This paper presents an overview of the image analysis techniques in the domain of histopathology, specifically, for the objective of automated carcinoma detection and classification. As in other biomedical imaging areas such as radiology, many computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) systems have been implemented to aid histopathologists and clinicians in cancer diagnosis and research, which have been attempted to significantly reduce the labor and subjectivity of traditional manual intervention with histology images. The task of automated histology image analysis is usually not simple due to the unique characteristics of histology imaging, including the variability in image preparation techniques, clinical interpretation protocols, and the complex structures and very large size of the images themselves. In this paper we discuss those characteristics, provide relevant background information about slide preparation and interpretation, and review the application of digital image processing techniques to the field of histology image analysis. In particular, emphasis is given to state-of-the-art image segmentation methods for feature extraction and disease classification. Four major carcinomas of cervix, prostate, breast, and lung are selected to illustrate the functions and capabilities of existing CAD systems.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows high-resolution and noninvasive imaging of the structure of the retina in humans. This technique revolutionized the diagnosis of retinal diseases in routine clinical practice. Nevertheless, quantitative analysis of OCT scans is yet limited to retinal thickness measurements. We propose a novel automated method for the segmentation of eight retinal layers in these images. Our approach is based on global segmentation algorithms, such as active contours and Markov random fields. Moreover, a Kalman filter is designed in order to model the approximate parallelism between the photoreceptor segments and detect them. The performance of the algorithm was tested on a set of retinal images acquired in-vivo from healthy subjects. Results have been compared with manual segmentations performed by five different experts, and intra and inter-physician variability has been evaluated as well. These comparisons have been carried out directly via the computation of the root mean squared error between the segmented interfaces, region-oriented analysis, and retrospectively on the thickness measures derived from the segmentations. This study was performed on a large database including more than seven hundred images acquired from more than one hundred healthy subjects.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is commonly used to investigate the layers of the retina including retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). OCT images are altered by vessels on the retinal surface producing artefacts. We propose a new approach to compensate for these artefacts and enhance quality of OCT images. A total of 28 (20 normal and 8 glaucoma subjects) OCT images were obtained using Spectralis (Heidelberg, Germany). Shadows were detected along the image and compensated by the A-Scan intensity difference from surrounding non-affected areas. Images were then segmented and the area and thickness of RNFL and RPE were measured and compared. 10 subjects were tested twice to determine the effect of this on reproducibility of measurements. Shadow-suppressed images reflected the profile of the retinal layers more closely when assessed qualitatively, minimising distortion. The segmentation of RNFL and RPE thickness demonstrated a mean change of 2.4% ± 1 and 6% ± 1 from the original images. Much larger changes were observed in areas with vessels. Reproducibility of RNFL thickness was improved, specifically in the higher density vessel location, i.e. inferior and superior. Therefore, OCT images can be enhanced by an image processing procedure. Vessel artefacts may cause errors in assessment of RNFL thickness and are a source of variability, which has clinical implications for diseases such as glaucoma where subtle changes in RNFL need to be monitored accurately over time.

