The Adaptive Building Initiative: The Functional Aesthetic of Adaptivity

Ziggy Drozdowski, Director of Technology at Hoberman Associates in New York, describes the Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI), a collaboration with engineers Buro Happold that is conceived to catalyse innovation in environmental building performance. The emphasis here is on developing technologies that both architects and engineers can engage with rather than products per se, ensuring that ‘the design and the technology layers employed are intertwined into one dynamic system’. This is exemplified by the initiative's development of the Tessellate™ adaptive facade system that both interacts with and helps control incident sunlight. Digital Cities

Code, it would seem, is everywhere. We are beginning to understand that much of our natural environment is based on rule-based behaviours, from the emergent swarm intelligence of flocks of birds and schools of fish, to the complex patterns of snowflakes, ferns, seashells and zebra skins. And nothing escapes. Not even the human body. The human genome is being mapped out and sequenced by scientists to provide a genetic blueprint of human life itself. Fabricating Design: A Revolution of Choice

Berlin-based practice Barkow Leibinger has become synonymous with expertise in digital fabrication. For 12 years, the firm has been engaged in designing buildings for machine-tool company Trumpf in Stuttgart - a relationship that has given the firm remarkable insights into the laser cutting of sheet metal. Here, Frank Barkow describes the fruitful research that the studio has undertaken in laser cutting as well as two innovative projects that have resulted from it. He explains why a new technology like that of digital fabrication must be for architects by necessity ‘a revolution of choice’ - a speculation on where best to exploit new possibilities, albeit informed by research and experimentation. Pierre Thibault

At a time when little in architectural design seems like uncharted territory, Brian Carter, Professor and Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Buffalo, The State University of New York, goes northeast to Quebec and encounters the work of architectural explorer Pierre Thibault. He describes how Thibault sets out to develop projects in some of the most ‘remote, expansive and sparsely settled’ areas of the region, responding afresh to the landscape and its indigenous culture. New Polish architecture - seeking to establish order?

Poland is a ‘shifting country’. In the postwar era it shifted geographically - 300 kilometres (186 miles) to the west - and since 1989 it has been undergoing enormous political and economic transformations. It is one of the leading ex-Soviet bloc economies. Such huge changes, however, come at a price. The combined expiration of a comprehensive planning system and excessive bureaucracy provides difficult and uncertain conditions for architects. Marta A Urbanska explains how a generation of young, enterprising Polish architects have equipped themselves to deal with this ‘quicksand-like situation’ by becoming great improvisers and jacks of all trades, as savvy about development, planning and finance as they are about design. A system of management control information for architects

The authors, D.J. Carter, David Cheetham and John Lewis of the School of Architecture, University of Liverpool, describe a study of the information flow system from site to supervising officer on a number of case study building contracts. The study uses techniques of system analysis to determine existing methods by which architects obtain information necessary for the administration of building contracts for hospitals.     

Towards a New Relationship with Nature: Research and Regenerative Design in Architecture

Here Peter Busby, Michael Driedger and Max Richter of Perkins+Will Canada (P+W) describe the office's core focus on ‘regenerative design’: an approach where each operation in a building's construction is measured by its positive impact on human and natural systems. This is supported by an in-house research team of architects, engineers and sustainability strategists that concentrates on the advancement of sustainable building practices. They describe how this is played out in projects such as the Living with Lakes Centre at Laurentian University in Sudbury and the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre, Vancouver. Urban American Landscape

Landscape architecture has emerged from the deep sleep it entered during the Modernist period and remained in for most of the 20th century. Now, valued because of the environmental movement, stimulated by collaborations with architects and artists, and presented with opportunities to transform abandoned industrial sites, landscape architects are enthusiastically producing new kinds of parks on brownfields, along waterfronts, even on rooftops and in garbage dumps. Permanence and Change

Mark Burry is Professor of Urban Futures at the University of Melbourne. He is renowned internationally for his work employing digital techniques to advance the completion of Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Família in Barcelona. What happens, though, when architects shift the focus from designing buildings to cities? Donald Bates , Chair of Architectural Design at the University of Melbourne and Director of LAB Architecture Studio, asks Burry this question about scalability and discusses with him further the viability of mass customisation in an urban context.     

Optioneering: A New Basis for Engagement Between Architects and Their Collaborators

Conventionally, architects are somewhat tardy when inviting engineers to join their projects. By only introducing consulting engineers to participate in the later stages of the design process, engineers are commonly assigned a fixing role. This provides little opportunity for creative engineering solutions at the generative stage. Optioneering, a new business management model, however, offers the possibility of a new collaborative method for interaction between designers and their partners. Dominik Holzer and Steven Downing describe how a research project between the Spatial Information Research Laboratory (SIAL) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the engineering firm Arup investigated the capability of this new form of collaboration.
