Industrial bubble column reactors for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis include complex hydrodynamic, chemical and thermal interaction of three material phases: a population of gas bubbles of different sizes, a liquid phase and solid catalyst particles suspended in the liquid. In this paper, a CFD model of FT reactors has been developed, including variable gas bubble size, effects of the catalyst present in the liquid phase and chemical reactions, with the objective of predicting quantitative reactor performance information useful for design purposes. The model is based on a Eulerian multifluid formulation and includes two phases: liquid-catalyst slurry and syngas bubbles. The bubble size distribution is predicted using a Population Balance (PB) model. Experimentally observed strong influence of the catalyst particles concentration on the bubble size distribution is taken into account by including a catalyst particle induced modification of the turbulent dissipation rate in the liquid. A simple scaling modification to the dissipation rate is proposed to model this influence in the PB model. Additional mass conservation equations are introduced for chemical species associated with the gas and liquid phases. Heterogeneous and homogeneous reaction rates representing simplified FT synthesis are taken from the literature and incorporated in the model.Hydrodynamic effects have been validated against experimental results for laboratory scale bubble columns, including the influence of catalyst particles. Good agreement was observed on bubble size distribution and gas holdup for bubble columns operating in the bubble and churn turbulence regimes. Finally, the complete model including chemical species transport was applied to an industrial scale bubble column. Resulting hydrocarbon production rates were compared to predictions made by previously published one-dimensional semi-empirical models. As confirmed by the comparisons with available data, the modeling methodology proposed in this work represents the physics of FT reactors consistently, since the influence of chemical reactions, catalyst particles, bubble coalescence and breakup on the key bubble-fluid drag force and interfacial area effects are accounted for. However, heat transfer effects have not yet been considered. Inclusion of heat transfer should be the final step in the creation of a comprehensive FT CFD simulation methodology. A significant conclusion from the modeling results is that a highly localized FT reaction rate appears next to the gas injection region when the syngas flow rate is low. As the FT reaction is exothermal, it may lead to a highly concentrated heat release in the liquid. From the design perspective, the introduction of appropriate heat removal devices may be required.  相似文献

The effects of particle concentration and size on hydrodynamics and mass transport in an air–water slurry bubble column were experimentally studied. When the particle concentration αs increased from 0% to 20%, the averaged gas holdup decreased by ~30%, gas holdup of small bubbles and gas–liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient decreased by up to 50%, while the gas holdup of large bubbles increased slightly. The overall effect of particle size was insignificant. A liquid turbulence attenuation model which could quantitatively describe the effects of particle concentration and size was first proposed. Semi-empirical correlations were obtained based on extensive experimental data in a wide range of operating conditions and corrected liquid properties. The gas holdup and mass transfer coefficient calculated by the correlations agreed with the experimental data from both two-phase and three-phase bubble columns, with a maximum error <25%.  相似文献

In this paper we study the mass transfer process of ozone dissolution in a bubble plume inside a rectangular water tank, as a model problem for a water purification system. The effect of bubble diameter and plume structure on mass transfer efficiency of ozone in bubble plumes is investigated numerically. In order to capture the detailed plume structure, the interaction between liquid and bubbles is treated by a two-way coupling Euler-Lagrange method. The motion of the continuous phase (a mixture of liquid and gas bubbles) is solved using a finite difference method in an Eulerian framework. The motion of the dispersed phase (bubbles) is tracked individually in a Lagrangian approach. The ozone transfer process from bubbles to liquid is computed by modelling the mass transfer rate of individual bubbles. Our numerical results show a nonlinear dependence of the ozone dissolution efficiency on the initial bubble size. The dissolution efficiency varies rapidly when the initial bubble size reaches certain value while the change of efficiency is much slower at other bubble sizes. Therefore, for a given tank size it is not necessary to generate bubbles much smaller than the optimal size. This result is of importance for engineering since it is difficult to generate small bubbles in practice. Our results also show that the instantaneous dissolution rate of ozone could be increased by increasing the initial volumetric fraction of ozone inside bubbles even up to 20% while maintaining the dissolution efficiency.  相似文献

Microchannels have great potential in intensification of gas–liquid–liquid reactions involving reacting gases, such as hydrogenation. This work uses CO2–octane–water system to model the hydrodynamics and mass transfer of such systems in a microchannel with double T‐junctions. Segmented flows are generated with three inlet sequences and the size laws of dispersed phases are obtained. Three generation mechanisms of dispersed gas bubbles/water droplets are identified: squeezing by the oil phase, cutting by the droplet/bubble, cutting by the water–oil/gas–oil interface. Based on the gas dissolution rate, the mass transfer coefficients are calculated. It is found that water droplet can significantly enhance the transfer of CO2 into the oil phase initially. When bubble‐droplet cluster are formed downstream the microchannel, droplet will retard the mass transfer. Other characteristics such as phase hold‐up, bubble velocity and bubble dissolution rate are also discussed. The information is beneficial for microreactor design when applying three‐phase reactions. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 1727–1739, 2017  相似文献

