Error-free operation of a wavelength conversion laser diode (WCLD) is demonstrated. The optical input/output interface scheme of the WCLD has been examined and wavelength switching at a data rate of 125 Mbit/s has been experimented on. Repeated wavelength conversion of 10 Gbit/s pseudorandom non-return-to-zero signals is demonstrated using superstructure grating distributed Bragg reflector lasers operating in the 1.55-μm wavelength region. Error-free and very low-power-penalty wavelength conversion can be achieved in both first and second wavelength conversion for a fixed converted wavelength over a broad wavelength range from 1.486 to 1.573 μm (about 90-nm wide). The power penalty of the transmitted signal light through the first wavelength conversion device increases when the converted wavelength is switched from 1.544 to 1.573 μm periodically at a repetition frequency of 40 MHz. Proposed and demonstrated is a novel scheme of a dual-channel-output all-optical logic AND gate. We have used a packaged high-speed Ti:LiNbO3 directional coupler switch to externally modulate a CW-operated cleaved-coupled-cavity laser oscillating at 1.3 ?m wavelength. The performance of the modulator was evaluated by measuring bit error rates for the dominant mode of the laser using a monochromator as a selective bandpass filter. Error-free encoding was achieved for a non-return-to-zero rate of 1.5 Gbit/s. This result and observation of the optical spectrum demonstrate that the external modulation did not degrade the CW characteristics of the laser.  相似文献

The virtually unlimited bandwidth of optical fibers has caused a great increase in data transmission speed over the past decade and, hence, stimulated high-demand multimedia services. Nowadays, opto-electronic conversion is still required at each network node to process the incoming signal. However, when the single channel bit rate increases beyond electronic speed limit, optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) becomes a forced choice, and all-optical processing must be performed to extract the information from the incoming packet. In this paper the state of art, the advantages and drawbacks of the OTDM technology will be discussed in order to highlight its potentialities in different application scenarios for optical communications networks, and its perspectives in different temporal horizons. In detail, a recent experiment of a 160 Gbit/s OTDM system is presented. Furthermore, a photonic node architecture suitable for optical packet switching networks is proposed, and possible solutions for the implementation of all the required subsystems are presented and compared in order to optimize the node performance. In particular innovative schemes for optical add/drop multiplexer, optical logic gates, optical switches, and optical flip-flop are introduced with a particular emphasis on emerging nonlinear materials and enabling technologies.  相似文献

A wavelength converter is presented that is made out of a semiconductor optical amplifier and an optical bandpass filter. Error-free inverted wavelength conversion is demonstrated at a bitrate of 80 Gbit/s. This approach can be exploited at higher bitrates. A clear open eye indicating error-free wavelength conversion at 160 Gbit/s is also presented. This wavelength converter has a simple configuration and allows photonic integration.  相似文献
