Examined negative priming for spatial location in 2 studies. Study 1 involved combinations of target, distractor, or both, across prime and probe, being presented once to each S in a negative priming for spatial location procedure. Specifically, stimuli were presented using an oscilloscope controlled by a computer system, and the fixation display appeared immediately after a foot pedal was depressed. After 500 msec, the prime array was added to the fixation display until the S responded (depressing the key corresponding to the location of the target). In the 1st Exp, the procedure was examined across a number of Ss (12 university students; aged 20–30 yrs). In the 2nd Exp, the procedure was tested over repeated sessions with 1 S (university student; aged 23 yrs) on consecutive days. Study 2 verified the results in 13 university students. The findings suggest that negative priming in the spatial location procedure may be more closely related to inhibition of return, or to the automatic attraction of attention by new objects, than to the concepts of distractor inhibition, episodic retrieval, and feature mismatch which have traditionally been used to explain negative priming for spatial location. Responses to recently ignored stimuli may be slower or less accurate than to new stimuli. This negative priming effect decays over time when delay is randomized within Ss, but not when delay varies between Ss. In Exp 1, response–stimulus intervals (RSI) of 500 and 4,000 msec were randomized within Ss in a target localization task. Negative priming of ignored locations diminished with longer delay. However, no significant decay was obtained when RSI and the preceding RSI were equal. Similar results were obtained when RSI and preceding RSI were deliberately confounded by blocking (Exp 2). Investigated whether negative priming occurs in the absence of overt prime selection in 3 Exps using 16 college students with normal or corrected-to-normal vision as Ss. In Exp 1, Ss responded to a target item in the probe display only, instead of the usual procedure that requires Ss to also respond to 1 of the items in the prime display. In Exp 2, Ss were asked to choose the less bright of 2 probes displayed in the same color. The same procedure was used for Exp 3 except the distractor was removed from the probe display. The authors conclude that overt selection against a prime distractor in favor of a probe target is not necessary to observe negative priming. This result demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding concerning the procedure required to measure negative priming and presents an experimental procedure that is of considerable utility in evaluating theoretical accounts of negative priming. Two hypotheses concerning people's ability to predict later memory performance for unrecalled items were investigated. The target retrievability hypothesis states that feeling-of-knowing judgments (FKJs) are based on partial target information, and the cue familiarity hypothesis asserts that they are based on recognition of the cues. In Exps 1 and 2, Ss either generated or read the targets of paired associates. Half of the cues had been primed in a pleasantness-rating task. The generation manipulation increased recall but had no effect on FKJs. Cue priming had no effect on recall but increased FKJs. In Exp 3, using general information questions primed after the initial recall attempt, both cue and target priming increased FKJs. Exp 4, which remedied difficulties in Exp 3, showed no effect of target priming, whereas cue priming increased FKJs. The results favor the cue familiarity hypothesis. Near-threshold primes were "flashed" in a target location prior to the onset of a target word while Ss read. The type and duration of the prime were manipulated. In Exp 1, identical, related, and unrelated primes were presented for 60, 45, or 30 msec from onset of an eye fixation. The prime was then replaced with the target word, which remained in place while Ss finished reading the sentence. Fixation time on the target word was measured. Exp 2 replicated Exp 1, with 2 exceptions: A random letter string replaced the identical prime condition, and prime durations of 39, 30, or 21 msec were used. In both experiments, significant priming effects (related vs unrelated) were obtained when the prime was presented for 30 msec. Results are discussed with regard to subliminal priming effects. In 2 experiments, the ability of amnesic patients to exhibit long-lasting perceptual priming after a single exposure to pictures was evaluated. Ss named pictures as quickly as possible on a single occasion and later named the same pictures mixed with new pictures. In Exp 1, amnesic patients exhibited fully intact priming effects lasting at least 7 days. In Exp 2, the priming effect for both groups was shown to depend on both highly specific visual information and on less visual, more conceptual information. In contrast, recognition memory was severely impaired in the patients, as assessed by both accuracy and response time. The results provide the 1st report of a long-lasting priming effect in amnesic patients, based on a single encounter, which occurs as strongly in the patients as in normal Ss. Together with other recent findings, the results suggest that long-lasting priming and recognition memory depend on separate brain systems. A same–different letter-matching task was used to examine the effects of stimulus intensity on negative priming, which is poorer performance when target letters have been presented as distractor letters on the immediately preceding trial. In Exp 1, with 68 college students, stimulus intensity was manipulated between-participants, whereas in Exp 2, with 32 college students, it varied randomly from trial-to-trial within-participants. In Exp 1, negative priming was equivalent for both stimulus intensities. In Exp 2, negative priming effects were larger for repeated intensity stimuli than for nonrepeated intensity stimuli, when stimulus intensity was dim. Furthermore, for repeated intensity stimuli, negative priming effects were enhanced when the overt response required to the stimulus was repeated from prime to probe trial. