Surveyed the educational backgrounds and related postdoctoral experiences of 122 current instructors of clinical neuropsychology in American Psychological Association (APA)-approved internship programs to determine how closely their training approximated the minimal standards for practitioners of clinical neuropsychology proposed by the International Neuropsychological Society (INS)/Division 40 of the APA. Overall, the training of internship instructors in clinical neuropsychology was better than that reported in a previous survey of predoctoral instructors. Findings suggest a need for further development of formal postdoctoral training experiences in clinical neuropsychology as a means of fulfilling the spirit of the INS training guidelines. Survey data from 98 American Psychological Association (APA)-approved or conditionally APA-approved internship programs indicated that 86 offered training in neuropsychology. Of these, 30 indicated that they admitted students who wished to specialize in clinical neuropsychology. Information on the type of neuropsychological training involved, the length of training, type of tests given, and the number of cases seen by the student are reported. The necessity of serving a year-long internship has become an important issue in the training of counseling psychologists. This is especially true for anyone who might be interested in obtaining employment in a college or university counseling center. This particular issue has serious implications for prospective interns who are being trained in non-APA-approved counseling psychology programs who wish to be employed in college and university counseling centers. Currently, there are 25 centers that have active counseling psychology internship training programs, and although only half of them are APA-approved now, the majority of them will be in the near future (Dorn, 1984). If nothing else, they will be facing a restrictive environment when it comes to the development of their professional careers as well as in obtaining an internship in a setting that will be more positively regarded by prospective counseling center employers. In an effort to fully clarify the issue of whether APA-approved counseling psychology internship sites in college and university counseling centers are selecting candidates from non-APA-approved counseling psychology training sites, a brief questionnaire was mailed to each individual who was serving an internship in one of the 13 fully or provisionally APA-approved college and university counseling center sites (APA, 1981) during the 1981-1982 academic year. The results of this survey indicate that although the majority of counseling psychology interns selected by these sites are from APA-approved training programs, intern applicants from non-APA-approved training programs do have an opportunity to serve an APA-approved internship in one of these sites. These results should not be interpreted optimistically, however. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Administered a questionnaire to 103 American Psychological Association approved internship training facility directors to assess behavior modification training opportunities. Results are presented in a tabular format indicating program name, number of psychology staff, their orientations, number of behavioral psychologists, didactic training availability, practice opportunities, and supervision opportunities. Results indicate that opportunities do exist for clinical training in behavior modification at the internship level. Behavior modification is generally perceived as only one aspect of the training necessary for the well-rounded clinician. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Describes a service delivery system with a group personal counseling emphasis, based on the authors' 2 yrs of experience at a university counseling center. The local background and rationale for this system are discussed, and the practical logistics, the operational policies, and the group ground rules are presented. Utilization data are summarized: 36% of all clients and 88% of clients with 8 or more sessions were group members; groups typically grew to 9 clients and had 60% attendance. Results for a self-report outcome survey of 128 students are exemplified by the 95.1% who reported some level of improvement and the 92.2% who rated their psychologist "very" to "exceptionally effective." Questionnaires were mailed to the clinical training directors of 110 American Psychological Association-approved internship centers. Results from 87 completed and returned questionnaires indicate significant increases in reported trainee interest and program emphasis in group therapy during the past 5 yrs. However, although the number of course offerings reportedly increased significantly, the increase in the number of both staff and supervised practicums in group forms of intervention was not significant. Findings are compared with the results of an earlier survey of training opportunities in group treatment methods among doctoral programs. It is concluded that present training opportunities in group interventions are on the rise, but they still fall far short of providing trainees with all of the clinical skills necessary to meet the increasing demands for service in the area of group interventions. Updates data and provides information on present salaries of clinical psychologists working in internship-training centers. Salary schedules from 80 training centers approved for predoctoral internship training in clinical or counseling psychology indicate that federally-funded training centers provide the highest salaries for psychologists, and charity-supported agencies and those located in the Northeast provide the lowest salaries. Predicted that 3 sets of variables would discriminate between clients who returned for scheduled appointments following intake and clients who did not: (a) client perception of the intake counselor as expert, attractive, and trustworthy; (b) agreement of client and counselor on the presenting problem; and (c) client satisfaction with the intake interview. To test this prediction, 134 university students (mean age 22.9 yrs) completed the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire, a counselor rating form, and a client problem identification questionnaire after an intake interview. 30 of these Ss dropped out of counseling and 104 continued. It was found that client satisfaction and perceptions of trustworthiness and expertness were related to Ss' returning for scheduled appointments. No differences between continuers and dropouts were found with respect to client perceptions of counselor attractiveness or client–counselor agreement on problem identification. On the recommendation of the Committee on Evaluation, the Education and Training Board has recommended, and the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association has approved the doctoral programs in clinical psychology and in counseling psychology that are conducted by the institutions listed below. In the institutions listed, the approved programs are directed by the department of psychology unless otherwise indicated. Programs that have not requested evaluation and programs that have been evaluated but not approved are not included in the list. The criteria for evaluating these programs can be obtained from the Executive Secretary of the Education and Training Board. Inclusion of an institution in these lists indicates approval of doctoral programs in clinical psychology and in counseling psychology only. Inclusion or noninclusion carries no implications for other graduate programs in psychology or for programs of graduate education in other disciplines. The institutions listed below have been reported to the United States Public Health Service, to the Veterans Administration, and to the Surgeon General's Office, Department of the Army, as conducting at the present time approved programs of doctoral training in the areas indicated. Presents a list of agencies offering internships approved for doctoral training in professional psychology by the American Psychological Association's Committee on Accreditation. The current criteria for accreditation of internship training programs no longer make the distinction between clinical and counseling internship programs; therefore, the separate listing of approved programs by professional specialty has been dropped.