Eye-related disease such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a medical ailment in which the retina of the human eye is smashed because of damage to the tiny retinal blood vessels in the retina. Ophthalmologists identify DR based on various features such as the blood vessels, textures and pathologies. With the rapid development of methods of analysis of biomedical images and advanced computing techniques, image processing-based software for the detection of eye disease has been widely used as an important tool by ophthalmologists. In particular, computer vision-based methods are growing rapidly in the field of medical images analysis and are appropriate to advance ophthalmology. These tools depend entirely on visual analysis to identify abnormalities in Retinal Fundus images. During the past two decades, exciting improvement in the development of DR detection computerised systems has been observed. This paper reviews the development of analysing retinal images for the detection of DR in three aspects: automatic algorithms (classification or pixel to pixel methods), detection methods of pathologies from retinal fundus images, and extraction of blood vessels of retinal fundus image algorithms for the detection of DR. The paper presents a detailed explanation of each problem with respect to retinal images. The current techniques that are used to analyse retinal images and DR detection issues are also discussed in detail and recommendations are made for some future directions.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the major ophthalmic pathological cause for loss of eye sight due to changes in blood vessel structure. The retinal blood vessel morphology helps to identify the successive stages of a number of sight threatening diseases and thereby paves a way to classify its severity. This paper presents an automated retinal vessel segmentation technique using neural network, which can be used in computer analysis of retinal images, e.g., in automated screening for diabetic retinopathy. Furthermore, the algorithm proposed in this paper can be used for the analysis of vascular structures of the human retina. Changes in retinal vasculature are one of the main symptoms of diseases like hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Since the size of typical retinal vessel is only a few pixels wide, it is critical to obtain precise measurements of vascular width using automated retinal image analysis. This method segments each image pixel as vessel or nonvessel, which in turn, used for automatic recognition of the vasculature in retinal images. Retinal blood vessels are identified by means of a multilayer perceptron neural network, for which the inputs are derived from the Gabor and moment invariants-based features. Back propagation algorithm, which provides an efficient technique to change the weights in a feed forward network is utilized in our method. The performance of our technique is evaluated and tested on publicly available DRIVE database and we have obtained illustrative vessel segmentation results for those images.

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of blindness in Europe. However, efficient therapies do exist. An accurate and early diagnosis and correct application of treatment can prevent blindness in more than 50% of all cases. Digital imaging is becoming available as a means of screening for diabetic retinopathy. As well as providing a high quality permanent record of the retinal appearance, which can be used for monitoring of progression or response to treatment, and which can be reviewed by an ophthalmologist, digital images have the potential to be processed by automatic analysis systems. We have described the preliminary development of a tool to provide automatic analysis of digital images taken as part of routine monitoring of diabetic retinopathy in our clinic. Various statistical classifiers, a Bayesian, a Mahalanobis, and a KNN classifier were tested. The system was tested on 134 retinal images. The Mahalanobis classifier had the best results: microaneurysms, haemorrhages, exudates, and cotton wool spots were detected with a sensitivity of 69, 83, 99, and 80%, respectively.

Nowadays in the medical field, imaging techniques such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) are mainly used to identify retinal diseases. In this paper, the Central Serous Chorio Retinopathy (CSCR) image is analyzed for various stages and then compares the difference between CSCR before as well as after treatment using different application methods. The first approach, which was focused on image quality, improves medical image accuracy. An enhancement algorithm was implemented to improve the OCT image contrast and denoise purpose called Boosted Anisotropic Diffusion with an Unsharp Masking Filter (BADWUMF). The classifier used here is to figure out whether the OCT image is a CSCR case or not. 150 images are checked for this research work (75 abnormal from Optical Coherence Tomography Image Retinal Database, in-house clinical database, and 75 normal images). This article explicitly decides that the approaches suggested aid the ophthalmologist with the precise retinal analysis and hence the risk factors to be minimized. The total precision is 90 percent obtained from the Two Class Support Vector Machine (TCSVM) classifier and 93.3 percent is obtained from Shallow Neural Network with the Powell-Beale (SNNWPB) classifier using the MATLAB 2019a program.

The aim of this paper is to describe three emerging computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems induced by Japanese health care needs. CAD has been developing fast in the last two decades. The idea of using a computer to help in medical image diagnosis is not new. Some pioneer studies are dated back to the 1960s. In 1998, the first U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved commercial CAD system, a film-digitized mammography system, was launched by R2 Technologies, Inc. The success was quickly repeated by a number of companies. The approval of Medicare CAD reimbursement in the U.S. in 2001 further boosted the industry. Today, CAD has its significance in the economy of the medical industry. FDA approved CAD products in the field of breast imaging (mammography, ultrasonography and breast MRI) and chest imaging (radiography and CT) can be seen. In Japan, as part of the "Knowledge Cluster Initiative" of the government, three computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) projects are hosted at the Gifu University since 2004. These projects are regarding the development of CAD systems for the early detection of (1) cerebrovascular diseases using brain MRI and MRA images by detecting lacunar infarcts, unruptured aneurysms, and arterial occlusions; (2) ocular diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and hypertensive retinopathy using retinal fundus images; and (3) breast cancers using ultrasound 3-D volumetric whole breast data by detecting the breast masses. The projects are entering their final development stage. Preliminary results are presented in this paper. Clinical examinations will be started soon, and commercialized CAD systems for the above subjects will appear by the completion of this project.

