New designs of precast bridge parapets made with fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) were developed using nonlinear finite-element calculations. Specific properties of high- and ultrahigh-performance FRC were exploited in these designs. The conventional reinforcement required in the FRC precast parapets varied from 0 to 50% when compared with a reference built-on-site parapet. An extensive experimental program was carried out to verify the performance of the FRC precast parapets. The parapet mechanical behavior was established under quasi-static tests and under dynamic loading replicating a vehicle impact. The results of the quasi-static tests indicate that precast FRC parapets possess the required strength and have ductility comparable to reference parapets. Quasi-static tests carried out after the dynamic tests indicate that the residual strength of the parapets corresponds to 75 to 100% of their original capacity. The finite-element model adopted in the project satisfactorily reproduced the strength, stiffness, and failure mode of the parapets. Finally, the system efficiency of precast FRC parapets was established for their application in a typical urban bridge project, considering the mechanical performance, the fabrication costs, and the required installation time.  相似文献

This paper presents the analytical modeling, modal testing, and finite-element model updating for a two-span masonry arch bridge. An Ottoman masonry arch bridge built in the 19th century and located at Camlihemsin, Rize, Turkey is selected as an example. Analytical modal analysis is performed on the developed 3D finite-element model of the bridge to obtain dynamic characteristics. The ambient vibration tests are conducted under natural excitation such as human walking. The operational modal analysis is carried out using peak picking method in the frequency domain and stochastic subspace identification method in the time domain, and dynamic characteristics (natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios) are determined experimentally. Finite-element model of the bridge is updated to minimize the differences between analytically and experimentally estimated dynamic characteristics by changing boundary conditions. At the end of the study, maximum differences in the natural frequencies are reduced on average from 18 to 7% and a good agreement is found between analytical and experimental dynamic characteristics after finite-element model updating.  相似文献

Computation of the dynamic stress of long suspension bridges under multiloadings is essential for either the strength or fatigue assessment of the bridge. This paper presents a framework for dynamic stress analysis of long suspension bridges under wind, railway, and highway loadings. The bridge, trains, and road vehicles are respectively modeled using the finite-element method (FEM). The connections between the bridge and trains and between the bridge and road vehicles are respectively considered in terms of wheel-rail and tire-road surface contact conditions. The spatial distributions of both buffeting forces and self-excited forces over the bridge deck surface are considered. The Tsing Ma suspension bridge and the field measurement data recorded by a wind and structural health monitoring system (WASHMS) installed in the bridge are utilized as a case study to examine the proposed framework. The information on the concerned loadings measured by the WASHMS is taken as inputs for the computation simulation, and the computed stress responses are compared with the measured ones. The results show that running trains play a predominant role in bridge stress responses compared with running road vehicles and fluctuating wind loading.  相似文献

This paper discusses the application of system identification of a highway bridge using finite-element method and ambient-vibration testing. The posttensioned Gülburnu Highway Bridge located on the Giresun-Espiye state highway was selected as a case study. A finite-element model of the bridge was developed using SAP2000 software, and dynamic characteristics were obtained analytically. During the test, sources of ambient excitations were provided by the traffic effects over the bridge. Ambient-vibration tests were applied to the bridge to identify dynamic characteristics. The selection of measurement time, frequency span, and effective mode number was considered from similar studies in the literature. Two output-only system identification methods, enhanced frequency domain decomposition and stochastic subspace identification, were used to estimate the dynamic characteristics of the bridge experimentally. The accuracy and efficiency of both methods were investigated and compared with finite-element results. Results suggest that ambient-vibration measurements are sufficient to identify structural modes with a low range of natural frequencies. In addition, the dynamic characteristics obtained from the finite-element model of the bridge have a good correlation with experimental frequencies and mode shapes.  相似文献

This paper describes an arch type steel footbridge, its analytical modeling, modal testing, finite-element model updating, and dynamic analysis. A modern steel footbridge which has an arch type structural system and is located on the Karadeniz coast road in Trabzon, Turkey is selected as an application. An analytical modal analysis is performed on the developed three-dimensional finite-element model of footbridge to provide analytical frequencies and mode shapes. Field ambient vibration tests on the footbridge deck under natural excitation such as human walking and traffic loads are conducted. The output-only modal parameter identification is carried out by using peak picking of the average normalized power spectral densities in the frequency domain and stochastic subspace identification in the time domain, and dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios are determined. The finite-element model of the footbridge is updated to minimize the differences between analytically and experimentally estimated modal properties by changing some uncertain modeling parameters such as material properties. Dynamic analyses of the footbridge before and after finite-element model updating are performed using the 1992 Erzincan earthquake record. At the end of the study, maximum differences in the natural frequencies are reduced from 22 to only 5% and good agreement is found between analytical and experimental dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes by model updating. Also, maximum displacements and principal stresses before and after model updating are compared with each other.  相似文献

