This article investigates the effects of electron beam (EB) radiation on poly(D ,L ‐lactic acid)‐b‐poly (ethylene glycol) copolymer (PLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLA). The copolymer films were EB irradiated at doses from 0 to 100 kGy. The degradation of these films was studied by measuring the changes in their molecular weight, mechanical and thermal properties. The dominant effect of EB radiation on PLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLA is chain‐scission. With increasing irradiation dose, recombination reactions or partial crosslinking may occur in addition to chain scission. The degree of chain scission Gs and crosslinking Gx of sample are calculated to be 0.213 and 0.043, respectively. A linear relationship is also established between the decreases in molecular weight with increasing irradiation dose. Elongation at break of the irradiated sample decreases significantly, whereas its tensile strength decreases slightly. The glass transition temperature (Tg) is basically invariant as a function of irradiation dose. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that its thermal stability decreases with increasing dose. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

The thermal decomposition mechanism of maleated poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was investigated by FTIR and 1H NMR. The results of experiments showed that the random chain scission of maleated PHB obeyed the six‐membered ring ester decomposition process. The thermal decomposition behavior of PHB and maleated PHB with different graft degree were studied by thermogravimetry (TGA) using various heating‐up rates. The thermal stability of maleated PHB was evidently better than that of PHB. With increase in graft degree, the thermal decomposition temperature of maleated PHB gradually increased and then declined. Activation energy Ea as a kinetic parameter of thermal decomposition was estimated by the Flynn‐Wall‐Ozawa and Kissinger methods, respectively. It could be seen that approximately equal values of activation energy were obtained by both methods. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was irradiated by 60Co γ‐rays (doses of 50, 100 and 200 kGy) under vacuum. The thermal analysis of control and irradiated PHBV, under vacuum was carried out by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tensile properties of control and irradiated PHBV were examined by using an Instron tensile testing machine. In the thermal degradation of control and irradiated PHBV, a one‐step weight loss was observed. The derivative thermogravimetric curves of control and irradiated PHBV confirmed only one weight‐loss step change. The onset degradation temperature (To) and the temperature of maximum weight‐loss rate (Tp) of control and irradiated PHBV were in line with the heating rate (°C min?1). To and TP of PHBV decreased with increasing radiation dose at the same heating rate. The DSC results showed that 60Co γ‐radiation significantly affected the thermal properties of PHBV. With increasing radiation dose, the melting temperature (Tm) of PHBV shifted to a lower value, due to the decrease in crystal size. The tensile strength and fracture strain of the irradiated PHBV decreased, hence indicating an increased brittleness. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Biodegradable and photocurable multiblock copolymers of various compositions were synthesized by the high‐temperature solution polycondensation of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) diols of molecular weight (Mn) = 3000 and poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEG) of Mn = 3000 with a dichloride of 5‐cinnamoyloxyisophthalic acid (ICA) as a chain extender, followed by irradiation by a 400 W high‐pressure mercury lamp (λ > 280 nm) to form a network structure. The gel contents increased with photocuring time, reaching a level of over 90% after 10 min for all copolymers without a photoinitiator. The thermal and mechanical properties of the photocured copolymers were examined by DSC and tensile tests. In cyclic thermomechanical tensile tests, the photocured ICA/PCL/PEG copolymer films showed good shape‐memory properties at 37–60°C, with both shape fixity ratio and shape recovery ratio over 90% at a maximum tensile strain of 100–300%. The water absorption of these copolymers and their rate of degradation in a phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0) at 37°C increased significantly with increasing PEG content. The novel photocured ICA/PCL/PEG multiblock copolymers are potentially useful in biomedical applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Miscible polymer blends based on various ratios of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were prepared