The quantitative analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) relies heavily on methods of time series analysis. A quantitative approach seems indispensable for research (be it clinical or basic neurophysical research), but it can also be a useful information for purely clinical purposes. Apart from the ongoing spontaneous EEG, evoked potentials (EPs) also play an important role. They can be elicited by simple sensory stimuli or more complex stimuli. Their analysis requires methods which are different from those for the spontaneous EEG. Those methods operate usually in the time domain and offer many challenging problems to statisticians. Methods for analysing the spontaneous EEG usually work in the frequency domain in terms of spectra and coherences. Biomedical engineers who take care of the equipment are usually also trained in time series analysis. Thus, they have contributed much more to methodological progress for analysing EEGs and EPs, compared with statisticians. However, the availability of a sample of subjects, and the associated problems in modelling followed by an inferential analysis could make a larger influence from the statistical side quite profitable. This paper tries to give an overview of a fascinating area. In doing so we treat more extensively problems with some statistical appeal. This leads inevitably to some overlap with our own work.  相似文献

In an earlier paper (Storace and Wolf, 1979), the functional anatomy of the finger was studied by considering the equilibrium of tendon forces and externally applied forces. The current work presents an alternative approach which studies the finger's functional anatomy from a kinematic viewpoint. This approach, based on measured tendon displacement, can be used to graphically display the criteria for which normal finger function will exist. Examples of the application of this procedure to normal and non-normal finger conditions are presented to demonstrate its utility.  相似文献

The thesis of this article is that self psychology can be construed as a superego psychology in that both involve an intensive study of the self-regulatory and self-evaluative functions of the mind and their precursors in early object relations. Kohut's clinical contribution can be redefined in terms of the structural model as the delineation of the regressive, pathological, and healthy methods through which the ego attempts to restore the approval of the superego. Kohut's grandiose self can be seen as a precursor of the ego ideal and his idealized parent imago as a precursor of conscience. Conflict between the ego ideal and the conscience constitutes a vital aspect of intrapsychic functioning which self psychology has neglected in its focus upon developmental arrest. Sexual and aggressive aims play an important role in regaining the approval of the superego through their unique capacity to evoke a sense of the omnipotence of the corporeal self. The phase diagram and thermodynamic data for the In-Ga-Sb system are fit with a model for the III-V liquid phases, in which the enthalpy and excess entropy of mixing are quartic functions of the atomic fraction and the enthalpy of mixing is a quadratic function of temperature. The Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation of the III-V compounds are obtained as functions of temperature from the heat capacities and the standard enthalpy and entropy of formation at 298 K. The fits are quantitatively satisfactory and better than any hitherto obtained, particularly for the III-V liquidus lines and the ternary liquid. The partial pressures of Sb2 and Sb4 are calculated along the three phase curves of In1-uGauJSb(s), and relations given to obtain the relative chemical potentials of In and/or Ga are from these. The enthalpy of mixing of the III-V liquids is calculated for a few hundred degrees above the compound melting points, where presently there are no data. Characteristics of an improved model are postulated.  相似文献

The casting furnace plays a central role in the production of aluminum. Its design and operation are complex and involve some 450 parameters. There is a need for a model to predict and analyze its performance. We propose a simplified model in which each main component of the furnace is treated as a 1-D heat conduction medium. Based on the equations of conservation of mass, energy, and chemical species, complemented by the equations of conduction and the Hottel’s formulation of radiative heat transfer, this dynamic model can simulate any sequence of operations such as loading, heating, stirring, skimming … that constitutes a batch, and can take into account other operational details such as the opening of doors. It is validated on a real furnace, then used to predict furnace performance in other modes of operation, and also to determine an optimal fuel flow that minimizes a chosen cost function.  相似文献

Plasma glucose, insulin and triglyceride changes in response to a standard breakfast and an oral glucose tolerance test have been studied in normal, obese and diabetic subjects. Mild diabetics with an abnormal oral glucose tolerance test may have normal or near-normal incremental glucose responses to a standard breakfast. A raised fasting plasma glucose is the predominant day-to-day glucose abnormality of mild diabetes. Diabetics have decreased insulin responses to oral glucose compared with the meal, and the deficient insulin response to glucose probably accounts for both the raised fasting plasma glucose levels and the abnormal oral GTT. The initial insulin response to a meal is normal in mild diabetics, and is probably stimulated by secretogogues other than glucose. The oral glucose tolerance test is apposite for the diagnosis of diabetes in view of the impaired insulin response to glucose, but accurate measurement of the basal plasma glucose may be of equal value. The diabetic and obese subjects had normal triglyceride levels, and there was no detectable impairment of disposal of the exogenous triglyceride following the breakfast.  相似文献