A framework is presented for predicting the dynamic response of long suspension bridges to high winds and running trains. A three-dimensional finite-element model is used to represent a suspension bridge. Wind forces acting on the bridge, including both buffeting and self-excited forces, are generated in the time domain using a fast spectral representation method and measured aerodynamic coefficients and flutter derivatives. Each 4-axle vehicle in a train is modeled by a 27-degrees-of-freedom dynamic system. The dynamic interaction between the bridge and train is realized through the contact forces between the wheels and track. By applying a mode superposition technique to the bridge only and taking the measured track irregularities as known quantities, the number of degrees of freedom of the bridge-train system is significantly reduced and the coupled equations of motion are efficiently solved. The proposed formulation is then applied to a real wind-excited long suspension bridge carrying a railway inside the bridge deck of a closed cross section. The results show that the formulation presented in this paper can predict the dynamic response of the coupled bridge-train systems under fluctuating winds. The extent of interaction between the bridge and train depends on wind speed and train speed.  相似文献

Several full-scale load tests were performed on a selected Florida highway bridge. The bridge was dynamically excited by two fully loaded trucks, and the strain, acceleration, and displacement at selected points were recorded for the investigation of the bridge’s dynamic response. Experimental data were compared with simplified vehicle and bridge finite-element models. The vehicle was represented as a three-dimensional mass–spring–damper system with 11?degrees of freedom, and the bridge was modeled as a combination of plate and beam elements that characterize the slab and girders, respectively. The equations of motion were formulated with physical components for the vehicle and modal components for the bridge. The coupled equations were solved using a central difference method. It was found that the numerical analysis matched well with the experimental data and was used to successfully explain critical dynamic phenomena observed during the testing. Impact factors for this tested bridge were thoroughly investigated by using these models.  相似文献

The results from a parametric study on the impact factors for 180 curved continuous composite multiple-box girder bridges are presented. Expressions for the impact factors for tangential flexural stresses, deflection, shear forces and reactions are deduced for AASHTO truck loading. The finite-element method was utilized to model the bridges as three-dimensional structures. The vehicle axle used in the analysis was simulated as a pair of concentrated forces moving along the concrete deck in a circumferential path with a constant speed. The effects of bridge configurations, loading positions, and vehicle speed on the impact factors were examined. Bridge configurations included span length, span-to-radius of curvature ratio, number of lanes, and number of boxes. The effect of the mass of the vehicle on the dynamic response of the bridges is also investigated. The data generated from the parametric study and the deduced expressions for the impact factors would enable bridge engineers to design curved continuous composite multiple-box girder bridges more reliably and economically.  相似文献

The paper presents an experimental study of the actual dynamic effects for a preselected typical highway bridge. Knowledge of the dynamic impact factors is important for accurate determination of the ultimate load capacity and performance assessment of constructed bridges. Static and dynamic field tests were performed on a two-lane concrete highway bridge built in 1999 on U.S. 90 in northwest Florida. During the tests, one or two fully loaded trucks crossed over the bridge, which was instrumented with strain gauges, accelerometers, and displacement transducers. A wooden plank was placed across the lanes for some runs to trigger extensive dynamic vibration and to simulate poor road surface conditions. Data collected from the tests were used for comprehensive assessment of the bridge under dynamic loading. Impact factors obtained from the tests with higher speeds were found larger than corresponding values recommended by bridge codes. Analysis revealed that stiff vehicle suspension, road surface imperfection, and “bouncing” of the truck loading contributed to the high impact factors. Experimental data were also used for validation of the finite-element models developed for the vehicle–bridge system.  相似文献