in film form by the solution casting technique using benzene as a common solvent. The thermal decomposition behavior of these blends and their individual homopolymers before and after γ‐irradiation at various doses (50–250 kGy) was investigated. The thermogravimetric analysis technique was utilized to determine the temperatures at which the maximum value of the rate of reaction (Tmax) occurs and the kinetic parameters of the thermal decomposition. The rate of reaction curves of the individual homopolymers or their blends before or after γ‐ irradiation displayed similar trends in which the Tmax corresponding to all polymers was found to exist in the same position but with different values. These findings and the visual observations of the blend solutions and the transparency of the films gave support to the complete miscibility of these blends. Three transitions were observed along the reaction rate versus temperature curves; the first was around 100–200°C with no defined Tmax, which may arise from the evaporation of the solvent. The second Tmax was in the 340–380°C range, which depended on the polymer blend and the γ‐irradiation condition. A third transition was seen in the rate of reaction curves only for pure PVAc and its blends with PMMA with ratios up to 50%, regardless of γ‐ irradiation. We concluded that γ‐irradiation improved the thermal stability of PVAc/PMMA blends, even though the PMMA polymer was degradable by γ irradiation. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atactic poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (a‐PHB) and block copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐b‐PEG) were synthesized through anionic polymerization and coordination polymerization, respectively. As demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) measurements, both chemosynthesized a‐PHB and biosynthesized isotactic PHB (i‐PHB) are miscible with the PEG segment phase of PCL‐b‐PEGs. However, there is no evidence showing miscibility between both PHBs and the PCL segment phase of the copolymer even though PCL has been block‐copolymerized with PEG. Based on these results, PCL‐b‐PEG was added, as a compatibilizer, to both the PCL/a‐PHB blends and the PCL i‐PHB blends. The blend films were obtained through the evaporation of chloroform solutions of mixed components. Excitingly, the improvement in mechanical properties of PCL/PHB blends was achieved as anticipated initially upon the addition of PCL‐b‐PEG. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Samples of polyacrylamide (PAAm), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and their complex were γ‐irradiated at different doses, namely 48, 96, and 144 KGy. The examination of the infrared spectra of these samples showed that there are no significant observable changes in their spectral features apart from slight changes in the intensities of the absorption bands. The analysis of the absorbances ratios (A 1700 cm?1/A 1450 cm?1) and (A 1650 cm?1/A 1450 cm?1), denoted as R1 and R2, respectively, showed that these ratios depend on γ‐doses. It was found that in the case of PAA, R1 assumed linear increase with increasing the dose to 96 KGy and then showed marked decrease. For the complex, R1 increased slightly by increasing the dose to 96 KGy and then decreased. For PAAm, although irradiation with 48 KGy increases the values of R2, irradiation with 96 and 144 KGy decreases its value. On the other hand, for the complex, R2 suggested slight decrease on irradiation with 48 KGy followed by continued increases with increasing the dose up to 144 KGy. The increase in R1 and R2 may be due to crosslinking as a result of the formation of free radicals. The decrease in these ratios after irradiation with 96 KGy may be due to degradation. It was concluded that γ‐irradiation has a lower effect on the complex (i.e., the complex has a structure which is different from those of PAA and PAAm). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were prepared by the ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) and dibutylmagnesium in 1,4‐dioxane solution at 70°C. The triblock structure and molecular weight of the copolymers were analyzed and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography. The crystallization and thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results illustrated that the crystallization and melting behaviors of the copolymers were depended on the copolymer composition and the relative length of each block in copolymers. Crystallization exothermal peaks (Tc) and melting endothermic peaks (Tm) of PEG block were significantly influenced by the relative length of PCL blocks, due to the hindrance of the lateral PCL blocks. With increasing of the length of PCL blocks, the diffraction and the melting peak of PEG block disappeared gradually in the WAXD patterns and DSC curves, respectively. In contrast, the crystallization of PCL blocks was not suppressed by the middle PEG block. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