This article presents a framework for the organization of affective processes, including the affective traits, moods, and emotions. Section 1 introduces the levels-of-analysis approach, defines the three levels of affect, presents criteria for ordering these levels hierarchically in terms of simple and complex temporally driven processes, and examines the interrelations among the various levels of affect, including an in-depth analysis of affective trait-emotion relationships. Section 2 offers an application of the hierarchical view to research on affect-cognition interactions, including a brief review of affect congruency effects and a discussion of the conceptual and empirical challenges to such research necessitated by consideration of the differences among the levels of affect. PURPOSE: To identify the predictive risk factors for rupture of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAA). METHODS: Thirty-one patients with TAA who did not have the indications for surgical repair of the aneurysm were selected. Inclusion criteria were maximum diameter less than 60 mm, refusal of surgical treatment, and high surgical risk. The selected patients participated in a prospective follow-up study for a median period of 47 months and underwent at least two thoracoabdominal computed tomographic scans a year to measure transverse and anteroposterior diameters. Identification of the predictive factors associated with rupture was undertaken with multivariate analysis by means of Cox regression model. RESULTS: During the study period five patients underwent elective repair, six died of unrelated causes, nine had aneurysms that ruptured (all with diameters greater than 50 mm), and 11 reached the end of the study without rupture or surgical management. Initial anteroposterior diameter and annual growth rate of the anteroposterior diameter were the variables associated with rupture of the TAA according to the multivariate statistical analysis by means of Cox regression model. CONCLUSION: We recommend elective repair for a fit patient with asymptomatic TAA with an initial anteroposterior diameter of 50 mm only when there is an annual growth rate of at least 10 mm. Patients with similar diameters but with smaller annual growth rates should be treated conservatively and undergo thoracoabdominal computed tomography every 6 months. Patients with an initial anteroposterior diameter of 60 mm and an annual growth rate of 6 mm should undergo surgical treatment. These guidelines for elective repair of TAA are based on the results of a relatively small series and have to be carefully individualized for each patient.  相似文献

In trypanosomes, all mRNAs possess a spliced leader (SL) at their 5' end. SL is added to pre-mRNA via trans -splicing from a small RNA, the SL RNA. To examine structure-function aspects of the trypanosomatid SL RNA, an in vivo system was developed in the monogenetic trypanosomatid Leptomonas collosoma to analyze the function of chimeric and site-directed SL RNA mutants in trans -splicing. Stable cell lines expressing chimeric and mutated SL RNA from the authentic SL RNA regulatory unit were obtained. The chimeric RNA was expressed and assembled into an SL RNP particle, but could not serve as a substrate in splicing. Mutations in loop II and III of L.collosoma SL RNA formed the Y structure intermediate. In addition, a double SL RNA mutant in loop II, and positions 7 and 8 of the intron, also formed the Y structure intermediate, suggesting that these intron positions, although proposed to participate in the interaction of SL RNA with U5, may not be crucial for the first step of the trans -splicing reaction. A mutation in the exon located in loop I was not utilized in splicing, suggesting the importance of exon sequences for trans -splicing in trypanosomes. However, a double SL RNA mutant in loop II and exon position 31 was utilized in both steps of splicing; the mutant thus provides a model molecule for further analysis of positions essential for the function of the SL RNA.  相似文献

Glycerol dehydrogenase catalyzes the reversible NAD(+)-dependent oxidation of glycerol to form dihydroxyacetone. Initial velocity, product, and dead-end inhibition studies performed for the forward and reverse reactions support an ordered kinetic mechanism with NAD+ binding first and NADH released last. A monovalent cation is required for enzymatic activity and glycerol binding, with K+ having the highest activity as measured by V. The pH dependence of the kinetic parameters V and V/Kglycerol, as well as the temperature dependence of the V pH profile, suggested that an enzymic carboxylate group functions as a base in catalysis. The pH dependence of the primary deuterium kinetic isotope effect shows that DV/Kglycerol increases from a pH-independent value of 1.15 at high pH values to a pH-independent value of 2.44 at low pH values. DV exhibits a similar pH dependence, increasing from a pH-independent value of 2.57 at high pH values to a pH independent value of 4.88 at low pH values. A chemical mechanism for enzymatic glycerol oxidation is proposed based on the data.  相似文献

Results of an experiment with 1,033 female CF1 albino mice indicate that detaining Ss for some time in the safe compartment of the apparatus in which they had been conditioned decreased the level of the passive-avoidance CR. The extent of the decrease varied (a) as a direct function of the duration of the detention period, and (b) as an inverse function of the time interval between detention and learning trial and of the strength of the CR. After detention the CR, though weakened, underwent the usual process of incubation. When Ss were exposed to 2 periods of detention, the 2nd period did not produce any additional amnesic effect, although it would have been effective if Ss had been exposed to it alone. (19 ref.)