This paper presents the retina-based disease diagnosis through deep learning-based feature extraction method. This process helps in developing automated screening system, which is capable of diagnosing retina for diseases such as age-related molecular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular bunker, retinoblastoma, retinal detachment, and retinitis pigmentosa. Some of these diseases share a common characteristic, which makes the classification difficult. In order to overcome the above-mentioned problem, deep learning feature extraction and a multi-class SVM classifier are used. The main contribution of this work is the reducing the dimension of the features required to classify the retinal disease, which enhances the process of reducing the system requirement as well as good performance.

The change in morphology, diameter, branching pattern or tortuosity of retinal blood vessels is an important indicator of various clinical disorders of the eye and the body. This paper reports an automated method for segmentation of blood vessels in retinal images. A unique combination of techniques for vessel centerlines detection and morphological bit plane slicing is presented to extract the blood vessel tree from the retinal images. The centerlines are extracted by using the first order derivative of a Gaussian filter in four orientations and then evaluation of derivative signs and average derivative values is performed. Mathematical morphology has emerged as a proficient technique for quantifying the blood vessels in the retina. The shape and orientation map of blood vessels is obtained by applying a multidirectional morphological top-hat operator with a linear structuring element followed by bit plane slicing of the vessel enhanced grayscale image. The centerlines are combined with these maps to obtain the segmented vessel tree. The methodology is tested on three publicly available databases DRIVE, STARE and MESSIDOR. The results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed algorithm is comparable with state of the art techniques in terms of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity.

Computer-aided detection/diagnosis (CAD) systems can enhance the diagnostic capabilities of physicians and reduce the time required for accurate diagnosis. The objective of this paper is to review the recent published segmentation and classification techniques and their state-of-the-art for the human brain magnetic resonance images (MRI). The review reveals the CAD systems of human brain MRI images are still an open problem. In the light of this review we proposed a hybrid intelligent machine learning technique for computer-aided detection system for automatic detection of brain tumor through magnetic resonance images. The proposed technique is based on the following computational methods; the feedback pulse-coupled neural network for image segmentation, the discrete wavelet transform for features extraction, the principal component analysis for reducing the dimensionality of the wavelet coefficients, and the feed forward back-propagation neural network to classify inputs into normal or abnormal. The experiments were carried out on 101 images consisting of 14 normal and 87 abnormal (malignant and benign tumors) from a real human brain MRI dataset. The classification accuracy on both training and test images is 99% which was significantly good. Moreover, the proposed technique demonstrates its effectiveness compared with the other machine learning recently published techniques. The results revealed that the proposed hybrid approach is accurate and fast and robust. Finally, possible future directions are suggested.

This paper presents a new approach to the computer aided diagnosis (CAD) of diabetic retinopathy (DR)—a common and severe complication of long-term diabetes which damages the retina and cause blindness. Since microaneurysms are regarded as the first signs of DR, there has been extensive research on effective detection and localization of these abnormalities in retinal images. In contrast to existing algorithms, a new approach based on multi-scale correlation filtering (MSCF) and dynamic thresholding is developed. This consists of two levels, microaneurysm candidate detection (coarse level) and true microaneurysm classification (fine level). The approach was evaluated based on two public datasets—ROC (retinopathy on-line challenge, http://roc.healthcare.uiowa.edu) and DIARETDB1 (standard diabetic retinopathy database, http://www.it.lut.fi/project/imageret/diaretdb1). We conclude our method to be effective and efficient.

