Blends of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and recycled poly(ether ether ketone) (r‐PEEK) were prepared using a twin‐screw extruder. The carbon nanotube (CNT) added to the blends not only improved the compatibility of the two polymers, but also affected the morphology of the immiscible PPS/r‐PEEK blends. R‐PEEK always forms the dispersed phase and PPS the continuous phase in such blends. In the composite, CNT particles were observed in the PPS phase, mostly distributes in the interface between PPS and PEEK. The results show that r‐PEEK improves the impact and tensile strength of PPS, but does not provide nucleation effect on PPS. However, CNT improved the flexural modulus of PPS/r‐PEEK blends and promoted the crystallization of r‐PEEK rather than that of PPS. The prepared PPS/r‐PEEK blends provided larger electrical conductivity than neat polymers. Adding 20 wt % CNT to blend resulted in composite with the minimum volume resistivity, a reduction of four orders of magnitude, compared with that of the neat blend. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Enhancement of tensile strength, impact strength, and flexural strength of polypropylene/short glass fiber composites by treating the glass fibers with coupling agent, mixing with maleated polypropylene (MPP) for compatibilization and adhesion, and with nucleating agent for improvement of polypropylene crystallization was studied. The results showed that both the silane coupling agent and MPP enhance tensile strength, impact strength, and flexural strength. In the absence of MPP, the effect of silane coupling agent on the mechanical properties of the composites decreases in the following order: alkyl trimethoxy silane (WD‐10) > γ‐methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (WD‐70) > N‐(β‐aminoethyl)‐γ‐aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (WD‐52), whereas in the presence of MPP, the order changes as follows: WD‐70 > WD‐10 > WD‐52. When the glass fibers were treated with WD‐52, 4,4‐diamino‐diphenylmethane bismaleimide (BMI) can further enhance the mechanical properties of the composite. The three kinds of strengths increase with MPP amount to maximum values at 5% MPP. As a nucleating agent, adipic acid is better than disodium phthalate in improving the mechanical properties, except for the notched impact strength. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction showed that the adipic acid is an α‐type nucleating agent, whereas disodium phthalate is a β‐type nucleating agent. Blending with styrene–butadiene rubber can somewhat improve the notched impact strength of the composites, but severely lowers the tensile strength and bending strength. Scanning electron micrographs of the broken surface of the composite showed greater interfacial adhesion between the glass fibers and polypropylene in the modified composite than that without modification. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyethylene terephthalate/high density polyethylene (PET/HDPE) composites containing a near infrared reflective (NIR, nickel antimony titanium yellow rutile) pigment was prepared using ethylene‐glycidyl methacrylate‐vinyl acetate (EGMA‐VA) as a compatibilizer to increase the infrared reflection of PET/HDPE and limit the thermal heat accumulation in light of environmental and energy conservation concerns. HDPE was premixed with NIR to form N‐HDPE masterbatch. A good interfacial bonding between PET matrix and HDPE dispersed phase with the help of compatibilizer was confirmed through Fourier transform‐infrared spectra, scanning electron microscopy, and torque rheometer. For PET/N‐HDPE composites, the major X‐ray diffraction peaks and melting behaviors remained unchanged, indicating the limited alternation of crystalline structure for the composite systems with or without compatibilizer. The observed increment in the crystallization temperature of PET for the investigated PET/N‐HDPE composites was mainly due to the nucleation role of both inorganic NIR and HDPE. Tensile strength and elongation at break for compatibilized cases at various N‐HDPE contents conferred higher values than those of the corresponding counterparts without compatibilizer. Yet, Young's modulus for compatibilized systems was about 40% lower than that for systems without compatibilizer, attributed to the rubbery nature of EGMA‐VA. With the inclusion of NIR into HDPE to form PET/N‐HDPE composites with or without EGMA‐VA compatibilizer, the values of reflectance increased to a great degree. