. Instead, the non-settable fraction of the sludges (soluble and colloidal material, i.e. polysaccharides, proteins and organic colloids) was found to impact fouling and to cause the difference in membrane performance between the two MBR. This fraction was analysed by spectrophotometric and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) methods. In a second step, the origin of these substances was investigated. The results point to microbiologically produced substances such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) or soluble microbial products (SMP). 相似文献

The biodegradation of selected non-adsorbing persistent polar pollutants (P(3)) during wastewater (WW) treatment was studied by comparing a lab-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) running in parallel to activated sludge treatment (AST). The investigated P(3) are relevant representatives or metabolites from the compound classes: pesticides, pharmaceuticals, insect repellents, flame retardants and anionic surfactants. Analyses of all these P(3) at low ng L(-1) levels with sufficient standard deviations was performed in WW influents and effluents. Non-degradable micropollutants, such as EDTA and carbamazepine were not eliminated at all during WW treatment by any technique. However, the MBR showed significant better removals compared to AST for the investigated poorly biodegradable P(3), such as diclofenac, mecoprop and sulfophenylcarboxylates. An application of such an in terms of sludge retention time optimised MBR may lead to a reduction of these P(3) in the watercycle. 相似文献
