This paper presents a new variant of the Boston Consulting Group matrix analysis and applies it on sensor technologies. This classifies technologies in four classes on the basis of application growth rate of technology on one axis and competence available on the other. The quadrant, with high competence and increasing application growth rate, will be the most favored one and called star. The star technologies need application-oriented research with low risk, but they need money for design and development. A new sensor suite can select these technologies if the product development time available is roughly two to three years. The quadrant with low competence but high application growth rate is the question mark. The question mark technologies need intense R&D efforts, and they involve money and high to moderate risk. These technologies can be selected if product development time available is roughly more than three years. The technologies with low or falling application growth rate, but high competence available, are cash cows. These technologies are readily available (sometimes with production agencies), need absolutely no research, and a little bit of design or application orientation. In the cases where products are immediately needed, they have to be cheaper and do not need to last long technology wise; these can be selected. Finally, the quadrant with low competence and low application growth rate is called dogs, and such technologies can be left during consideration. Time and cost frames have also been well discussed. The role of development trends in prediction of technological evolution through a new BCG matrix is a new aspect introduced in this paper. As an example, this paper applies the above analysis in the area of night vision. This analysis can broadly guide the design of future sensor suites.  相似文献

A novel DC/AC current sensor works on the fluxgate principle. The core in the form of a 7/10-mm ring made of electrodeposited permalloy is sandwiched in the middle of a printed circuit board (PCB), whereas the sensor excitation winding is also integrated in the copper layers of the PCB. To lower the sensor power consumption, the excitation winding was tuned by a parallel capacitor. The peak-peak/rms ratio of 5.2 was achieved for the excitation frequency of 25 kHz. The open-loop sensor has 100-mV/A sensitivity; the characteristics have a linearity error of 10% and hysteresis below 0.1% in the 1-A range.  相似文献

The synergetic interaction of new developments in these fields provides promising technical solutions increasing the quality, reliability, and economic efficiency of technical products. With selected examples, we will give an overview about the significant developments of methods, structures, manufacturing technologies, and signal processing characterizing today's sensors and sensor systems. In this article, Editorial Board member Dr Peter Ball discusses how microporous membranes can be used in a variety of applications in the construction of sensors. This includes their uses as a surface to which molecules involved in the detection function of the sensor are coupled, as a reading surface in the sensor for measurement of a signal and as a barrier to passage of undesired components of the fluid being analysed. The physical and chemical properties of microporous membranes make them well-suited to this role. Iron and steelmaking technology, including the preparation of raw materials and utilisation of wastes, has undergone marked changes over the last five decades. The hand mining of ores/minerals has almost completely been replaced by mechanised mining. The role of mineral beneficiation and sizing has therefore increased. The current emphasis is on maximising the use of mined materials through multiple beneficiation stages and agglomeration of fines. Whilst emerging technologies for producing liquid iron are making their advent, blast furnaces continue to be the unchallenged source of hot metal production. However, the efficiency of ironmaking, both in terms of productivity and quality of hot metal has improved markedly. Gone are the days of open hearth furnaces and Bessemer converters. LD steelmaking has incorporated in it a number of improvements, namely combined blowing, dynamic control along with the use of the sublance, improved refractories for lining and ladle treatment of liquid steel. Trends emerging in the area of steel-casting include, horizontal casting, thin strip casting and hot charging of con-cast products without soaking/re-heating. The paper deals with some of these areas including the advances in rolling mill operation.  相似文献

For well over a century the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite and the Hall-Heroult process involving the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in cryolite to produce aluminium have been commercially exploited. However, significant advances based on intense research and development activities in the last five decades have led to considerable improvements in operating parameters and productivity, efficient disposal and utilization of wastes. This review presents the developments that have taken place in technology, equipment and treatment of wastes in both the alumina and aluminium production processes. Technology and equipment developments in the field of alumina are concerned with usage of different qualities of bauxite, improvement in extraction efficiency of alumina from bauxite, obtaining better yield during precipitation, enhancing scale of operation and minimizing soda losses in the process. Improvements in electrolysis involve utilization of modified electrolytic baths, controlled feeding of alumina, better design of cell based on mathematical modelling of magnetic field and heat distribution and optimization of the performance of electrodes on the basis of good understanding of physical, mechanical and electrical properties. Information on the present situation in the Indian plants is also presented. Proper treatment and disposal of wastes generated in alumina and aluminium production are of great importance as they contain significant amounts of sodium hydroxide, fluorides, sulphur dioxide, oxides of carbon and cyanide. Some attempts made to utilize the waste material are briefly summarized.  相似文献

New hybrid technology for planar fluxgate sensor fabrication   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We have adapted a new printed circuit board (PCB) technology to the fabrication of ultraflat and sensitive fluxgate magnetic field sensors. The two outer layers of the PCB stack compose the electrical windings of fluxgates, while the inner layer is made of a micro-patterned amorphous magnetic ribbon with extremely high relative magnetic permeability (μr≈100 000). Two basic configurations were considered: one based on a toroidal magnetic core and the other on a rectangular core with and without an air gap. The field response and sensitivity of the fluxgate devices have been studied as a function of the gap length, the excitation current, and excitation frequency. Compared to fluxgate sensors of similar size, a relatively high sensitivity of 60 V/T was found at 30 kHz for a five-winding detection coil wound around a rectangular E-shaped magnetic core. This high performance is primarily attributable to the high-permeability magnetic core. The results clearly show the potential of this fluxgate device for application as a magnetic sensor  相似文献

This paper describes a novel distance-sensor concept based on photodiodes in metal-semiconductor-metal technology (MSM). MSM photodiodes can be operated as electrooptical mixers functioning similar to the so-called photonic mixing device (PMD). This paper employs the correlation techniques previously used with the PMD to the MSM. First, experimental results obtained with the MSM inserted into the authors' standard laboratory setup are provided. Additionally, different configurations well suited for mixer operation of the MSM are pointed out. Throughout this paper, similarities between the PMD and MSM are pointed out, as well as key differences.  相似文献

Abstract

Disc brake manufacturing for railway vehicles has become a popular fieldfor assessing the possibilities of MMC application during recent years. The substitution of conventional ferrous materials by light alloys allows for a significant reduction in the rotating masses in a vehicle bogie which leads to a decrease in energy consumption. The use of conventional aluminium casting alloys is not suitable to solve this. Castable MMC materials are a highly promising alternative. Under economic pressure MMC solutions are required to be not only mechanically superior but also cost effective, and due to the low ductility of these particle reinforced materials there is a needfor new concepts. Locally optimised discs consist of a ductile carrier (body) with wear resistant rubbing surfaces. This led to several prototype disc brakes being manufactured by various casting processes. This paper gives an overview of the state of the art and newly developed manufacturing routes and materials, metallic and non-metallic, for rail disc brake applications.  相似文献

The paper begins with a brief review of previous work in the field of technology forecasting and discusses the Fisher-Pry model in particular, before concluding with an attempt at producing a forecast of the rate of development of smart technology. The Fisher-Pry model is shown to fit well with an assumed ultimate microprocessor clock speed of 1-2 GHz. By combining data from multiple sources, support is found for the hypothesis that rates of development can be correlated with development activity, as measured by the number of US patents filed in specific technology areas. A forecast for the development of `smart' technology is made to demonstrate how the models may be used to generate forecasts of future developments where limited data is available  相似文献
