The discriminability of crossed-disparity (near) and uncrossed-disparity as a function of their location in the upper-left, upper-right, lower-left, and lower-right quadrants of the visual field. Discriminability was assessed using choice reaction-time (RT) and accuracy measures. While near targets were recognized equally well in the upper and lower fields, far targets were perceived more easily in the upper visual field. The discriminability of far targets was particularly poor in the lower left quadrant. These results point to the existence of fundamental asymmetries in perceiving crossed and uncrossed disparities along the vertical and lateral axes.  相似文献

Vertical phoria (vertical vergence in the absence of binocular feedback) can be trained to vary with non-visual cues such as vertical conjugate eye position, horizontal conjugate eye position and horizontal vergence. These prior studies demonstrated a low-level association or coupling between vertical vergence and several oculomotor cues. As a test of the potential independence of multiple eye-position cues for vertical vergence, context-specific adaptation experiments were conducted in three orthogonal adapting planes (midsagittal, frontoparallel, and transverse). Four vertical disparities in each of these planes were associated with various combinations of two specific components of eye position. Vertical disparities in the plane were associated with horizontal vergence and vertical conjugate eye position; vertical disparities in the frontoparallel plane were associated with horizontal and vertical conjugate eye position; and vertical disparities in the transverse plane were associated with horizontal vergence and horizontal conjugate eye position. The results demonstrate that vertical vergence can be adapted to respond to specific combinations of two different sources of eye-position information. The results are modeled with an association matrix whose inputs are two classes of eye position and whose weighted output is vertical vergence.  相似文献

We used a noise masking technique to test the hypothesis that detection is subserved by only two chromatic postreceptoral mechanisms (red-green and blue-yellow) and one achromatic (luminance) mechanism. The task was to detect a 1-c/deg Gaussian enveloped grating presented in a mask of static, spatially low-passed binary or Gaussian distributed noise. In the main experiment, the direction of the test stimulus (termed the signal) was constant in cone contrast space, and the direction of the noise was sampled in equally spaced directions within a plane (the noise plane) in the space. The signal was chosen to coincide with one of the three cardinal directions of three postulated mechanisms. The noise plane was selected to span two of the cardinal directions, including that chosen as the signal direction. As the noise direction was sampled around the noise plane, the signal detection threshold was found to vary in accordance with a linear cosine model, which predicted noise directions yielding maximum and minimum masking of the signal. In the direction of minimum masking (termed a null direction), the noise was found to have no masking effect on the signal. Moreover, the null was not orthogonal to the signal direction but lay instead in one of the cardinal directions. Our findings suggest that detection is mediated by only three mechanisms. In a further experiment we found little or no cross masking between each pair of cardinal directions up to the limit of our noise mask contrasts. This further supports the presence of no more than three independent postreceptoral mechanisms.  相似文献

目的:应用Mimic,软件重建颞下咽旁间隙肿瘤增强CT影像中的颅骨、血管及肿物,探讨三维CT重建技术在颞下咽旁间隙肿瘤的诊断及术前手术设计的临床意义.方法:选取4个颞下咽旁间隙肿瘤患者,利用Siemens16排螺旋CT薄层扫描技术,基于2 mm层厚,Mimics 软件直接读人Dicom格式原始数据,利用表面阴影重建法分别重建血管、颅骨及肿瘤,显示其空间关系.结果:观察三维重建图像,可以清晰显示肿瘤范围、大小、位置及其与血管和颅骨的关系.结论:利用Mimics软件三维重建增强CT可以清晰显示颞下咽旁间隙肿瘤的特征及其与颅骨、血管关系,有利于手术方案设计,可以避免手术中损伤重要解剖结构.  相似文献

This paper presents a method to determine the stereoradiographic planes and anatomical vertebral landmarks giving the most reliable three-dimensional reconstructions of the thoracic and lumbar spine for clinical studies. The present investigation was limited to stereoradiographic setups with a normal vertical stereo base. Possible X-ray tube positions are thus corresponding to angles ranging from 0 (conventional posteroanterior radiograph) up to 30 degrees (dimension of the X-ray room). An X-ray phantom was used as a specimen from which three-dimensional reconstructions with the direct linear transformation (DLT) algorithm were obtained. Visibility of landmarks located on pedicles, end-plates, transverse and spinous processes was evaluated for the whole thoracic and lumbar spine (T1 to L5). Process landmarks were discarded because their poor visibility on radiographs produced inaccurate three-dimensional reconstructions. Considering the size, shape and orientation of vertebrae, an angle of 20 degrees between the posteroanterior horizontal position and the angled position of the X-ray tube gave optimal results. Landmarks located on pedicles and end-plates produced the most reliable three-dimensional reconstructions of the spine. Pedicles were found to be more reliable landmarks than end-plates. Validation of the technique with reconstructed steel beads reveals three-dimensional errors under 1.0 mm. Since vertebral landmarks were more difficult to identify on radiographs than steel beads, reconstruction results were compared with those obtained with a biplanar orthogonal setup. This shows that three-dimensional errors of 8.0 mm may be expected on actual reconstructions of the spine and errors as large as 15.0 mm may be present on poorly visible landmarks.  相似文献

