In this paper, we present a federated query processing approach to evaluate queries on an Object-Oriented (OO) federated database. This approach has been designed and implemented in the OO-Myriad project, which is an OO extension to the Myriad FDBS researchmyriad:94. Since data integration is performed as part of federated query processing, we have proposed outerjoin, outer-difference and generalized attribute derivation operations together with the traditional relational operations, to be used for integration purposes. To define an OO federated database as a virtual view on multiple OO export databases, we adopt a database mapping strategy that systematically derives each of the class extents, deep class extents and relationships of the federated database using an operator tree consisting of the integration operations. By augmenting federated database queries with this algebraic mapping information, query execution plans can be generated. Based on the original Myriad query processing framework, we have realized the proposed OO federated query processing approach in the OO-Myriad prototype.  相似文献

Transforming queries for efficient execution is particularly important in federated database systems since a more efficient execution plan can require many fewer data requests to be sent to the component databases. Also, it is important to do as much as possible of the selection and processing close to where the data are stored, making best use of facilities provided by the federation's component database management systems. In this paper we address the problem of processing complex queries including quantifiers, which have to be executed against different databases in an expanding heterogeneous federation. This is done by transforming queries within a mediator for global query improvement, and within wrappers to make the best use of the query processing capabilities of external databases. Our approach is based on pattern matching and query rewriting. We introduce a high level language for expressing rewrite rules declaratively, and demonstrate the use and flexibility of such rules in improving query performance for existentially quantified subqueries. Extensions to this language that allow generic rewrite rules to be expressed are also presented. The value of performing final transformations within a wrapper for a given remote database is shown in several examples that use AMOS II—an SQL3-like system.  相似文献

异构数据源集成系统旨在为用户提供一个一致的访问接口,由于参与集成的各数据源不仅高度自治、模式各异、更新频繁,而且查询功能有各自特殊的限制,给查询处理过程中数据源定位和查询优化造成一定的困难。本文在分析异构集成系统特征和功能需求的基础上,提出一种基于KQML的数据源能力描述框架,为各数据源灵活动态的发布自身能力提供保证。进而通过形式化的规范描述刻画数据源的结构特征和行为特征,为定位查询相关数据源奠定基础.并有助于全局查询处理器对查询计划进行优化,缩减查询的搜索空间,提高查询效率。  相似文献

The rapid increase in end-user computing calls into question the suitability of existing database query languages (DBQLs). Because the typical DB end-user is not a DB specialist, it is essential that DBQLs use concepts that are as close as possible to those in the end-users’ cognitive mental model and adopt interface techniques that are suited to end-users’ abilities. Concept-based query languages are well suited for this. This realization has motivated further research in conceptual, or semantic, query approaches. However, the primary focus in this field has been on semantic query optimization, not on query formulation. In this study, we address ourselves to the problem of formulation of queries using concepts. We propose a concept-based query language, called the conceptual query language (CQL), which allows for the conceptual abstraction of database queries and exploits the rich semantics of data models to ease and facilitate query formulation.The CQL approach uses the relationship semantics of semantic data models to render transparent the technical complexities of existing DB query languages. Association semantics are also used to automatically construct query graphs and pseudo-natural language explanations of queries, and to generate SQL codes. A set theoretic formalism for conceptual queries is developed and used. This paper discusses the design of CQL, its expressive power, its implementation, and the strategies for CQL query processing. The implementation of a CQL prototype is briefly discussed in this paper. User experiments were carried out extensively and showed the advantage of CQL over alternative languages such as SQL.  相似文献

Nowadays, two of the main challenges involving spatio-temporal databases concern the integration of their spatial and temporal features to store and query spatial objects changing over time, and the development of a simple and friendly language to query spatio-temporal data. In this paper we gather these two challenges by proposing Moving GeoPQL, a language defined in order to express spatio-temporal queries, extending the Geographical Pictorial Query language (GeoPQL). The proposed evolution is based on the concept of temporal layer that allows specifying the spatial configuration of moving objects in a time interval. More layers allow representing changes in terms of spatial configurations. Some examples of query formulation and system operation are described in the article. Finally, an experiment has been carried out for evaluating the usability of the Moving GeoPQL system. Results of this experiment showed that it facilitates the spatio-temporal query formulation since it is more user-friendly and ease to use compared to textual query languages.  相似文献

