The history of psychology at St. Thomas University can be viewed in two distinct phases which co-incide with the period from its foundation in 1910 until 1964 when it moved to a new campus in Fredericton. The first phase saw psychology as a branch of philosophy. The second phase, commencing in 1965 has manifested rapid development of the psychology department which seems to indicate the continued interest in psychology by students of the small liberal arts school in Canada. This article discusses the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) Archives of the history of psychology in Brazil. The Archives were originally established in 1997, in the Helena Antipoff Room at the Central Library of the UFMG. The team responsible for today’s archive operations has grown to include psychology and education archival specialists, as well as personnel trained in conservation and restoration techniques and consultants who provide advice on the organization of the material. As psychology in Brazil is profoundly related to the history of education, above all to the history of educational thinking and the systems of teaching, the collections also constitute material of interest to education historians. Thus, in institutional terms, the UFMG Archives of the History of Psychology in Brazil are connected both to the postgraduate programs in psychology, “History of Psychology and Sociocultural Context,” and education, “Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Education,” at the UFMG. Founded in 1974 under the auspices of the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association, the Association for the Advancement of Psychology (AAP) is a nonprofit corporation that interacts with all branches of the federal government in the interest of psychology and the public. AAP's public policy activities in Congress and the federal agencies in 1980 continued to focus on the elimination of discrimination with regard to the treatment of mental illness and to mental health professionals; opportunities for funding in research and training; the protection of constitutional rights without exception; and fairness in government regulations. The cumulative effect of the advocacy effort, the constant monitoring of annual congressional appropriations and authorization processes, and the greater sophistication of AAP's interaction with the American Psychological Association resulted in significant gains for mental health in federal health programs. The AAP convention program featured a panel of psychologists who entered into a lively debate on the role of AAP and its interaction with state psychological associations. Martin T. Orne, the 1986 recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology, was presented with a check for $2,000 and an engrossed citation of his contribution. Orne receives this award "for his efforts to integrate psychological theory and methods with the pragmatic concerns of psychotherapy, medicine, and law. Through his research he has helped practitioners to realize the potential benefits and limitations of hypnosis, lie detection, sleep, and biofeedback, and the roles played by specific and nonspecific factors in psychotherapy and behavioral medicine. His analysis of the social context of the experiment has elucidated the importance of demand characteristics in shaping experience and behavior, and helped alter the way in which both experimentalists and clinicians evaluate the reactions of subjects, clients, and patients. Psychologist, physician, scientist, clinician, editor, and expert witness, no one better exemplifies the theoretical and practical advantages of transcending disciplinary boundaries in the pursuit of our common goals."