A group of five full-depth male–female shear key specimens were match cast and tested to examine the shear capacity of epoxy-jointed single keys. Another group of four specimens were match cast using full-scale dimensions of a segmental construction bridge deck system for testing the fatigue and water tightness at a segment joint. Both cold-weather and hot-weather epoxy types were used to join the specimens. In addition to the experimental testing, finite-element analysis was also used to model the static response of the joint specimens. The observed failure mode of all shear-key specimens was fracture of concrete along the joint with shearing of the key. Good agreement was observed between the experimental test results and the finite-element analysis in terms of the failure mode of unreinforced specimen and the load of crack initiation of the specimens. Fatigue loading had a minor effect on the behavior of the posttensioning bars. The contribution of either the cold-weather or hot-weather epoxies to the joint shear strength was significant knowing that for similar concrete properties, the hot-weather epoxy specimens showed an increase of about 28% in the shear capacity, in comparison to the cold-weather epoxy specimens. The excellent performance of the epoxy-jointed shear keys was verified by field application on a prototype model simulating a portion of the Wacker Drive Bridge system. It was concluded that implementing AASHTO procedures result in conservative estimates of the shear strength of the single keyed joint since it neglects the contribution of the epoxy and underestimates the strength of the key itself.  相似文献

In order to reliably obtain seismic responses of as-built and repaired reinforced concrete bridge columns under near-fault ground motions, pseudodynamic testing of two bridge columns with a reduced scale of 2/5 was performed. Pseudodynamic test results reveal that a ductile member may have no chance to entirely develop its ductile behavior to dissipate seismic energy, because it may suddenly be destroyed by a significant pulse-like wave. The seismic performance of the two damaged bridge columns can be recovered after repair with carbon fiber reinforced plastics composite sheets. It is also experimentally confirmed that the flexural failure moment obtained from the pseudodynamic test is in good agreement with the plastic moment predicted by the ACI 318 code. As pseudodynamic test results are believed to be more accurate than numerical solutions, they can be considered as reference solutions in developing a finite-element model. An identical specimen was tested under cyclic loading to estimate basic properties of these columns, such as shear strength, flexural strength, and ductility, so that the seismic responses obtained from pseudodynamic tests can be thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, its hysteretic response may also be used to match a mathematical model to simulate the very complicated load-displacement relation for analysis.  相似文献

Field Static Load Test on Kao-Ping-Hsi Cable-Stayed Bridge   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Field load testing is an effective method for understanding the behavior and fundamental characteristics of a cable-stayed bridge. This paper presents the results of field static load tests on the Kao-Ping-Hsi cable-stayed bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in Taiwan, before it was open to traffic. A total of 40 loading cases, including the unit and distributed bending and torsion loading effects, were conducted to investigate the bridge behavior. The atmospheric temperature effect on the variations of the main girder deflections was also monitored. The results of static load testing include the main girder deflections, the flexural strains of the prestressed concrete girder, and the variations of the cable forces. A three-dimensional finite-element model was developed. The results show that the bridge under the planned load test conditions has linear superposition characteristics and the analytical model shows a very good agreement with the bridge responses. Further discussion of deflection and cable forces of the design specifications for a cable-stayed bridge is also presented.  相似文献

This first part of a two-part paper on the John A. Roebling suspension bridge (1867) across the Ohio River is an analytical investigation, whereas Part II focuses on the experimental investigation of the bridge. The primary objectives of the investigation are to assess the bridge’s load-carrying capacity and compare this capacity with current standards of safety. Dynamics-based evaluation is used, which requires combining finite-element bridge analysis and field testing. A 3D finite-element model is developed to represent the bridge and to establish its deformed equilibrium configuration due to dead loading. Starting from the deformed configuration, a modal analysis is performed to provide the frequencies and mode shapes. Transverse vibration modes dominate the low-frequency response. It is demonstrated that cable stress stiffening plays an important role in both the static and dynamic responses of the bridge. Inclusion of large deflection behavior is shown to have a limited effect on the member forces and bridge deflections. Parametric studies are performed using the developed finite-element model. The outcome of the investigation is to provide structural information that will assist in the preservation of the historic John A. Roebling suspension bridge, though the developed methodology could be applied to a wide range of cable-supported bridges.  相似文献

Posttensioning is an effective method for the construction of different types of bridge girders such as those used in segmentally erected bridges. Available nonlinear analysis programs for bridge girders under severe loading conditions are computationally expensive though. In addition, they neglect important phenomena such as bond-slip, friction, and anchorage losses. The objective of the proposed work is to develop a new nonlinear finite-element program for analysis of posttensioned bridge girders. The new model overcomes most of the difficulties associated with existing models. The model is based on the computationally efficient mixed formulation and considers bond, friction, and anchorage loss effects. The mixed formulation is characterized by its fast convergence, usually with very few finite elements and its robustness even under severe loading conditions. The posttensioning operation is accurately simulated using a phased-analysis technique, in which each stage of the posttensioning operation is simulated through a complete nonlinear analysis procedure. Correlation studies of the proposed model with experimental results of posttensioned specimens are conducted. These studies confirmed the accuracy and efficiency of the newly developed software program, which represents an advancement over existing commercial software packages for evaluating posttensioned bridge girders, in particular those subjected to severe loading conditions.  相似文献

