Damage progress in toughened-type carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) cross-ply laminates under tensile fatigue loading was measured using the replica technique. The laminate configuration was [0/90m/0], where m = 4, 8 and 12. The damage parameters, transverse crack density and delamination ratio, were determined. A power-law model was proposed, relating the cyclic strain range and the number of cycles at transverse crack initiation. Based on experimental data, a simple shear-lag analysis combined with the modified Paris law was conducted to model the transverse crack multiplication. An extension of the shearlag analysis for laminates containing delaminations initiating from the tips of the transverse cracks was used to conduct a modified Paris law analysis for delamination growth.  相似文献

Modelling of fatigue damage progression and life of CFRP laminates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A progressive fatigue damage model has been developed for predicting damage accumulation and life of carbon fibre‐reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates with arbitrary geometry and stacking sequence subjected to constant amplitude cyclic loading. The model comprises the components of stress analysis, fatigue failure analysis and fatigue material property degradation. Stress analysis of the composite laminate was performed by creating a three‐dimensional finite element model in the ANSYS FE code. Fatigue failure analysis was performed by using a set of Hashin‐type failure criteria and the Ye‐delamination criterion. Two types of material property degradations on the basis of element stiffness and strength were applied: a sudden degradation because of sudden failure detected by the fatigue failure criteria and a gradual degradation because of the nature of cyclic loading, which is driven by the increased number of cycles. The gradual degradation of the composite material was modelled by using functions relating the residual stiffness and residual strength of the laminate to the number of cycles. All model components have been programmed in the ANSYS FE code in order to create a user‐friendly macro‐routine. The model has been applied in two different quasi‐isotropic CFRP laminates subjected to tension–compression (T–C) fatigue and the predictions of fatigue life and damage accumulation as a function of the number of cycles were compared with experimental data available in the literature. Compression fatigue failure of CFRP laminates with impact damage   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The objective of this study is to investigate failure mechanisms of impact-damaged CFRP laminates subjected to compression fatigue. Two kinds of composite materials, UT500/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK, were used to examine the dependence of failure behavior on the material properties such as interlaminar toughness. Impact-induced delaminations in the UT500/Epoxy specimen were considerably larger than those in the AS4/PEEK specimen. The SN curves for the UT500/Epoxy specimens with impact damage exhibited a similar tendency to those without impact. The impact-induced delamination in the UT500/Epoxy specimen grew widthwise to the free edge on the rear side of the specimen during the fatigue test. On the other hand, the AS4/PEEK specimens without impact exhibited a more steeply declining SN curve than those with impact damage. The delaminations in the impacted AS4/PEEK specimen did not reach the free edge before the fatigue fracture.  相似文献

In order to improve the interlaminar mechanical properties of CFRP laminates, hybrid CFRP/VGCF laminates have been fabricated by using a newly-developed method, i.e., powder method, where the powder of vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) is added at the mid-plane of [0°/0°]14 CFRP laminates. Experimental results of double cantilever beam (DCB) tests indicate the improvement on the interlaminar mechanical properties of Mode-I fracture behavior with much higher critical load PC and fracture toughness GIC with VGCF interlayer. Crack propagation and fracture surface have also been observed to interpret this improvement mechanism. Moreover, based on experimental GIC, numerical simulations using finite element method (FEM) with cohesive elements have been carried out to analyze the delamination propagation. The interlaminar tensile strength of hybrid CFRP/VGCF laminates, which is obtained by matching the numerical load–COD (crack opening displacement) curves to experimental ones, is higher than that of base CFRP laminates.  相似文献

Tensile and compressive static and fatigue tests were carried out on two CFRP lay-ups; [(90 ± 30)3]s and [02 + 452 902 − 452]s, both as-received and after exposure to a hot/wet environment for varying times. The rates of moisture absorption of fatigue damaged and undamaged coupons were compared. Static strengths were also measured at 100°C. Damage development was monitored by optical microscopy and ultrasonic C-scan. Despite the laminates having essentially resin dominated behaviour, environmental exposure had little effect on the strengths and fatigue lives compared with the as-received material. There were, however, significant differences in the damage developed during fatigue. Full details of the effect of moisture on the mechanical properties and failure processes are discussed.  相似文献

A modified self-piercing rivet (SPR) has been proposed to mechanically fasten CFRP laminates. The modified SPR consists of a rivet body and two flat washers. The two flat washers were used to suppress delamination in the CFRP laminates at the point of piercing. The advantages of the modified SPR for fastening CFRP laminates are instantaneous process time and low cost. Any pretreatments such as surface treatments or hole drilling are not required. In this study, the viability of the modified SPR for a quasi-isotropic CFRP laminate was investigated by tensile and fatigue tests on the single lap joints. The experimental results showed that the tensile strength of a modified SPR joint was slightly higher than a bolted joint. In tension–tension fatigue tests, a fatigue limit at Nf = 107 cycles was about 50% of the tensile joint strength. Experimental results showed that the modified SPR was one of the promising fasteners for future mass-production CFRP automobiles.  相似文献