AMOS is a mediator system that supports passive (non-intrusive) integration of data from heterogeneous and autonomous data sources. It is based on a functional data model and a declarative functional query language AMOSQL. Foreign data sources, e.g., relational databases, text files, or other types of data sources can be wrapped with AMOS mediators, making them accessible through AMOSQL. AMOS mediators can communicate among each other through the multi-database constructs of AMOSQL that allow definition of functional queries and OO views accessing other AMOS servers. The integrated views can contain both functions and types derived from the data sources. Furthermore, local data associated with these view definitions may be stored in the mediator database. This paper describes AMOS' multi-database query facilities and their optimization techniques. Calculus-based function transformations are used to generate minimal query expressions before the query decomposition and cost-based algebraic optimization steps take place. Object identifier (OID) generation is used for correctly representing derived objects in the mediators. A selective OID generation mechanism avoids overhead by generating in the mediator OIDs only for those derived objects that are either needed during the processing of a query or have associated local data in the mediator database. The validity of the derived objects that are assigned OIDs and the completeness of queries to the views are guaranteed by system generated predicates added to the queries.  相似文献

This paper presents an approach to query decomposition in a multidatabase environment. The unique aspect of this approach is that it is based on performing transformations over an object algebra that can be used as the basis for a global query language. In the paper, we first present our multidatabase environment and semantic framework, where a global conceptual schema based on the Object Data Management Group standard encompasses the information from heterogeneous data sources that include relational databases as well as object-oriented databases and flat file sources. The meta-data about the global schema is enhanced with information about virtual classes as well as virtual relationships and inheritance hierarchies that exist between multiple sources. The AQUA object algebra is used as the formal foundation for manipulation of the query expression over the multidatabase. AQUA is enhanced with distribution operators for dealing with data distribution issues. During query decomposition we perform an extensive analysis of traversals for path expressions that involve virtual relationships and hierarchies for access to several heterogeneous sources. The distribution operators defined in algebraic terms enhance the global algebra expression with semantic information about the structure, distribution, and localization of the data sources relevant to the solution of the query. By using an object algebra as the basis for query processing, we are able to define algebraic transformations and exploit rewriting techniques during the decomposition phase. Our use of an object algebra also provides a formal and uniform representation for dealing with an object-oriented approach to multidatabase query processing. As part of our query processing discussion, we include an overview of a global object identification approach for relating semantically equivalent objects from diverse data sources, illustrating how knowledge about global object identity is used in the decomposition and assembly processes.  相似文献

The problem of decentralized data sharing, which is relevant to a wide range of applications, is still a source of major theoretical and practical challenges, in spite of many years of sustained research. In this paper we focus on the challenge of efficiency of query evaluation in information integration systems that use the global-as-view approach, with the objective of developing query-processing strategies that would be widely applicable and easy to implement in real-life applications. Our algorithms take into account important features of today’s data sharing applications: XML as likely interface or representation for data sources; the potential for information overlap across data sources; and the need for inter-source processing, as in joins of data across sources. The focus of this paper is on performance-related characteristics of several alternative approaches that we propose for efficient query processing in information integration, including an approach that uses materialized restructured views. We use synthetic and real-life datasets in our implementation of an information integration system shell to provide experimental results that demonstrate that our algorithms are efficient and competitive in the information integration setting. In addition, our experimental results allow us to make context-specific recommendations on selecting query-processing approaches from our proposed alternatives. As such, our approaches could form a basis for scalable query processing in information integration and interoperability in many practical settings.  相似文献

查询重写是数据库研究的一个基本问题,它和查询优化,数据仓库,数据集成,语义缓存等数据库问题密切相关,为提高集成系统的查询效率,系统选择提交频率较高的XML查询物化为中间层视图,用户提交查询后,系统尽可能利用中间视图层中视图,而不是访问数据源来回答查询,这个问题实际可以归结为半结构化查询重写问题,考虑到中间视图层空间的有限性,已有视图应当尽可能回答更多的查询,传统查询重写方法有考虑半结构化数据之间的约束,而根据约束可以等价变换查询,从而提高中间视图层中的表达能力,提出了一种新的半结构化查询重写的方法,该方法在保证算法正确性和完备性的基础上,利用上半结构化数据中的约束,尤其是XML文件中的路径依赖,来增强中间层物化视图的表达能力,理论分析和初步原型实验证明方法的有效性。  相似文献

