Sample remarks of American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology (ABEPP) examiners regarding ABEPP applicants are presented under the following headings: Field Situation and Examination on Diagnosis, Therapy Examination, Research Examination, and Ethics and Professional Relations. "ABEPP status is, at best, only slowly coming to have direct and immediate effects on salaries and professional rank." As of May 31, 1960, of 812 applicants, 348 were awarded the diploma, 359 are in process, and 105 have been terminated. Historical development of the ABEPP and its operation are described. Presents the citation, biography, and selected bibliography for Robert D. Weitz, this year's (1994) winner of the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions--Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. From Weitz's citation: "Dr. Robert D. Weitz has filled a lifetime of energy, enthusiasm, and achievement into his 50-plus year career in professional psychology. As a clinician, educator, editor, and activist, he has been an inspiration and role model for generations of clinical and applied psychologists who have benefited from the efforts of the early pioneers of the profession. More than a dreamer, Bob has manifested the ability to turn ideas into reality, with the development of his own successful clinical practice, the evolution of two professional schools of psychology, a scholarly journal for practitioners, and the significant advances for the profession in the political arena. Of his greatest accomplishment, he has obtained these goals while earning and maintaining the love and respect of his colleagues and preserving an unmatched zest for life and people." Notes that American Psychologist readers who had come to count on the informative and readable columns appearing monthly under the heading "Psychology in the States" may have had reason to wonder recently if psychology had seceded from the states or vice versa. Actually, neither is the case. After some months of hibernation, occasioned by a hiatus in filling the temporarily vacant position of Administrative Officer for State and Professional Affairs, the feature now reappears under new authorship and with the new designation, "State and Professional Affairs". It will try to hit high spots of interest and importance in state and professional affairs in the hope that it will provide an informal and relatively timely blend of information and commentary. Comments on the article by J. S. Swoboda et al (see record 1980-24066-001) and asserts that this article should not have been published in the journal of Professional Psychology. Perry considers the printing of this article to be irresponsible in the damaging effects that it might have on the public's view of psychology as a profession. Perry objects to the suggestion that a significant number of psychologists would ignore or break the law without that suggestion being based upon much better evidence than is contained in this article. While Swoboda et al. are careful to refer to their results as "exploratory" and "suggestions," they nevertheless use these findings as evidence in their discussion of the "negative attitude toward the law" and "ignorance of the law." In addition, Perry asserted that the high refusal rate and the fact that the sample was restricted to eastern Nebraska may indicate a restricted and biased sample. The Committee on Accreditation has accredited the doctoral training programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology that are conducted by the institutions below. In accordance with Section 4.c of the APA "Accreditation Procedures," each program as required has provided evidence in an annual report of its continued compliance with the criteria at the level of its accredited status. Each program's accreditation status has been reaffirmed by the Committee at its fall meeting. The original date of accreditation, listed for each program, is the day on which the program's accredited status became effective. According to Section 9.c of the "Accreditation Procedures," accreditation is effective as of the last day of the initial site visit, the report of which was among the documents used in reaching the accreditation decision. Readers who desire information on training goals and approaches of specific programs are encouraged to write directly to the departments in which the programs are offered. ABEPP Status.
This letter is in reference to the article "The Meaning of the ABEPP Diploma" (see record 1962-02007-001) and the comment, "ABEPP Standard Too High?" (American Psychologist, 1961, 16, 655). In response to the Board of Trustees of ABEPP who state that "the ABEPP process has not caught hold," the author of this comment proposes the possibility that psychologists do not desire the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology (ABEPP) because it appears that only a small percentage of the Amercan Psychological Association (APA) membership voted on the issue of ABEPP and there has never been any clear endorsement from the majority of the APA membership. The author also discusses the implications of ABEPP and APA's tax exempt status. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Russell Julian Bent had a long career as an innovative administrative psychologist. He also worked as a chief clinical psychologist and later assumed an administrative role in academic health science centers. Following his career, Bent moved to Dayton, Ohio, where Wright State University was establishing its new School of Professional Psychology. Over the years, Bent served on its Midwest Board, later becoming president of the Midwest Board and also the Midwest Representative to the ABPP Board of Trustees (1992–1995). He served as president of the Board of Trustees from 1996 to 1997, during which time he participated in conceptualizing and carrying out ABPP’s reorganization from a regional to a specialty board structure. He served as the ABPP executive officer from 2000 to 2006. In these positions, he was instrumental in establishing systematic ABPP policies and procedures. When ABPP presented him with its Award for Distinguished Service and Contributions to the American Board of Professional Psychology in 2006, the award was renamed in his honor. Sadly Bent died after an extended illness on August 22, 2008, at his retirement home in Roswell, Georgia. He was 79 years of age.