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that negative priming may be due to memory confusion, rather than to inhibition of the distractor stimuli. Conducted 4 experiments investigating the role of priming effects in paired-associate learning. Ss for all 4 experiments were 5 male and 3 female alcoholics (mean age 53.8 yrs; WAIS—R IQs 85–203) with Korsakoff syndrome. Control Ss were 26 male alcoholics (mean age 47.6 yrs). Exp I illustrated the distinction between the memory impairment of amnesic (Korsakoff) Ss and their intact priming ability. In Exp II, amnesic Ss showed good paired-associate learning for related word pairs but controls performed significantly better. Exp II also showed that the forgetting of related word pairs by amnesic Ss followed the same time course as the decay of word priming. Exp III showed that amnesic Ss were as good as controls at learning related word pairs when word-association tests were used. Exp IV showed that amnesic Ss exhibited normal priming when they were asked to free associate to words that were semantically related to previously presented words. Results indicate that both priming effects and paired-associate learning of related words depended on activation, a process that is preserved in amnesia. Backward priming was investigated under conditions similar to those used in lexical ambiguity research. Ss received prime-target word pairs that were associated either unidirectionally (BABY-STORK) or bidirectionally (BABY-CRY). In Exp 1, targets were presented 500 ms following the onset of visual primes, and Ss made naming or lexical decision responses to the targets. Forward priming was obtained in all conditions, while backward priming occurred only with lexical decision. In Exp 2, primes were presented auditorily, either in isolation or in a sentence. Targets followed the offset of the primes either immediately or after 200 ms. Backward priming occurred with both response tasks, but only when the prime was an isolated word. Backward priming decreased over time with the naming task, but not with lexical decision. These results suggest that the locus of the backward priming effect is different for the 2 response tasks. Four experiments examined the effects of exogenously and endogenously activated inhibition of return (IOR) on endogenously generated and visually guided saccades. In Exps 1–3, 37 Ss responded to a peripheral target by making either a prosaccade (toward the target) or an antisaccade (toward the field opposite the target). Results of Exps 1 and 3 suggest that when IOR is activated by a peripheral precue, it functions as a location tagging mechanism that inhibits detection of signals at the tagged location; thus, IOR cannot simply be a motor alternation bias. Exp 2 showed that IOR could be generated by the execution of an endogenous saccade. Unlike Exp 1, however, IOR was manifest only in the prosaccade task. Exp 4, in which 24 Ss made endogenous saccades in response to a central arrow target, provided some evidence that IOR can influence the latency of endogenously generated saccades to the precued location. A 2-choice reaction task was used to evaluate changes in stimulus–response translation with practice. In Exp 1, 4 groups of Ss practiced with either a direct or indirect mapping of left–right stimuli to left–right responses and either a crossed or uncrossed hand placement and transferred to 1 of the 4 Mapping?×?Placement conditions. Stimulus–response location and response location effector relations affected performance initially and after practice. In Exps 2 and 3, Ss switched every 42 trials between conditions for which only the stimulus location–effector (Exp 2) or stimulus–response location relation (Exp 3) remained constant. Switching produced interference in Exp 2 but not in Exp 3, corroborating the influence of the stimulus–response location relation on performance. Evaluated semantic priming when the prime was masked below naming threshold and the target was named in 4 experiments with 263 undergraduates. Exp I showed that when word primes were masked and word targets were named, prior knowledge of the related pairs did not alter semantic priming. Semantic priming within categories occurred only when the prime stimulus was the 1st category exemplar. Findings of Exp II indicate that when masked pictures were used as primes, semantic priming for word targets was sensitive to the category exemplar level of the prime but not to the category exemplar level of the target. Word association norms collected in Exp III did not support the hypothesis that the effect of category exemplar level was mediated by the strength of word association. Exp IV revealed significant semantic priming for masked picture primes and within-category word targets, regardless of the level of word association between prime and target. Exp IV also demonstrated semantic priming for high word association targets that were not members of the same semantic category. For all experiments, Ss with the longest average reaction times (RTs) also showed the largest semantic priming effect for naming word targets. It is suggested that viewing one of the highest ranking category exemplars activates the memory representation of the category, perhaps because such prototypic exemplars are contained within the category concept itself. Examined the independence of effects of repetition from those of distinctiveness and semantic priming in the recognition of familiar faces. In Exp 1 (16 undergraduate Ss), repetition priming was shown to be additive with face distinctiveness in a face familiarity decision task, in which Ss made speeded familiarity decisions to a sequence of famous and unfamiliar faces. Exp 2 (16 undergraduate and postgraduate Ss) examined the combined effects of distinctiveness and semantic priming. The effect of distinctiveness was additive with that of semantic priming. Exp 3 (32 undergraduates and postgraduates) used a more powerful design in which effects of distinctiveness and semantic priming were assessed while all items were repeated 3 times during the course of the experiment. Tested an inhibition-based