Advancements in implant therapy have expanded the prosthetic options available to treat edentulous patients. The dental professional must be able to accurately diagnose the status of the intraoral environmental in order to provide the patient with appropriate treatment and a suitable restorative result. Skeletal relationships, arch malalignment, implant angulation, and ridge morphology must be evaluated during initial treatment planning and incorporated into the definitive prosthetic result. The hypothesis that representation of projective shape is preattentive whereas representation of objective shape in 3-dimensional space requires allocation of attention was tested in 2 visual search and 2 precuing experiments. In the visual search experiments, the slope for projective shape search was expected to approach 0 and that for objective shape search was expected to be a positive monotonic function of set size. In the precuing experiments, the effects of precuing were expected to be largely limited to the task requiring representation of objective shape. The overall pattern of results conformed to expectations. The findings are interpreted in the context of a model of shape-at-a-slant processing set out by W. Epstein and B. In the monkey, premotor neurons for vertical gaze are located in the mesencephalic reticular formation: the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle (riMLF) contains medium-lead burst neurons, and the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (iC) acts as integrator for the eye-velocity signals to eye-position signals. Both nuclei lie adjacent to each other and are similar in appearance at the transition zone in Nissl-stained sections, which makes a delineation of the functionally different nuclei difficult in human. For a neuropathologic analysis of degenerative changes in saccadic disorders of patients, the histologic identification of the riMLF and the iC is important. The aim of this study is to identify both nuclei in human by using parvalbumin as a histologic marker. First, in monkeys the premotor neurons in riMLF and iC were identified by trans-synaptic labelling after injections of tetanus toxin fragment C into vertical-pulling eye muscles. Premotor neurons were found in the riMLF mainly ipsilateral to the corresponding eye muscle motoneurons and on both sides within the iC, but here the labelled cell populations differed: the contralateral side contained more medium-sized cells compared with the mainly small-sized cell population on the ipsilateral side. Double labelling showed that almost all premotor neurons in the iC and all premotor neurons in the riMLF were parvalbumin-immunoreactive. The immunocytochemical staining of human brainstem sections revealed the riMLF as a cluster of medium-sized, elongated parvalbumin-positive cells, with a similar appearance and at a similar location as that in monkey: a wing-shaped nucleus dorsomedial to the red nucleus, rostral to the traversing tractus retroflexus, dorsally bordered by the thalamo-subthalamic paramedian artery. The adjacent iC could be distinguished easily by its more densely packed, round parvalbumin-immunoreactive neurons. The exact identification of premotor neurons of the vertical system in the normal human brain provides a reference basis for the neuropathologic analysis of vertical gaze disorders at a cellular level.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the production of sibilant sounds involved adopting a jaw position that corresponded to the closest vertical speaking space (CSS), by analysis of the smallest vertical excursion of the mandible during the performance of different phonetic exercises. A further objective was to establish the variability in the CSS produced by individual sibilant phonemes. Thirty young adult subjects had their CSS determined during three separate phonetic tests, using a kinesiograph (Sirognathograph, Siemens A.G., Benshiem, Germany) and a Bio-Pak (BioResearch Associates Inc., Milwaukee, WI) jaw-tracking software program. The first test was a general phonetic articulation test containing all the sounds of the English language and specifically including all six sibilant word sounds. The second phonetic test contained the six sibilant sound making up a short sentence. The third test included six single words, each expressing a different sibilant sound. No statistically significant difference among the mean CSS determined in each of three exercises was demonstrable. A phonetic test containing all sibilant sounds produced a CSS equivalent to that of a test containing all speech sounds. The vertical component of the CSS was also independent of the form or duration of the phonetic tests containing the sibilant word sounds used in this investigation. The CSS determined for 5 of the individual sibilant phonemes in the third exercise differed (p < 0.05) from that calculated for the three complete exercises. Molecular biology is becoming a computationally intense realm of contemporary science and faces some of the current grand scientific challenges. In its context, tools that identify, store, compare and analyze effectively large and growing numbers of bio-sequences are found of increasingly crucial importance. Biosequences are routinely compared or aligned, in a variety of ways, to infer common ancestry, to detect functional equivalence, or simply while searching for similar entries in a database. A considerable body of knowledge has accumulated on sequence alignment during the past few decades. Without pretending to be exhaustive, this paper attempts a survey of some criteria of wide use in sequence alignment and comparison problems, and of the corresponding solutions. The paper is based on presentations and literature given at the Workshop on Sequence Alignment held at Princeton, N.J., in November 1994, as part of the DIMACS Special Year on Mathematical Support for Molecular Biology.  相似文献

