Epidemiology, risk factors and prophylaxis of venous thrombo-embolism in obstetrics and gynaecology

The classical psychoanalytic concept of the one-person treatment model and its assumptions concerning psychic reality are compared with the contemporary two-person model, subsumed under the concept of "alterity" (otherness). The classical model of unconscious mental life is explored in terms of the principles of "autochthony" (signifying the fantasy that self and object are created entirely from and by the self) and "cosmogony" (an aspect of primary and secondary processes that accounts for the creation of a personal and an objective world-view). Autochthony and cosmogony are subsumed under the category of "creationism." I discuss why I identify these three phenomena by these relatively unused terms.     

Review of Wounded by reality: Understanding and treating adult onset trauma.

Reviews the book, Wounded by reality: Understanding and treating adult onset trauma by Ghislaine Boulanger (see record 2007-04674-000). In this book, Boulanger closes the circle on psychoanalytic speculation about the significance of trauma to personality, and goes beyond this to add significantly to both theory and clinical practice. Rado's 1925 paper on dismissing abreaction for understanding and treating the effects of adult onset trauma, with Freud's agreement, pushed the psychoanalytic gaze inward to memories of past trauma (Etchegoyen, 1991, p. 446). It was assumed that childhood trauma determined the reactions to later ones in adulthood. The very concept of trauma was diluted to include sudden hardship or confusion, leaving adult onset horror in an undifferentiated place on the continuum of human misfortune. In this book, there is no doubt. Adults are traumatized when they face imminent and seemingly inescapable death. This book is the sixth in a series of books called "Psychoanalysis in a New Key" that Donnel Stern is editing for The Analytic Press. That new key is relational thinking. Boulanger uses it along with the latest information from neuroscience to forge a special new key for unlocking the frozen affect of adults who have survived only physically from the most extreme of trauma. A Psychometric Analysis of the "Divide and Conquer" Principle in Multicriteria Decision Making

The principle of "Divide and Conquer" (DAC) suggests that: (1) complex decision problems should be decomposed into smaller, more manageable parts and (2) these smaller parts should be logically aggregated to derive an overall value for each alternative. Typically, decompositional procedures have been compared to holistic evaluations that require decision makers to simultaneously consider all of the relevant attributes in the evaluation of the objects under consideration. These comparisons between decompositional and holistic judgments have primarily used a variant of Multiattribute Utility Theory (MAUT). We presented a general experimental framework that allows for a more extensive assessment of the DAC principle, as well as the effects of decision complexity on both holistic and decompositional procedures. We illustrate this approach with a study that uses the Simple Multiattribute Rating Technique with Swing Weights (SMARTS; Edwards & Barron, 1994) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP; Saaty, 1980). We report data comparing the convergent validity (e.g the agreement between decompositional and holistic strategies) and the temporal stability for decompositional and holistic judgments on a variety of dependent measures. Decision complexity did not significantly affect the correspondence between decompositional and holistic judgments for both SMARTS and AHP judgments. Results from an ordinal measure of temporal stability indicated the DAC principle was violated for the AHP judgments. For a linear measure of temporal stability, trends in the data indicated that the predicted effects of decision complexity on the DAC principle was violated for the SMARTS judgments.