Vision decreasing and blindness are great threats to health, which can be caused by various kinds of macular diseases. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is widely used in the diagnosis of macular disease. Ophthalmologists often need to check and analyse lots of OCT images and then give eye disease report for each image, which is time-consuming and inefficient. Thus, the automated classification method is necessary. In this paper, we proposed an approach to determine the status (normal or abnormal) of retina by OCT images. The proposed method can differentiate several kinds of macular diseases from normal image, including macular edema, macular hole and age-related macular degeneration. Besides the geometry features, our method takes advantage of two texture feature (local binary pattern histograms and histogram of oriented gradient) to improve the accuracy rate. The experimental results on a public available dataset demonstrate that our approach is effective and achieve higher accuracy (all accuracy >0.98, AUC can reach 1).

The quest for completely automated process planning systems has exposed the lack of techniques capable of automatically understanding the stored CAD models in a manner suitable for process planning. Most current generations of process planning systems have used the ability of humans to translate the part drawing requirements into a form suitable for computer aided process planing. Recently, research advances have been made to improve the understanding of computer stored 3-D part models. The two approaches used are feature recognition and feature based design. This paper presents a state of the art review of feature recognition techniques developed and presents feature based design as an alternative. Process planning systems developed using both approaches are presented.

Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer diagnosed in women. For years human limitations in interpreting the thermograms possessed a considerable challenge, but with the introduction of computer assisted detection/diagnosis (CAD), this problem has been addressed. This review paper compares different approaches based on neural networks and fuzzy systems which have been implemented in different CAD designs. The greatest improvement in CAD systems was achieved with a combination of fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks in the form of FALCON-AART complementary learning fuzzy neural network (CLFNN). With a CAD design based on FALCON-AART, it was possible to achieve an overall accuracy of near 90%. This confirms that CAD systems are indeed a valuable addition to the efforts for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Lower cost and high performance of new infrared systems combined with accurate CAD designs can promote the use of thermography in many breast cancer centres worldwide.

Artificial intelligence and deep learning have aided ocular disease through experiments including automatic illness recognition from images of the iris, fundus, or retina. Automated diagnosis systems (ADSs) provide services for the benefit of humanity and are essential in the early detection of harmful diseases. In fact, early detection is essential to avoid total blindness. In real life, several diagnostic tests such as visual ocular tonometry, retinal exam, and acuity test are performed, but they are conclusively time demanding and stressful for the patient. To consume time and detect the retinal disease earlier, an efficient prediction method is designed. In this proposed model, the first process is data collection that consists of a retinal disease dataset for testing and training. The second process is pre-processing, which executes image resizing and noise filter for feature extraction. The third step is feature extraction, which extracts the image's form, size, color, and texture for classification with CNN based on Inception-ResNet V2. The classification process is done by using the SVM with the extracted features. The prediction of diseases is classified such as normal, cataract, glaucoma, and retinal disease. The suggested model's performance is assessed using performance indicators such as accuracy, error, sensitivity, precision, and so forth. The suggested model's accuracy, error, sensitivity, and precision are 0.96, 0.962, 0.964, and 0.04, respectively, higher than existing techniques such as VGG16, Mobilenet V1, ResNet, and AlexNet. Thus, the proposed model instantly predicts retinal disease.

With advancements in machine learning algorithms and computer aided diagnostic (CAD) systems, the performance of automated analysis of radiological images has improved substantially in recent times. However, the lack of integration between the radiologist and CAD systems restrains the rate of progress as well as the reach of such advancements in clinical use. This article aims to improve the clinical efficiency of ultrasound based CAD systems for classification of breast lesions by integrating back-propagation artificial neural network (BPANN), support vector machine (SVM) and radiologist feedback. The acquired breast ultrasound images were subjected to wavelet based filtering in order to reduce speckle noise followed by feature extraction, feature selection and classification. Experiments on a database of 178 ultrasound images of breast anomalies (88 benign and 90 malignant) show that the proposed methodology achieves classification accuracy of 98.621% and 98.276%, respectively, when all 457 and 19 most relevant features selected by multi-criteria feature selection method were used for classification. The accuracy achieved is significantly higher than that using conventional classifiers based on BPANN and SVM. Further, it is found that integrating expert opinion in CAD systems improves its overall performance. The quantitative results obtained are discussed in light of some recently reported studies.
