The Association for the Advancement of Psychology (AAP) is the advocacy arm of American psychology, representing the interests of psychology in the public policy arena. A nonprofit corporation, AAP was founded under the auspices of the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association in 1974 and is supported by both APA contributions and individual membership dues. The AAP's Board, various committees, and public policy activities for 1981 are discussed in this article. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Since World War II, American psychology's role in health care has significantly expanded. This was formally recognized in 2001 when the membership of the American Psychological Association (APA) approved a bylaw change in its mission statement to include the word health. An accumulating body of research demonstrates and recent reviews conclude that psychological factors are primary in health and in illnesses. This article proposes a vision of psychology that endorses a bio-psycho-socio-cultural model of health research and interventions. The author provides 4 definitions of health, reviews selected psychology health research and interventions, summarizes APA's recent health-related activities, and presents 5 policy recommendations for consideration and debate. This article outlines the activities of the Association for the Advancement of Psychology (AAP) in its first year of activity. In its first full calendar year of operation, AAP and the Washington operations of the Council for the Advancement of the Psychological Professions and Sciences moved decisively ahead in promoting the public policy objectives of American psychology on Capitol Hill and in the executive agencies--working toward still greater organizational strength and accomplishments in 1976 and the years beyond. "This year I propose to devote most of my report to the larger context—the nature of APA, what it does, and how it does it." Issues concerning the compatibility of psychology's professional and scientific aims and functions, problems relating to the recent emergence of public policy issues in which psychology has an important stake, and the regular activities of APA are discussed. "The outside world keeps asking more of psychology—often through the machinery of APA. The membership of APA naturally keeps asking more of APA. Both systems may be expected to make more requests and demands." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In accord with the APA Bylaws (Article X, Section 7), the Policy and Planning (P&P) Board submitted its Five-Year Report for 1980 to the APA membership last year ("Five-Year Report," 1980). The Five-Year Report is mandated as an overview of the state of organized psychology. The P&P Board is also charged with preparing an annual report to the membership of its own activities. Since the Board did not submit an annual report for 1980 in lieu of the Five-Year Report, this document highlights activities for 1980 and 1981. Topics of discussion include: APA's Organization; Divisions and State Associations; Service on Council and Boards and Committees; and Other Activities. This article describes the career and contributions to psychology of Florence Halpern, born January 5, 1900. She was the "grandmother of psychology" in New York and raised many generations of professional psychologists who today are among the senior members and leaders of the profession. She was not only an outstanding clinician, a stimulating and respected teacher, and a concerned and aware professional; she was at the same time a wife, a mother of two children (now both successful professionals), an involved grandmother, a woman of broad cultural interests, and an inspired hostess who loved to do her own cooking and entertaining. Highlights are provided of her academic career, her contributions to the professionalization of psychology, her activities at the national level in psychology, and her scholarship. It may be concluded that women in psychology in the Southeast, except, in certain respects, women doctoral students, hold a "minority" status. In light of the evidence pointing to this conclusion, some affirmative action activities that are being conducted by the Southeastern Psychological Association and the Status of Women group are described here. The recent activities of the House Committee to Investigate Tax Exempt Foundations seem to have significance for the country as a whole and perhaps special significance for psychology and related fields. Because not many psychologists have been able to follow in the press the story of this Committee's hearings, this APA Public Information Consultant was asked to prepare for this space a running account of the Committee's activities and of reactions thereto. It gives psychologists a skeletonized story of a recent and interesting series of events in Washington. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The Psychology Defense Fund, established in 1980 by the Council of Representatives, is supported by voluntary contributions of individuals and organizations. Its purpose is to advance the Association objectives by supporting legislative and legal activities that focus on the definition, regulation, and recognition of psychology as a science and a profession, in the interest of promoting the public welfare, by providing attention to a broad range of issues in the public-social, scientific, and professional sectors. More than 2,700 contributors have donated over $106,000 to the fund since its inception. The roster of contributors through March 1, 1981, is presented. Highlights the accomplishments and activities of the American Psychological Association (APA) during 1995. These are summarized for the Science, Practice, Education, and Public Interest Directorates; for Central Programs; and for the Office of Publications and Communications. The financial gains of recent years continue. APA membership continues to grow at over 5%, whereas staff growth has been much slower. Although the 1994 congressional elections had brought to Washington a much more conservative political leadership, the draconian changes that would have been destructive to psychology have become less probable and the APA Central Office has continued to make steady progress in its primary missions. This is an obituary for psychologist, Henry P. David. For the last 35 years of his professional life, without the organizational support of a university or large research institute, Henry coordinated conferences and research activities around the world with colleagues from different professional backgrounds. Henry’s achievements in the fields of international psychology, women’s rights, and reproductive issues have been recognized with numerous awards, including three APA division awards. He lived from 1923 to 2009. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

During the year the range of APA knowledge dissemination activities has been extended; work of experimental psychologists will be viewed by millions as a recently completed educational TV series titled "Focus on Behavior"; an attractive APA booklet on opportunities and requirements for careers in psychology has been prepared. "The pervasiveness of psychology in our culture is readily documented." Criticism and unfavorable public reaction regarding psychology center on issues of invasion of privacy, denial of freedom, deception, and behavior control. A core problem is the professionalization of psychology. There is a need to investigate the reciprocal relationships between psychology and the law. Psychologists cannot be disinterested in the results of application of psychological knowledge to human affairs. Psychology is accountable to society which has supported it. Do PhD-level clinical psychologists who work in academic settings engage in both research and clinical practice, as the Boulder model recommends? Clinical psychology faculty members in 3 types of psychology departments were surveyed regarding their actual and preferred work activities and their attitudes toward clinical practice. Respondents indicated that they spent more than twice as much time in research as in clinical activity, with many (44%) reporting no involvement in clinical practice. Implications of declining practice among clinical faculty include potentially ineffective instruction in clinical course work, less informed clinical research, and the devaluing of clinical practice in traditional academic settings. Recommendations for facilitating practice among clinical faculty who wish to do so are proposed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Relatively little attention has been paid to potential applications of comparative psychology during the recent review and reevaluation of the discipline. Yet, problems arising from the human–animal relationship most often demand solutions that call upon both a knowledge of naturalistic behavior patterns and familiarity with the principles of learning and behavioral analysis, a combination uniquely characteristic of comparative psychology. Applications of comparative psychology are well established in zoos, in attempts to preserve endangered species, small animal veterinary practice, in agriculture, and in animal welfare. Applied comparative psychology is likely to establish itself as a valuable adjunct to more traditional activities in all of these areas.
