Writers on construction management have begun showing an interest in Aristotle's views on ethics, leadership, metaphysics and change, although overlooking that he frequently resorted to construction metaphors. This investigation shows that 16 of his writings contain about 140 construction metaphors and about 370 occurrences of construction terms. Metaphysics, Nicomachean Ethics and Physics provide more than half of these metaphors. For Aristotle, the process of house building is both knowledge driven and purpose driven: the building is to be a shelter against the elements, and the builder has to consider this ultimate goal for every step of production when choosing tools and materials. Builders learn the art of building by building; when they enjoy their work, they will go on improving. Building users can judge whether a building is good or bad, not builders. That Aristotle's metaphysics are object oriented and that practical wisdom is prominent in his ethics appear as irrelevant to construction, which was the typical example of managed production in his time. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to carry out a mixed methods construction education study seeking to improve student learning. This study uses project-based learning (PrBL) and milestone deliverable pedagogy to teach a concrete industry project management course and compares the outcome to a control (non-PrBL) version of the same course. The intervention course was designed as a full semester learning experience for students. The students worked as project managers from start to finish constantly contributing to the completion of their team project. In the control scenario, delivered in Fall 2013, students were required to carry-out a traditional project due at the end of the semester. This study examines the impact of having the course project become the main learning mechanism and considers and measures the ways in which PrBL affects student performance. Pre and post questionnaires regarding self-perceptions of learning and skill development were administered and project and course grades were used to assess the impact of PrBL on the students’ performance. The questionnaires revealed a minimum increase of students’ perception of their understanding of 48%. The course grade comparison showed an average of 13% point increase in all student grades when the PrBL pedagogy was implemented. 相似文献

Airport construction planners often face the problem of identifying optimal locations for temporary construction facilities on site, as the planned locations of these facilities usually influence important and conflicting planning objectives such as improving the efficiency of construction operations and maintaining safety on site. Careful evaluation of all feasible locations for temporary facilities and the selection of an optimal layout are needed in order to achieve these multiple important objectives. This paper presents the development of a practical automated system to optimize multiple conflicting planning objectives and provide all possible optimal tradeoff solutions among these objectives. The system is implemented and integrated in four main modules: (1) a comprehensive multi-objective optimization engine that integrates and optimizes construction work zone safety, construction-related aviation safety, construction-related airport security, and all relevant site layout costs; (2) a relational database that integrates planning data and stores all the generated optimal solutions; (3) an Input/Output module to facilitate specifying planning and optimization parameters and retrieving the generated optimal site layout solutions; and (4) a visualization module that communicates with external CAD software in order to support the visualization of the generated optimal site layout plans. 相似文献

As zero-accidents cultures expand in popularity, knowledge and implementation of safety regulations have become priorities for construction organizations. An expanded literature review revealed that many industry leaders have responded by increasing the frequency and content of health and safety training programmes; however the provision of training largely has remained consistent. Identifying workers’ conceptions of the training they receive is critical to the design and deployment of effective workplace education programmes. Utilizing a hybrid questionnaire of qualitative and quantitative components to assess perceptions and knowledge, data were collected from a sample (n = 121) representing construction professionals across the United States who had completed an OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Training Course. The data described a workforce dissatisfied with training effectiveness and characterized a widespread situation in which the distinguishing characteristics of adult learning had not been addressed by qualified trainers. Strong health and safety training programmes improve employee retention as well as compliance with health and safety requirements. Trainees are more likely to respond positively to training programmes when adult learning theories are integrated into safety trainer readiness programmes. 相似文献

In recent years, a number of advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions have been developed to assist in the management of business processes and working environments. Mobile computing and wireless communication are two such technologies which have been adapted for use in hybrid systems that can monitor and manage industrial health, safety and welfare activities. Within the construction sector, plant and equipment operation has been shown to be one of the leading causes of accidents and injuries, not least because the sector has witnessed an exponential reliance upon mechanical resources. In an attempt to reduce vehicle accidents, this work reports upon a conceptual model that utilises advanced ICT solutions to produce an innovative and proactive health and safety management system entitled SightSafety. Using a combination of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), smart sensors and wireless networks, SightSafety can track operatives and plant, notify management and employees of pending danger and ultimately contribute to reducing accident rates. The system also provides reports on dangerous occurrences that have happened, thereby enabling managers to learn from any experiences acquired, or mistakes made, during the construction of a project. 相似文献