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Rheological and interfacial tension data were employed to predict the morphology and thermal and mechanical properties of noncompatibilized and compatibilized poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) blends. PLA was melt blended with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and ethylene elastomer (EE) and compatibilized by ethylene–butyl acrylate–glycidyl methacrylate (EBG) in an internal mixer chamber. Both TPU and EE TPEs have higher viscosities than PLA, and the interfacial properties evaluated have revealed better adhesion between domains of PLA–TPU. The efficiency of the compatibilizer agent EBG depended on the TPE type inferred by modifications in the scanning electron microscopy images of PLA/TPE blends and by the Izod impact strength (improved by 23%). The EBG was more effective in the PLA/TPU blend. The TPEs and EBG did not affect the PLA thermal stability, and no thermal event was observed in the usual PLA extrusion and injection temperature range. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study, AB type-heteroarm star-shaped poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(lactic acid) (PCL-PLA) polymers with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) core ((PCL)4-POSS-(PLA)4, coded as SPLA) were synthesized successfully by using ring opening polymerization and click chemistry techniques together. The synthesized polymers were compounded with commercial PLA at different blending ratios (PLA/SPLA = 100/0, 95/5, 90/10, and 80/20% wt). The effects of heteroarm SPLA polymers having different arm lengths (n = 10, 20, 30, and 50) on morphological, mechanical, and thermal behaviors of PLA were investigated. It is determined that SPLA polymers with four PLA and four PCL arms on its structure enhanced mechanical properties of PLA. The tensile modulus decreased, and lowest modulus values were observed with blends prepared at 80/20 ratio. Elongation at break values increased in all blends, maximum increment was observed with 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate (PDI) containing SPLA20 blends prepared at 90/10 ratio. This result showed that SPLA20 had optimum chain length for chain extension reactions of between PLA chains. Besides, a trade compatibilizer PDI was utilized to enhance the intercompatibility of binary polymer blends.  相似文献

A linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) matrix was modified with an organic peroxide and by a reaction with maleic anhydride (MAn) and was simultaneously compounded with untreated wood flour in a twin‐screw extruder. The thermal and mechanical properties of the modified LLDPE and the resulting composites were evaluated. The degree of crystallinity was reduced in the modified LLDPE, but it increased with the addition of wood flour for the formation of the composites. Significant improvements in the tensile strength, ductility, and creep resistance were obtained for the MAn‐modified composites. This enhancement in the mechanical behavior could be attributed to an improvement in the compatibility between the filler and the matrix. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study exhibited an approach of high‐value utilization of straw fiber (SF) in polymer composites. The rigid poly(vinyl chloride) [PVC]/SF and PVC/SF coated with liquid nitrile‐butadiene rubber (PVC/LNBR‐SF) composites were both fabricated by melt mixing. The chemical structure and crystal structure of LNBR‐SF were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The mechanical properties and micro‐structure of PVC/SF and PVC/LNBR‐SF composites were also studied. FTIR and XRD results showed that the chemical structure and crystal structure of SF did not change after modifying with LNBR. The mechanical properties analysis showed that the PVC/LNBR‐SF composites exhibited better tensile strength, elongation at break and notched impact strength than those of PVC/SF composites owing to the compatibilization and toughening effect of LNBR. Scanning electron microscope results indicated that the LNBR improved the dispersion of SF in PVC matrix to some extent. The interface adhesion between SF and PVC matrix with adding LNBR was also enhanced. These results suggested that PVC/LNBR‐SF composites exhibited promising potential for practical application in substitute for wood. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study, the effect of maleic anhydride grafted styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) content on mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of polyethylene terephthalate/polycarbonate/halloysite nanotubes (PET/PC/HNTs) nanocomposites has been investigated. Nanocomposites of PET/PC (70 : 30) with 2 phr of HNTs were compounded using the counter rotating twin screw extruder. A series of formulations were prepared by adding 5–20 phr SEBS‐g‐MA to the composites. Incorporation of 5 phr SEBS‐g‐MA into the nanocomposites resulted in the highest tensile and flexural strength. Maximum improvement in the impact strength which is 245% was achieved at 10 phr SEBS‐g‐MA content. The elongation at break increased proportionately with the SEBS‐g‐MA content. However, the tensile and flexural moduli decreased with increasing SEBS‐g‐MA content. