Correlation functions of random process theory are used to intercompare available fracture toughness (K Ic) vs loading rate \((\dot K)\) data of three different mild steels. The analyses confirm that large fluctuations in fracture strength are dependent in an extremely sensitive yet statistically reproducible way upon \(\dot K\) , and apparently insensitive to temperature and neutron irradiation. The emergence of a common pattern of rate sensitivityK Ic \(K_{Ic} (\dot K)\) in these ferritic steels provides a discriminating index of strain rate in the initiation stages of the crack growth process, helpful in aligning fracture models.  相似文献

Human subjects have difficulty in generating sequences that satisfy accepted requirements for randomness. This is often attributed to faulty cognitive operations or concepts of randomness. This article explores the alternative possibility that these deficiencies result from the operation of the same basic mechanisms for selecting responses that are studied in psychophysics. The features of random generation are briefly reviewed, an experiment is reported, and a model for random number generation is presented. The model assumes that an internal analogue source produces a random variable which may be represented on an internal dimension, the aleatory decision axis. The subject uses the measures produced by this random generator to select discrete responses. The mechanisms that select these responses use decision criteria whose positions on a decision axis are determined in accordance with a theory of the setting and maintenance of criteria presented elsewhere (Treisman & Williams, 1984). It is shown that this model can explain some important features of random sequence generation, and that what may be described as "cognitive intrusions" can be distinguished from effects of the response selection system. The Stokes radius characteristics of reduced and carboxamidated ribonuclease A (RCAM RNase) were determined for transfer of this "random coil" protein from water to 1 M concentrations of the naturally occurring protecting osmolytes trimethylamine N-oxide, sarcosine, sucrose, and proline and the nonprotecting osmolyte urea. The denatured ensemble of RCAM RNase expands in urea and contracts in protecting osmolytes to extents proportional to the transfer Gibbs energy of the protein from water to osmolyte. This proportionality suggests that the sum of the transfer Gibbs energies of individual parts of the protein is responsible for the dimensional changes in the denatured ensemble. The dominant term in the transfer Gibbs energy of RCAM RNase from water to protecting osmolytes is the unfavorable interaction of the osmolyte with the peptide backbone, whereas the favorable interaction of urea with the backbone dominates in RCAM RNase transfer to urea. The side chains collectively favor transfer to the osmolytes, with some protecting osmolytes solubilizing hydrophobic side chains as well as urea does, a result suggesting there is nothing special about the ability of urea to solubilize hydrophobic groups. Protecting osmolytes stabilize proteins by raising the chemical potential of the denatured ensemble, and the uniform thermodynamic force acting on the peptide backbone causes the collateral effect of contracting the denatured ensemble. The contraction decreases the conformational entropy of the denatured state while increasing the density of hydrophobic groups, two effects that also contribute to the ability of protecting osmolytes to force proteins to fold.  相似文献

Both intramuscular and oral oruvel is acknowledged as an effective means for therapy of inflammatory and dystrophic rheumatic diseases. Aging is a complex process. It consists of a diverse assortment of seemingly random manifestations that occur in the individual, the mutual relationship and impact on mortality of which is frequently obscure. We derive a simple equation to model the aging process based on scale invariant and increasing change. The solution to this equation indicates that this change itself, irrespective of its quality, is the cause and not simply the effect of aging. This model establishes loss of homeostasis as a fundamental feature of aging. The model is deterministic, but it supports the stochastic nature of age changes. Paradoxically, this model states that a sufficient augmentation of aging processes results in a lack of aging. Experimental evidence in support of this model is presented that spans the levels of population mortality rates, cellular spatial organization, and gene dysregulation.  相似文献