The hydrodynamics of bubbly flows is dominated by bubble‐induced turbulence and bubble‐bubble interactions. Both phenomena influence the gas‐liquid mass transfer as well as the mixing of reactants. If the time scales of mass transfer and mixing are in the same order as the time scales of a parallel‐consecutive reaction, the yield and selectivity will be affected by the local hydrodynamics. An experimental setup is presented that enables the investigation of mass transfer during well‐defined and adjustable bubble collisions. The influence of CO2 bubble collisions on mass transfer is measured and modeled with a modified Sherwood number correlation. Further visualization of the concentration field in the vicinity of O2 bubbles by means of laser‐induced fluorescence demonstrates the dependency of mass transfer from a chemical reaction and permits the development of a first model approach.  相似文献

To investigate the mechanism of gas absorption from a bubble containing soluble and insoluble components, a gaseous mixture of ammonia and nitrogen was bubbled into water. The growth curve, volume, surface area and shape of the growing bubbles were measured with parameters such as inlet gas composition, gas flow rate and gas chamber volume. The bubble volume decreased with the increasing composition of ammonia in a bubble, decreasing gas chamber volume and decreasing gas flow rate.To reasonably express the mass transfer from the bulk of a gas in a bubble to the bulk of a liquid, the overall mass transfer resistance was evaluated by the mass transfers in the gas phase, interface and liquid phase. The non-spherical bubble formation model combined with the overall mass transfer resistance estimated well experimental bubble shape, bubble volume at its detachment from an orifice, growth rate and mass transfer rate. Moreover, the change of concentration with bubble growth time and the fractional absorption during bubble formation were simulated.  相似文献

The paper deals with hydrodynamics in bubble columns. The objective of the paper is to study stability and mixing in a bubble column. The modeling of parameters such as stationary drag and added mass is addressed. In addition, the effect of bubble deformation in terms of eccentricity is highlighted. In a previous paper, the transition between homogeneous and heterogeneous regimes in bubble column without liquid flow has been shown to be driven by the deformation of the bubbles associated to drag and added mass. In the present paper, this work is generalized to bubble column with liquid flow and to the transition from bubble flow to slug flow in a vertical pipe. Numerical simulations of gas-liquid reactors are presented. The numerical simulations are validated in the case of gas plume after the Becker et al. data (Becker, S., Sokolichin, A., & Eigenberg, G. (1994) Gas-liquid flow in bubble columns and loop reactors: Part II. Comparison of detailed experiments and flow simulations. Chemical Engineering Science, 49 (24B), 5747-5762. The numerical simulations are finally applied to a bubble column. The simulations of residence time distribution coupled to transient hydrodynamics are shown to be very sensitive to the modeling of interfacial transfer of momentum from the bubbles to the liquid in terms of drag and added mass, including the effect of bubble deformation.  相似文献

A model study of the sonochemical removal of nitric oxide (NO) in a bubble column reactor is presented. The detailed model is developed to investigate the actual cavitation phenomena taking place during the absorption of NO. The expansion and subsequent collapse of cavitation bubble according to the theory of cavity collapse—initially developed by Lord Rayleigh and then improved on by coupling the energy balance equation of the bubble and the chemical reactions taking place inside the cavity to calculate the composition of different species formed during the collapse—are modeled. The model takes into consideration (1) cavitation bubble dynamics, (2) generation and transfer of oxidizing species from bubble collapse through reaction kinetics, (3) transfer of NO from gas to liquid, and (4) chemical reactions of oxidizing species with dissolved NO. The results of the simulations surprisingly indicate that the chemistry induced by ultrasonic cavitation cannot explain the absorption of NO beyond about 30% of the inlet concentration if the mass transfer is assumed to be the same as that in the bubble column without ultrasound. When experimental values of mass‐transfer coefficients, calculated in the studies by other researchers (which are in the range of about five times the physical mass‐transfer coefficient in a bubble column), are used, absorption up to 80% are calculated in the simulations consistent with experimental results obtained from the sonochemical bubble column reactor. The present model provides a framework on which more robust and rigorous models can be developed for the complex gas‐liquid sonochemical systems and reactors. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 2397–2411, 2012  相似文献