In this paper, we present both the theoretical framework and a prototype of a query processing facility that supports the exploration and query of databases from a mobile computer through the manipulation of icons. Icons are particularly suitable for mobile computing since they can be manipulated without typing. The facility requires no special knowledge of the location or the content of the remote database nor understanding of the details of the database schema. Its iconic query language involves no path specification in composing a query. The query facility provides metaquery tools that assist in the formulation of complete queries in an incremental manner on the mobile computer and without involving access to the actual data in the remote database. By not requiring constant access and caching of the actual data, it is able to effectively cope with the inherent limitations in memory and battery life on the mobile computer, disconnections and restricted communication bandwidth, and the high monetary cost of wireless communication.Recommended by: Daniel Barbara, Ravi Jain and Narayanan Krishnakumar  相似文献

In this work we present an architecture for XML‐based mediator systems and a framework for helping systems developers in the construction of mediator‐services for the integration of heterogeneous data sources. A unique feature of our architecture is its capability to manage (proprietary) user's software tools and algorithms, modelled as Extended Value Added Services (EVASs), and integrated in the data flow. The mediator offers a view of the system as a single data source where EVASs are readily available for enhancing query processing. A Web‐based graphic interface has been developed to allow dynamic and flexible EVASs inter‐connection, thus creating complex distributed bioinformatics machines. The feasibility and usefulness of our ideas has been validated by the development of a mediator system (Bio‐Broker) and by a diverse set of applications aimed at combining gene expression data with genomic, sequence‐based and structural information, so as to provide a general, transparent and powerful solution that integrates data analysis tools and algorithms. In this paper, a visual algebra and the relative pictorial query language (PQL) for geographic information systems (GIS) are proposed and discussed. The base data structure of the object oriented model for geographical data is defined and the symbolic features used in the PQL are described. The algebra operators are formally defined, besides their properties and applicability. The use of the symbolic features to express the queries is illustrated, as well as the possible pictorial operations are considered. The used interface is part of the Scenario GIS, developed using an object-oriented environment. This PQL makes easier the formulation of a complex query and simplifies user approach to the system, maintaining a strong expressive power. Finally, an example of query and its pictorial composition on the screen is shown.  相似文献

The ideal query language for a knowledge base will probably never be found: easy formulation and easy evaluation of queries are two conflicting goals. Easy formulation asks for a flexible, expressive language near to human language or gestures. Easy evaluation of queries requires an effective mapping to machine code, which computes the correct answer in a finite number of steps. This article approaches the problem by a query language with three faces. The first projects queries to concepts of the knowledge representation language KL-One for easy formulation and readability. The second presents queries as rules of a deductive database with fixpoint semantics. The third presents queries as classes whose instances are the materialized answer (view) to the query. The methods for maintaining and updating the views are compiled from their deductive interpretation.  相似文献

Compilers and optimizers for declarative query languages use some form of intermediate language to represent user-level queries. The advent of compositional query languages for orthogonal type systems (e.g., OQL) calls for internal query representations beyond extensions of relational algebra. This work adopts a view of query processing which is greatly influenced by ideas from the functional programming domain. A uniform formal framework is presented which covers all query translation phases, including user-level query language compilation, query optimization, and execution plan generation. We pursue the type-based design—based on initial algebras—of a core functional language which is then developed into an intermediate representation that fits the needs of advanced query processing. Based on the principle of structural recursion we extend the language by monad comprehensions (which provide us with a calculus-style sublanguage that proves to be useful during the optimization of nested queries) and combinators (abstractions of the query operators implemented by the underlying target query engine). Due to its functional nature, the language is susceptible to program transformation techniques that were developed by the functional programming as well as the functional data model communities. We show how database query processing can substantially benefit from these techniques.  相似文献