fan effect hypothesis, using a negative priming paradigm in Exps 1 and 2 and a short-term memory scanning paradigm in Exp 3. In Exp 1 (24 undergraduates) and Exp 2 (48 undergraduates), the time to name a letter (surrounded by 1–3 distractor letters) was longer when it had been a distractor on the previous display than in a control condition where the target letter had not been one of the distractors in the previous display. This negative priming effect attenuated as the number of distractors in the previous display increased. The juxtaposition of an irrelevancy with a relevancy heuristic supports the possible existence of a spreading inhibition counterpart of spreading activation. Carried out 2 experiments which varied CS location in a shuttle box avoidance task performed by goldfish. In Exp I onset of a light CS was presented in either the same, the opposite, or both compartments with respect to the location of 40 Ss. The same-side CS Ss performed significantly better and the opposite-side Ss significantly worse than the both-sides CS Ss. These results are explained by a motivational stimulus hypothesis where the directional components of the signal interact with a directional response. Exp II replicated the conditions of Exp I with light offset as the CS. Directional signal information had no effect on performance. Investigated inhibition of return (IOR) at 4 target locations (a near and a far location in each visual hemifield). Exp 1 was conducted to determine if IOR extends over a cued visual hemifield. 12 Ss indicated when they visually detected a cross after being instructed to keep their eyes fixed on a specific point. The target locations were aligned horizontally and IOR was observed at the near locations when cues were presented at the far locations but not at the far locations when cues were presented at the near locations. In Exp 2, the target locations were not horizontally aligned and IOR was not observed for near locations when the far locations were cued. Otherwise, the same procedure and apparatus as in Exp 1 were used by 12 different Ss. The authors conclude that IOR may be an attentional phenomenon and that attention may operate in an analog fashion such that locations in the path of the attentional movement may be attended to. Examined evidence of latent inhibition in a series of experiments with goldfish. In Exp I, 12 Ss were given nonreinforced preexposure to a color that subsequently predicted shock in an activity conditioning situation; their performance did not differ from that of 12 control Ss preexposed to a markedly different color. In Exp II, 12 Ss given nonreinforced preexposure to a tone and an unstimulated control group of 12 Ss were trained in an appetitive situation, with the tone serving either as a conditioned excitor or as a conditioned inhibitor. Preexposure had significant effect in the conditioned excitation training, but it reduced the level of responding both to the positive stimulus and to the negative compound in the conditioned inhibition training. In Exps III and IV, classical aversive conditioning was studied in the shuttle box. In Exp III, excitatory conditioning to a color was found to be impaired (relative to the performance of nonpreexposed control Ss) as much by nonreinforced preexposure to the training color as by nonreinforced preexposure to a markedly different color; substantial variation in amount of preexposure was without significant effect. In the conditioned inhibition training of Exp IV, 12 Ss with nonreinforced preexposure responded less than did 12 unstimulated control Ss, both to the positive stimulus and to the negative compound. Results demonstrate that the effect of preexposure on goldfish is their reduction of general responsiveness or level of arousal. Examined the proposition that problem-type schemata include both problem-specific and abstract information. Recognition priming was used to capture schema acquisition as it evolves in analogical problem solving. Priming was used to show that Ss form associations in memory between problem-specific sentences drawn from analogous problems. In Exp 1, Ss formed such associations but only when analogical transfer was facilitated. In Exp 2, Ss formed associations only among sentences that related to abstract problem information. In Exp 3, Ss did not form associations among sentences that interfered with access to abstract information during transfer. In Exp 4, Ss accessed problem-specific sentences in problem-type schemata when given new problems of the same type. The results suggest that problem solvers retain problem-specific information in schemata because the information affords access to abstract information during transfer. Results are discussed in terms of a conservative generalization model of schema acquisition that emphasizes the importance of problem-specific information in problem solving. Two studies provide evidence that misattribution of arousal facilitates romantic attraction. In Exp I, arousal of 54 male undergraduates was manipulated through exercise. Arousal Ss liked an attractive female confederate more and an unattractive female less than did controls. In Exp II, arousal of 66 Ss was manipulated in a positive (comedy tape) or negative (mutilation tape) way; other Ss heard a nonarousing tape (textbook excerpt). Results replicate the interaction found in Exp I: Valence of initial arousal did not affect attraction to the confederate. Words or pictures completed sentence fragments to form coherent or incoherent sentences. Ss made lexical decisions about words and object decisions about pictures. Modality was blocked in Exp 1 and mixed in Exp 2. In both experiments there were similar effects of context for words and pictures, contrary to the hypothesis that lexical priming produces the sentence context effect. Mixed conditions produced longer response latencies than blocked conditions but did not interact with the context effect. The finding of no interaction between the effect of context and the mixed-blocked manipulation supports a version of lexical modularity in which context effects arise as a function of post-access integration processing.