The complex composition of the liquid media in bubble column reactors makes their understanding and theoretical modelling challenging. In this work we have studied the effect of surface tension and contaminants, salts, on the mass transfer rates from a theoretical point of view, looking for a deeper understanding on the effect of surface active species which usually reduce surface tension and modify bubble surface behaviour. The specific contact area is obtained using a population balance where the effect of the presence of contaminants is addressed by the proper theoretical closures for bubble coalescence efficiency, for partially and fully immobile surfaces, and bubble break-up. Meanwhile, the contribution of contaminants to the liquid-film resistance is implemented as function of the coverage of the surface of the bubbles. It was found that the degree of bubble surface coverage not only affects bubble coalescence but also their break-up. The ion strength defines bubbles stability and the critical Weber number can be predicted as function of ion strength. Furthermore, the mass transfer rates are function of the surface coverage by the electrolytes. The model was able to predict kLa taking into account the fact that the concentration profiles surrounding individual bubbles are not completely developed due to the presence of other bubbles, in agreement with previous results from the literature.  相似文献

The slug and cell model of liquid-phase mixing has been extended to consider the effects of interphase mass transfer and liquid-phase chemical reaction in isothermal churn-turbulent bubble columns. Inclusion of the effects of the gas phase is straightforward since the gas phase has previously been considered as it strongly affects the mixing of the liquid phase. The computational simplicity of the slug and cell model has been retained with the species conservation equations being reduced to a system of algebraic equations. The behavior of the model has been examined for two cases: (1) liquid-phase chemical reaction in the absence of interphase mass transfer and (2) in the presence of interphase mass transfer without liquid-phase chemical reaction. In the second case the model behavior has been compared to available literature data for the absorption of oxygen into water.  相似文献

Effect of bubble contamination on rise velocity and mass transfer   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An apparatus where individual bubbles are kept stationary in a downward liquid flow was adapted to simultaneously (i) follow mass transfer to/from a single bubble as it inevitably gets contaminated; (ii) follow its shape; and (iii) periodically measure its terminal velocity. This apparatus allows bubbles to be monitored for much longer periods of time than does the monitoring of rising bubbles. Thus, the effect of trace contaminants on bubbles of low solubility gases, like air, may be studied.Experiments were done with air bubbles of 1-5 mm initial equivalent diameter in a water stream. The partial pressure of air in the liquid could be manipulated, allowing bubbles to be either dissolving or kept at an approximately constant diameter. Both drag coefficient and gas-liquid mass transfer results were interpreted in terms of bubble contamination kinetics using a simplified stagnant cap model. Drag coefficient was calculated from stagnant cap size using an adaptation of Sadhal and Johnson's model (J. Fluid Mech. 126 (1983) 237).Gas-liquid mass transfer modelling assumed two mass transfer coefficients, one for the clean front of the bubble, the other for the stagnant cap. Adjusted values of these coefficients are consistent with theoretical predictions from Higbie's and Frössling's equations, respectively.  相似文献

New aspects of the influence of the wake of bubbles on fluid dynamics and mass transfer in bubble columns. Wake-phenomena behind solid and fluid particles moving in a continuous liquid are an important fluid-dynamic effect which has a pronounced influence on heat- and mass transfer in two-phase dispersions. In this paper results reported in the literature are used to analyse the influence of wakes behind bubbles on the hydrodynamics of bubble columns. A new class of model is introduced to describe the flow and mixing of the liquid phase, taking into account major hydrodynamic effects.  相似文献

In this paper we stress analogies in the hydrodynamic behaviour of gassolid fluidized beds and bubble columns. Using published experimental data, it is demonstrated that the analogous hydrodynamic-behaviour is not only qualitative but also quantitative in nature. Specifically, we show the following.(1) The gas holdup in the homogeneous regimes of bubble columns and fluidized beds can be modelled in a unified way using Vslip = υ(1 − ϵd)n−1, where Vslip refers to the slip velocity between the dispersed (bubbles or particles) and continuous phases and ϵd the dispersed phase holdup. The Richardson-Zaki exponent n decreases with increasing gas density.(2) The transition from homogeneous to heterogeneous flow regimes in gasliquid bubble columns and gassolid fluid beds is delayed by increasing system pressure. Extrapolation of the influence of increased gas density allows us to consider liquidliquid dispersions and liquidsolid fluid beds as limiting cases.(3) In the heterogeneous flow regime of operation the classic two-phase theory of fluidized beds can be applied with profit to also describe the hydrodynamics of gasliquid bubble columns provided that the “dilute” phase is identified with the fast-rising large bubbles and the “dense” phase is identified with the liquid phase containing entrained “small” bubbles. Tentative analogies can also be drawn for the interphase mass transfer processes.(4) The “dense” phase backmixing can be modelled in a unified manner.(5) The two-phase theory can be extended to describe slurry reactors. It is argued that, because of cross-fertilization of concepts and information, appreciation of analogies can be invaluable tool in scaling up.  相似文献

