The APA visiting scientist and international scientist programs: 1964-65.

The 1964-65 academic year was the fifth year of the Visiting Scientist Program supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The general purposes and procedures have been described in a series of four earlier reports (Ross, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1965), but the objectives of the program are reviewed here. The second program to be reported is a small program which we call the International Scientist Program, which also is in its fifth year--and NSF is closing out this program by April 1, 1966. The previous reports have described the operation and listed the visitors. Included in this article is a list of the colleges visited in the 1964-65 APA Visiting Scientist Program. The APA visiting scientist and international scientist programs: 1962-63.

With support of the NSF, visits were arranged and completed to 80 institutions. The APA international scientist and visiting scientist programs: 1961-62.

The International Scientist Program involves a small number of first rank scientists and their visits to a limited number of American universities. The Program of Visiting Scientists continued for the 2nd year (in 1961-62); visits were arranged to each of the 96 institutions applying. The APA Visiting Scientist Program: 1966-67.

This discusses the seventh year of the APA'S Visiting Scientist Program supported by the National Science Foundation. The general purpose and procedures have been described in a series of six earlier reports (Ross, 1961, 1962, 1964, 196Sa, 1965b, 1966). The program has the following objectives: (a) to stimulate interest in the scientific aspects of psychology at the collegiate level; (6) to present some of the frontiers of psychological research and application to small institutions where psychology is not now fully developed; (c1) to provide an opportunity to administrative officers, staff members, and students at colleges to consult with leaders in psychological science; and (d) to stimulate students to consider careers in psychology, including the teaching of psychology. The APA Visiting Scientist Program: 1967-68.

Notes that the 1967-68 academic year was the eighth year of APA's Visiting Scientist Program. The program is supported by the National Science Foundation. Although the goals of the program and the procedures for carrying it out are much the same as in previous years, some changes were made in the program this year, which are outlined. The institutions and visitors are listed in Table 1. Psychologists who served as visitors are thanked for their services; their effectiveness and the effectiveness of the program through the years is attested to by the vast number of positive comments received from visited institutions. APA Visiting Scientist Program: 1971-1972.

The American Psychological Association's Visiting Scientist Program has now completed its twelfth and final year of operation as a National Science Foundation-sponsored activity. The APA is planning to continue the program under the auspices of the Educational Affairs Office while seeking alternate funding. As in the past, the Visiting Scientist Program provided colleges and small universities with visits from eminent psychologists who offered their services as either scientific lecturers or educational consultants. Over 1,000 such visits have been made to educational institutions across the United States, 84 of which were made during 1971-1972. Throughout its existence the program has maintained the following objectives: (a) to stimulate interest in the scientific aspects of psychology at the collegiate level; (6) to present some of the new developments in psychological research and application; (c) to provide psychology departments with expert consultation regarding curricula, laboratories, staffing, programs, and procedures; (d) to acquaint students with the opportunities for advanced study and scientific and professional careers in psychology, including the teaching of psychology. For the last several years a special effort has been made to include psychologists and institutions which would serve as representatives of minority groups. This year's participants included 12 black psychologists, 9 women psychologists, and 1 Indian psychologist; 14 black institutions, and 2 women's colleges. The reports of the visits were very favorable, and the Educational Affairs Office would like to express its appreciation to all of those who contributed to the success of this year's program. APA Visiting Scientist Program: 1974-1975.

Notes that the American Psychological Association's Visiting Scientist Program has now completed its fifteenth and last year of operation. Support for the program was provided from contributions from the institutions visited. Because the program is not self-supporting and is no longer receiving funds from the American Psychological Foundation or the American Psychological Association, the program terminates this year. The reports of the visits were very favorable, and the Educational Affairs Office would like to express its appreciation to all of those who contributed to the success of this year's program. APA visiting psychologist program: 1981-1982.

The Visiting Psychologist to Field Settings Program, under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Mental Health, has completed its 15th year of operation. The program continues to function as a mechanism for the dissemination of up-to-date knowledge generated in recent research findings and to provide for the demonstration of innovations in psychological procedures to mental health professionals in service settings by psychologists who are significantly involved in research, training, and the delivery of services. The number of agencies visited by the program since its inception totals over 500. During the past year, 22 agencies were visited. Since several of the agencies reviewed by the Advisory Committee requested similar areas of consultation and were in close geographical proximity to one another, the committee felt it desirable to arrange some combined agency visits in order to include as many agencies as possible in the program. The APA Visiting Psychologist Program: 1967-68.

Briefly discusses the beginning in 1967-1968 of the American Psychological Association's Visiting Psychologist Program, which is supported by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. The goals of this program are to provide information on recent developments in the field to psychologists in service settings, to provide opportunities for psychologists with significant training and research responsibilities to visit and learn about service settings, to facilitate the dissemination of up-to-date knowledge of recent research findings, and to provide for the demonstration of innovations in psychological procedures and techniques. The reports from both the agencies and visitors indicate that the program has been well successful. The agencies and visitors are listed in Table 1. APA Visiting Psychologist Program: 1970-1971.

The Visiting Psychologist Program, under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), has completed its fourth year of operation. The program has been receiving over 100 inquiries and applications from agencies wishing to have a visitor, and interest in serving as a visitor continues to be very strong as indicated by the large number of applications and inquiries received from a broad spectrum of psychologists. This year, 42 agencies were visited, of which 29 were newly selected agencies, while 13 were return visits to agencies previously visited. The Visiting Psychologist Program, under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Mental Health, has completed its 11th year of operation. The program continues to function as a mechanism for the dissemination of up-to-date knowledge generated in recent research findings and to provide for the demonstration of innovations in psychological procedures to mental health professionals in service settings by psychologists who are significantly involved in research, training, and the delivery of services. The total number of agencies visited by the program since its inception numbers about 465. During the past year, 16 agencies were visited, of which 9 were newly selected agencies, while 7 were return visits to agencies visited the previous year. The APA program of visiting scientists: 1960-61.

"The 1960-61 academic year was the first year of a Visiting Scientist Program supported by the National Science Foundation. Nearly 130 psychologist packed their bags, and set out to visit colleges and talk about psychology… . The visiting scientist made himself available to the institution in a variety of ways, depending on the needs of the institution… . Reports from the colleges, written after the departure of the visiting scientist, were quite uniformly favorable and many were enthusiastic." During the past year, 28 agencies were visited, of which 17 were newly selected agencies, while 11 were return visits to agencies visited the previous year.