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) type VII results from defects in the conversion of type I procollagen to collagen as a consequence of mutations in the substrate that alter the protease cleavage site (EDS type VIIA and VIIB) or in the protease itself (EDS type VIIC). We identified seven additional families in which EDS type VII is either dominantly inherited (one family with EDS type VIIB) or due to new dominant mutations (one family with EDS type VIIA and five families with EDS type VIIB). In six families, the mutations alter the consensus splice junctions, and, in the seventh family, the exon is deleted entirely. The COL1A1 mutation produced the most severe phenotypic effects, whereas those in the COL1A2 gene, regardless of the location or effect, produced congenital hip dislocation and other joint instability that was sometimes very marked. Fractures are seen in some people with EDS type VII, consistent with alterations in mineral deposition on collagen fibrils in bony tissues. These new findings expand the array of mutations known to cause EDS type VII and provide insight into genotype/phenotype relationships in these genes.  相似文献

The mesencephalic interstitial nucleus of Cajal (iC) is considered the neural integrator for vertical and torsional eye movements and has also been proposed to be involved in saccade generation. The aim of this study was to elucidate the function of iC in neural integration of different types of eye movements and to distinguish eye movement deficits due to iC impairment from that of the immediately adjacent rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF). We addressed the following questions: (1) According to the neural integrator hypothesis, all eye movements including the saccadic system and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) share a common neural integrator. Do iC lesions impair gaze-holding function for vertical and torsional eye positions and the torsional and vertical VOR gain to a similar degree? (2) What are the dynamic properties of vertical and torsional eye movements deficits after iC lesions, e.g., the specificity of torsional and vertical nystagmus? (3) Is iC involved in saccade generation? We performed 13 uni- and three bilateral iC inactivations by muscimol microinjections in four alert monkeys. Three-dimensional eye movements were studied under head-stationary conditions during vertical and torsional VOR. Under static conditions, unilateral iC injections evoked a shift of Listing's plane to the contralesional side (up to 20 degrees), which increased (ipsilesional ear down) or decreased (ipsilesional ear up) by additional static vestibular stimulation in the roll plane, i.e., ocular counterroll was preserved. The monkeys showed a spontaneous torsional nystagmus with a profound downbeat component. The fast phases of torsional nystagmus always beat toward the lesion side (ipsilesional). Pronounced gaze-holding deficit for torsional and vertical eye positions (neural integrator failure) was reflected by the reduction of time constants of the exponential decay of the slow phase to 330-370 ms. Whereas the vertical oculomotor range was profoundly decreased (up to 50%) and vertical saccades were reduced in amplitude, saccade velocity remained normal and horizontal eye movements were not affected. Bilateral iC injections reduced the shift of Listing's plane caused by unilateral injections, i.e., back toward the plane of zero torsion. Torsional nystagmus reversed its direction and ceased, whereas vertical nystagmus persisted. In contrast to unilateral injection, there was additional upbeating nystagmus. Time constants of the position integrator of the gaze-holding system did not differ between unilateral and bilateral injections. The range of stable vertical eye positions and saccade amplitude was smaller when compared with unilateral injections, but the main sequence remained normal. Dynamic vestibular stimulation after unilateral iC injections had virtually no effect on torsional and vertical VOR gain and phase at the same time when time constants already indicated severe integrator failure. Torsional VOR elicited a constant slow-phase velocity offset up to 30 degrees toward the contralesional side, i.e., in the opposite direction to spontaneous torsional nystagmus. Likewise, vertical VOR showed a velocity offset in an upward direction, i.e., opposite to the spontaneous downbeat nystagmus. Contralesional torsional and upward vertical quick phases were missing or severely reduced in amplitude but showed normal velocity. In contrast, bilateral iC injections reduced the gain of the torsional and vertical VOR by 50% and caused a phase lead of 10-20 degrees (eye compared with head velocity). We propose that the slow-phase velocity offset during torsional and vertical VOR reflects a vestibular imbalance. It therefore appears likely that the vertical and torsional nystagmus after iC lesions is not only caused by a neural integrator failure but also by a vestibular imbalance.