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a transition from a brittle fracture to ductile fracture morphology with increasing amount of SEBS‐g‐MA. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the addition of SEBS‐g‐MA into the nanocomposites promoted a better dispersion of HNTs in the matrix. A single glass transition temperature was observed from the differential scanning calorimetry test for compatibilized nanocomposites. Thermogravimetric analysis of PET/PC/HNTs nanocomposites showed high thermal stability at 15 phr SEBS‐g‐MA content. However, on further addition of SEBS‐g‐MA up to 20 phr, thermal stability of the nanocomposites decreased due to the excess amount of SEBS‐g‐MA. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The mechanical performance of different wood flour/polypropylene (PP) composites with interface modifications was compared. Wood flour was incorporated into the matrix after esterification with maleic anhydride (MAN) or without any modification but with the addition of a compatibilizing agent [maleic anhydride–polypropylene copolymer (PPMAN)] to modify the polymer–filler interaction. Composites were prepared by injection molding with different concentrations of wood flour. Mechanical properties (except Young's modulus) were not improved either by the wood flour chemical modification or by the use of PPMAN. However, both compatibilization methods were successful in improving the dispersion of the wood flour in the PP matrix. Creep behavior of composite samples was improved by the addition of PPMAN, whereas the composites prepared from MAN‐treated wood flour showed larger deformations than composites made with untreated particles. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, composites of thermoplastic poly (lactic acid) filled with wood flour (WF) were prepared via melt extrusion. Before that, alkali treatment was performed on WF to improve the properties of the WF/PLA composite materials. The effect of the solution concentrations of NaOH, namely 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0%, on mechanical properties of the composites was evaluated. The results showed that the properties of the composites with treated WF were enhanced greatly compared with that of the untreated composites. The composites had a best improvement in its compatibility and mechanical strength when the concentration of NaOH solution was 5.0%. The brittle fracture of composites showed that the chemical modification of WFs improved the compatibility between the filler and matrix.  相似文献

Recently, graphene and its derivatives have been used to develop polymer composites with improved or multifunctional properties. Exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (GNP) reinforced composite materials based on blend of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polypropylene (PP) compatibilized with styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene‐g‐maleic anhydride is prepared by melt extrusion followed by injection molding. Characterization of the composites' microstructure and morphology was conducted using field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Tensile and impact strengths of test specimens were evaluated and the results showed maximum values at 3phr GNP in both the cases. Morphological studies showed that the GNPs were uniformly dispersed within the matrix. Results from XRD analysis showed uniformly dispersed GNPs, which may not have been substantially exfoliated. FTIR spectroscopy did not show any significant change in the peak positions to suggest definitive chemical interaction between GNP and the matrix. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The main objective of this research was to synthesize a new compatibilisant agent (PVC‐g‐MA), which was grafted from the maleic anhydride on the PVC chains. The presence of maleic anhydride grafting on PVC was made evident by infrared analysis. PVC‐g‐MA was used like compatibilisant to solve the problem of the incompatibility between the hydrophobic polymeric matrix (PVC) and hydrophilic fiber (alfa). Composites samples were prepared with different alfa fiber loading (10, 20, and 30 wt %) and incorporating PVC‐g‐MA (1, 3, and 5 wt %) or PP‐g‐MA (3 wt %). The tensile properties, the thermal stability and the morphology of the composites were investigated. The result indicated that the PVC‐g‐MA increased the interfacial adhesion between the fibers and the polymer matrix and this effect was better than that obtained for the maleated‐polypropylene‐coupled composites. Microstructure analysis of the fractured surfaces of MAPP modified composites confirmed improved interfacial