A two‐step procedure was used to synthesize the cellulose acetate butyrate and poly(ethylene glycol) graft copolymer (CAB‐g‐PEG). By choosing the appropriate composition, the crosslinked graft copolymer or not could be obtained. Then, the CAB‐g‐PEG copolymer was blended with poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), to further improve the mechanical properties of PHB. The results indicated that PHB and CAB‐g‐PEG that were not crosslinked were miscible over the entire composition range. As the CAB‐g‐PEG copolymer increased in the PHB/CAB‐g‐PEG blends, the melting temperature of the blends decreased, the crystallization of PHB became more difficult, and the crystallinity of the blend and PHB phase all decreased. The tensile properties and impact strength of the PHB/CAB‐g‐PEG blends were superior to the PHB/CAB blends. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 1471–1478, 2006  相似文献

The thermal degradation of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) [P(HB‐HV)] was studied using thermogravimetry (TG). In the thermal degradation of PHB, the temperature at the onset of weight loss (To) was derived by To = 0.97B + 259, where B represents the heating rate (°C/min). The temperature at which the weight loss rate was maximum (Tp) was Tp = 1.07B + 273, and the final temperature (Tf) at which degradation was completed was Tf = 1.10B + 280. The percentage of the weight loss at temperature Tp (Cp) was 69 ± 1% whereas the percentage of the weight loss at temperature Tf (Cf) was 96 ± 1%. In the thermal degradation of P(HB‐HV) (7:3), To = 0.98B + 262, Tp = 1.00B + 278, and Tf = 1.12B + 285. The values of Cp and Cf were 62 ± 7 and 93 ± 1%, respectively. The derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) curves of PHB confirmed only one weight loss step change because the polymer mainly consisted of the HB monomer only. The DTG curves of P(HB‐HV), however, suggested multiple weight loss step changes; this was probably due to the different evaporation rates of the two monomers. The incorporation of 10 and 30 mol % of the HV component into the polyester increased the various thermal temperatures (To, Tp, andTf) by 7–12°C (measured at B = 20°C/min). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Grafting of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(lactide) (PLA) chains on poly(vinyl alcohol) backbone (PVA degree of hydrolysis 99%) was investigated using MgH2 environmental catalyst and melt‐grown ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone (CL) and L ‐lactide (LA), that avoiding undesirable toxic catalyst and solvent. The ability of MgH2 as catalyst as well as yield of reaction were discussed according to various PVA/CL/MgH2 and PVA/LA/MgH2 ratio. PVA‐g‐PCL and PVA‐g‐PLA were characterized by 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR, DSC, SEC, IR. For graft copolymers easily soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or chloroform, wettability and surface energy of cast film varied in relation with the length and number of hydrophobic chains. Aqueous solution of micelle‐like particles was realized by dissolution in THF then addition of water. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) decreased with hydrophobic chains. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Various problems, including high crystallinity, high melting temperature, poor thermal stability, hydrophobicity and brittleness, have impeded many practical applications of poly[(3‐hydroxybutyrate)‐co‐(3‐hydroxyvalerate)] (PHBV) as an environmentally friendly material and biomedical material. In the work reported here, multi‐block copolymers containing PHBV and poly(ethylene glycol) (PHBV‐b‐PEG) were synthesized with telechelic hydroxylated PHBV as a hard and hydrophobic segment, PEG as a soft and hydrophilic segment and 1,6‐hexamethylene diisocyanate as a coupling reagent to solve the problems mentioned above. PHBV and PEG blocks in PHBV‐b‐PEG formed separate crystalline phases with lower crystallinity levels and lower melting temperatures than those of phases formed in the precursors. The crystallite dimensions of the two blocks in PHBV‐b‐PEG were smaller than those of the corresponding precursors. Compared to values for the original PHBV, the maximum decomposition temperature of the PHBV block in PHBV‐b‐PEG was 16.0 °C higher and the water contact angle was 9° lower. In addition, the elongation at break was 2.8% for a pure PHBV fiber but 20.9% for a PHBV/PHBV‐b‐PEG fiber with a PHBV‐b‐PEG content of 30%. PHBV‐b‐PEGs