The Polylactide (PLA)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) blends with four different weight ratios were prepared by melt mixing. PLA and PHBV in PLA/PHBV blends were immiscible while the weak interaction between PLA and PHBV existed. The PHBV domains below 2 μm were dispersed in PLA matrix uniformly. The addition of PHBV made the crystallization of PLA easier due to PHBV acting as nucleating agent. PLA spherulites in PLA/PHBV blends presented various banded structures. In addition, the crystallinity of neat PLA was lower than those of PLA/PHBV blends. With the increase of PHBV content in PLA/PHBV blends, the crystallinity of PLA/PHBV blends increased. PHBV could enhance significantly the toughness of PLA. However, with the increase of PHBV content, the yield stress (σy), tensile modulus (E), and the yield strain (εy) of PLA/PHBV blends decreased gradually. Poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and poly(3‐hydrobutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) were blended with poly(butadiene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (NBR). Both PLLA/NBR and PHBV/NBR blends exhibited higher tensile properties as the content of acrylonitrile unit (AN) of NBR increased from 22 to 50 wt %. However, two separate glass transition temperatures (Tg) appeared in PLLA/NBR blends irrespective of the content of NBR, revealing that PLLA was incompatible with NBR. In contrast, a single Tg, which shifted along with the blend composition, was observed for PHBV/NBR50 blends. Moreover NBR50 suppressed the crystallization of PHBV, indicating that PHBV was compatible with NBR50. Decrease of both elongation modulus and stress at maximum load was less significant and increase of elongation at break was more pronounced in PHBV/NBR50 blends than in PLLA/NBR50 blends. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of poly(3‐hydroxy butyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxy valerate) (PHBV) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were prepared by casting from chloroform solutions. Crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of blends have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarizing microscopy. Experimental results reveal that the constituents are miscible in the amorphous state. They form separated crystal structures in the solid state. Crystallization behavior of the blends was studied under isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. Owing to the large difference in melting temperatures, the constituents crystallize consecutively in blends; however, the process is affected by the respective second component. PHBV crystallizes from the amorphous mixture of the constituents, at temperatures where the PEO remains in the molten state. PEO, on the other hand, is surrounded during its crystallization process by crystalline PHBV regions. The degree of crystallinity in the blends stays constant for PHBV and decreases slightly for PEO, with ascending PHBV content. The rate of crystallization of PHBV decreases in blends as compared to the neat polymer. The opposite behavior is observed for PEO. Nonisothermal crystallization is discussed in terms of a quasi‐isothermal approach. Qualitatively, the results show the same tendencies as under isothermal conditions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization kinetics and spherulitic morphology of six‐armed poly(L‐lactic acid) (6a‐PLLA)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co?3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) crystalline/crystalline partially miscible blends were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy in this study. Avrami analysis was used to describe the isothermal crystallization process of the neat polymers and their blends. The results suggest that blending had a complex influence on the crystallization rate of the two components during the isothermal crystallization process. Also, the crystallization mechanism of these blends was different from that of the neat polymers. The melting behavior of these blends was also studied after crystallization at various crystallization temperatures. The crystallization of PHBV at 125°C was difficult, so no melting peaks were found. However, it was interesting to find a weak melting peak, which arose from the PHBV component for the 20/80 6a‐PLLA/PHBV blend after crystallization at 125°C, and it is discussed in detail. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Miscibility and crystallization of biodegradable poly (3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx)/poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh) blends were investigated in this work. PHBHHx is miscible with PVPh over the whole composition range as evidenced by the single composition dependent glass transition temperature and the depression of equilibrium melting point of PHBHHx in the blends. The overall crystallization rates decrease with increasing crystallization temperature for both neat PHBHHx and its blends with PVPh; moreover, the overall crystallization rates are slower in the PHBHHx/PVPh blends than in neat PHBHHx at the same crystallization temperature. Blending with PVPh may change the crystallization mechanism of PHBHHx in the blends compared with that of neat PHBHHx. Both neat PHBHHx and the PHBHHx/PVPh blends exhibit a crystallization regime II to III transition. The crystal structure of PHBHHx is not modified in the PHBHHx/PVPh blends; however, the values of crystal layer thickness, amorphous layer thickness, and long period all become larger with increasing PVPh content in the blends. Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was irradiated by 60Co γ‐rays (doses of 50, 100 and 200 kGy) under vacuum. The thermal analysis of control and irradiated PHBV, under vacuum was carried out by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tensile properties of control and irradiated PHBV were examined by using an Instron tensile testing machine. In the thermal degradation of control and irradiated PHBV, a one‐step weight loss was observed. The derivative thermogravimetric curves of control and irradiated PHBV confirmed only one weight‐loss step change. The onset degradation temperature (To) and the temperature of maximum weight‐loss rate (Tp) of control and irradiated PHBV were in line with the heating rate (°C min?1). To and TP of PHBV decreased with increasing radiation dose at the same heating rate. The DSC results showed that 60Co γ‐radiation significantly affected the thermal properties of PHBV. With increasing radiation dose, the melting temperature (Tm) of PHBV shifted to a lower value, due to the decrease in crystal size. The tensile strength and fracture strain of the irradiated PHBV decreased, hence indicating an increased brittleness. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Biodegradable polymer blends prepared by blending poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and corn starch do not form intact films due to their incompatibility and brittle behavior. For improving their compatibility and flexibility, poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was grafted from the corn starch to prepare the PVAc‐modified corn starch (CSV). The resulting CSV consisted of 47.2 wt% starch‐g‐PVAc copolymer and 52.8 wt% PVAc homopolymer and its structure was verified by FT‐IR analysis. In comparison with 35°C of the neat PVAc, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the grafted PVAc chains on starch‐g‐PVAc was higher at 44°C because of the hindered molecular mobility imposed from starch on the grafted PVAc. After blending PHB with the CSV, structure and thermal properties of the blends were investigated. Only a single Tg was found for all the PHB/CSV blends and increased with increasing the CSV content. The Tg‐composition dependence of the PHB/CSV blends was well‐fitted with the Gordon‐Taylor equation, indicating that the CSV was compatible with the PHB. In addition, the presence of the CSV could raise the thermal stability of the PHB component. It was also found that the presence of the PHB and PVAc components would not hinder the enzymatic degradation of the corn starch by α‐amylase. POLYM. ENG. Different hydroxyl content poly(styrene‐cop‐(hexafluoro‐2‐hydroxylisopropyl)‐α‐methylstyene) [PS(OH)‐X] copolymers were synthesized and blends with 2,2,6,6‐tetramrthyl‐piperdine‐1‐oxyl end spin‐labeled PEO [SLPEO] were prepared. The miscibility behavior of all the blends was predicted by comparing the critical miscible polymer–polymer interaction parameter (χcrit) with the polymer–polymer interaction parameter (χ). The micro heterogeneity, chain motion, and hydrogen bonding interaction of the blends were investigated by the ESR spin label method. Two spectral components with different rates of motion were observed in the ESR composite spectra of all the blends, indicating the existence of microheterogeneity at the molecular level. According to the variations of ESR spectral parameters Ta, Td, ΔT, T50G and τc, with the increasing hydroxyl content in blends, it was shown that the extent of miscibility was progressively enhanced due to the controllable hydrogen bonding interaction between the hydroxyl in PS(OH) and the ether oxygen in PEO. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study examines the isothermal treatment of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) powders and films. The PHB and PHBV crystallinities were determined using X‐ray diffractometry, and shown to increase with temperature (130–150°C) and then decreased from 55% to 45% at 180°C. The crystal morphology of crystal planes (101) and (111) became sharp at a high temperature. The weight average molecular weight (Mw) of PHB decreased from 1,028,000 to 41,800 g/mol when heated at 180°C for 30 min. The molecular weight of PHB decreased more rapidly than that of PHBV with time. No peak signal was observed in gel permeation chromatography after heating at 150°C because the solubility of PHB changed with crystallinity. The thermal behaviors of PHB and PHBV were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The roughness, contact angle, and surface morphology of PHB and PHBV films were also measured to determine the surface properties. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) groups were grafted onto poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) backbone to modify the properties of PHBV and synthesize a new novel biocompatible graft copolymer. The effect of graft modification with PVP on the thermal and mechanical properties of PHBV was investigated. The thermal stability of grafted PHBV was remarkably improved while the melting temperature (Tm) was almost not affected by graft modification. The isothermal crystallization behavior of samples was observed by polarized optical microscopy and the results showed that the spherulitic radial growth rates (G) of grafted PHBV at the same crystallization temperature (Tc) decreased with increasing graft yield (graft%) of samples. Analysis of isothermal crystallization kinetics showed that both the surface free energy (σe) and the work of chain‐folding per molecular fold (q) of grafted PHBV increased with increasing graft%, implying that the chains of grafted PHBV are less flexible than ungrafted PHBV. This conclusion was in agreement with the mechanical testing results. The Young's modulus of grafted PHBV increased while the elongation decreased with increasing graft%. The hydrophilicity of polymer films was also investigated by the water contact angle measurement and the results revealed that the hydrophilicity of grafted PHBV was enhanced. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization kinetics of pure poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and its blends with bisphenol‐A tetramethyl polycarbonate (TMPC) was investigated isothermally as a function of composition and crystallization temperature (Tc) using differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and polarized optical microscope techniques. Only a single glass‐transition temperature, Tg, was determined for each mixture indicating that this binary blend is miscible over the entire range of composition. The composition dependence of the Tg for this blend was well described by Gordon–Taylor equation with k = 1.8 (higher than unity) indicating strong intermolecular interaction between the two polymer components. The presence of a high Tg amorphous component (TMPC) had a strong influence on the crystallization kinetics of PCL in the blends. A substantial decrease in the crystallization kinetics was observed as the concentration of TMPC rose in the blends. The crystallization half‐time t0.5 increased monotonically with the crystallization temperature for all composition. At any crystallization temperature (Tc) the t0.5 of the blends are longer than the corresponding value for pure PCL. This behavior was attributed to the favorable thermodynamics interaction between PCL and TMPC which in turn led to a depression in the equilibrium melting point along with a simultaneous retardation in the crystallization of PC. The isothermal crystallization kinetics was analyzed on the basis of the Avrami equation. Linear behavior was held true for the augmentation of the radii of spherulites with time for all mixtures, regardless of the blend composition. Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐4‐hydroxybutyrate) (P3/4HB) blend films were prepared by solvent‐cast method. The nonisothermal crystallization results showed that PHBV and P3/4HB are miscible due to a single glass transition temperature (Tg), which is dependent on blend composition. The isothermal crystallization results demonstrate that the crystallization rate of PHBV becomes slower after adding amorphous P3/4HB with 19.2 mol% 4HB, which could be proved through depression of equilibrium melt point ($T_m^o$ ) from 183.7°C to 177.6°C. For pure PHBV and PHBV/P3/4HB (80/20) blend, the maximum crystallization rate appeared at 88°C and 84°C, respectively. FTIR analysis showed that PHBV/P3/4HB blend films would maintain the helical structure, similar to pure PHBV. Meanwhile, with increasing P3/4HB content, the inter‐ and intra‐interactions of PHBV and P3/4HB decrease gradually. Besides, a lower elastic modulus and a higher elongation at break were obtained, which show that the addition of P3/4HB would make the brittle PHBV to ductile materials. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization behavior and isothermal crystallization kinetics of neat poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and PLLA blended with ionic liquid (IL), 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium dibutylphosphate, were researched by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WXRD). Similar to the non‐isothermal crystallization behavior of neat PLLA, when PLLA melt was cooled from 200 to 20°C at a cooling rate of 10°C min?1, no crystallization peak was detected yet with the incorporation of IL. However, the glass transition temperature and cold crystallization temperature of PLLA gradually decreased with the increase of IL content. It can be attributed to the significant plasticizing effect of IL, which improved the chain mobility and cold crystallization ability of PLLA. Isothermal crystallization kinetics was also analyzed by DSC and described by Avrami equation. For neat PLLA and IL/PLLA blends, the Avrami exponent n was almost in the range of 2.5–3.0. It is found that t1/2 reduced largely, and the crystallization rate constant k increased exponentially with the incorporation of IL. These results show that the IL could accelerate the overall crystallization rate of PLLA due to its plasticizing effect. In addition, the dependences of crystallization rate on crystallization temperature and IL content were discussed in detail according to the results obtained by DSC and POM measurements. It was verified by WXRD that the addition of IL could not change the crystal structure of PLLA matrix. The miscibility, melting and crystallization behaviour of poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate], PHB, and oligo[(R,S)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate]‐diol, oligo‐HB, blends have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry: thermograms of blends containing up to 60 wt% oligo‐HB showed behaviour characteristic of single‐phase amorphous glasses with a composition dependent glass transition, Tg, and a depression in the equilibrium melting temperature of PHB. The negative value of the interaction parameter, determined from the equilibrium melting depression, confirms miscibility between blend components. In parallel studies, glass transition relaxations of different melt‐crystallized polymer blends containing 0–20 wt% oligo‐HB were dielectrically investigated between ?70 °C and 120 °C in the 100 Hz to 50 kHz range. The results revealed the existence of a single α‐relaxation process for blends, indicating the miscibility between amorphous fractions of PHB and oligo‐HB. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Biopolymers are gaining increasing interest because of decline of mineral oil reserves, increasing waste problem, and increasing consciousness of society for environmental problems. However, competitiveness of biopolymers compared with conventional plastics is still limited due to partly insufficient properties and high prices. This study investigates the influence of blending of poly(hydroxybutyrate‐co‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) as well as the influence of addition of functionalized montmorillonite (OMMT) to the blends on morphology and thermal behavior. Dispersion state and morphology of the nanocomposites are studied by X‐ray diffraction as well as scanning electron microscopy. Thermal stability is studied by thermogravimetric analysis and crystallization behavior is studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. With respect to the morphology for the blends it can be seen that the immiscible biopolymers PHBV and PBAT are distributed in interlocking zones. There is a good dispersion and homogeneous distribution of OMMT within the biopolymer blends. The addition of 50% or more PBAT to PHBV as well as the insertion of OMMT enhances thermal stability of PHBV. In the blends, the addition of PBAT retards crystallization of PHBV. The OMMT acts as nucleating agent leading in total to more but less perfect crystals in the blends, and the crystallization slows further due to constraint in the movement of polymer chains. These results contribute to the understanding of the structure–properties relationship of bionanocomposite materials for packaging applications. POLYM. Novel fully biodegradable composites were successfully prepared by solution casting. The mechanical properties, chemical structure and intermolecular interaction, the melting and crystallization behaviors, and crystalline morphologies of the Tannic acid (TA)/PHBV composites were investigated. Uniaxial tensile mechanical testing results show that both tensile strength and fracture toughness were enhanced. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results confirm the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions in composites. Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies show that there is a significant increase in Tg and Tcc, and a decrease in melting temperature of TA/PHBV composites. The crystal growth behaviors and crystalline morphologies results were showed that with the addition of TA component, the size of PHBV spherulites reduces, and the number of PHBV spherulites increases significantly. Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), a CO2‐based bioplastic and poly(hydroxybutyrate‐co‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) were melt blended followed by injection molding. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy detected an interaction between the macromolecules from the reduction in the OH peak and a shift in the C?O peak. The onset degradation temperature of the polymer blends was improved by 5% and 19% in comparison to PHBV and PPC, respectively. Blending PPC with PHBV reduced the melting and crystallization temperatures and crystallinity of the latter as observed through differential scanning calorimetry. The amorphous nature of PPC affected the thermal properties of PHBV by hindering the spherulitic growth and diluting the crystalline region. Scanning electron micrographs presented a uniform dispersion and morphology of the blends, which lead to balanced mechanical properties. Biodegradable polymer blends of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) were prepared with different compositions. The mechanical properties of the blends were studied through tensile testing and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The dependence of the elastic modulus and strength data on the blend composition was modeled on the basis of the equivalent box model. The fitting parameters indicated complete immiscibility between PBS and PHBV and a moderate adhesion level between them. The immiscibility of the parent phases was also evidenced by scanning electron observation of the prepared blends. The thermal properties of the blends were studied through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The DSC results showed an enhancement of the crystallization behavior of PBS after it was blended with PHBV, whereas the thermal stability of PBS was reduced in the blends, as shown by the TGA thermograms. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Environmental factors such as oxygen, temperature, and microbial species may have significant effects on decomposition of biodegradable polymers. A representative biodegradable, thermoplastic polymer, poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), was decomposed in an aqueous medium under controlled laboratory conditions by soil microbes for the intrinsic degradation kinetics and the effects of the environmental factors on polymer biodegradation. The amount of proteins, including the PHBV depolymerases, that attached to the polymer surfaces was quite constant during the period of significant mass loss of the polymer specimens. The microbial polymer degradation followed a zero‐order rate model, so the residual mass fraction of PHBV films declined linearly with time. The mixed aerobic microbial organisms from fertile soil showed a higher activity of polymer degradation than an aerobic PHBV‐producing bacterium and the mixed anaerobes in the same soil. The mixed anaerobic microorganisms from barren soil decomposed the polymer at a slower rate than the anaerobes from fertile soil, and this was attributed to fewer microbial cells in the barren soil instead of the difference in the microbial species. The temperature effect on PHBV degradation can be described with an Arrhenius equation, and the activation energy is around 16 kcal/mol. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal properties of blends of poly(hydroxybutyrate‐co‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) prepared by solution casting were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. In the study of PHBV‐SAN blends by differential scanning calorimetry, glass transition temperature and melting point of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends were almost unchanged compared with those of the pure PHBV. This result indicates that the blends of PHBV and SAN are immiscible. However, crystallization temperature of the PHBV in the blends decreased approximately 9–15°. From the results of the Avrami analysis of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends, crystallization rate constant of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends decreased compared with that of the pure PHBV. From the above results, it is suggested that the nucleation of PHBV in the blends is suppressed by the addition of SAN. From the measured crystallization half time and degree of supercooling, interfacial free energy for the formation of heterogeneous nuclei of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends was calculated and found to be 2360 (mN/m)3 for the pure PHBV and 2920–3120 (mN/m)3 for the blends. The values of interfacial free energy indicate that heterogeneity of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends is deactivated by the SAN. This result is consistent with the results of crystallization temperature and crystallization rate constant of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