The dynamic process of gas absorption from a CO2 bubble into a liquid is examined in the presence of satellite bubbles. The bubble under consideration is held stationary, except its jittering, by the liquid flowing downward. The mass transfer rate is determined by monitoring the rate of reduction in the equivalent bubble diameter during the initial absorption process. It is found that the interaction with the satellite bubbles generally hampers the dissolution of the primary bubble. The extent of reduction in the dissolution rate increases with the net contacting time during the interaction. When the secondary bubbles interact with the primary bubble mainly outside of its wake, however, the dissolution tends to be enhanced due to induced turbulence in the surrounding liquid flow. A simple theoretical model is developed to simulate the observed results as well as the basic features prevailing in a recently proposed scheme, called the GLAD system, for shallow injection of CO2 gas into seawater.  相似文献

The behavior of chitosan and two kinds of chitosan derivatives in carbon dioxide absorption in a bubble column contactor is analyzed. The effects of absorption type (physical or chemical), polymer type, concentration, and liquid‐phase physical properties on hydrodynamics (bubble size, gas holdup, and specific interfacial area) and mass transfer (absorption rate and mass transfer coefficient) are evaluated.  相似文献

Gas-liquid mass transfer in a bubble column in both the homogeneous and heterogeneous flow regimes was studied by numerical simulations with a CFD-PBM (computation fluid dynamics-population balance model) coupled model and a gas-liquid mass transfer model. In the CFD-PBM coupled model, the gas-liquid interfacial area a is calculated from the gas holdup and bubble size distribution. In this work, multiple mechanisms for bubble coalescence, including coalescence due to turbulent eddies, different bubble rise velocities and bubble wake entrainment, and for bubble breakup due to eddy collision and instability of large bubbles were considered. Previous studies show that these considerations are crucial for proper predictions of both the homogenous and the heterogeneous flow regimes. Many parameters may affect the mass transfer coefficient, including the bubble size distribution, bubble slip velocity, turbulent energy dissipation rate and bubble coalescence and breakup. These complex factors were quantitatively counted in the CFD-PBM coupled model. For the mass transfer coefficient kl, two typical models were compared, namely the eddy cell model in which kl depends on the turbulent energy dissipation rate, and the slip penetration model in which kl depends on the bubble size and bubble slip velocity. Reasonable predictions of kla were obtained with both models in a wide range of superficial gas velocity, with only a slight modification of the model constants. The simulation results show that CFD-PBM coupled model is an efficient method for predicting the hydrodynamics, bubble size distribution, interfacial area and gas-liquid mass transfer rate in a bubble column.  相似文献

It is common to empirically correlate volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa for predicting gas-liquid mass transfer in industrial applications, and the investigation of single bubble mass transfer is crucial for a detailed understanding of mass transfer mechanism. In this work, experiments, models and simulations based on the experimental results were highlighted to elucidate the mass transfer between single bubbles and ambient liquid. The experimental setups, measurement methods, the mass transfer of single bubbles in the Newtonian and the nonNewtonian liquid, models derived from the concept of eddy diffusion, the extension of Whitman's, Higbie's and Danckwerts' models, or dimensionless numbers, and simulation methods on turbulence, gas-liquid partition methods and mass transfer source term determination are introduced and commented on. Although people have a great knowledge on mass transfer between single bubbles and ambient liquid in single conditions, it is still insufficient when facing complex liquid conditions or some phenomena such as turbulence, contamination or non-Newtonian behavior. Additional studies on single bubbles are required for experiments and models in various liquid conditions in future.

CFD simulations have been carried out in a full three‐dimensional, unsteady, Eulerian framework to simulate hydrodynamic/thermal coupling in a bubble column with internals. A first part of the study, dedicated to the hydrodynamic/thermal coupling in liquid single‐phase flows, showed that assuming constant wall temperature on the internals constitutes a reasonable approximation in lieu of comprehensive simulations encompassing shell flow and coolant flow together. A second part dealing with the hydrodynamics of gas–liquid flows in a bubble column with internals showed that a RNG k–ε turbulence model formulation accounting for gas‐induced turbulence was a relevant choice. The last part used these conclusions to build a hydrodynamic/thermal coupling model of a gas–liquid flow in a bubble column with internals. With a per‐phase RNG k–ε turbulence model and assuming constant wall temperature, it was possible to simulate heat transfer phenomena consistent with experimentally measured heat transfer coefficients. © 2010 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010  相似文献