can overcome some of the disadvantages of pure PHBV; it is possible that PHBV might be a good candidate for the formulation of environmentally friendly materials and biomedical materials. BACKGROUND: Poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) has attracted wide interest as a biodegradable polymer. However, its use is restricted in certain applications due to its low melting point. RESULTS: PBAT was treated using γ‐radiation. The radiation features were analyzed using Soxhlet extraction, and the ratio of chain scission and crosslinking and gelation dose were determined using the classical Charlesby–Pinner equation. The results showed that PBAT is a radiation‐crosslinkable polymer. The degree of crosslinking increased with increasing radiation dose; the relation between sol fraction and dose followed the Charlesby–Pinner equation. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed that the melting temperature (Tm) and the heat of fusion (ΔHm) of PBAT exhibited almost no change in the first scan. The second scan, however, showed a decrease in Tm and ΔHm. The glass transition temperature of irradiated PBAT increased with increasing radiation dose. The weight loss of control and irradiated PBAT resulting from thermal degradation was a one‐step process. Moreover, the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased with an increase in radiation dose. However, the Young's modulus and stress at yield were not greatly affected by γ‐radiation. CONCLUSION: PBAT can be crosslinked using γ‐radiation. The crosslinking efficiency is relatively low. The thermal and mechanical properties of PBAT are affected by γ‐radiation. Polymer blends based on various ratios of polystyrene (PS) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were exposed to different doses of gamma radiation up to 25 Mrad. The structure–property behavior of the polymer blends before and after they had been irradiated was investigated by DSC, TGA, and FTIR spectroscopy. The DSC scans of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the different polymer blends showed that the Tg was greatly decreased by increasing the ratio of the PMMA component in the polymer blends. Moreover, the Tg of PS/PMMA blends was found to decrease with increasing irradiation dose. The depression in Tg was noticeable in the case of blends rich in PMMA component. The TGA thermograms showed that the thermal stability of the unirradiated polymer blends decreases with increasing the ratios of PMMA component. Also, it was found that the presence of PS polymer in the blends affords protection against gamma radiation degradation and improves their thermal stability. However, exposing the polymer blends to high doses of gamma radiation caused oxidative degradation to PMMA components and decreased the thermal stability. The investigation of the kinetic parameters of the thermal decomposition reaction confirm the results of thermal stability. The FTIR analysis of the gamma‐irradiated polymer blend films gives further support to the TGA data. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 72: 509–520, 1999  相似文献

The energetic material, 3‐nitro‐1,5‐bis(4,4′‐dimethyl azide)‐1,2,3‐triazolyl‐3‐azapentane (NDTAP), was firstly synthesized by means of Click Chemistry using 1,5‐diazido‐3‐nitrazapentane as main material. The structure of NDTAP was confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy; mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of NDTAP was determined by X‐ray diffraction. It belongs to monoclinic system, space group C2/c with crystal parameters a=1.7285(8) nm, b=0.6061(3) nm, c=1.6712(8) nm, β=104.846(8)°, V=1.6924(13) nm3, Z=8, μ=0.109 mm−1, F(000)=752, and Dc=1.422 g cm−3. The thermal behavior and non‐isothermal decomposition kinetics of NDTAP were studied with DSC and TG‐DTG methods. The self‐accelerating decomposition temperature and critical temperature of thermal explosion are 195.5 and 208.2 °C, respectively. NDTAP presents good thermal stability and is insensitive.  相似文献

Films of polymer blends having various contents of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) were prepared by the solution casting technique using water as a common solvent. The thermal, mechanical and morphological properties of these blends before and after exposure to various doses of gamma radiation, up to 100 kGy, have been investigated. The visual observation and reflectance measurements show that PVA/PAM blends are miscible over a wide range of composition. Moreover, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms show only a single glass transition temperature (Tg), but not those of PVA or PAM homopolymers, giving further support to the complete compatibility of such blends. The Tg of PVA/PAM blends decreases with increasing