bonding. The addition of alfa and PVC‐g‐MA increased the thermal stability of the composites. The temperature of degradation of the polymer matrix increased about 16°C in comparison to the noncoupled composite, indicating that PVC‐g‐MA improved the thermal stability of the polymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study deals with the effect of water absorption on the physical and mechanical properties of the glass fiber/waste cotton fabric hybrid composites compared to the samples with maleic anhydride (MA) as coupling agent. Water absorption studies were performed for four different soaking times of 100, 250, 500, and 1000 h at room temperature. To clearly understand how long this type of composites can endure without any important loss of mechanical properties, tensile and impact tests were performed after 500 and 1000 h of water immersion time. Results showed that using MA can reduce water sorption values significantly from 5% to 1.5%. In addition, very limited variations in tensile properties were explored even after 1000 h of soaking time by the presence of MA. On the other hand, impact test results revealed that changes in impact strength values are very complex and different mechanisms play a role with respect to the hybrid formulations. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, waste ground rubber tire (WGRT) powder was introduced into thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) to prepare the blends of WGRT powder/TPV. The mechanical, rheological, thermal aging, and dynamic properties of the blends were investigated with respect to the particle size and dosage of WGRT powder. The results showed that tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break, and tensile permanent deformation of the blends increased with the decrease in WGRT particle size and decreased with the dosage of WGRT. The effects of different types and dosages of compatibilizers on mechanical and rheological properties of the blends were studied. The results showed that the compatibilizer PP‐g‐MAH could effectively improve the interfacial compatibility between WGRT and the TPV matrix to enhance the comprehensive properties of blends. The TPV/WGRT/PP‐g‐MAH blends obtained the best overall properties when prepared at the weight ratio 100/30/5. Rheological studies demonstrated that the WGRT/TPV blends represented lower apparent viscosity after PP‐g‐MAH were added, which means that processing performance of the blends was improved by PP‐g‐MAH. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the morphologies of the blends. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 39868.  相似文献

Numerous strategies to improve the fiber–matrix interaction in natural fiber composites (NFCs) and wood polymer composites (WPCs) have been proposed and investigated. We have reviewed literature on polyolefin‐based NFCs and WPCs to get an overview of the current state of the art of compatibilization methods. Those are classified in two categories here, namely fiber‐based strategies and matrix‐based strategies. Although this issue has been covered by several reviews before, as yet no work exists that is focused on polyolefin‐based NFCs and WPCs. Furthermore, a ranking of the compatibilization methods based on their effects on material properties such as tensile/flexural strength and modulus, impact strength and water absorption, allows for an assessment of the efficiency of the various methods. As to the fiber‐based strategies, silanes, maleated polyolefins (MA‐POs), mercerization and acetylation are most thoroughly investigated. Silanes are most effective judged by achievable material property improvements, allowing for increases in tensile and flexural strength of more than 100%. Among the matrix‐based strategies, MA‐POs and isocyanates are most prominent in the literature. The first class enables the more significant material improvements, with reported increases of tensile and flexural strength of 132% and 85%, respectively. While strengths can be enhanced by many compatibilization methods, moduli, and impact strength (notched in particular) are in most cases improved to a lesser degree or even reduced. Especially, the last point calls for further attention, because impact strength is still a weak point of NFCs and WPCs. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2013  相似文献

