The role of the family in the nurture and protection of the young.

U.S. Secretary of Education William J. Bennett discusses the federal government's failure over the past two decades to alter substantially many of the problems facing the nation's youth. He suggests that the family is better able to make decisions regarding the well-being of its young members than is the federal government and that federal policy, therefore, should be concerned primarily in strengthening rather than supplanting the family's influence and authority. International Union of Scientific Psychology.

Presents a summary of activities at the Assembly of the International Union of Scientific Psychology at Montreal held June 6th. Donald Marquis and H. S. Langfeld attended the meeting as representatives of the American Psychological Association. The Assembly voted to accept Jugoslavia as a member of the Union. There are now 20 adhering countries, the last to be admitted besides Jugoslavia being Israel and Egypt. The Secretary General reported that the Union had been accepted on a consultative basis by the Division of the Social Sciences of Unesco. Subjects for research in social psychology were ranked and are listed here. The Assembly agreed that a directory of foreign psychology was desirable. The changes in the statutes proposed by the Executive Committee last July were adopted. The Assembly elected Jean Piaget president of the Union and E. T. Rasmussen vice president. The Executive Committee was elected. The Executive Committee elected Klineberg as Secretary General and Mailloux as Treasurer. APA's first publication: Proceedings of the American Psychological Association, 1892–2893.

Presents a reprint of Secretary J. M. Cattell's (1894) Proceedings of the American Psychological Association. The 1st publication of the American Psychological Association (APA) contained the proceedings of the 1st and 2nd annual meetings held in 1892 and 1893, including an address by the president of the APA in 1893. Abstracts of papers presented at the meetings focus on topics that include observation errors, pain, the relation of stimulus intensity to the reaction time (RT), visual memory, and the problem of psychological measurement. Karl Florien Heiser (1904–1991): Obituary.

Memorializes Karl Florien Heiser (1904–1991). Heiser was a former Executive Secretary of the American Psychological Association (APA), founder and president of the Connecticut State Society of Psychologists, and one of the authors of the 1st psychology certification law in the US, for which he received a plaque by the Division of State Psychological Association Affairs of APA. The study focuses on the use of brainstorming tool for consensual decision making in nursing services. A qualitative research has been developed with focus group technique use involving 6 workers from a basic health unit in Joao Pessoa city which belongs to the state network of Paraíba State Health Secretary. The results showed the method application plausibility as a strategy to nursing services quality improvement.

"Chance" scores on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank for men.

Strong's estimated chance score ranges on the SVIB scales are compared with the chance variance for most of the scales, computed from the assumption of zero item intercorrelations (obtained when the blank is filled out in all possible ways). "Most of the differences are small, and the positive and negative errors of estimate are about equally divided. The greatest difference is in the Aviator scale, where Strong's estimate is about 1.4 standard score points too high. This difference is significant at the 1% level as judged by the F test. Metrication and AIHA

AIHA supports a planned orderly national program for conversion to the metric system and will cooperate with other technical societies and organizations in implementing this voluntary conversion. The Association will use the International System of Units (SI) as modified by the Secretary of Commerce for use in the United States in all official publications, papers and documents. U.S. customary units can be presented in parentheses following the appropriate SI unit, when it is necessary for clarity.