通过类比方式,以电阻变化作为复合材料的损伤参数,建立了用电阻损伤参数预报CFRP层板疲劳损伤的数学模型,通过拉-拉疲劳试验,对CFRP层板的疲劳损伤与疲劳寿命预报进行研究,建立了累积损伤中电阻与疲劳损伤状态之间的关系.研究表明,在疲劳损伤过程中,电阻损伤参数的变化同材料的疲劳损伤过程密切相关,电阻损伤规律可分为下降阶段、平稳阶段和破坏阶段;碳纤维材料的电阻变化能够反映纤维的损伤程度和破坏形式,可以作为表征复合材料纤维损伤的有效参数.  相似文献

This paper presents a delayed-fracture model for transverse cracking in CFRP cross-ply laminates under static fatigue loading. First, a delayed-fracture model for a crack in a brittle material was established on the basis of the slow crack growth (SCG) concept in conjunction with a probabilistic fracture model using the three-parameter Weibull distribution. Second, the above probabilistic SCG model was applied to transverse cracking in cross-ply laminates under static fatigue loading. The stress and the length of the unit element in the transverse layers were calculated with the aid of a shear-lag analysis, taking the residual stress into account. The transverse crack density was expressed as a function of applied stress and time with the parameters in the Paris law and the Weibull distribution function specified, in addition to the mechanical and geometrical properties. Unknown parameters were determined from experiment data gathered in static tensile and static fatigue tests. The reproduced transverse crack density at various applied loads agreed well with the experiment results.  相似文献

In this study, the damage evolution behavior was evaluated considering the effect of the textile structure and water absorption. Damage observation was conducted by the integration of non-destructive and direct observation methods. Candidate textile reinforcements were T300-3k plain woven fabric (PW) and T700S-12k multi-axial knitted fabric (MA). The effect of water absorption on the performances of compression after impact (CAI) and PIF were small in PW CFRP laminates. Conversely, PIF properties of water-absorbed MA CFRP laminates drastically decreased than that of dry ones. CAI strength was not affected by water absorption. PIF performance of dry MA CFRP was fairly higher than that of the others. From the precise observation, some evidences of interfacial deterioration caused by water absorption were confirmed in both PW and MA CFRP laminates.  相似文献

Thermal fatigue tests were conducted on high temperature resistant carbon fiber reinforced plastics cross-ply laminates to evaluate microscopic damage progress which affects macroscopic mechanical behavior of the laminates. Materials system used were thermoplastic polyetheretherketone based, AS4/PEEK and thermoset bismaleimide based, G40-800/5260. Several types of laminate configuration were used to clarify the effect of ply thickness on microscopic damage progress. Microscopic damages were observed using optical microscopy and soft X-ray radiography. Energy release rate associated with transverse cracking was calculated using variational analysis. The modified Paris law was used to predict transverse cracking. From comparison to mechanical fatigue test results, it is clarified that transverse crack accumulation rate was larger under thermal fatigue loading at same energy release rate range due to the dependence of the fracture toughness on temperature.  相似文献

The electro-mechanical response (Electrical Resistance Change method) as a damage index of quasi-isotropic Carbon Fiber Reinforced (CFRPs) laminates under fatigue loading was investigated. The effect of dispersed Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) into the epoxy matrix was additionally evaluated and compared with neat epoxy CFRPs. The longitudinal resistance change of the specimens was monitored throughout the fatigue experiment. Three different stress levels were tested. The frequency and the ratio (R) of the minimum applied load (stress) to the maximum applied load (stress) were kept constant for the different stress levels. The temperature of the specimen was also monitored throughout the process in order to deduce its effect on the electrical resistance of the specimen. The electrical behavior of the quasi-isotropic CFRP deviated from the commonly observed electrical response of unidirectional or cross-ply CFRPs due to the presence of the 45° layers. During initial stages of loading the resistance drops and afterwards it follows a positive slope up to final fracture. This repeatable pattern was observed for both the neat and the CNT-doped specimens, with the latter having smoother electrical recordings. The effect of temperature was calculated to be limited for the specific material and test/measurement configuration. The electro-mechanical response was correlated to stiffness degradation and acoustic emission findings enabling the identification of the specific regions during the fatigue life referring to specific mechanisms of damage accumulation. More specifically the experimental results revealed that the occurrence of the initial drop of the electrical resistance is linked with the occurrence of the Characteristic Damage State (CDS), associated with a specific percentage of stiffness reduction. This finding was used in order to predict the remaining life independently from the applied stress level with a high degree of confidence, assuming a constant stress level throughout the whole lifetime. Fatigue tests at room temperature and thermal cycling experiments have been performed on carbon/epoxy laminates of cross-ply and complex stacking sequences. An ‘equivalent’ fatigue loading level has been evaluated in order to impose on the 90° plies the same amplitude of transverse stress σ22 than in thermal cycling. A comparison of the matrix crack development throughout both types of tests has been undertaken: they have been found analogous, but with very far much faster kinetics under thermal cycling. Moreover, the fatigue test frequency has a significant influence on crack onset and development. However, it seems that the parameters ‘time’ and ‘transverse ply stress amplitude’ are not sufficient to completely explain the very fast cracking kinetics observed under thermal cycling.  相似文献