Since the first edition of the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Horizontally Curved Steel Girder Highway Bridges was published in 1980, there have been two more editions including many revisions to the specifications. Some changes were based on valid research results and others were based on limited or uncertain research results and information. The current edition of the specifications contains provisions that may result in unreasonably conservative load capacity ratings. In this paper, the results of field tests and analyses conducted on the Veterans’ Memorial curved steel-box girder bridge are discussed. Test and analytical results show: (1) current AASHTO guide specifications regarding the first transverse stiffener spacing at the simple end support of a curved girder may be too conservative for bridge load capacity ratings; (2) current AASHTO guide specifications may greatly overestimate the dynamic loadings of curved box girder bridges with long span lengths; and (3) a plane grid finite-element model of about 20 elements per span in the longitudinal direction can be used to analyze curved multigirder bridges with external bracings located only over supports. The research results are instructive and applicable to bridge design and bridge load-rating activities.  相似文献

Foundation scour is a major issue affecting the structural safety of existing bridges, hence its monitoring is of paramount importance. This paper reports a case history of assessment and monitoring with dynamic tests for a bridge affected by scouring and subjected to retrofitting. Two different approaches measuring traffic-induced vibrations are applied as potential tools for monitoring foundation scour. The modal identification of bridge spans is one approach, and the observation of the dynamic response of pier foundations is the other approach. A finite-element model is used to choose the parameters for scour monitoring. Both approaches are applied to the experimental data collected about the structure prior to and after retrofitting to show their effectiveness.  相似文献

The use of horizontally curved composite multiple-box girder bridges in modern highway systems is quite suitable in resisting torsional and warping effects induced by highway curvatures. Bridge users react adversely to vibrations of a bridge and especially where torsional modes dominate. In this paper, continuous curved composite multiple-box girder bridges are analyzed, using the finite-element method, to evaluate their natural frequencies and mode shapes. Experimental tests are conducted on two continuous twin-box girder bridge models of different curvatures to verify and substantiate the finite-element model. Empirical expressions are deduced from these results to evaluate the fundamental frequency for such bridges. The parameters considered herein are the span length, number of lanes, number of boxes, span-to-radius of curvature ratio, span-to-depth ratio, end-diaphragm thickness, number of cross bracings, and number of spans.  相似文献

Modern highway bridges are often subject to tight geometric restrictions and, in many cases, must be built in curved alignment. These bridges may have a cross section in the form of a multiple steel box girder composite with a concrete deck slab. This type of cross section is one of the most suitable for resisting the torsional, distortional, and warping effects induced by the bridge’s curvature. Current design practice in North America does not specifically deal with shear distribution in horizontally curved composite multiple steel box girder bridges. In this paper an extensive parametric study, using an experimentally calibrated finite-element model, is presented, in which simply supported straight and curved prototype bridges are analyzed to determine their shear distribution characteristics under dead load and under AASHTO live loadings. The parameters considered in this study are span length, number of steel boxes, number of traffic lanes, bridge aspect ratio, degree of curvature, and number and stiffness of cross bracings and of top-chord systems. Results from tests on five box girder bridge models verify the finite-element model. Based on the results from the parametric study simple empirical formulas for maximum shears (reactions) are developed that are suitable for the design office. A comparison is made with AASHTO and CHBDC formulas for straight bridges. An illustrative example of the design is presented.  相似文献

This study investigates the performance of new bridge columns wrapped with fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) when exposed to aggressive environmental conditions. This has been accomplished through field monitoring and laboratory tests. As part of the field monitoring, temperature data were collected at various locations of bridge columns. In addition, visual inspection of two bridges was performed periodically for over a period of two years. No evidence of deterioration of the FRP wraps was detected during that period. Laboratory tests were performed to investigate how FRP wraps protect reinforced concrete columns from corrosion, and freeze–thaw laboratory tests were conducted to study the impact of temperature cycles on the mechanical behavior of FRP-wrapped columns. From the corrosion experimental tests, it was found that FRP provides excellent protection against aggressive agents (salty water or moisture) even when a single layer is used. Compression tests were conducted on specimens subjected to freeze–thaw cycles. It was found that minor thermal cycles have no effect on the performance of FRP-wrapped concrete specimens. However, for large thermal cycles, some degradation of ductility in the axial and the hoop directions was observed.  相似文献