content of PAM but increases after exposure to gamma irradiation, indicating the occurrence of crosslinking. These findings were demonstrated by the scanning electron micrographs of the fracture surfaces and the tensile mechanical properties. The TGA thermograms and percentage mass loss at different decomposition temperatures show that unirradiated PVA homopolymer possesses higher thermal stability than PAM homopolymer and their blends within the heating temperature range investigated, up to 250 °C. An opposite trend is observed within the temperature range 300–500 °C. In general, the thermal stability of homopolymers or their blends improves slighly after exposure to an irradiation dose of 100 kGy. These findings are clearly confirmed by the calculated activation energies of the thermal decomposition reaction of the homopolymers and the blends. © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(p‐dioxanone)–poly(ethylene glycol)–poly(p‐dioxanone) ABA triblock copolymers (PEDO) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization from p‐dioxanone using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights as macroinitiators in N2 atmosphere. The copolymer was characterized by 1H NMR spectroscope. The thermal behavior, crystallization, and thermal stability of these copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric measurements. The water absorption of these copolymers was also measured. The results indicated that the content and length of PEG chain have a greater effect on the properties of copolymers. This kind of biodegradable copolymer will find a potential application in biomedical materials. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102:1092–1097, 2006  相似文献

Latex films were prepared by annealing pyrene (Py)‐labeled poly(methyl methacrylate) particles at glass‐transition temperature (100°C). These films were then irradiated by γ‐rays from 60Co in a gamma cell at room temperature at the same dose rate (rad/h) for 30 min. Before dissolution films were annealed at elevated temperatures for a 30‐min time interval to complete the film formation process. Steady‐state fluorescence (SSF) technique were used to monitor the dissolution of these irradiated latex films. The dissolution of films in chloroform–heptane (80–20%) mixture was monitored in real time by the Py fluorescence intensity change. Relaxation constants k0 and desorption coefficients Dd of polymer chains were measured. It was observed that both Dd and k0 values first increased and then decreased by increasing the annealing temperature. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 129–137, 2002  相似文献

Chitosan‐g‐poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) copolymers with different grafting percent were prepared by grafting water‐soluble PVA onto chitosan. The drug‐release behavior was studied using the chitosan‐g‐PVA copolymer matrix containing prednisolone in a drug‐delivery system under various conditions. The relationship between the amount of the released drug and the square root of time was linear. From this result, the drug‐release behavior through the chitosan‐g‐PVA copolymer matrix is shown to be consistent with Higuchi's diffusion model. The drug‐release apparent constant (KH) was slightly decreased at pH 1.2, but increased at pH 7.4 and 10 according to the increasing PVA grafting percent. Also, KH was decreased by heat treatment and crosslinking. The drug release behavior of the chitosan‐g‐PVA copolymer matrix was able to be controlled by the PVA grafting percent, heat treatment, or crosslinking and was also less affected by the pH values than was the chitosan matrix. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) homopolymers and their blended samples with different compositions were prepared using cast technique and subjected to X‐ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD patterns of homopolymers and their blended samples indicated that blending amorphous materials, such as PVP, with semicrystalline polymer, such as PVA, gives rise to an amorphous structure with two halo peaks at positions identical to those found in pure PVP. Identification of structure and assignments of the most evident IR ‐ absorption bands of PVP and PVA as well as their blends in the range 400–2000 cm?1 were studied. UV–vis spectra were used to study absorption spectra and estimate the values of absorption edge, Eg, and band tail, Ee, for all samples. Making use of Coats‐Redfern relation, thermogravimetric (TG) data allowed the calculation of the values of some thermodynamic parameters, such as activation energy E, entropy ΔS#, enthalpy ΔH, and free energy of activation ΔG# for different decomposition steps in the samples under investigation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