为了研究孔隙率对织物碳纤维/环氧树脂复合材料层合板静态力学性能的影响规律,分别测量了孔隙率为0.33%至1.50%的CFRP层合板的弯曲强度和层间剪切强度,并进行有限元模拟.在适用于复合材料单向板的改进Hashin失效准则基础上,建立了适用于织物纤维增强复合材料静态力学强度的失效准则.通过引入复合材料基本强度参数预测不同孔隙率CFRP层合板的力学性能,结合刚度突然退化模型,采用ABAQUS软件建立了有限元模型.试验结果表明,随着孔隙率的增加,复合材料层合板的弯曲强度和层间剪切强度均呈下降趋势.有限元模型较为准确地预测了不同孔隙率织物碳纤维/环氧树脂复合材料层合板的弯曲强度和层间剪切强度.  相似文献

A tension fatigue life prediction methodology for composite laminates is presented. Tension fatigue tests were conducted on quasi-isotropic and orthotropic glass epoxy, graphite epoxy, and glass/graphite epoxy hybrid laminates. Edge delamination onset data were used to generate plots of strain energy release rate as a function of cycles to delamination onset. These plots were then used along with strain energy release rate analyses of delaminations initiating at matrix cracks to predict local delamination onset. Stiffness loss was measured experimentally to account for the accumulation of matrix cracks and for delimination growth. Fatigue failure was predicted by comparing the increase in global strain resulting from stiffness loss to the decrease in laminate failure strain resulting from delaminations forming at matrix cracks through the laminate thickness. Good agreement between measured and predicted lives indicated that the through-thickness damage accumulation model can accurately describe fatigue failure for laminates where the delamination onset behaviour in fatigue is well characterized, and stiffness loss can be monitored in real time to account for damage growth.  相似文献

The present study examines the tensile behaviour of composite structures repaired by bonding external patches. Various patches of different stacking sequences placed on both sides of the parent plate were considered. Damage development and the failure process of the repaired plates were analyzed and a parent plate fracture model has been proposed. Optimised patch repairs were calculated by finite element modelling. It was found that high stress concentration along the longitudinal edges of circular patches and/or at the transverse edges of the hole leads to early damage initiation in the parent plate. However, the position of damage initiation and the process of damage progression depend particularly on the properties of repair patches. In order to optimise patch repairs, finite element modelling was used and it was founded possible to attain over 90% of the strength of an unnotched specimen. The optimised patch design can be characterised by an optimal strength ratio R*, which should be minimized when selecting repair parameters.  相似文献

The high-cycle fatigue characteristics focused on the behavior of the transverse crack growth up to 108 cycles were investigated using quasi-isotropic carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates whose stacking sequence was [−45/0/45/90]s. To assess the fatigue behavior in the high-cycle region, fatigue tests were conducted at a frequency of 100 Hz in addition to 5 Hz. In this study, to evaluate quantitative characteristics of the transverse crack growth in the high-cycle region, the energy release rate considering the free-edge effect was calculated. Transverse crack growth behavior was evaluated based on a modified Paris law approach. The results revealed that transverse crack growth was delayed under the test conditions of the applied stress level of σmax/σb = 0.2.  相似文献

The initiation and propagation of damage in carbon fibre composites subjected to impact loading has been investigated. High velocity impact tests were conducted on a variety of stacking configurations using a nitrogen operated gas gun. The damage processes were characterised using X-radiography, ultrasonic C-scanning, optical microscopy and the deply technique. The merits and weaknesses of applying such damage detection techniques to the monitoring of impact damage in composites are discussed. The consequence of the various fracture mechanisms on residual tensile strength is also considered.  相似文献

Dynamic compressive strength of quasi-isotropic fiber composite is investigated experimentally and also numerically simulated. In-plane compression tests at strain rates around 400/s quasi-isotropic laminates were performed using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). The material system used was Texipreg® HS160 REM, comprising high strength unidirectional carbon fiber and epoxy resin. The dynamic strength of quasi-isotropic laminates exhibits a considerable increase when compared to the static values. The finite-element model used ABAQUS™ three-dimensional solid elements C3D8I with 8 nodes and user-defined interface finite elements with 8 nodes [Gonçalves JPM, de Moura MFSF, de Castro PMST, Marques AT. Interface element including point-to-surface constraints for three-dimensional problems with damage propagation. These interface elements which connect the three-dimensional solid elements modeling the composite layers, include a cohesive damage model allowing the simulation of delamination initiation and propagation. Hence the present model assumes that the phenomenon of failure under these conditions is mainly dictated by interface delamination. This is supported by experimental tests which showed that all quasi-isotropic laminates split into several almost intact sublaminates. The model compares very well with experimental results, confirming the formulated hypothesis that the internal layer damage does not markedly contribute to the quasi-isotropic laminate failure.  相似文献
