木结构是东南大学与加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学(UBC)进行国际联合设置的新课程。双方联合制定课程教学计划,依托加方教师、加拿大木业协会的专家等作为辅导教师,采用以中文为主、融合英文相关文献的教材进行双语教学。分组组织学生,学生根据所研讨的课题,提出解决问题的思想、方法和技术路线等,进行Seminar教学范式的探索。

Computational Fluid Dynamics for Architectural Design

The international performance of British construction companies 19901996

Large construction companies are increasingly having to seek work on an international basis. A recent stated aim of some of the larger British construction companies has been to increase their overseas activities to counteract some of the problems within the domestic construction market. This paper examines the international performance of British construction firms during the period 1990–96. The principle findings indicate that British firms had increased their overseas activities during the study period. However despite theory to the contrary (Seymour, 1987) and contrary to the practice of some competitors, they had tended to conduct the major share of their overseas work in developed countries. This finding is put forward to suggest that the British companies' overseas operations have done little to offset the downturn in domestic workload, as developed countries historically suffer similar recessions to the UK.

De plus en plus, les grandes sociétés du BTP doivent se diriger vers les marchés extérieurs pour y trouver des commandes. En Grande-Bretagne, certaines de ces sociétés, parmi les plus importantes, ont récemment déclaré que leur objectif était d'augmenter leurs activités à l'étranger pour compenser certains problèmes qu'elles rencontraient sur le marché intérieur. Cet article examine les résultats à l'exportation de sociétés britanniques du BTP entre 1990 et 1996. Il ressort de cette étude qu'au cours de cette période, les firmes britanniques ont développé leur activité à l'étranger. Toutefois, en dépit d'une théorie contraire (Seymour, 1987) et allant à l'encontre des habitudes de certains concurrents, elles ont eu tendance à exécuter la majeure partie de leurs contrats à l'étranger dans des pays industrialisés. Cette constatation est mise en avant pour suggérer que les industriels britanniques opérant à l'étranger ont peu fait pour compenser le recul des activités sur le territoire national, alors que les pays industrialisés connaissent les mêmes difficultés que le Royaume-Uni.     

Jan Kaplický (1937-2009): Homage to an Extraordinary Life of Unfulfilled Dreams and Major Successes

Jan Kaplický's visionary work for Future Systems was some of the most imaginative and inspiring of the last few decades. His passion and excitement for architecture exudes through such remarkable forms as the Lord's Media Centre and Selfridges in Birmingham. It was also effectively disseminated through his publications: most notably the For Inspiration Only picture books that he produced for Wiley-Academy in the late 1990s. A staunch believer in the power of books and journals, he was a loyal supporter of AD and an editorial board member for many years; always generous with his time and willing to express his ideas candidly. Here, close friend and fellow Czech architect and writer Ivan Margolius, celebrates not only Kaplicky the architect, but also the extraordinary life and sensibility of the man behind his work. Selected Swiss Projects

Torsten Schmiedeknecht describes four Swiss buildings that adopt a formal language of Rationalist rigour to dramatic effect. Despite all being institutional buildings, they vary widely in their treatments interpreting a Rationalist vocabulary in very different ways, from the unstinting austerity of GWJ Architekten's UVEK Administration Centre to Andrea Bassi's intentionally playful La Maladière Primary School in Neuchâtel. Woven Surface and Form

The Advanced Geometry Unit (AGU) at Arup, founded by Cecil Balmond and Charles Walker, has become synonymous with a highly mathematical, topological approach to architecture. It has, however, collaborated on some of the most exciting experimental fabric structures of recent years, including Anish Kapoor's Marsyas at Tate Modern and Rem Koolhaas's Cosmic Egg at the Serpentine Gallery. Linking Structure and Parametric Geometry

The Karamba plug-in developed by Clemens Preisinger in collaboration with Bollinger + Grohmann Engineers has been developed to predict the behaviour of structures under external loads. Intended to be used by architects rather than being solely confined to an engineering setting, it enables a seamless flow of data between structural and geometric models. Preisinger here describes the program's evolution and application.     

Thinking with Matter

Mark West considers the qualities of the analogue against the digital in the context of his work at the Centre for Architectural Structures and Technology (CAST) at Manitoba. Unable to fault the computer's ability to provide complex calculations for the fabrication of forms, he insists that the fidelity and investigative potential that he has found in the reality of the physical model and hand-drafted drawing have yet to be surpassed. Simulating the User Experience: Design Optimisation for Visitor Comfort

Much emphasis in computation has been put on the potential of building information modelling (BIM) and other software in the coordination of the design and construction process and on building performance. What, however, can modelling techniques offer to shift the focus to simulating the user experience? Shrikant Sharma and Al Fisher of Buro Happold SMART Solutions, which offers specialist computational innovation services to external clients, describe how their team has developed SMART Move, a crowd-modelling software that has been used in the development of the designs for Wilkinson Eyre's Exeter University Forum and Foster + Partners' Thomas Deacon Academy.     

Urban contrast and neo-Toryism: on the social and political symbolism of The Architectural Review's Townscape campaign

Using archival evidence from Hastings' unpublished writings, as well as from representative Townscape publications, this essay chronologically traces the genesis and development of Townscape as social and political project within the history of British planning theory. Revising recent scholarship on Townscape, the article posits that Townscape embraced a conservative project, in many ways resistant to the emerging welfare state and to the dominant government consensus for regionalist principles of post-war reconstruction. It argues that Townscape posited an anti-collectivist model of society, bound together, not through a consensus of aims or viewpoints, but through a composite ecology of individualizing difference, developed according to one's unique cultural role or ‘bias’. Paralleling conservative British political discourses of the period, Townscape aestheticized and naturalized such differences through a tri-partite model of social types and a metaphorical construction of society as nature. Understanding the central significance of this social and political symbolism allows for new understanding of Townscape's construction of social complexity, as well as its use of organic analogies to describe social difference.     

Fawood Children's Centre

Jeremy Melvin visits the Fawood Children's Centre on the Stonebridge Estate in northwest London and discovers how Alsop and Partners have creatively worked within the bounds of policy to produce a building with an exhilarating choice of recycled materials that gives children back the freedom to play in an exciting environment without wrapping them up in cotton wool.
