During the year the range of APA knowledge dissemination activities has been extended; work of experimental psychologists will be viewed by millions as a recently completed educational TV series titled "Focus on Behavior"; an attractive APA booklet on opportunities and requirements for careers in psychology has been prepared. "The pervasiveness of psychology in our culture is readily documented." Criticism and unfavorable public reaction regarding psychology center on issues of invasion of privacy, denial of freedom, deception, and behavior control. A core problem is the professionalization of psychology. There is a need to investigate the reciprocal relationships between psychology and the law. Psychologists cannot be disinterested in the results of application of psychological knowledge to human affairs. Psychology is accountable to society which has supported it. The Policy and Planning Board provides this report to the members of the American Psychological Association (APA) on its activities in 1957. The board met twice, in Chicago: November 8, 1957 and April 2-3, 1958. This year the board put aside any major questions about the organization of the APA--a matter that has occupied much of our time in the past two years. The board turned its attention, rather, to the kind of a role the APA ought to play in the public and professional life of our time. In addition, we acted on a number of limited issues which are summarized in this report. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Reports on actions of the Council, including a petition of the Black Students Psychological Association that lists five goals. The item with the most potentially far-reaching implications for the future of APA is one that involves only rather minor immediate decisions. This is the question of the role of nondoctoral psychologists in APA and the proper function of APA in serving individuals who apply psychology. At the moment the recommendations ask only for study of the manpower needed for providing effective psychological services and of the way in which APA might serve the needs of the individual psychologists with less than doctoral training. This report discusses implications for an increase in dues income, membership standards, the size of APA, its journal program, and the effect of this issue on professional education, training, and standards. Public affairs issues continue to be a major concern of the Board of Directors and of Council. At the October meeting, Council will consider several resolutions related to nondiscriminatory practices; the legitimacy of the work of the membership of the Division of Military Psychology; a possible endorsement of a moratorium of university teaching, study, and research in protest of American involvement in Vietnam; and a possible withdrawal of the accreditation of any doctoral training program that discriminates against women.