The main aim of this work is to examine the influence of the contents of nonmetallic printed circuit board (PCB) waste component on the photodegradation of recycled high‐density polyethylene (rHDPE) composites. The properties tested were chemical changes, flexural properties, color stability, water absorption, leaching properties, and crystallinity changes of the composites after exposure to 2,000 h of accelerated weathering. Surface degradation for composites with nonmetallic PCB was less compared to unfilled rHDPE mainly because glass fibers covered almost the whole surface of specimens, acting as a protective layer, thus, slowing down the photodegradation reaction. Incorporation of compatibilizer in rHDPE/PCB composites had played an important role in resisting degradation due to UV exposure. All the composite samples became lighter in the early stages of weathering exposure; however, compatibilized composites showed less lightening and reduction on strength and modulus. Carbonyl index increases with exposure time indicating that the oxidation reaction continuously occurred during the aging process. Incorporation of compatibilizer had successfully reduced the water absorption uptake by the composites and effectively delayed some degradation properties of weathering. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polylactic acid (PLA)‐based nanocomposites comprising two different types of nanofillers, i.e. sepiolite (SEP) and nano calcium carbonate (NCC), were prepared by internal mixing and injection molding. Because of the different aspect ratio, surface area, and surface property of the nanofillers, their effects on the morphological, mechanical, dynamic mechanical, rheological, and thermal properties of the nanocomposites were shown to be very different. NCC demonstrated more uniform particle dispersion and matrix compatibility than did SEP because of the former's surface treatment, thus leading to higher strength and strain‐at‐failure of PLA/NCC composites. On the other hand, larger aspect ratio and surface area of SEP caused higher melt viscosity, stronger shear thinning, and better thermal resistance of PLA/SEP composites. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multi‐monomer grafted copolymers, high‐density polyethylene‐grafted‐maleic anhydride‐styrene (HDPE‐g‐(MAH‐St)) and polyethylene wax‐grafted‐ maleic anhydride ((PE wax)‐g‐MAH), were synthesized and applied to prepare high‐performance high‐density polyethylene (HDPE)/wood flour (WF) composites. Interfacial synergistic compatibilization was studied via the coordinated blending of high‐density polyethylene‐grafted‐maleic anhydride (MPE‐St) and polyethylene wax‐grafted‐ maleic anhydride (MPW) in the high‐density polyethylene (HDPE)/wood flour (WF) composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphology and three‐dimensional WF sketch presented that strong interactive interface between HDPE and WF, formed by MPE‐St with high graft degree of maleic anhydride (MAH) together with the permeating effect of MPW with a low molecular weight. Experimental results demonstrated that HDPE/WF composites compatibilized by MPE‐St/MPW compounds showed significant improvement in mechanical properties, rheological properties, and water resistance than those compatibilized by MPE, MPE‐St or MPW separately and the uncompatibilized composites. The mass ratio of MPE‐St/MPW for optimizing the HDPE/WF composites was 5:1. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133, 42958.  相似文献

Poly(propylene‐co‐ethylene) composites with rice husk were prepared in a corotating intermeshing twin‐screw extruder using four different coupling agents. While modified maleic anhydrides such as maleated polypropylene (MAPP) and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) are commonly used as compatibilizers to improve interfacial adhesion between lignocellulosic filler and matrix, in this study, polypropylene grafted with acid comonomer (CAPP) and high‐density polyethylene grafted with acid comonomer (CAPE) were also used. The morphologies and the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning analysis, tensile and impact tests. The results indicate that the base resin of the compatibilizer is an important factor in determining the effectiveness of compatibilizers for composites. Composites with PP‐based compatibilizers are more effective than PE‐based compatibilizers due to the improved wetting of the former compatibilizer in the matrix polymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, polymer composites based on polypropylene (PP) matrix reinforced with short glass fibers type E (GF‐type E) were obtained. However, to ensure good interfacial adhesion and stress transfer across the interface, the influence of the chemical functionalization of the phases was analyzed. The better interfacial adhesion is assured by the use of maleic anhydride grafted PP and amino‐functionalized GF. The obtained composite materials were tested from the point of view of composition, morphology, and mechanical properties. It can conclude that the chemical functionalization of the two phases is beneficial from the point of view of compatibility of the phases and consequently higher mechanical properties are obtained. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
